Hilia Nelson
Hilia G. Nelson, a Hood River resident, died Dec. 11, 2004, at Rosetta Assisted Living in Hood River. She was 90 years of age. Private committal services will be held.
She was born June 7, 1914, in Fitzwilliam, N.H. Her maiden name was Grier.
On Aug. 6, 1937, she and Frederick J. Nelson were married
in Troy, N.H. They remained married
until his death on July 24, 1977, at Hood River, at the age of 66.
The Nelsons had no children. Hilia is survived by her nephew, Gordon Kelley and his wife, Betty, both of Hancock, Maine, and their son, Kevin Kelley and daughter Yvonne Kelley.
She is also survived by her niece Hilma Davis of Essex Junction, Vt., and Fayetteville, Ga. Hilia lived for many years after the death of her husband in an apartment near Pacific Avenue in Hood River where she was assisted by her good friend, neighbor and caregiver, Geradeane Vowels and her daughter, Terry Monovan.

Hazle Beavers
Hazle Cleta Beavers died on Dec. 10, 2004, in Yakima, Wash.
Hazle was born on April 9, 1915, in Blanchard, Okla., one of nine children born to Grover C. and Margaret Launa (Mitchell) Beavers.
Following high school graduation Hazle began her career in telecommunications, an industry from which she retired in 1972. At age 18 she joined the Northwestern Telephone Company in Chattanooga, Okla., as an operator on a switchboard set up in the living room of a private residence.
In the fall if 1935 she met and later married
Preston D. Brown. They eventually made their way to Birmingham, Ala., for his employment with DuPont, the company that was the first prime contractor for the atomic energy project at Hanford, Wash.
She resumeded her career in the telephone industry for the Oregon-Washington Telephone Company in Grandview, Wash., as an operator on a line switchboard located in a small room of the Grandview Herald building. She transferred to the Sunnyside office when the company upgraded to pushbutton switchboards. After several years as an operator she returned to Grandview as the manager of the business office.
In 1966 Hazle married
Carl Sutherland and they moved to Hood River, where she remained with the company, then United Telephone Company, now Sprint, until her retirement in 1972.
Hazle loved plants and flowers and her retirement years were spent tending to many, both inside and outside the home. She adopted painting as a hobby and progressed with it until a loss of eyesight.
Hazle was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters and her two husbands. Two brothers survive her: G.C. Beavers and Cleo Beavers and their families, all of Texas and Oklahoma, and her sons Preston Brown and his wife, Sharon, and Phil Brown and his wife, Linda, all of Yakima, and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were Dec. 17 in Yakima, courtesy of Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
Velma Mays
Velma Lee 'Tootie' Mays, age 79, died Dec. 12, 2004, at her residence.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. A reception will follow. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 15, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.

Stanley 'Doc' Wells
Stanley E. 'Doc' Wells, a longtime Hood River resident, died Dec. 2, 2004, at his home at Hawks Ridge. He was 98 years of age. Services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. A dinner reception will follow.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Doc was born Aug. 4, 1906, in Ackworth, Iowa, to Chester and Mary (Harmon) Wells. He grew up on the family farm in Afton, Iowa, and graduated from Afton High School.
He attended medical school at the University of Iowa and then came to Oregon to complete his medical training and residency at the University of Oregon Medical School in Portland.
His first practice was at Bonneville, in 1932, during the time the dam was being built. He returned to Iowa for a couple of years and then came back to Oregon with his wife, Ruth, in 1937 and set up practice in Hood River. At the 50-year mark of Doc's practice, he retired to hunting, fishing and community service.
He was proud to be a lifetime member of the Pacific Northwest Water Association; the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Foundation; the American Medical Association for 50 years; member of the Elks Club for 22 years; President, Port of Hood River for 10 years; Hood River County Board of Commissioners; the Sheriff's Association; Hood River School Board Member; Republican Central Committee; Columbia Gorge United; honorary member of the Oregon State Police Association and a 67-year member of Rotary International of Hood River where he was the only member to serve as president twice. He was also a member of Riverside Community Church and the Masonic Lodge.
Doc was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 1955 and siblings Wallace, Edith and Ella Wells.
He is survived by his sons, Ed Wells of Portland, Ore., and Gene Wells of Hood River; niece Dorothy Henkle of White Salmon, Wash., and her stepson Ron Henkle of Portland; niece and nephew Charles and Virginia Fulkerson of Seattle, Wash., and several cousins in Iowa and Nebraska.
Private interment will be at Idlewild cemetery.

Bobby Oden
Long Beach, Wash., resident Bobby Lee Oden died Nov. 23, 2004, of natural causes. He was 58 years old.
Oden was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., on July 13, 1946, to William and Rossia (Watts) Oden. When he was 5 or 6 years old, he moved with his family to Hood River, Ore. He attended school in Hood River and at the age of 17 enlisted in the Navy, serving in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1966 and then served three years in the Naval Reserve.
After receiving his military discharge he returned to Hood River and for a short time was employed by Diamond Fruit Company. He became a trucker and worked for commercial auto carriers Convoy, Ryder and then Allied Carriers for the next 28 years.
In 1972 he married
Kathryn Upson and they made their home in Stevenson, Wash. The couple became parents of a son and a daughter. They later divorced. In 2003 he moved to Long Beach to be near the ocean.
Oden was a very hardworking man who loved his family. He had a passion for fishing, loved the ocean and enjoyed old movies.
Survivors include his daughter, Michelle Norvald of Portland, Ore.; son, Matthew Oden of Middletown, N.J.; sister, Bunnie Rene of The Dalles, Ore.; one grandchild; a niece and a nephew.
No public service is scheduled. Cremation arrangements are by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach, Wash.
Kathryn Oxborrow
Kathryn Oxborrow died on Nov. 29, 2004, at her home in Bend, Ore.
She was born on May 29, 1911, in Portland, Ore., to Joseph and Clara (Wilson) Lybarger.
Kathryn and her husband, Gerard W. Oxborrow, were married
in Hood River, Ore., on Aug. 13, 1935. They lived in Hood River until moving to Crescent, Ore., in 1951. They moved to Bend in 1986.
She was a member of Crescent Community Club and the Gilchrist Garden Club. She enjoyed gardening, collecting turtles and traveling.
Kathryn is survived by her sons, Michael Oxborrow and his wife, Judy, in Milwaukie, Ore., and Steven Oxborrow of Bend. She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters, and a brother.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. on Dec. 17, 2004, at Idlewild cemetery in Hood River.

Mildred Fullington
Milded E. Fullington, age 91, died Dec. 3, 2004, at Hood River Care Center.

Margaret T. Cameron, age 97, died Dec. 6, 2004, at the Hood River Care Center.

Jack Rush
Jack Donald 'Don' Rush, a longtime Odell, Ore., resident died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at his home after a long bout with emphysema. He was 79 years of age.
Private family services will be held on Saturday, February 19, at Idlewild cemetery.
Don was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Taft, Calif., to Abe and Della Rush. He moved with his family to Odell at the age of twelve. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy in the Aleutian Islands.
In 1944, he and Marjorie Martin were married
in Orange County, Calif. Don was co-owner of G&R Trucking until retirement. After retirement he enjoyed restoring cars as a hobby.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son.
Surviving him are his wife of 60 years, Marjorie, and daughter, Suzanne and her husband, Roger. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Donald and his wife, Renee, Justin and his, wife Leslie, and Chandra Morgan; and eight great-grandchildren.

Harold Lucas
Harold Leroy Lucas, 76, of Hood River, passed away in his sleep on Feb. 9, 2005, at the home of his younger brother and sister-in-law, Mel and Pat Lucas.
He was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Miltona, Minn., the oldest of eight boys, to Paul and Mabel (Irwin) Lucas. The family moved from Minnesota to Hood River in 1940, where he completed his education. After high school, Harold worked as a logger in Montana.
In 1960, while there, he met Margaret Brown and they later married
in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They later made their home in Hood River, where Harold continued to work as a logger for Gehrig's Logging. He later worked for the county of Hood River, until March of 1969 when he was injured in an industrial accident, which led to an early retirement. This enabled him to stay home and help raise his two children, Shannon Marie and Jody Steele Lucas, and in 1986 a grandson, Justin Steele Lucas, whom he also raised.
Harold was a 40-year member of Local Eagles Club 2150, for which he was a past State President, and he was an active member up until his death. Harold loved to fish and hunt and he enjoyed gardening, especially his roses and gladioluses. He also enjoyed camping with his children and their many friends, whom he also considered his children. Harold was well known for his Saturday nights spent watching Portland Wrestling and eating jojo's with nacho cheese.
He is survived by his daughter, Shannon, of Silverdale, Wash; his son, Jody of Longmont, Colo.; his grandson, Justin of Hood River; many nieces and nephews; and several adopted 'daughters.' He is also survived by three sons from a previous marriage. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; brothers Don, Dean, Wayne, and Carroll; and his parents.
Memorial services were held at the Eagles Club in Hood River on Friday, Feb. 11. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
Iven Hawkins
Iven Hawkins, 76, passed away from complications due to lymphoma in Portland, Ore., on Feb. 15, 2005.
He was born Andrew Iven Hawkins, Jr., on June 1, 1928, the son of Andrew Iven and Blanche Irene (Thomas) Hawkins. Iven was born and raised in the community of Enterprise, Wash., near Tonasket.
In February of 1946, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving until his honorable discharge in December of 1947. In 1951 Iven married
Doris Reeder and the couple had two children, Cheryl and Gloria. The family moved to White Salmon in 1960, where Iven went to work for Underwood Fruit as a shipping and receiving foreman.
On June 2, 1974, Iven married
Janice Schilling and the couple had a son, Andy, in 1980. Iven began working for Stadelman fruit in 1982. Shortly later he drove log truck for Mountain Logging, then a fuel delivery truck for Guler Oil. At the age of 68, Iven decided to try retirement. He was soon bored and went back to work, this time for Bingen Garbage Service driving a roll off truck. Iven worked until last summer, when his health forced him to retire for good.
Iven was a lifetime member of BPOE 1868 and also of the American Legion. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and especially camping. Iven had a green thumb and his gardening skills kept many people supplied with fresh vegetables.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, at home in Bingen; son, Andy Hawkins of San Mateo, Calif., sisters Ellen Scott of Tacoma, Wash., Dorothy Tyson of Spokane, Wash., brother Robert Hawkins of Trail, British Columbia, three granddaughters, Cameo, Suni and Shelicca Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, sisters Wilma and Reta, and daughrers Cheryl Hawkins and Gloria Hawkins.
A memorial service for Iven Hawkins will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at BPOE (White Salmon Elks Lodge). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Gorge, P.O. Box 36, Hood River, OR, 97031 or to Ladies of the Elks (L.O.E.), P.O. Box 647, White Salmon, WA 98672. Gardner Funeral Home handled arrangements.
