Carol Schlitzkus

Carol L. Schlitzkus, 75, of Little Whale Cove in Depoe Bay died Feb. 10, 2003 in Newport.
She was born Sept. 12, 1927 in Alhambra, Calif., to Martha (Gerard) and Leo Wilkins.
She was raised and educated in Highland Park, Calif.
She married Ralph Schlitzkus on July 8, 1945 in Highland Park, Calif.
They lived in several towns in California, and resided in Madera, Calif. from 1962 to 1975. They moved to Seal Rock from Nevada in 1991, and made their home at Little Whale Cove for the past three years.
She enjoyed computers, slot machines at the casinos, gardening, walking on the beach, painting, and crafts.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph; a son, Ron Schlitzkus of Salem; two daughters, Bonnie Sisco of Fresno, Calif. and Coral Parkey of Pacifica, Calif.; two sisters, Josie Alleman of Irvine, Calif. and Dorothy Jarobe of Haverhill, Mass.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
No formal memorial service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of Bateman Funeral Home, 915 NE Yaquina Heights Drive, Newport, Ore. 97365. Disposition is by cremation.

Mary Mashek

Mary Ethel Mashek, 92, of Longview, Wash., formerly of Waldport, died April 14, 2003.
She was born March 21, 1911 in Ceresco, Neb. to Marietta (Ethels) and Martin Scanlon.
She was raised on a farm in Ceresco, Neb.
She married John Mashek on Feb. 9, 1933 in Omaha, Neb. They moved to Portland in 1936.
In 1945, they moved to Waldport, where she lived until her husband's death in 1995.
As a young woman, she had worked as a waitress at Middlekoff Restaurant and City Café.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Catholic Church.
She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, and brush clearing; farm animals; her cats; and listening to Paul Harvey on the radio.
Survivors include four daughters, Peggy Wallace of Rainier, Dorothy Gillhoover of Keizer, Patricia Frick of Sandy, and Christina Cherrington of Castle Rock, Wash.; a sister, Ellen Lott of Newport; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John; seven siblings; and two sons-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Friday) at Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home in Kelso, Wash. Her grandson-in-law, Bishop Scott Anderson, will officiate. Entombment will be at Chelan Abbey Mausoleum in Newport. The family suggests contributions be made to Tony Cherrington Memorial Fund in care of Cowlitz Bank, Castle Rock, Wash.; or to Hospice Care Center, PO Box 2067, Longview, Wash. 98632. Hubbard Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Ellen Gerig

Ellen Gerig, 81, of Lincoln City died Nov. 7, 2003, of age-related causes.
She was born April 25, 1922, in Salem to Anna F. (Steward) and Charles A. Dowd.
She received a degree from Multnomah School of the Bible in 1948.
She worked for the "Mid-Morning Meditations" radio program for many years. She also worked as a secretary to Ezra Gerig in Portland.
She married Vernon Gerig on Dec. 6, 1958, in Portland.
She worked in Toledo for the Lincoln County School District, and retired in the early 1980s due to health reasons. She managed the Glen Moor Lodge, where she worked until 2002.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lincoln City.
She enjoyed sewing.
Survivors include two sons, David L. Gerig of Napa, Calif., and Vernon R. Gerig of Brinsmade, N.D.; a brother, the Rev. John Dowd of Fort Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, in 1975.
A memorial service was held Nov. 11 at First Baptist Church, Lincoln City. Inurnment will be at Portland Memorial Columbarium, Portland. Pacific View Memorial Chapel of Lincoln City is handling the arrangements.

Lawrence "Bonnie" Bonnicksen

Lawrence "Bonnie" Edliff Bonnicksen, 83, of Newport died at his home Dec. 20, 2003, of injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Camino, Calif., to Nettie Evelyn (Walker) and Carl Christian Bonnicksen.
He was a registered Native Washoe Indian, and spoke the Washoe language and knew its alphabet.
He enjoyed playing baseball as a youth, and graduated from the Sherman Institute, a private Native American school in Riverside, Calif., where he was class president. During this time, he spent summers at Lake Tahoe, Nev., on the Washoe Indian Reservation, where he fished with handcrafted fishing poles, caught small game with handmade traps, and caught rattlesnakes with a long pole, and used the rabbit and snake hides to make gloves. He also gathered roots and berries, and ground flour from gathered acorns and pinenuts.
He attended medical school at the University of California at Berkley, where he was a member of the baseball and golf teams.
He was drafted in May 1943, and served in the U.S. Army for four years, including service at U.S. Army Headquarters in London, England, where he was a member of the U.S. Army's baseball team and met his future wife. He left the service as staff sergeant.
Following the war, he moved to Okanogan, Wash., where he worked as an accountant for the Okanogan Creamery Co. (later Okanogan Meadowmoor Dairy).
He married his wife, Phillis, on Nov. 19, 1945, in Okanogan.
He was a member of the bowling league in Okanogan, and received several bowling trophies and serving as bowling association secretary.
He retired in 1982, and moved with his wife to Newport.
He and his wife were certified dancers and teachers of Old Time English Ballroom Dancing, and participated in square dancing.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and of the Union 50 Club in Lincoln City.
He enjoyed gardening, bowling, playing bingo and card games, camping, and beachcombing.
Survivors include a stepson, Brian Bonnicksen of Wenatchee, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Rita Cockbill of Swindon-Wilts, England, and Della Bonnicksen of Wenatchee, Wash.; three grandchildren, Pamela Ann Barcott of Everett, Wash., Michael Brian Bonnicksen of East Wenatchee, Wash., and Christina Marie Bonnicksen of Wenatchee, Wash.; and a great-grandchild, Robert Barcott of Everett, Wash. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Phillis, in October 1998; and a brother, Adolph Bonnicksen of Twisp, Wash.
His ashes were scattered along Beverly Beach, joining those of his wife. Bateman Funeral Home of Newport handled the arrangements.

John Wilson

John A. Wilson, 101, of Dublin, Ohio, died of age-related causes on May 12, 2000.
He was born in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on March 13, 1899 to Robert Foster and Laura Hoaglund Wilson.
After graduating from high school in 1917, he worked in the lumber industry in Idaho and Washington, then moved to Toledo in the mid-1920s to take a position with the former C.D. Johnson Lumber Company, where he became head sawyer in the mill.
He and his wife, Lila, were married in 1930.
He became a Mason in 1931, was a life-long member, and obtained his Oregon 50-year pin. He was also a member of the Masquers, an amateur theatrical group, and an officer on the former Toledo Water Board for many years.
In 1949, the family moved to Springfield, where he became head sawyer at the newly opened Weyerhaeuser Timber Company sawmill. He worked at that mill until his retirement in 1965.
After retirement, he and his wife were active in the Eugene Chapter of Amaranth. They moved to Dublin, Ohio in 1985.
Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Johanna DeStefano of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Elva Ojalla of Siletz; and a niece, Charlene Ojalla Reetz of Anchorage, Alaska.
A private graveside service will be held for the family.
