Major Richard Uppinghouse
Major Richard Louis Uppinghouse, 80, of Lincoln City died Dec. 30, 1998 in Lincoln City.
He was born in Spokane, Wash. on April 16, 1918 to Harold and Nina (Funk) Uppinghouse.
In 1948, Mr. Uppinghouse married Irma Goodnight. A career Air Force officer and veteran of World War II, he served tours of duty throughout the world.
After retiring from the military, he and his wife moved to Portland, where he worked in the hardware industry. Upon his retirement in 1985, he and his wife moved to Lincoln City.
Survivors include his son, Brian Uppinghouse of Toledo; a brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Dorenne Uppinghouse of Lincoln City; a sister-in-law, Judy Uppinghouse of Portland; and a granddaughter, Sarah Uppinghouse of Neotsu. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1987, and his son, Jeffrey.
Private inurnment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland. Pacific View Memorial Chapel is serving the family.
Betty Roberts
Betty Jean Roberts, 75, of Turner died Dec. 31, 1998.
She was born in Brownsville on Aug. 22, 1923. She was raised and graduated from school in Toledo. She married Dean W. Roberts on April 4, 1942. They moved to Yachats in 1958, to Newport in 1966, and to Salem in 1974.
Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker. She was a member of the Methodist church and Eastern Star. She enjoyed beachcombing, cooking and traveling.
Survivors include her husband, Dean, of Turner; sons Thomas L. Roberts and Guy W. Roberts, both of Salem; daughters Joyce L. Burwash of Salem and Joan L. Ruthruff of Albany; brothers William H. McKay of Colville, Wash. and James R. McKay of Sisters; a sister, Hazel Mason of Portland; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at Restlawn Funeral Home in Salem.
Charlie Smith
Charlie Ray Smith, 90, of South Beach died at his home on Jan. 3, 1999.
He was born in Seminole, Okla. on July 13, 1908. He had been a resident of South Beach for the past 40 years.
Mr. Smith married Aggie C. Neel in Willamina on May 25, 1957. For 20 years, he was employed with the Toledo Police Department as a police officer, before retiring in 1958. He was a Marine veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the Newport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2624, American Legion Post #116, and the Salvation Army Church. He was a volunteer at the Baptist church soup kitchen.
Survivors include his wife, Aggie; a daughter, Von Treba M. Griffith of Portland; sons Ricky R. Smith Denton of Beaverton and Donald L. Smith Denton of Medford; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wynona Huntley, in 1998; and a son, Kirby R. Smith, in 1981.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Interment will be in Eureka Cemetery in Newport. Bateman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Ernest Demaray
Ernest M. Demaray, 79, of Otis died at his home on Jan. 4, 1999.
He was born in Dayton on May 30, 1919. He graduated from high school in 1939. He went to Alaska, where he worked for the F.E. Company gold mining and at other jobs in Fairbanks and Anchorage.
From 1942 to 1945, he served in the Army Air Force as a B-17 pilot, flying 31 missions over Nazi Germany. He received an Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross, and was with the crews that flew the first shuttle missions to Russia. His memoirs about his wartime experiences have been published in military magazines. His dress jacket has been donated to the North Lincoln County Historical Museum in Lincoln City. He donated family artifacts from the Yukon and Alaskan Gold Rush days to the Paul Jensen Arctic Museum in Monmouth.
After the war, he spent four years running a country store and Texaco station at Grand Island Junction, then two years in San Diego, Calif., where he worked for Ryan Aeronautical Corporation. After moving to the south San Francisco Bay area in 1960, he worked as an aircraft controller and then as a U.S. Postal Service employee. He retired and returned to Oregon in 1984.
He enjoyed boating, flying, bicycling and swimming.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elois Edwina (Coats) Demaray of Otis; sons Richard Ernest of Portola Valley, Calif. and Milton Wayne of Fremont, Calif.; a brother, Harry Milton of Salem; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his second son, Douglas Edward, who died as an infant.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Panther Creek Senior and Community Center in Otis. Memorial gifts have been suggested to the Paul Jensen Arctic Museum at Western Oregon University, Monmouth.
Richard "Dick" Johnston
Richard W. "Dick" Johnston, 70, of Eugene died of cancer on Jan. 2, 1999.
He was born in Eugene on July 6, 1928 to Ward and Verna M. (Rawson) Johnston. He lived in Newport from 1952 through 1991, where he married his wife, Helen E. McFetridge, in 1953.
He served in the U.S. Army and was the owner of Johnston Construction in Newport. He retired in 1990.
Mr. Johnston enjoyed antique car restoration and woodworking, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; daughters Cindy Favreau of Eugene, Camilla Nye of Portland, Julie Vogel of Sacramento, Calif., Nanette Stevens of North Bend and Suzanne Mulkey of Coos Bay; brothers Robert Johnston of Eugene and Don Johnston of Newport; sisters Marodiene Doyle and Harriet Wullschleger, both of Eugene; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three of his siblings.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene, Eighth and Madison, Eugene. Inurnment will be held at Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or to a trust fund that has been set up at Washington Federal Savings for donations to the International Myeloma Foundation.
Howard "Doc" Watson Sr.
Howard William "Doc" Watson, Sr., 77, of Bandon died Dec. 31, 1998 in Bandon.
He was born in Salem on Nov. 7, 1921. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was in Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Tennessee when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was a journeyman/machinist for General Electric.
Mr. Watson moved to Bandon four years ago after living in Newport for about 10 years.
He enjoyed reading and talking about his World War II days in the Navy, and loved his dog.
Survivors include his sons Howard W. Watson, Jr. of Escondido, Calif., James Watson of Tualatin, Edward D. Watson of Salem, David Watson of Lafayette, Colo. and Robert Watson of Mesa, Ariz.; daughters Beverly Jean Clark and Patricia Ann Watts, both of Salem, and Audra Watson of Pratt, Kansas; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date.
David Flaming
David Dean Flaming, 66, of Newport died Jan. 5, 1999 in Mesa, Ariz.
He was born in Versailles, Mo. on July 22, 1932. He was a Korean-era Navy veteran, and owned/operated West Coast Linen Rental in Newport. He worked for 25 years prior at Mission Linen Industries.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo; daughters Terri Nolan of Gilbert, Ariz. and Deana Sue Celment of Newport; a son, Bruce Wayne Flaming of Newport; a sister, Elaine Fulfer; brothers Loren, Galen and Robert Flaming; and seven grandchildren, Robert Dean; Traci Jo, Joseph James, Ryan Wayne, Logan Louis, Joshua John and Jordan Phillip.
Visitation and services were held Thursday at Bueler Mortuary in Chandler, Ariz. Interment with military honors will be held at 9 a.m. today (Friday) at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix.
Lucille Nielson
Lucille Rose Nielson, 79, of Logsden died at Newport Rehabilitation & Specialty Care Center in Newport on Jan. 7, 1998.
She was born in Moscow, Idaho on Dec. 3, 1919 to John F. and Alma Gehrke Flomer. She was a 1940 graduate of Genessee High School in Genessee, Idaho. She was a longtime resident of the Logsden/Siletz area.
She married George Nielson in Portland on Oct. 19, 1944. He preceded her in death in 1995. For most of her life, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Judi Hertz, Sharon Flomer, Rhonna Lee, Tim Flomer, Anne Bascom, Sue Moberly, Julie Lynch and Evelyn Thompson.
Services will be Jan. 24 at the regular service of the Assembly of God Church in Siletz. Interment was in Eureka Cemetery, Newport. Bateman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
