Mattie E. Abbot-Samson
1911-2004
Mattie E. Abbot-Samson, 93, of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 23 from age-related causes.
She was born March 5, 1911, in Wheeler, Ark., to Samuel and Minnie Huckaby.
She married
Charles Abbott, who died, and later married
a dear friend of the family, Elmer Samson, who also preceded his wife in death.
She formerly lived in Oakridge before moving to Cottage Grove where she lived for 40 years. Due to her declining health, her family moved her to be near them in Milwaukie.
She was a homemaker.
She was well-known for her quilts, having made hundreds, and she was an avid gardener.
She was a member of the Church of Christ at Sixth and Gibbs streets for 40 years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law: Peggy and Ted Jones of Milwaukie; three grandchildren and spouses: Donna Whalen and her husband, Shaun, Charles Jones and Carol Lindsay and her husband, Bob; three great-grandsons: David and Dustin Olson and Mike Whalen; stepdaughter: Hope Grazer; two stepgrandchildren: Terry Grazer and Gloria Sanborn; three sisters: Lena Leeper of Mesa, Ariz., Dola Neal of Salem and Sue Lightle of Bakersfield, Calif.; and three brothers: Howard, Lon and Ronald Huckaby, all of Bakersfield, Calif.
Visitation and a service were Tuesday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. A private interment was to be held at Fir Grove cemetery in Cottage Grove.

Cecil Ray Jenkins
1927-2004
Cecil Ray Jenkins of Bullhead City, Ariz., died Sept. 25 at the age of 77 from a heart attack.
He was born April 18, 1927, in Elmira to Bill and Stella Jenkins.
He was raised in Lorane.
He was a self-employed businessman in Bullhead City.
He was a 10-year Marine veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Lorine Jenkins; his parents: Bill and Stella Jenkins, of Lorane; and his brother: Don Jenkins, of Drain.
Survivors include his sisters: Peggy Sayles, of Cottage Grove, and Barbara Keep, of Eugene; his sons: Ray and Gary Jenkins, both of Springfield; and two grandsons.
A celebration of life will be announced later. Desert Lawn Memorial Gardens, in Mohave Desert, Ariz., is handling arrangements.
Charlotte Martin
1930-2004
Charlotte Irene Martin, 74, of Drain, died Oct. 15, 2004, from complications of surgery.
She was born on April 15, 1930, to Axel and Minnie Krantz in Baronett, Wisc. She married
Joseph Darrell Martin on Aug. 6, 1955, in Baronett, Wisc. They moved to Drain in 1955.
She was a retired school teacher, teaching second grade at Drain Elementary School.
She enjoyed being with her granddaughters.
She is survived by her husband: Joseph Martin; two sons: James Martin and Brad Martin, both of Drain; two brothers: Gordon Krantz of Shell Lake, Wisc., and Calvin Krantz of Elkmound, Wisc.; two sisters: Carol Kellerman of Cumberland, Wisc., and Claire Hopkins of Woodland, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Interment will be at the Drain City cemetery.
Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Jesse C. Crosby
1925-2004
Jesse C. Crosby, an 18-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Oct. 24 at the age of 78 from age-related causes.
He was born to Frank and Iva Crosby in Parkman, Maine, on Dec. 23, 1925.
He married
Charlene Sawyer in Cambridge, Maine, on Aug., 17, 1946. She preceded him in death.
He also lived in Garland, Maine, and Monterrey, Calif.
He served in the United States Navy in World War II.
He worked as a laborer and construction worker.
He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and reading.
He is survived by five sons: Richard Crosby of Winslow, Maine, Randy Crosby of Monterrey, Calif., James Crosby of Cottage Grove, John Crosby of Mollala and Casey Crosby of Oregon City; his daughter: Sandra Plantz of Cottage Grove; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Private family services were arranged by Andreas-ons Cremation and Burial Service in Eugene.
Charlotte Irene Martin
Charlotte Irene Martin, 74, of Drain, died Oct. 15, 2004 from complications of surgery.
Her memorial is scheduled for Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. at the Drain Civic Center in Drain.
Earl Murry
1917-2004
Earl Murry, a lifelong resident of Cottage Grove, died Sunday at the age of 87 from age-related causes.
He was born to John and Emma Murry in Cottage Grove on Oct. 4, 1917.
He was raised in the area and completed 10th grade.
He married
his second wife, Meltha Maddox Murry, on July 5, 1988, in Lane County.
He worked in logging as a timber faller.
He enjoyed fishing, farming and hunting.
He was a school board member for 30 years, where he received numerous awards, and he was a member of the Board of Trustees for Taylor Lane cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his first wife: Dorothy M. White; his brother: Roy Gilbert; and two sons: Earl L. Murry and Gilbert Monroe.
He is survived by his wife: Meltha Murry of Cottage Grove; his sons: John Alfred Murry of Redding, Calif., Robert Ernest Murry of Cottage Grove and Roy William Murry of Cottage Grove; his daughter: Elsie Jean Long of Malvern, Ark.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the London Grange. Memorial arrangements are being handled by Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Home.
Jimmie Clyde Gray
1933-2004
Jimmie Clyde Gray, a former resident of Cottage Grove, died Oct. 19 at the age of 71 in Silver Springs, Nev.
He was born in Pierre, S.D., as one of nine children to Clyde and Katherine Gray.
He worked as a machinist.
He served as a warrant officer in the United States Army, serving in Korea and two tours in Vietnam.
He earned a Bronze Star twice during 26 years in the military.
He did volunteer work for the V.A. in Cottage Grove and was a member of the Elks Lodge during his 15 years in the community.
He loved people.
He is survived by his wife: Raelene Ruth; his daughters: Renal Fortier of Springfield, Kimberly Gray of Williamsburg, Va., Leslie Salyer, of Wichita, Kan., Stacy Hughs of Wichita, Kan.; his son: Kevin Gray of Orida, Calif., seven grandchildren and four great-grandsons.
James Dennis
1927-2004
James Carl Dennis, a 14-year resident of Yoncalla, died Feb. 26 at the age of 77 from a heart attack.
He was born Feb. 15, 1927, in LeMesa, Texas, to Thomas and Sara Dennis. He grew up and attended school in Hillsboro, Texas.
He married
June Thompson in Califor-nia Jan. 19, 1958.
He formerly lived in Mission Viejo, Calif.
He was served in the U.S. Air Force.
He worked for Harvey Aluminum Co. in California and as a telephone lineman in Texas.
He was a rancher.
His hobbies included horses and hunting with his favorite hound, Blue Cindy.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Yoncalla Assembly of God church.
He earned many medals competing in the Golden Age Games in Louisiana, Texas, Wyoming and Kansas.
His son, Gary Dennis, and daughter, Carla Diane, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife; brother: Billy Joe Dennis of Cottage Grove; sisters: Mary Turner of Grandview, Texas; and Frances Ball and Barbara Dennis of Yoncalla; sons: Thomas Dennis of Arkansas and David Dennis of Apple Valley, Calif.; daughter: Becky Hughes of Tennessee; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A visitation was Monday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. A service was Tuesday and interment was at Fir Grove cemetery in Cottage Grove.
