Halstead Robison
Halstead Addison Robison, 97, died on July 12, 2008, at Skyline Hospital in White Salmon, Wash. He was born in Formosa, Kansas, on April 17, 1911, to Julius Ceaser Robison and Eva Leatha 'Slaughter' Robison; he also lived in Montrose, Kansas.
When he was older, he enrolled in the United States Civilian Corps in Marshall, Ark. On March 29, 1937, he arrived on camp at Cerice, Idaho. His duties were clearing trees right away for telephone lines; clearing ditches beside the road land; assist First Aid and on the survey crew and jackhammer crew. On Sept. 30, 1937, he was discharged from the CC headquarters in Lewiston, Idaho.
In the fall of 1937 he came to Oregon with his mother. He worked in the fruit harvest, worked on the toll bridge, and in timber and other various jobs. On Oct. 1, 1942, he entered the service and was sent to Little Rock, Ark., as a hospital orderly. From there he was sent to Kessler Field, Miss., as a surgical technician; he spent three years in the service.
On April 10, 1944, he married
Ellouise Virginia Mills in Kessler Field, Miss. He was discharged from service in 1946.
Hal and Ellouise came back to Hood River and he got work for the City of Hood River. He was the water superintendent for 23 years. He retired in 1973.
Hal's hobbies were carving wooden animals, making quilts, cooking, and pulling weeds and keeping things looking nice.
Surviving are his wife, Ellouise; son, Julius, and daughter-in-law, Barbara, of White Salmon, Wash.; three grandchildren and one stepchild.
He was preceded in death by two sons and one grandson, one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services are pending. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Gorge or one's choice.
Catherine Huskey
Catherine Marie Huskey, 84, a resident of Hood River, passed away at a local care facility on Friday, July 25, 2008.
She was born on June 15, 1924, in The Dalles, Ore., during cherry harvest to Frank and Georgia May (Witherell) Mann. She was the youngest of 13 children and a twin.
Her family moved to California when she was a baby and then returned to Oregon as a small child after the death of her mother. Her father was a carpenter by trade, and the family lived in many small towns throughout the Northwest where her father did remodeling and worked on fruit ranches during harvest season.
Catherine married
Gordon (Bud) Huskey in Vancouver, Wash., on April 13, 1951. They lived in Tieton, Wash., for a number of years. While in the Yakima Valley they were members of a bowling league, winning many friends and bowling trophies along the way.
In the mid-1970s Kate and Bud moved to Mosier, Ore. They were married
for 40 years when Gordon passed away in 1991.
Kate worked in canneries and was a waitress in a number of restaurants for 30-plus years. She was a plain-spoken woman; she always let you know just what she was thinking, and you knew where you stood with her.
Throughout their years together, Kate and Bud enjoyed camping and fishing; Kate especially enjoyed camping because Bud would always do the cooking while out camping.
She enjoyed crafts and handwork, making lovely items until her rheumatoid arthritis no longer allowed her to work on them. She enjoyed putting together jig-saw puzzles, card games, and reading.
One of her favorite pastimes was watching sports on television. She tried not to miss any televised baseball games, and always watched the World Series. In fact, if she was out visiting she made it a point to get back in time for the games.
For the last several years Kate lived in the Hood River Care Center, enjoying the care and activities; and made many friends there. She especially enjoyed the bingo games, winning many prizes; and the annual excursion up the Columbia on the Sternwheeler. 'It is wonderful to be out enjoying the fresh air and watching the scenery, ' she would say.
Kate was the last surviving of 13 children: Maude, Edd Sam, Harriet, Lucy, Nellie, Henry, Bessie, Francis, Rosie (Delphine), Robert, Frank and her twin sister, Caroline.
She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones. She was a joy to know and will be missed.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Mosier Grange. Private cremation held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Russell Manchester
Russell Dean Manchester, 79, passed away Aug. 26, 2008, in Mead, Wash. He was born Oct. 12, 1928, in North Loup, Neb., to Ira and Nell Manchester.
Russell was a veteran of the Korean War and continued his distinguished government service in the U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, serving as Officer in Charge.
Russell was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Opal (Kniesteadt) Manchester. He is survived by his children: Sharon (William) Myers, of Waterford, Mich., Shelly (Dr. Richard) Fici, of Shelby Township, Mich., Karen Franks, of Mead, Wash., and Russell E. Manchester, of Spokane, Wash.; grandchildren: Joshua, Adam (Crystal) Franks, Theresa (Shawn) Worley, Mike Manchester, and Ricky, David, and Michael Fici; step-granddaughter Deborah Myers; and great-granddaughters Jaden and Addison Franks, and Michela Spena.
Russ made a huge impact on everyone he met and will be missed by all he touched in life. A celebration of Russell's life was held Sunday, Aug. 31, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 2404 N. Howard, Spokane, Wash. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Spokane, 121 S. Arthur, Spokane, WA 99202.
Private inurnment in The Dalles, Ore., will take place at a later date.
John W. Moore
John Wesley Moore was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Hood River, Ore., to John Markley Moore and Ethel Mae (Camp) Moore.
He joined the Navy while he was a senior at Hood River High School. John was in the Navy from 1945-1946.
After serving in the Navy, he attended Oregon State College at Corvallis where he graduated. He was an active member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.
In 1950 he moved to Seattle, Wash., where he was employed at the Boeing Aircraft Company for 37 years.
John married
Helen Ramona Blanton (Mona) May 2, 1952. They had five children: Steven Wesley, David Markley, Ronald Allen, who lived two months, Debra Joan and Karen Elaine.
John was a Boy Scout leader for several years and had been a Boy Scout growing up. He and the boys had lots of memorable outings with the scouts. The family also enjoyed camping together.
For 50 years, John had participated in a Longitudinal Study out of Penn State University. He was one of the first in this area to volunteer. He donated a brain sample for study after his death.
He was an active member of the Boeing Roadrunner Club, a camp recreational group, for over 30 years. John was a member of Cedar Cross United Methodist Church, where he served as a deacon and did some maintenance work. He belonged to the Nomads, which is a Methodist Organization, and worked on charity assignments in Texas and California, and was on the Nomads Sunshine Committee.
John retired in 1987 from the Boeing Company. He and his wife traveled across the U.S. in their motor home. Together they also made many trips overseas, which included trips to China, New Zealand and the Middle East.
He died of cancer complications July 10, 2008, in Bethany at Providence Pacific in Everett, Wash., with his wife and family at his side.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Helen R.; four children: Steven, David, Debra and Karen; Steve's wife, Andrea, and their girls, Grace and Jane Heinze; David's wife, Jacquelyn, and their children, Michelle, Michael and Amanda; Debra and her husband, Larry Abbott, and their children, Jeffrey and Janelle; and Karen and her husband, David Woodward; sisters Frances Henne (Hood River, Ore.), Betty Britain (Pendleton, Ore.) and Mary and husband Jim Patterson (Hood River, Ore.) and many extended family members.
John was a wonderful, caring husband and father. He was a true friend and always willing to help when and where he could. He will be truly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Cedar Cross Methodist Church, 1210 132nd St. S.E., Mill Creek, Wash., on Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m.
Harry Adams
Harry Ray Adams, 61, passed away of a heart attack at his home in Odell, Ore., Saturday, July 12, 2008. He was born Oct. 27, 1946, in Hotchkiss, Colo., to Merle and Dorothy (Nicholson) Adams. His family moved to Hood River, Ore., when Harry was very young. He attended schools in Hood River and graduated from Wy'east High School in 1965.
Harry married
Diane Elaine Irwin in Hood River on Sept. 22, 1966, and was inducted into the army in October of 1966 and served as a medic in Augusta, Ga., where their first son, David, was born. Harry and Diane returned to Hood River where their son, Harry Jr., was born.
Harry went to work for Dee Hardboard as a lab technician for several years before being employed at Harvey Aluminum, Martin Marietta Aluminum and Northwest Aluminum. He worked at the aluminum plant for 30 years and worked his way up to maintenance manager. Harry was very involved in the steelworkers union and served as its local union president while at the plant.
When Northwest Aluminum closed in The Dalles, Harry went back to college and graduated with honors and a degree in accounting. After graduating Harry went to work at Cardinal Industrial Glass, at its inception in 2004, where he was the maintenance manager.
Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his sons and wife. He loved anything to do with outdoor activities. Harry especially enjoyed his large garden and woodworking in his shop. He was an avid fan of Little League and coached his boys through many years of baseball.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister. Harry is survived by his wife, Diane; his son, David, and daughter-in-law, Julie; grandchildren Scarlett and Grant; his son, Harry Jr., and daughter-in-law, Monique; sisters Ila Gartman and Mary Lou Harger; and brothers Theon Lemon, John Miller and Jim Miller.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Donna Stanley, and her husband, Paul; his much-loved nieces, Mindy Northrop, Holly Antonio and their families; and many other nieces and nephews. He will be loved and missed by everyone who knew him.

Lois Sheldrake
Lois Emily Sheldrake, of Corvallis, Ore., died July 4, 2008, in Corvallis at the age of 93. She was born Dec. 12, 1914, to Wilbur H. (Purl) Sheirbon and Della Leona Latham Sheirbon, in Alexander, Iowa. In December 1921 Lois, along with her older sister, Leona, and their parents moved from Iowa to Odell, Ore., in the Hood River Valley.
She grew up on what was known as the 'Netherby Ranch' in Odell. She graduated from Odell Union High School in 1932 and later attended business college. She married
John L. Sheldrake in 1937 in Hood River, Ore.
They lived in Hood River until 1961 when they moved to Corvallis. She was employed at Oregon State University as administrative assistant records clerk in the Civil Service personnel office from 1962 to 1976, when she retired.
She enjoyed traveling, music, playing the organ, photography, flowers, working in the garden, and her family.
She enjoyed collecting many things, including antique buttonhooks, and agates that she and John found at the beach and polished. These were kept in bowls for the grandchildren to play with. She also had many Indian arrow heads which she had found on the Netherby Ranch as a child.
She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church in Hood River, and was an active member in the First United Methodist Church of Corvallis.
Lois is survived by two sons, Arlen L. and his wife, Rita, of Portland, Ore., and Roger H. and his wife, Cheri, of Corvallis; daughter-in-law Barbara, of Silverton; seven grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. She has one surviving brother, Joe Sheirbon, of Odell, Ore., and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John L., whom she was married
to for 54 years; eldest son, John W.; brother, Leonard Sheirbon; sister, Leona Goodrich; and great-grandson, Andrew Sheldrake.

A time to celebrate Lois' life and mourn her passing is planned for noon Saturday, July 26, at Anderson's Tribute Center with a reception to follow. Rev. Rinya Frisbie of Asbury United Methodist Church, Hood River, will officiate. Concluding services will be at the Idlewilde cemetery.

Barbara Starr
Barbara Lucile Starr, a Carson, Wash., resident, died July 17, 2008, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 71 years of age.
Private family services were held at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Barbara was born April 4, 1937, in Fromberg, Mont., to Rex and Lucile (Kraft) Browning. She was raised and educated in Montana, graduating from high school in Great Falls, Mont., in 1955. Following high school, she attended business college in Wenatchee, Wash.
She married
Charles Sabourin in Wenatchee, Wash. They later divorced. She married
James Starr in 1960 and moved to Lyle, Wash., in 1964.
Barbara had worked in several fruit packing houses for more than 30 years, retiring from Diamond Central in Odell, Ore., at age 65. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, music and bird watching.
Two children, Katherine Lynn and James Patrick, and a sister, Leona Hutchison, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sons, Dale Louis Sabourin and his wife, Karen, of Lyle, Wash., William Sabourin, of Lyle, Wash., John Duane Starr and his wife, Toni, of Centerville, Wash., Jerry Lynn Starr, of Salem, Ore., and Joseph Edward Starr and Kenneth Allen Starr, both of Carson, Wash.; and his brother, Loren Earl Browning, and sister-in-law, Pat, of George, Wash.
Ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

James (Jim) Stiffey
James Arthur (Jim) Stiffey, 79, a resident of Mosier, Ore., died June 30, 2008, in Gresham, Ore. Jim was born on Oct. 27, 1928, in Timewell, Ill., to Lawrence and Mabel (Whitaker) Stiffey. He grew up on the family farm where he was born.
Jim joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old, enlisting in 1946. It was in the navy that he began his career as an electrician.
Jim worked both as a construction and maintenance electrician. He spent the last 23 years of his career working as a substation electrician for Bonneville Power. Jim was a proud member of IBEW of which he was a member for 55 years.
Jim and Marlene Denton were married
on Feb. 15, 1958, in Springfield, Ill. They raised two children together and were married
for 43 years, until Marlene's passing in 2001.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marlene, and sister, Pearl Beckett.
He is survived by his son, Loren, and daughter-in-law, Susan, and their sons, Ryan and Sean, of Sandy, Ore., and his daughter, Janet Shuttlesworth, and son-in-law, Kevin, and their sons, Nathan and his wife, Laurie, and Kyle, of Butte, Mont. He is also survived by two nephews, John and Ralph Beckett, and their families; and special friend Priscilla Barrett.
A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church of Mosier on Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. Deposition is by cremation. Interment will be at Willamette National cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Mosier Volunteer Fire Department.
