Leo Lesselyoung
Parkdale resident Leo Lesselyoung died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. He was 78 years of age.
A funeral will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. Interment will be at Parkdale cemetery. Arrangements are by Anderson's Tribute Center 541-386-1000.
Melvin Haugen
Hood River resident Melvin Haugen died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Brookside Manor. He was 80 years old.
A memorial service will be held in Fairview, Ore., at Quail Hollow Mobile Home Park in the Recreation Center on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m.
Melvin was born March 29, 1924, in Appam, N.D., to Iver and Christine (Rueningan) Haugen. He grew up and attended schools in Williston, N.D.
Following his education he joined the United States Navy and served three-and-a-half years during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the military he worked in Montana and North Dakota, logging and farming.
In 1953 Melvin moved to Portland, Ore., where he worked for the Portland School District in their maintenance department for 20 years. He retired in 1986 and moved to Dee, Ore.
He was an avid fisherman, played the trumpet, collected black powder firearms and was a charter member of the NRA.
Melvin is survived by his sister Irene Ralston of Parkdale, Ore., nephews Harvey Thorstad of Fairview, and Arthur Thorstad of Fox Island, Wash., and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Lola Ann Moore
Lola Ann Moore, 70, a resident of Tygh Valley, died at her home on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004.
She was born March 6, 1934, in Compton, Calif., the third of six children to Gustave Herman and Gladys Aileen (Muma) Maurer. She moved to Parkdale, Ore., at a young age where she attended schools.
Lola married
Thomas Oral Moore on June 24, 1951, in Parkdale. In 1953, they moved to Tygh Valley where they currently reside. She was a homemaker and worked part time at the White River Store in Tygh Valley.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Wamic Lady's Legion Auxiliaries and the Tygh Valley PTA. She loved spending time with the family, especially the grandchildren and enjoyed crossword puzzles, traveling, gardening, yard work and life in general.
Lola is survived by her husband, Tom, Tygh Valley; two sons, Timothy Lee Moore, Ontario, Ore., and Kenneth Oral and his wife, Tami Moore, Tygh Valley; two daughters, Linda Ann and her husband, Gene Peterson, Lafarge, Wisc. and Teresa and her husband, Phil Dibartolo, Tygh Valley; two sisters, Sunday and her husband, Michael Lease, Vancouver, Wash., and Janice Walters, Forest Grove, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and her caretaker, Sandy Tubbs.
She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Theodore Moore in February 1996, her two brothers, Sonny and Billy Maurer in January 1973 and her sister, Violet Norval in November 2001.
Viewing visitation will be held at Tygh Valley Methodist Church from 1 p.m. to the beginning of funeral services.
Funeral services will be held at the Tygh Valley Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, with Pastor Jerry Holland officiating. Interment will follow at Tygh Valley cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.

Elizabeth White
Mt. Hood community resident Elizabeth Elaine White died Oct. 12, 2004, at the age of 84.
A graveside service will be held Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. at the Parkdale cemetery. A reception will follow at the Parkdale Community Church.
A visitation will be held Oct. 21, at Anderson's Tribute Center from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Elaine was born April 4, 1920, in Kimball, Kan., to Roy and Bessie (Cosner) Tweedy. In 1936 she and her family moved from Kansas to Oregon. Elaine and her brother Charles rode all the way in the rumble seat of their parents Hupmobile.
She graduated from Parkdale High School in 1938. During World War II, she served in the Woman's Army Auxiliary Corps. She married
George White in 1946.
Elaine was active in the Parkdale Community Church since the 1950s and sang in the church choir until her death. She also sang in the Hood River Sweet Adelines Choir and once sang in the Billy Graham Choir. She was a farm girl at heart and enjoyed tending to her garden and fruit trees.
Elaine is survived by her sons Mark White of Mt. Hood, and Chuck White of Beaverton, and by her grandchildren Melissa, Justin and Laura White.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, George White.

Ilene Miller
Ilene Blanche Miller, a Gresham resident, died Oct. 10, 2004, at the age of 83.
Ilene Blanche Nelson was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Bird Island, Minn. She married
Elmer (Tug) Miller in 1966.
She has lived in Portland, Mosier, and Hood River, and worked as a restaurant hostess. She enjoyed knitting for her grandchildren.
Ilene is survived by her husband, Elmer 'Tug'; sons Gerald 'Jerry' Baker and Duane Graven; stepdaughters Bonnie Friesen and Betty Warner; sisters Elinor Decker and Alice Perry; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at Finley Sunset Hills in Portland.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are being made by Finley Sunset Hills, 503-292-6654.
J.B. Vanover, Sr.
J.B. Vanover, Sr., an Odell, Ore., resident, died Oct. 22, 2004, at his residence. He was 78 years of age.
Services will be held on Monday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
J. B. was born April 12, 1926, in Eucha, Okla., to Floyd and Gertrude (Phillips) Vanover. He was raised and educated in Oklahoma and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war he came to Hood River, where he and Joan Vann were married
. He worked in local orchards for awhile and then at the Neal Creek Mill for eighteen years and then at the Hanel Mill for ten years. He retired in 1991. On Sept. 5, 1964, he and Bertie Knutson were married
. J.B. was a member of the Eagles Lodge and enjoyed watching Baseball and gardening.
He is survived by his daughters, Diane Johnson of Parkdale; Laurie Vanover of Odell; Stacey Vanover of Goldendale, Wash.; Patricia Parks of Lebanon, Ore.; sons Rick Vanover of Gresham, Ore.; Ron Vanover of Yakima, Wash., and David Vanover of Tacoma, Wash.; Stepsons Larry, Steven and Gilbert Struck, stepdaughters Susan Barker of The Dalles and Debbie Sexton of Arizona; brothers Gene, Russell, Hank and Sammy Vanover. Twenty-three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two-step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bertie and son J.B. Vanover, Jr. Interment will be at Pine Grove cemetery.

Rebekah Jewel Webster
Rebekah was born Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore.
She passed away on Thursday, Oct. 28, at the hospital.
She was the daughter of Addison and NeCole (Rowan) Webster of Hood River. In addition to her parents Rebekah is survived by her siblings, Brigham, McKenna, Rush, Sydney and Hyrum.
Graveside Services will be held on Monday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at Pine Grove cemetery. Services were entrusted to Anderson's Tribute Center, 386-1000.
Sharon Carter
Cascade Locks resident Shari Sue Carter passed away Oct. 23, 2004, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was 57 years old.
A Memorial Service was held Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Cascade Locks Community Church.
Shari was born July 9, 1947, in Anaheim, Calif. In 1980 she ventured to Bend, Ore., and lived there for five years. She moved to Lincoln City, Ore., in 1985 and met her future husband in 1992. Shari and John were married
in 1994 and settled in Cascade Locks.
She had great joy the last three years of her life, enjoying time spent with her grandchildren. She also spent time tending to her beloved garden. Shari loved birds, especially hummingbirds, and had many feeders in her yard. Shari was active in the community with the food bank. She loved helping people. She kept busy playing cards, reading, dice, camping, hiking and fishing. Waterfalls were her favorite, as John and her explored many of the falls in their area.
Shari is survived by her husband, John Carter, of Cascade Locks; children Gypsie Deana, James Allen Morford, David and Dan Vrana (twins), Robert and David Buzick, Dixie, Misty and Cody Hamilton, grandchildren Jordan David Royce, Elizabeth Marie Hamilton, Jillyann Jade Daniels, Aaron Michael Vrana, Nicholas Ryan, Joshua Daniel and Matthew James.

Lavern Holland
Parkdale resident Lavern 'Shorty' Holland died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the Hood River Care Center. He was 86.
A graveside service was held Friday, Oct. 29, at Pine Grove cemetery.
Shorty was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Leola, Ark., to Clarence and Mary Holland. He was raised and educated in Arkansas. In the 1960s he and his wife Billie moved their family to Parkdale.
Shorty lived in Parkdale until he was forced to move to Lyle, Wash., after suffering a stroke. He lived at A&G Foster Care for the last seven years, where he received great care and love. Along with him in the move went his best buddy 'Dog, ' his pet.
Shorty loved animals of all kinds. He had many on his farm in Parkdale and also had a beautiful large garden.
Mr. Holland is survived by his sons: Jerry Holland of Dufur, Ore., Lloyd Holland of Hood River, Ore., and Michael Holland of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter Janice Clark of Underwood, Wash.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Christi, Sharon, Paula, Jerry, Jr., Chadwick and Nicholas, and eight great-grandchildren.

Jose Quevedo-Guzman
Jose Luis Quevedo-Guzman, of Purandiro, Michoacan, Mexico, died Oct. 24, 2004, in Rancho, Las Ranas, Mexico, at the age of 50.
Jose was born Nov. 27, 1953, in Purandiro, Michoacan, Mexico, to Candelaria Guzman and Benjamin Quevedo. He was a seasonal farm worker, who always followed the crops in California and Oregon.
Jose is survived by his parents; sons Jose Luis Quevedo-Millan of Hood River and Frank Rene Quevedo-Millan of Troutdale; daughter Melissa Quevedo Robles of Hood River; granddaughters Brenda Quevedo and Alexia Quevedo; grandson Anthony A. Robles; and four brothers and two sisters in Mexico.
Funeral services were held Oct. 25 in Rancho Las Ranas, Purandiro, Michoacan, Mexico.
