Brian Catron
Brian Duane Catron passed away March 16, 2008, at his home in Cascade Locks, Ore., with his beloved wife by his side.
A time to mourn his passing and celebrate his life will be 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, at Anderson's Tribute Center with a reception to follow. Pastor Tom Payton of North Bonneville Community Church will officiate.
Brian was born July 5, 1968, in Vancouver, Wash., to Richard and Judith (Hirst) Catron.
He spent most of his childhood in North Bonneville, Wash., and went to school in Stevenson, Washington. Prior to becoming disabled he had worked as a CNA and at various other jobs.
Brian loved music and was an avid guitar player, he enjoyed playing for his family and friends. On June 9, 1990, Brian married
his best friend Renee Dillingham in Stevenson, Wash.
Brian loved spending time with his family. He liked hiking, playing in the snow and swimming.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Catron, his aunt June Carol Catron, his uncle Wallace Catron and his grandfather Wallace Catron.
Brian is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years Renee Catron, of Cascade Locks, Ore; his mother, Judy Catron of Dufur, Ore.; his grandmother, June Catron of Palmer, Alaska; sons, Robby Dillingham of Stevenson, Wash., and Bradley Catron of Cascade Locks; daughter Brianna Catron of Cascade Locks; brothers Mark Catron and his wife, Gina, of North Bonneville, and Wally Catron and companion, Wanita Brown, of Prosser, Wash., and sister Michelle Catron of Dufur; longtime friend Heather Catron of Stabler, Wash., and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Brian was a loving husband, father, son and brother who will be dearly missed.

Dr. Takeo Takano
On March 13, 2008, 'Takeo Takano, 'Dr. T', a long-time physician, passed away peacefully at Mid Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles. He was born Sept. 23, 1913 in Seattle, Wash.
He completed his medical training in Japan and practiced surgery, family medicine and psychiatry in Japan, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Okalahoma.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Akiko, and children Mitzi, William and Robert and their spouses.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kay.
Memorial services have been held at Bateman and Carroll in Gresham, Ore., and his ashes were buried in Oceanside, Calif.
Jewel Roberts Pegg
Jewel Roberts Pegg was welcomed home on April 28, 2008, at the age of 92.
A funeral and reception to celebrate and honor Jewel's life will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at the Hood River Church of Christ, 1512 Tucker Road. Graveside services will follow at Pine Grove Butte cemetery.
Jewel was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Jester, Okla., and moved to Oregon with her family when she was 5 years old. In 1935 Jewel married
Walt Pegg. They were married
for 65 wonderful years.
Jewel packed fruit for many years and worked on the family orchard in Parkdale until she was 75 years old. All while still managing to raise several family members and her own two daughters.
Jewel's greatest joy was spending time with her beloved family. She also found sewing, craft projects, camping, cat fishing, bowling, baking (her famous huckleberry pie) and quilting to be her most enjoyable pastimes. The quilts she so affectionately crafted are a true legacy of love to family and friends.
Jewel also devoted her time in service to the Lord and her Church of Christ family. She lived her life as an example to all who knew her.
Jewel was a very loving, compassionate and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt - you will not find a sweeter lady. Her family will forever cherish her. She will be greatly missed and remembered fondly.
Jewel is survived by her daughters, Sue Willis and her husband, Gary, of Hood River, Ore., and Sherry Muhs and her husband, Butch, of Hermiston, Ore.; daughter-in-law Joyce Millsap, of Sparks, Nev.; eight grandchildren: Ryan Willis and his wife, Joyce; Marcie Zorza and her husband, Kris; Melia Wadkins and her husband, Justin; Aaron Muhs and his wife, Torey; Kathy Carranza and her husband, Fernando; Rick Millsap; Kathleen Schubert and her husband, Chris; and Susan Balikov and her husband, Marty; 15 great-grandchildren: Blake and Grace Willis, Makena and Kyla Jewel Zorza, Emily and Katelyn Wadkins, Noah Muhs, Nickolas Brown, Sara and Rachel Millsap, Danielle, Marissa and Natalie Schubert and Kyra and Jacob Balikov; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Walt Pegg, in 2000; a son, Don Millsap, and all of her brothers and sisters.

Albert Benedict
Albert Verlen Benedict, 74, a former resident of Hood River, Ore., passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at a care facility in The Dalles, Ore. He was born in The Dalles on Nov. 23, 1933, the younger of two children to William and Madge Benedict. He attended school in Dufur and graduated from Dufur High School.
Al married
Doris Engel in Goldendale, Wash., on Dec. 1, 1953. They lived in The Dalles and Hood River with their three children.
He worked in many grocery stores in the Hood River and The Dalles, then left the area and was in property management in Washington and Oregon. Al enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris; his son, Tim, and daughter-in-law, Kim; and his daughter, Jodi Van Metre, and son-in-law, Mark. Al loved his grandchildren, Jessie Godsil and her husband, Christopher, Alisha Mooney and her husband, Brandon, and Allan Van Metre and his wife, Lori; and his great-grandson, Christian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Yvonne Frazier, and son, Terry.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private cremation will be held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
Wilma 'Juanita' Mays
Wilma J. Mays, known to all as Juanita, was born May 16, 1924, in Forsyth, Mo., and passed away on April 2, 2008, in Vancouver, Wash.
She was the youngest of three daughters born to Dee and Rosie Dunn.
Her family left Missouri when she was just a toddler and traveled for several years before finally settling in the Hood River valley where Juanita and her sisters, Lenore and Thelma, finished their schooling.
She met her husband, Owen, when she was 16 and became a World War II bride at the age of 17. She and Owen had a rocky start due to their separation but once the war was over, they created their home in Hood River and raised two daughters, Marilyn and Patricia.
Juanita worked in the fruit industry for more than 25 years and had many friends at the AGA and later the Diamond Fruit Packing Plant.
When not working, Juanita and Owen loved to go fishing and camping, and were avid rock hounds. They spent many happy hours together walking the banks of the Columbia or the sandy Oregon beaches looking for the perfect fishing hole or another agate to add to their collection.
Though Owen passed in 1993, Juanita remained married
to him her entire life and was convinced that one day she would join him on the banks of a river in heaven.
Juanita is survived by her daughters, Marilyn and Patricia, and two grandchildren Zachary and Anna.
The family is bringing her home this coming weekend. A memorial is planned for 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at the Odell United Methodist Church, where Juanita was a member for more than 40 years.

Norma Baker
On Thursday May 1, 2008, Norma Clark Baker passed away peacefully at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles.
Norma was born in Pine Grove, Ore., Dec. 8, 1918, in the home of her grandparents, Belle and William Clark.
She often talked of her wonderful childhood in Pine Grove with all her many cousins and grandparents living nearby.
Norma graduated from Hood River High School in the class of 1937.
In August of the same year she married
her high school sweetheart, Wilbur R. Galligan, at the Pine Grove Church.
Bill Galligan was killed in a mill accident in 1948. They had two children, David and Kathleen.
She is survived by her son, David R. Galligan, and his wife, Barbara; her daughter, Kathleen Galligan Johnson and husband, Chester; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-granddaughters.
She is also survived by one sister, Catherine Ferguson, of The Dalles, Ore.
Her parents and two sisters, Rosemary Petri and Patrica Carr, preceded her in death.
Norma married
Bob Baker in 1958 and they were married
for 40 years. He also preceded her death in 1998. Bob had three children, Sheri, Marta Dee and Craig, whom Norma loved as her own.
Norma worked for First National Bank for 30 years before retiring in 1981. Her wishes were that there would be no funeral service.
Norma was a member of the Christian Science church for more than 60 years.
Her family was her universe and she will be lovingly missed by all.

Betty Rutherford
Betty May Rutherford passed away Jan. 25, 2008, at the Hood River Care Center.
She was born Dec. 10, 1919, at Vallejo, Calif., to Clarence and Florence May (Yates) Leaverton. Betty grew up in California, she moved to Medford, Ore., and then back to San Francisco with her family.
On June 9, 1945, Betty married
Albert 'Al' T. Rutherford in California and to this union was blessed two girls and blended their existing children for a houseful. The family moved to Cascade Locks in 1974 and then to the Hood River Valley in February of 1975. Albert passed away in 1977.
Betty has been active with the Hood River Southern Baptist Church since 1974, both as a parishioner and their bookkeeper. She had a strong faith and love of her Lord and Savior.
Betty is survived and will be dearly missed by six children: Alice Marie Stubblefield, of Hood River, Ore., Florence Catherine Grindheim, of Davis, Calif., Judith Ann Liles, of Sparks, Nev., Thomas Rutherford, of Kent, Wash., William Rutherford, of Towalame, Calif., and Larry Grindheim, of Stockton, Calif.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, other family and many friends.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Tom Grindheim, who died as an infant, and Albert Thomas Rutherford, in 1999.
A time to mourn her passing and celebrate her life is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Tucker Road Baptist Church of Hood River. Pastor Joe Gonzalez will officiate.

Larry F. Copley
Larry F. Copley, age 65, passed away May 1, 2008, at his Hood River, Ore., residence, after a long battle with a rare blood disorder.
Larry was born Aug. 10, 1942, in Van Nuys, Calif., to Fay and Neva (Walston) Copley. He was raised and educated in Colorado, graduating from high school in 1960.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1967 and was stationed in Germany. He worked in the Climax Mine in Leadville, Colo., and later followed his passion for flying working as a flight instructor/charter pilot in Aspen, Colo., where he met his future wife, Barbara, from Oregon. They married
in Aspen in 1969 and moved to Hood River in 1973.
Larry served as a deputy sheriff in Hood River until 1978 when he went to work as a Teamster Business Agent for Local 670 in Hood River.
Larry also served on the State Board of Apprenticeship and Training. In 1991 he took a job with Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration and retired in 1997.
Larry was a past member of the Alpinees and climbed both Mount Hood and Mount Adams. He was a 33-year member of the Hood River Elks Lodge and was voted volunteer of the year for 2006-07.
Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Hood River; his mother, Neva, and brother, Gary, of Delta, Colo.; his brother, Keith, and sister-in-law, Char, of Larkspur, Colo.; his brother-in-law, Henry Hewitt, and his wife Sharon, of Portland, Ore.; nephew, Adam, and nieces Laura and Brooke.
Honoring his wishes, there will be no service. His winning smile will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
