Thomas Pole
Thomas Martin Pole, 77, of Newport died April 17, 2002 of complications from multiple myeloma.
He was born April 27, 1925 in Newark, N.J.
He graduated from high school and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943.
He served as a Navy pilot on aircraft carriers and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1964.
He began a second career in the restaurant business and became a restaurant manager for Far West Services of Corona del Mar, Calif.
In the mid-1970s, he was promoted to setting up restaurants throughout the East Coast.
He moved to Yachats in 1982 and became a real estate broker.
He established South County Properties and continued to do restaurant consulting work, along with managing the "Fishing Hole."
For most of his years at the coast, he lived in Waldport and Yachats.
He worked in the hardware and paint department at the Newport Wal-Mart for the past three years.
He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and woodcarving.
In 2000, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare form of cancer that was linked to his radiation exposure while serving as a Navy pilot on the Valley Forge in1955.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Pole-Wilhite of Portland, Pamela Pole of Dana Point, Calif., and Carolyn Pole of Escondido, Calif.; a son, Thomas Charles Pole of Camas, Wash.; two sisters, Iola Rice and Janet Sherwin; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 8 at the American Legion Hall, Post 116, 424 W. Olive St., Newport.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion, Post 116.
Alice Austin
Alice H. Austin, 88, of Vancouver, Wash. and formerly of Newport, died of Alzheimer's disease on June 5, 2001.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Newport First Christian Church.
Donations are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.
Ann Valentine
Ann Mary Valentine, 71, of Newport died of natural causes in Corvallis on June 15, 2001.
She was born in Taylor County, Iowa, on Sept. 13, 1929 to Ward D. and Faye F. Valentine.
She was employed by Pacific Bell in the Los Angeles, Calif., area for 33 years.
She started as an operator in 1951 and retired as an engineer in 1984.
Survivors include her sisters, Hollis Slama of Corvallis, Dorcas Norton of Monmouth, Lucille Perry of Mount Ayr, Iowa, Charlotte Nason of Newport, and Dorothy Zook of Burbank, Calif.; a brother, Howard Valentine of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and 23 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ward D. Valentine Jr., and Orville Dean Valentine; and one nephew.
No services are planned. McHenry Funeral Home of Corvallis handled the arrangements.
Julia Hulsey
Julia Muriel Hulsey, 66, of Waldport died of natural causes on July 8, 2000.
She was born in Sandpoint, Idaho on Aug. 26, 1933.
She graduated from Coquille High School. She worked as a grocery clerk at the former Grady's Market in Waldport for many years.
Prior to that work, she was employed as a secretary for Brand S Logging of Five Rivers.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed cross stitching and sewing.
Survivors include her daughters, Karen Wiedman and Teresa Alley; a son, Archie Hulsey, all of Waldport; a sister, Betty Farley, of Siletz; a brother, Byran Cotter of Sisters; grandsons Roger Flescher, Robby Kirby, Bruce Wiedman and Cole Kirby, all of Waldport; a granddaughter, Jodi Flescher of Bryson, Texas; and one great-grandchild.
A private graveside service for family and friends will be held at the Toledo Cemetery. Disposition is by cremation.
Contributions are suggested to Hospice, in care of Pacific Communities Health District Foundation, 930 SW Abbey St., Newport 97365, or Doernbecher Children's Hospital in memory of Kelsie Flescher. Bateman Funeral Home of Newport handled the arrangements.
Jezelle Bourke
Jezelle Kleiber Bourke, 46, of Adelaide, Australia died Dec. 8, 1998.
She was born in Newport on June 14, 1952 to Mel and Margaret Kleiber. She graduated from Newport High School in 1970.
She married Peter Bourke in the First Presbyterian Church of Newport in March 1973.
After her husband graduated from Oregon State University in Corvallis, the couple moved to Australia.
She graduated from the University of Southern Australia, School of Architecture, in March 1997 and worked for the John Maitland Architectural Firm at the time of her death.
Survivors include her son, Adam Bourke of Adelaide, Australia; a daughter, Sarah Bourke, of Adelaide; her mother, Margaret Kleiber of Newport; and sisters and brother-in-law Serena Benson of Tigard, Tina Williams, and Vera and Bernie Bourke of Bendigo, Australia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, in 1996.
Memorial services were held Dec. 13 at Mount Gambier, South Australia.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Nature Conservancy.
Edward Westrom
Edward Andrew Westrom, 93, of Fossil died at a care center in The Dalles on Dec. 24, 1998.
He was born in Winona, Minn. on Nov. 6, 1905 to Martin and Amanda (Carlson) Westrom.
He grew up in the Spokane area, then moved to Kunzua, near Fossil, to work in the mill on the green chain.
He married Anna Sarah Owens in Fossil on June 14, 1930.
They moved to Klamath Falls in the late 1930s, and he learned to be a welder, steam and ship fitter and plumber.
They moved to Bremerton, where he worked in the shipyards throughout World War II.
After the war, they returned to Klamath Falls, and Mr. Westrom worked out of Local Union #290, Steamfitters.
He retired in the mid-1970s to Newport and moved to Fossil in 1996.
He was a member of the Elks lodge and Steamfitters Union. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, fly-tying, art, painting, drawing and dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Anna S. Westrom of Fossil; three grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his twin sons, Donald and Douglas.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 9 at Isabelle Johnson Hall in Fossil.
Private interment will be held at the Fossil Cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in The Dalles is in care of arrangements.

Winnie Hoagland
Winnie Louise Christensen Hoagland, 96, of Portland died in Salem on Dec. 26, 1998.
She was born in Moroni, Utah on March 9, 1902 to Christen and Louise Christensen.
As a young woman, she worked as a beauty consultant at a department store in Salt Lake City.
She married Lawre Leroy Hoagland in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1984.
In 1944, she moved to Portland and spent the rest of her life as a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Gary Hoagland of Depoe Bay and Jack Hoagland of Salem; a stepson, Eugene Hoagland of San Leandro, Calif.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a niece, Anna Eldredge of Salt Lake City, Utah; and numerous other relatives.
Funeral services were held at the Moreland Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Portland.
Private interment was at Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
