Frederick Becksted

Frederick William Becksted, 49, of Otis died at North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City on Jan. 11, 1999.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 6, 1949 to Burt and Pauline Jones Becksted. He was raised in Newport, and was a 1967 graduate of Newport High School.
He was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the Army. After being discharged from the Army, he was employed at the Georgia-Pacific pulp mill until it was disbanded. For the past four years, he had been employed at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City.
Survivors include his son, Tristan W. Becksted of Waldport; a daughter, Chandra L. Becksted of Sunriver; brothers Tom of Saudi Arabia, Bob of Toledo and Mike of Arkansas; sisters Betty Greenawald of Newport, Janet Barger of Sheridan, and Pat Hendricks of Newport; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering/open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today (Friday) at 1344 NW Nye St., Newport. Disposition is under the direction of Bateman Funeral Home.

Frances Engelbrecht

Frances Enid Engelbrecht, 86, of Waldport died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center on Jan. 8, 1999.
She was born in Portland on Sept. 9, 1912 to Fred and Florence Theil. She had been a resident of Waldport since 1969. She married Adolphe Engelbrecht in Ashland on April 23, 1951.
For 54 years, she was employed as a cook, part of that time in McKenzie at the Thompson Lodge and Holiday Inn. She was the owner/operator of a restaurant in Blue River, "The Cougar Room." For many years, she also worked with the home Extension.
Survivors include her husband, Adolphe; a son, Larry Engelbrecht of Waldport; a daughter, Carol Drusseau of Eugene; a brother, Charles Theil of Springfield; a sister, Maxine Egan of Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
At the decedent's request, no services are planned. Disposition is under the direction of Bateman Funeral Home.

Ray Duncan

Ray Duncan, 77, of Otis died Jan. 5, 1999 in Salem.
He was born in Visalia, Calif. on Feb. 16, 1921 to Grant and Lottie Duncan. He served as an Army sergeant, European campaign, under General Patton. Following the war, Mr. Duncan was a dairy product route salesman in Utah and Nevada. He married his wife, Betty, in Reno, Nev. in 1969. They purchased a mobile park in Waldport in 1971.
In 1976, they moved to Lincoln City, where he was one of the original drivers of "Dolly the Trolley." He also worked at the Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City as official greeter and guest driver.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Reno, twice past commander and present chaplain of Ron Slane Veterans of Foreign wars Post #5653 and the Captain John's coffee clutch. He volunteered at North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City, and enjoyed golf and his boat, "Miss Guided."
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Otis; and a son, Raymond Duncan Jr.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Taft Masonic Lodge, under the auspices of VFW Post #5653. Memorial contributions are suggested to VFW Post #5653, PO Box 92, Otis, 97368. Pacific View Memorial Chapel is serving the family.

John Peets

John William Peets, 84, of Waldport died at his home on Jan. 11, 1999.
He was born in St. Helens on Dec. 11, 1914 to Walter W. and Margaret Vincent Peets. He had been a resident of Waldport for the past 44 years.
His wife, Marjorie, whom he married in 1934, preceded him in death in 1990.
For more than 45 years, he was a self-employed logger. He retired in 1979.
Survivors include his daughter, Judy Beck of Waldport; a son, John R. Peets of White City; sisters Thelma Dawgillo of Portland, Edwina Getchell of Waldport, and Zada Westland and Vivian Case, both of Portland; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family suggests donations to the Alsi Historical Museum in Waldport. At the decedent's request, no services are planned. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Krogstad

Ralph Glen Krogstad, 66, of Toledo died at his home on Jan. 9, 1999.
He was born in Perth, N.D. on Sept. 8, 1932 to Martin and Alma Rudland Krogstad. He had been a resident of Toledo since 1949. For 30 years, he was employed as a lumber grader with Lincoln Lumber and Publishers. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Toledo, Sunnyridge Grange and the American Legion.
Survivors include his sisters and brother-in-law, Agnes and Leslie Taylor of Toledo and Irene Mommsen of Atkinson, Neb.; and nieces and nephews, Rosalie McLaughlin, Judy Stauffer, Diane Mommsen, Shirley Theil, John Howry, Joseph Howry, Sath Stauffer, Dayd Stauffer, Erin Theil and Erica Theil.
Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Interment will be in Eureka Cemetery in Newport. The family suggests donations be made to Hospice. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Alice "Jeanie" Bowes

Alice Jeane "Jeanie" Bowes, 72, of Newport died Jan. 14, 1999 of cancer.
She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on Oct. 15, 1926 to Rudger and Ann Amundsen. She was a teacher, counselor and school psychologist in California, Nevada and Oregon.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Howard of Newport; a son, Scott, of Florida; daughters Ann Bowes of Moscow, Idaho and Peggy Fowler of Beaverton; brothers Max Amundsen and Walter Amundsen; sisters Phyllis Hamilton and Barbara Offield, all of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mary Kerns of Ontario, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the LDS Church, 2229 NE Crestview Drive, Newport.

Emma Crawford

Emma B. Crawford, 101, of Newport died Dec. 4, 1998.
She was born in Milwaukee, Wis. in October 1897. She moved to San Antonio, Texas as a young child. At 18, she moved with her parents to Claremont, Calif.
She married Ivan T. Patterson in 1919, after he left the service. They lived in Pomona, Calif. He died in 1937.
In 1943, she married James L. Crawford and moved to Ventura, Calif., where her husband had a barber shop. They moved to the Alsea Lodge in Tidewater in July 1947, and her husband had a tackle shop in Waldport. After they sold the tackle shop in 1953, they moved to San Jose, Calif., and he bought another barber shop.
In 1982, after Mr. Crawford's death, she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Beatrice and Bob Turley in Tidewater. In 1982, when her other daughter, Phyllis, moved to Waldport, she went to live with her.
After breaking her hip in 1994, she went to live at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center.
Survivors include her daughters, Beatrice Turley of Tidewater and Phyllis Qualls of Waldport; grandchildren Stephen Turley of South Beach, Susan Turley Alvidrez of Newberg, Sharon Turley Clow of Tidewater, and Stanton Turley of Cederedge, Colo.; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren.

Ralph Parkhurst

Ralph Earnest Parkhurst, 75, of Yachats died Jan. 13, 1999 at his home.
He was born in Medford on March 1, 1923 to Herman Orval and Sylvia Marie (Jones) Parkhurst. His father was in real estate sales, and the family lived in numerous places in southern Oregon.
Following his education, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served as a gunner in B-24's in Europe during World War II. His plane crashed in Yugoslavia. He flew 17 missions during his Air Force enlistment. Following his honorable discharge, he lived in Portland, where he attended Lewis and Clark College. He also attended Western Oregon University in Monmouth and the University of Oregon, Eugene.
He married Linda Girod in Salem on Nov. 23, 1949. They moved to Albany, where he was employed by Prudential Insurance Company. The family then he moved to Lebanon, and taught school in the Lebanon area before moving to Yachats on May 19, 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Linda, of Yachats; a son, Steven L. Parkhurst of Shedd; daughters Debbie Prouty and Trish Cole, both of Albany; grandchildren Sara, Chrissy and Kyle Prouty and Jackie and Becka Cole, all of Albany; and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Friday) at Eastside Christian Church, 1910 SE Grand Prairie Road, Albany, with Pastor Dave Nolte officiating. Private internment will be held at Willamette Memorial Park in Albany following the service. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice, Yachats Public Library or Eastside Christian Church, care of AAsum Funeral Home, 805 South Ellsworth, Albany 97321. AAsum Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for Mr. Parkhurst.
