Henry Leland "Lee" Vaughn
1926-2004
Henry Leland "Lee" Vaughn, a Cottage Grove resident since 1961, died May 2 at the age of 77 from age-related causes.
He was born June 16, 1926, in Lake City, Ark., to Will and Nancy Vaughn. He graduated from high school in California and moved to Cottage Grove in 1961. He studied at Lane Community College to become a millwright and completed classes in half the normal time.
He served three tours in the U.S. Army from April 27, 1946, to Oct. 3, 1951.
In Cottage Grove he worked at Heart Newspapers. He then worked his way up in the mills and retired from Weyerhaeuser Co. in 1987.
He married
Alice Watts in Walker March 29, 1980.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, rock collecting and watching "Jeopardy."
He was a member of the Moose and Elks lodges and American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Lee Vaughn.
He is survived by his wife; stepchildren: Debbie Maddox of Oakland and Rod Elliott of Sutherlin; six grandchildren and several of nieces and nephews.
Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Ray Graves
1936-2004
Ray Graves, 68, a 43-year resident of the Cottage Grove area, died July 14 of congestive heart failure.
He was born Feb. 22, 1936, to Fletcher and Lou Belle Graves of Murphy, N.C. He completed the 11th grade in Murphy, N.C.
He was married
for 49 years to Barbara Allen.
He was a truck driver and also served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a truck driver at Weyerhaeuser Co. for 27 years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and helping his wife with the garden. He was a member of the Disabled Veterans Association and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He recently received an award from Weyerhaeuser for his 27 years of work.
Survivors include daughter: Debbie Fuller of Cottage Grove; son: Jason Allen of Portland; three sisters: Jean McDonald, Joan Dockery and Faye Chastain all of Murphy, N.C.; one brother: Carl Graves of Murphy, N.C.; and three granddaughters: Sydney Allen of Cottage Grove, Kim Smith of Bend and Shanna Antonelli of Cottage Grove.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Graves, and by his parents, Fletcher and Lou Belle Graves.
A service was held Monday at Calvary Baptist Church in Cottage Grove. Arrangements were under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Zelma "Dee" Glavin
1922-2004
Zelma "Dee" Glavin of Cottage Grove died on Tuesday of age related causes. She was 82.
She was born on Feb. 9, 1922, in Bernice, Okla., to Omar Woods and Hazel Ethell. She was a former resident of Anacortes, Wash., and Santa Monica, Calif.
She attended UCLA for three years and later became a banker. She was also a cook and worked at Oak Harbor Air station in Whidbey Island, Wash.
She attended Summit Park Bible Church. She taught Sunday school, took care of the homebound and was a deaconess.
She also enjoyed cooking, spending time with her grandchildren, growing flowers, fishing and feeding the hummingbirds. She also enjoyed sports, especially baseball, football and basketball.
She married
Vernon Raasch in 1943 and divorced in 1962. She married
Thomas Glavin in Cresent City, Calif. on Oct. 15, 1964.
Survivors include two stepsons: Jim Glavin of Springfield and Russell Glavin of Portland; two cousins: Leamon Capps of Los Angeles, Calif., and Merle Parker of Phoenix, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren: John, Charlene, Leamon, James, Aaron, Joshua and Ian.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lynn Andre Raasch.
A service was held Monday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Interment of the remains will be at Fernhill cemetery in Anacortes, Wash.
LeRoy Cartwright
1916-2004
LeRoy Cartwright, 88, of Dorena, died July 23 from age-related causes.
He was born July 18, 1916, in Wheaton, Mo. He completed 10th grade.
He married
Ruth Marilyn Pederson in Emmett, Idaho, April 15, 1940.
He worked as a millwright at Bohemia Lumber and also worked at conservation corps camps.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a 40-year member of "Mr. and Mrs. League" at Cottage Grove Bowl. He served on the school board for Dorena School.
Survivors include his sons: Carl Cartwright of Dorena, Robert Cartwright of Alameda, Calif., and Steven Cartwright of Reno, Nev.; daughter: Lisa Tripp of Cheshire; sister: Evelyn of Texas; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A service and interment was held Friday at Emmett cemetery in Emmett, Idaho. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Margaret Cox
1913-2004
Mary Margaret Cox, of Yoncalla, died Sunday at the age of 91 from age-related causes.
A private cremation was held. A service is Thursday at 2 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
She was born June 4, 1913, to Alex and Cyrilla Lecluyse in Port Haney, British Columbia.
She married
LeRoy Cox Feb. 1, 1940, in Roseburg. She and her husband lived on the same ranch in Yoncalla for 60 years.
She was a homemaker.
She loved her family, especially her children. She enjoyed gardening, baking and walking her Boston terrier, Fritzie, daily. She made denim quilts, enjoyed canning and was an avid apple peeler.
She was a longtime member of the Catholic Church in Drain.
Survivors include her daughter: Nancy Benzel of Yoncalla; daughter and son-in-law: Jeannette and Dale McLeod of Colville, Wash.; granddaughters and spouses: Cindy and Allen Davis of Colville, Wash., Tracy and Shon Inabnit of Arlington, Wash., and Becky and Scott Gerrard of Oakland, Calif.; grandson and wife: Corey and Marita Benzel of Yoncalla; grandson: Scott McLeod of Colville, Wash.; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Ezekial Patrick Casteel

Ezekial Patrick Casteel of Cottage Grove was born premature and died Aug. 17, 2004.
His parents are Warren and Eugenia (Cook) Casteel of Cottage Grove. His grandparents are Benjamin and Diana Cook of Cottage Grove.
A graveside service and interment will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Fir Grove cemetery. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Irene Hodgson
1916-2004
Ruby Irene Hodgson, an 81-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 19 at the age of 88 from age-related causes.
She was born May 4, 1916, to George and Effie Ballew in Medicine Hat, Canada. She moved with her family to Cottage Grove in 1923 and graduated from Cottage Grove High School.
She married
Elmer McCoy in 1936 and he died in 1949. She married
Alvin Hodgson in Idaho Oct. 23, 1967.
She was a well-known grocery clerk at Wolfards Grocery in Cottage Grove from 1949 to 1967.
She loved her family. She loved children and Halloween was a special time for her. She enjoyed reading, bowling, gardening, sewing, working crossword puzzles and traveling with her husband in their motorhome.
She was a member of the Garden Club and Lane County Extension Club.
Survivors include her son: Mason McCoy of Yreka, Calif.; daughter: Mary Greenley of Montague, Calif.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband, sister and brother preceded her in death.
Visitation was held Thursday and a service was Friday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Interment was at Fir Grove cemetery in Cottage Grove.
Harold Tapp
1914-2004
Harold Tapp, a 61-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 21 at the age of 90 from cancer.
He was born Aug. 9, 1914, in Renton, Wash., to Louis and Emma Tapp.
He was raised in Elkton and completed eighth grade at Muddy Flats. He was a member of CCC at which time he made and played his own violin.
He married
Mae Leatherwood May 19, 1936. She died a few years later. He married
Jane Harris June 7, 1952, in Grants Pass.
He was a truck mechanic and worked for R&W; Trucking Co., Bohemia, Georgia Pacific and Pass Creek Paving.
He enjoyed woodworking; repairing pianos, music boxes and clocks; and building player pianos. He was an Intarsia artist and has two pieces of work at the Cottage Grove Museum. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He built his own home, fireplace and patio with rock he and his wife collected, sliced and polished. He also repaired the nickelodeon for the carousel that will be used in a proposed mining and timber park.
He loved people, nature, word search puzzles, jokes and life.
He was a lifetime member of the Masonic and Elks lodges.
He was preceded in death by his wife and daughter, Sue Harris.
No service is planned. A private cremation was held at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove. A register book is available at Magnolia Gardens.
