Becky Petricko
Becky Jean Petricko, a longtime Hood River, Ore., resident, died Aug. 21, 2008, at her residence. She was 62 years of age.
Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Odell United Methodist Church.
Becky was born Aug. 4, 1946, in Oregon City, Ore., to Henry and Verle (Day) Redhead. She was raised and educated in Oregon City and graduated from Lake Oswego High School in 1964. She moved to Hood River in 1965. On Nov. 12, 1966, she and Jerry Petricko were married in Hood River.
Becky worked as program director at KIHR for four years and then worked for two years for the Cascade Shopper where she was responsible for advertising layout. She then worked as a clerk for Hood River Supply for eight years and was also responsible for the co-op's newsletter.
Becky traveled to several areas giving talks to co-ops on formulating newsletters. She worked as a clerk for Diamond Fruit Company at the Odell Packing Plant for four years and then spent the next eight years at her favorite job, administrative assistant for mountain operations at Mt. Hood Meadows.
Becky's 30 years of volunteer work included youth group director at Odell United Methodist Church, counselor and camp director at Camp Yallani and 4-H Leader for the "Gilhouley Gauchos.' An accomplished equestrienne, she enjoyed riding and horse camps.
She was an avid reader, wrote poetry, studied the Dakota Sioux, enjoyed hiking, canoeing, charcoal painting, arts and crafts and spending time with her grandson. Christmas was her beloved holiday. Becky spent months in preparation for Christmas.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Perticko; her mother, Verle Redhead, of Hood River; daughter, Missy Halter, and son-in-law, Todd, of Kennewick, Wash., and their son, Christopher; brothers-in-law Andy Petricko, of Salem, Ore., and Skip Petricko, of Tygh Valley, Ore.; and sister-in-law, Rose Frazer, of Gresham, Ore.
Becky was preceded in death by her father and brother and best friend, David Redhead.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of Hospice, the Odell Fire Department, the Marge Raasch Scholarship or the Hukari Animal Shelter in care of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; (541) 386-1000.

Ted Wordsworth
Ted Randall Wordsworth was born to Chrystell June (Seals) and Earl Ephraim Wordsworth on April 22, 1952, in Spokane, Wash. He passed away at his home in Hood River, Ore., on Aug. 11, 2008, at the age of 55.
Growing up, Ted lived in Spokane until the age of 9 at which time the family moved to Seattle. When he was 16, he moved to Hood River.
Ted set off for Alaska, working as a commercial fisherman in the summer and an EMT the rest of the year. He began spending his winters in Hood River in 1999, working as a plumbing contractor, but when summer came around his love of commercial fishing drew him back to Alaska, where he continued to work for many years.
Ted loved to be on the ocean; his family joked that he had saltwater for blood. He also enjoyed traveling and was able to visit Hong Kong, Indonesia, India and Hawaii.
Ted liked tinkering and could fix just about everything that needed fixing. He kept the household running smoothly for his family. Always outgoing and friendly, Ted never knew a stranger.
He is survived by his mother, Chrystell Cherrington, of Hood River; sisters Gayle Nelson, of Emmett, Idaho, Linda Thomas, of Nampa, Idaho, and Beth McCarty, of Hood River; brothers Mark Wordsworth, of Kirkland, Wash., and Dave Wordsworth, of Bothell, Wash.; stepsisters Diane Roub, of Portland, Ore., Lelaine White, of Ephrata, Wash., and Cheri' Denton, of Portland; stepbrother Donnie Cherrington, of White Salmon, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. at the Hood River Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jim Beals officiating. Ted's family suggests memorial contributions be made to Heart of Hospice, 1020 Wasco St., Suite C, Hood River, OR 97031. Gardner Funeral Home handled cremation arrangements.

Wilfred Miller
Bill Miller, longtime resident of Hood River, Ore., passed away peacefully on May 12, 2008, at 8 p.m. at the age of 97.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Phil, and now they are together again. He is survived by his sister, Eva Sabo, from Roseville, Calif., sisters-in-law Valerie Tribou and Matilda Dorland, of The Dalles, Ore., nieces Lynn Flathmann and Carol Koehler and nephews Don Miller and Ray Sabo Jr.
Bill, known to his family as Grandpa Uncle Bill (GUB) will be missed and always remembered.
Bill was born June 23, 1910, in Blackburn, England. His family sailed to America when he was 2 and later crossed the U.S. in a Model T Ford, settling in Northern California.
Bill grew up on the streets of San Francisco and, as a youth, worked as a messenger delivering messages by bicycle for 1 cent each, holding onto the cable car to maneuver the steep hills of San Francisco.
Bill spent 41 years with the Bank of America in Northern California before retiring with his wife to Hood River
Bill was active in the Hood River community as a 23-year member of the Hood River Elks Lodge 1507, and he enjoyed great fellowship with his many friends. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Bill was an avid golfer and bowler up until the last couple of years. He was very proud of having scored five holes in one over his lifetime.
Bill's amazingly positive attitude, love of his many friends and family, active lifestyle and his incredible sense of humor surely were some of the secrets to his longevity.

Robert Kirkwood
Robert H. Kirkwood, a longtime resident of Hood River, Ore., went home to be with the Lord on May 12, 2008, at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore., with family by his side. Robert was born Aug. 8, 1934, at Omaha, Neb., and was 73 years of age.
A service to celebrate his life is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the First Baptist Church, 1889 Belmont Drive, Hood River. Oscar Stenberg III will officiate. Private graveside rites will precede Saturday's service at the Idlewilde cemetery.
Robert, or more commonly known to family and friends 'Bob, ' was born in Nebraska but moved with his parents, Robert H. and Alberta (Carson) Kirkwood, to Hood River, Ore., in the 1940s. He attended schools in Hood River, graduating in 1954, and went on to a year at the University of Oregon. Bob enjoyed sports while in high school and spent his summers in Dufur working on a farm.
His high school sweetheart was Judith Rae Casteel and they wed on Feb. 6, 1955. To this union were blessed three daughters. Bob served his country in the U.S. Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
The family continued to live in Hood River through the years and Bob worked for the Central Sales and Northwest Natural Gas Company (where he achieved salesman of the month several times and salesman of the year). He also worked for the Forest Service, Hood River Distillers and, most recently, for Rosauers.
Bob enjoyed his family; his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. He also enjoyed the great outdoors: fishing, hunting, photography or traveling. He will be fondly remembered doing all of these events in his shorts and long tube socks.
He was active in the First Baptist Church of Hood River and an active member since he and Judy wed there some 53 years ago. Bob also served his community as a volunteer firefighter and as one of the first Hood River volunteer EMTs. He served our city as a councilman for four years in the mid 1980s.
Bob is survived by his wife, Judy, at their home in Hood River; three daughters, Sally and her husband, Ralph Duddles, of Petersburg, Alaska, Karen and her husband, Randy Wood, of Hermiston, Ore., and Deborah and her husband, Michael Halliday, of Parkdale, Ore.; seven grandchildren: Matthew Duddles, of Petersburg, Alaska, Jeremy Duddles, of Avian, AFB, Italy, Elizabeth and her husband, Jeremy Anderson, of The Dalles, Ore., Bob and his wife, Jessie Wood, of The Dalles, Ore., Michelle Halliday, of Bend, Ore., Andrew Halliday, of Parkdale, Ore., and Scottie Halliday, of Parkdale, Ore.; eight great-grandchildren: Andrew Taylor Duddles, Dillon Matthew Duddles, Alayna Adele Duddles, Calean Anderson, Ian Anderson, Ellie Anderson, Alex Wood and Luke Wood; brother, Joseph Kirkwood; sister, Joyce Hyde; and numerous other family and many, many friends that he has collected over the years. He was preceded in death by only his parents.
Memorials may be made in memory of Bob to the Horizon Christian School in care of Anderson's.

June Gerking
June Melvina (Paasch) Gerking, age 90, died May 14, 2008, at the Hood River Care Center in Hood River, Ore. Services will be held on Monday, May 19, at 11 a.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. A reception will follow.
June was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Hood River, Ore., to William and Kirsten (Ostergard) Paasch. She was raised and educated in Hood River, attending Pine Grove Grade School and graduating from Hood River High School in 1936. Following high school, she clerked at the Paris Fair, Cobbs Variety, Sprouse Reitz, Hood River Laundry and then for the Hood River School District as a baker at the high school for nine years, retiring in 1980. She also packed fruit in the valley at private packing houses, Apple Growers Association, Pooley's, Stadleman's, Duckwall's and Diamond Fruit.
On Aug. 2, 1945, she and Samuel Gerking were married in Vancouver, Wash.
June enjoyed quilting, baking cakes and decorating, quilting, embroidery and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel, in 1981 and two brothers, Allen and John Paasch.
June is survived by her daughter, Beverly Lamont, of Pendleton, Ore., and son, Frank Gerking, of Barrow, Alaska; a brother, Willian Paasch, and sister, Betty Hutson, both of Hood River, Ore. Six grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Vault interment will be at Idlewilde cemetery.

JoAnn Simons
JoAnn Ellen Simons passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at her home in Hood River, Ore.
She was born Aug. 16, 1932, at Bear River, Minn., the seventh child of Thomas and Mabel Coyne. She grew up there on a farm until her mother died and the family moved to the Northwest. In 1950, she graduated from Sweet Home High School.
On Aug. 11, 1956, she married Daniel Charles Simons in Stevenson, Wash. They raised their three children in Albany, Grants Pass and Corvallis. In 1999 they moved to Hood River to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren.
JoAnn worked in medical records at Albany General Hospital. She also earned her real estate license and was a tax preparer. JoAnn spent many winters in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., where she found relief from the rheumatoid arthritis that had afflicted her since early adulthood.
In Lake Havasu she enjoyed singing with the community choir. In her younger years, she also was active in an artists group and enjoyed oil painting.
JoAnn loved politics and science. Always curious and interested in many things, she delighted her grandchildren with science experiments they would do together. One of her favorite Christmas gifts was a solar panel to power small appliances.
JoAnn is survived and will be greatly missed by her husband, Dan, of Hood River; her daughter, Mylene Walden, and her husband, Greg, of Hood River; her daughter, Marta Simons, of Hood River; and her son, Mark Simons, and his wife, Debi, of Salem, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
A private service for JoAnn will be held Monday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hood River.

Joan Bright
Joan Robinette Bright, a resident of Wilsonville, died on Friday, May 2, 2008, in Portland. She was 88 years of age.
Joan was born to Chester and Ann (Feeney) Smith on Jan. 6, 1920, in Malta, Mont. She graduated from Malta High School in 1938 and worked as a phone operator for a small independent phone company in Northern Montana.
Just prior to World War II, Joan moved west to Portland, where she worked at the Swan Island Shipyard as a telephone operator. Shortly after her relocation, Joan was married . The couple was later divorced and Joan moved to Newport to be near family.
She found work at the P.U.D. in Newport and was the secretary to the general manager. It was at this job that she became acquainted with William 'Bill' Bright, a businessman who worked closely with Joan's boss. The passing greetings shared in the office later blossomed into a courtship when both Bill and Joan were invited to a company party, and were the only single adults in attendance. The couple later moved to Portland, where they were joined as husband and wife in 1969.
Joan's first concern was caring for her home and family. She enjoyed being a homemaker and ensuring the welfare of her family. Her second line of business was assisting Bill with the family business, Western Power Products Inc. They set up shop in Hood River, where they resided for 19 years, and Joan worked as a bookkeeper, a secretary and a partner.
Bill and Joan traveled the world introducing and selling their product. Joan loved it and had a social side to her that was contagious. Regardless of their destination, she would befriend the wives of well-known executives and businessmen, creating lasting relationships.
In 1987 Bill and Joan sold their business and retired. The returned to the Portland area in 1992 and spent their retired lives traveling and taking a total of 13 cruises to all different worldly locations.
Joan had many interests. She loved her family; she was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing. She was a very intelligent individual, gracious, and had a witty sense of humor.
Joan is survived by her husband, Bill, of Wilsonville; son, Larry Sanguras, of Hood River; daughters Mary Olson, of Salem, and Betty Bright, of Minneapolis; along with eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, one brother and two sisters.
A funeral service was held May 13 in Portland. Interment was held at Lincoln Memorial Park.

William Bothwell
William Avery Bothwell, 'Bill, ' passed away at his home with family by his side on May 21, 2008.
A service to celebrate his life is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Anderson's Tribute Center. Graveside rites and military honors will follow at Pine Grove cemetery.
William was born March 17, 1923, at Ponca City, Okla., to Harry Wallace and Jessie Perry (Cochran) Bothwell. He grew up in Ponca City and spent summers at the family's homestead in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Bill was an outstanding high school football player and was awarded a full scholarship at Oklahoma State University (formally Okalahoma A&M) where he played varsity football until the fall of 1942.
In September 1942 Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country proudly in World War II. He served in the central Pacific and saw action at Tarawa, Saipan, Guam and Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to Oklahoma to continue his college education and to play football at Oklahoma State University.
On March 5, 1946, Bill married Dorothy Heinz, of The Dalles, Ore., and they had three children. They moved from Oklahoma to Colorado where Bill was employed by the Soil Conservation Service (United States Department of Agriculture). The family moved from Grand Junction, Colo., to Las Vegas, N.M., in 1962 and remained there until 1973 when Bill and Dorothy moved to Winnemucca, Nev. Bill retired in 1980 and they moved to Hood River, Ore.
Bill's hobbies included woodworking, gardening, camping, fishing, and hunting. He was a member of the Odell Methodist Church and the Odell Lions Club.
Bill is survived and will be dearly missed by his special friend and companion, Wilma Plog, of Odell, Ore.; his children: son, Bill P. Bothwell, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and daughter, E. Ann Hills, and son-in-law, Mike, of Colstrip, Mont., and grandchildren Jeffery and Melissa Hills, of Hillsboro, Ore., and Douglas Hills, of Lubbock, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, James Michael, in 1978; and his wife, Dorothy, in 1997.
The family suggests that any memorials be made in Bill's memory to Heart of Hospice of Hood River, Ore., and sent in care of Anderson's Tribute Center.
