Lee Bell George
1923-2004
Lee "Momma Lee" Bell George, a 23-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 4 at the age of 81 from complications of lung disease.
She was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Junction City, Colo., to Murray and Mary Hart.
She won the 2001 Sportswoman of the Year Diamond Award.
She used to work as a waitress in the restaurant industry.
She loved gardening, embroidery, playing pool and baking. She also spent time as a dog sitter and volunteer.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Moose Lodge of California and Cottage Grove and the Lions Club in California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack George.
Survivors include her brothers: Godfrey Von Gunten, of Pinole, Calif., and Frankie Von Gunten, of Paradise, Calif.; her daughter: Jean Ledford, of Gresham; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A service will be held in the spring.
Charles D. "Chuck" Cook, Jr.
1974-2004
Charles D. "Chuck" Cook, Jr., a lifelong resident of Cottage Grove, died Oct. 21 at the age of 30 as a result of an auto accident.
He was born to Charles D. Cook, Sr., on Sept. 25, 1974, in Cottage Grove.
He attended school in Cottage Grove.
He was employed at Fircrest Farms in Creswell for a number of years.
He liked to be outdoors and hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his father: Charles D. Cook, Sr. of Creswell; his stepmother: Bonnie Cook of Cottage Grove; sister: Trisha Cook of Cottage Grove; stepbrother: Jason Presley of Cottage Grove; daughter: Brittney Cook of Cottage Grove and his son: Anthony Cook of Cottage Grove.
No service was planned. A visitation was held Tuesday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Interment was at Fir Grove cemetery.
Betty Marge Morris
1929-2004
Betty Marge Morris, a 52-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Oct. 27 at the age of 75 from age-related causes.
She was born to Ray and Minnie Morris in Loretto, Neb., on Feb. 12, 1929.
She grew up in Nebraska.
She married
Elmer Earl Morris in Newmans Grove, Neb., on June 22, 1944.
She loved gardening, baking, shopping and bingo. She was known for her cinnamon rolls.
She attended the Family Praise Center and was a member of the Cottage Grove Moose Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in July of 1988, and her brother, Earl Morris, who died in 1965.
She is survived by her daughters: Betty Dockery, of Midall, Okla., Linda Hover, of Cottage Grove; six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Springfield Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.
Richard E. "Dick" Pulse
1937-2004
Richard E. "Dick" Pulse, a 15-year resident of Cottage Grove, died on Oct. 29.
He was born to Robert and Nellie Pulse on July 7, 1937, in Tidewater.
He was raised and educated in Tidewater and Waldport.
He served in the Army from 1960-1963.
He worked as a mill worker for Weyerhaeuser Co. for 35 years in Coos Bay before moving to Cottage Grove in 1989, where he worked until he retired.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family.
He was a member of the Moose and Eagles lodges and was a past president of the Empire VFW.
He is survived by his wife: Nona Pulse of Cottage Grove; his sons: Francis Lee of California, Bart Pulse of Roseburg, Mickey Pulse of Coos Bay; his daughters: Terie Alexander of Cottage Grove, Kelly Christofferson of Powers, Renea Mitchell of Davis, Calif., and Corinna Bevins of Beaverton; his brother: George Pulse of Mineral Wells, Texas; his sister: Virginia Miller of Nehalem; and 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at Nelsons Bay Area Mortuary in Coos Bay.
Lorene McCall
1916-2004
Lorene McCall, a 57-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Friday at the age of 88 from age-re-lated causes.
She was born to Jessie and Josephine Vernon on Sept. 4, 1916, in Gladewater, Texas.
She graduated from Gilmer Texas High School and attended Tyler Commercial College in Tyler, Texas.
She married
Jim McCall in Carlsbad, N.M., on Feb. 4, 1946.
She previously lived in Stayton and moved to Cottage Grove in 1947.
She worked at First National Bank for 19 years until she retired in 1977.
Her husband, Jim McCall, preceded her in death on March 10, 1997.
She was a member of the Pennoyer Church of Christ and the Cottage Grove Hospital Auxiliary.
She loved spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, working with flowers and working in her garden and with the hospital auxiliary.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Brent and Eileen McCall of Cottage Grove; her daughter: Charon White of Roseburg; her sister: Mary Stout, of Texas; and 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cottage Grove High School Athletic Scholarship Foundation.
Clara Crofford
1924-2004
Clara Dorothy Crofford, a 60-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Feb. 26 at the age of 80 from age-related causes.
She was born Jan. 21, 1924, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Leonard and Dora Noll.
She married
James Whitted. He died in 1961. She later married
Robert Crofford. He died in 1995.
She was a homemaker and worked as a CNA at Creswell Care Center for a short period of time.
She was a 4-H leader and raised horses, goats and rabbits with the organization.
She attended Catholic Church.
Her daughter, Gail Coop, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons: David Whitted and Alan Whitted of Cottage Grove; daughter: Patricia Raby of Dixon, Mo.; brother: Lee Noll of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
A private cremation was held. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date.
Alta Isabelle Colson
1921-2004
Alta Isabelle Colson, a former Cottage Grove resident, died Jan. 21 at the age of 83. She was residing at Mycroft Supportive Care Home in Eureka, Calif.
She was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Portland.
She and her husband, Chet, moved to the Arcata-McKinleyville, Calif., area in 1956 from Cottage Grove.
She worked for the U.S. Forest Service Nursery until her retirement in 1981.
She and her husband traveled throughout the country in their motor home.
She enjoyed rock hunting, gardening, flowers, animals and her family.
Survivors include sons: Gordon Colson and his wife, Sharon, of McKinleyville, Calif., and Wallace Colson and his wife, Sharon, of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter: Beverly Kenady and her husband, Ronald, of Cottage Grove; grandchildren: Mike and Joni Kenady, March and Doris Bailey, Susan Dodson and Gregory Kenady of Cottage Grove, Mark and Janelle Colson of Oakville, Wash.; Tom Colson of Bonny Lake, Wash.; Jack and Nichole Olson of Puyallup, Wash.; Kelly and Steve Rodden of Sherwood; Peter and Laurie Phillips of Fairfield, Calif.; Todd Colson of Sacramento, Calif.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Jan. 27 at Greenwood cemetery in Arcata, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, make contributions to a favorite charity in the name of Alta Colson.
Leslie Stevens
1950-2004
Leslie Stevens, a 26-year resident of Cott-age Grove, died March 8 at the age of 53 from heart failure due to an illness.
He was born on Dec. 10, 1950, in Niagra Falls, N.Y., to Almond and Pearl Stevens. He graduated from LaQuinta High School in Westminster, Calif., in 1969.
He previously lived in California and Eugene.
He lived with his domestic partner, Jim Ritcher, also of Cottage Grove, for eight years.
He had been superintendent for West Lawn Memorial Park and Lane Memorial Park Gardens since June 6, 1979. He received a superintendent of the year award in 2002, along with many other work-related awards.
He loved cribbage, computer games, ceramics, gardening and being a handyman. He was always helping other people.
Survivors include his companion; parents; brother: Mark Stevens of Corona, Calif.; sisters: Kathy Stevens of Corona, Calif., Charlotte Roberts of Eugene and Sharon Bilieu of Maryville, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service was held at the Chapel of Memories in Eugene Friday.
