Mable Florence Crooks
1915-2004
Mable Florence Crooks, 88, of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 26 due to congestive heart failure.
Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. A service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and interment will be at Shields cemetery in Cottage Grove.
She was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Elmira to Clare and Kate (Allegar) Ross.
She grew up in Marshfield and Coos Bay.
She married
Clifford Crooks in 1936. The couple lived in Lorane until they moved to Cottage Grove in 1947.
She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, country music and she especially enjoyed her family. In the 1930s and 1940s, she and her husband enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law: Darryl and Billie Crooks of Creswell and Rodney Crooks of Cottage Grove; grandchildren: Shannon, Darin and Jason Crooks, all of Cottage Grove; great-grandchildren: B.J., Brandon, Autumn and Derek of Cottage Grove; and nieces: Peggy Sayles of Cottage Grove and Barbara Keep of Eugene.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 22, 1988, granddaughter, Janelle Crooks on Oct. 27, 1994, and great-grandson, Jalen Crooks, Dec. 25, 2000.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice in lieu of flowers.
Dorris Bates
1940-2004
Dorris Bates, a life-long resident of the Creswell area, died Oct. 7 from a heart attack.
She was born May 5, 1940, in Little Rock, Ark., to Johnny and Dorris Houston.
She was raised in Creswell and completed the 11th grade.
She lived with her spouse, Gary Gavette, for 22 years.
She had lived in Cottage Grove, Creswell and Eugene.
She was a caregiver for 40 years and also worked as a waitress and homemaker.
She enjoyed reading, crafts, camping, going for drives, knitting and crocheting.
She was survived by Gavetter; her son: Randy Bates, of Goshen; her daughter and son-in-law: Cindy and Tim Cranmer, of Cottage Grove; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Monday at the Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Yvonne Elizabeth Spies
1924-2004
Yvonne Elizabeth Spies, a Eugene resident, died Oct. 26 at the age of 80 from age-related causes.
She was born to Ben and Olga Laremore on July 7, 1924, in Portland.
She attended Uni-High in Eugene and also attended nursing school.
She was married
to William E. Spies in Portland on July 22, 1944.
She lived in Eugene; Hilo, Hawaii; Seattle and Cottage Grove.
She worked as a montessori teacher.
She enjoyed walking, reading and word puzzles.
Her husband owned the Riverside Medical Group.
Her children attended school in Cottage Grove.
She is survived by her husband: Dr. William E. Spies, of Florence; her daughters: Yvonne Polkow, of Vancouver, Wash., Kristine Paime, of Henderson, Nev., Cheri Spies, of Eugene, and Mary Patricia Spies, of Lebanon, N.J.; her sons: William Spies, of Tacoma, Wash., David Spies, of Kelso, Wash., and Jonathan Spies, of Kawathae, Hawaii; her brother: Orin Wechsler, of Seattle; 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held at St. Marks Catholic Church on Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Camille E. Stout
1924-2004
Camille E. Stout, a 16-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Dec. 13 at the age of 80 from Alzheimers Disease.
She was born to Paul Fink and Gertrude Schardt in Cheyenne, Wyo., on Nov. 11, 1924.
She married
John R. Stout in Yuma, Ariz., in February 1949.
She graduated from high school and worked as a homemaker.
She also lived in Inglewood, Calif., San Diego, Calif., Honolulu, Hawaii, Montana and Elkton.
She enjoyed ceramics, oil painting, playing the electric organ, and walking and she loved animals.
She was a member of the CPO Wives Club in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
She is survived by her husband: John Stout of Cottage Grove; her brothers: Paul Funk of Hawthorne, Calif., Joseph Fink of Santa Barbara, Calif.; her daughters: Arlene Williams of Boring, Carolyn Odell of Sandy; her sons: John Stout Jr. of Central Point, Richard Stout of Cottage Grove; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial was held Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Cottage Grove. Arrangements were made though Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers disease Association in Portland.
Chester "Chet" Hosman
1908-2004
Chester "Chet" Hosman, a 74-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Feb. 22 at the age of 95 from age-related causes.
He was born March 7, 1908, in Goodwin, Okla., to Charles and Laura Hosman. His family moved to Myrtle Point when he was a child. He graduated from Myrtle Point High School. He moved to Cottage Grove in 1930.
He married
Minnie Ramsey Aug. 23, 1927, in Myrtle Point.
He worked at service stations and mills in the early years. He was a school bus driver for South Lane School District for 20 years and retired in June 1973.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, Sixth and Gibbs.
He was active in the community and volunteered with Senior Wheels from 1980 to 1992.
His wife preceded him in death in 2001 as well as a daughter.
Survivors include daughters: Bettie Fletcher of Albany, Jean Sarff of Dallas and Lorene Scott of North Bend; son: Lloyd Hosman of Knightstown, Ind., and son-in-law: Robert Raisor of Cottage Grove.
A private family gathering was held at Fir Grove cemetery in Cottage Grove.
Ed Kempfer
1950-2004
Ed Kempfer died March 27 from complications of cancer at the age of 53.
He was born June 17, 1950, in Baker City to James and Wanda Kempfer. He was a high school graduate.
He moved to Lindsay, Calif., in 1957 and then to Cottage Grove in 1977.
He married
Judy Hall in Cottage Grove Aug. 14, 1993.
He was the owner of a gas station and custodial service, worked as a mechanic at Betz Chevrolet and was a driver and then owner of his own trucking company for seven years.
His interests included car racing, where he raced in the sportsman class, and helping his grandkids experience life.
Survivors include stepson: Zack Hall; grandsons: Austin and Hunter Hall; and granddaughter: Summer Hall of Cottage Grove: Stepson: Travis Hall of Arlington, Va.; mother and stepfather: Wanda and Clark Springer; sister and brother-in-law: Bill and Cindy Hill; niece: Le Anne Essien; and nephew: Erick Essien of Visalia, Calif.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Nelda Fay Oviatt
1932-2004
Nelda Fay Oviatt, 71, of Santa Rosa, Calif., died March 3 from ovarian cancer.
She was born on Aug. 10, 1932, in Prineville to Jacob and Ruth Schwarzer. She moved with her family to Cottage Grove, where she attended and graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1950.
She married
Donald Oviatt on Dec. 10, 1950, in Crescent City, Calif. They lived there and in Brookings for several years before moving to Napa, Calif. He died in 1982.
She worked until January for the Napa School District as an instructional aide with children from kindergarten through high school.
She loved spending time with family, square and round dancing, traveling and singing in her church choir.
She is survived by a son: Donald James Jr. of Napa, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Suzzonne and Bobby Navarro of Crescent City, Calif., and Tami and Shawn Moore of Novato, Calif.; six grandchildren; brothers: Arthur Miller of Prineville, Karl and his wife, Lorraine, Miller of Hillsboro, and Daniel Schwarzer of Palmer, Alaska; and sister: Frieda Williams of Cottage Grove.
Memorial services are scheduled for March 27 at Forrestville Methodist Church and at Valley Oak School in Napa on March 30. Memorial contributions can be made to a favorite charity.
Gordon David Magnusson
1932-2004
Gordon David Magnusson, a 65-year resident of Cottage Grove, died April 29 at the age of 71.
He was born Oct. 17, 1932, to Salem and Hilda Magnusson in Saginaw.
He married
Patricia Martin in Cottage Grove April 8, 1955. He graduated from Cottage Grove High School. He attended Eugene Vocational from 1957-1959 and took various classes at Lane Community College.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was retired from Champion Friction Co. in Eugene.
His hobbies were fishing, all youth sports and his grandchildren.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Independent Order of Foresters.
Survivors include his wife; daughter and son-in-law: Debra and Todd Maus of Cottage Grove; granddaughters: Delsey and Demi Maus of Cottage Grove; brother: Don Magnusson of Washington; and sister: Caroline Klansnic of Cottage Grove.
No service was planned. Andreasons Cremation and Burial Service was in charge of arrangements.
