James Hamer
James (Jim) Hamer died Sept. 15, 2004. He was 81 years of age. Jim was born Feb. 27, 1923. He graduated from Halsey High school in 1941, attended Oregon State University in Corvallis for four terms, 1941-42, and fall term of 1946 in forestry.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from December 1942 through January 1946. He married
Joy Anne Bigler on Jan. 26, 1946, and was widowed on Feb. 21, 1976; he had two other marriages, to Brandy and Wilma.
He became a member of the Oregon State Police in 1947, and was one of OSP's first motorcycle officers.
He took leave in late 1950, for recall to the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He returned to OSP in 1952 at Salem. In July 1960 he was promoted to Corporal and assigned to Albany patrol station. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1969, and to 2nd Lt. Commander in 1971 until his retirement in late 1977.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, 32 Degree, Salem, Ore.; Scottish Rite Lodge, Salem; Al Kader Temple, Portland; Order of Demolay Chemeketa Chapter and Takena Chapter, Linn County Shrine Club, Albany; Albany Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club of Albany, Optimist Club of Albany; Albany Woodpeckers; Linn County Veterans Council; Oregon State Sheriff's Association; and the Elk's Lodge. Jim won numerous service awards from the community.
Jim loved people, he liked helping them in any way possible. He loved visiting with many friends, doing his club activities, fishing, and camping, traveling, spending time with his family, and laughter.
Survivors include son James R. Hamer of Hood River; daughter Linda Sieckmann of Gladstone, Ore.; sister Sue Gleason of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren Jamey Hamer, Nicki and Kyle Sieckmann; great-grandchildren Kylee and Abigayle; nieces and nephews Joann, David, Steven, Patty, Kimberly, and Michael.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, 330 5th Ave. S.W., Albany, where he was a member, and internment will follow at Belcrest Memorial Park, 1295 Browning Ave S., Salem.

Ruth Gangwer
Ruth Margaret Gangwer, 91, a resident of The Dalles, died on Sept. 10, 2004, at a local care facility.
She was born on Nov. 13, 1912, the youngest of six children to William and Ida Lehr in Mulberry, In., where she was raised, and married
Everett Gangwer on Oct. 29, 1929. The couple lived in Indiana, Iowa, Washington and Oregon.
Ruth and Everett settled in the Pine Grove area of Hood River county in 1941 where they operated a dairy farm. After the family was raised Ruth went to work packing fruit and as a cook at the Middle School in Odell. In 1983 Ruth retired and they moved to The Dalles to be near family.
She was a member of The Dalles Evangelical Church and enjoyed her family, friends, reading, flower gardening and ceramics.
Ruth is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Jack and Norma Gangwer of Arlington, Wash., Gene and Beverly Gangwer of Rossville, Ind., David and Lois Gangwer of McCall, Idaho, Betsy Johnson and Jerry Tanquist of The Dalles, Fredrick and Betty Gangwer of The Dalles, Linda and Arlen Walters of Camas, Wash., and Karen and Harvey Harrington of Baker City; 26 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in April 1999, her sisters and brothers, a son-in-law, Kenneth Johnson, and two great-granddaughters.
Private graveside services were held at Three Mile IOOF cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at The Dalles Evangelical Church with Rev. Douglas Marquardt officiating.

Grace Anders
Grace Marie Jackson Anders, daughter and granddaughter of early Hood River settlers, died in Beaverton on Sept. 13, 2004. She was born in White Salmon, Wash., on Oct. 1, 1916, to the Rev. Roy and Lulu Thomas Jackson. Her grandparents were Capt. F.M. and Elizabeth Thurmond Jackson and Mark and Martha Wells Thomas.
Grace graduated from Hood River High School in 1934. She received her bachelors degree from Willamette University and masters degree in social work from Portland State University.
After working as a Field Director for the American Red Cross, Grace resided many years in Salem where she was a social worker until retirement. She was active in the Alumni Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega, The American Association of University Women and First United Methodist Church. She was also active in China Friendship, leading two group tours to China under its auspices.
She had a lifelong interest in the protection of the environment. She participated in the Nature Conservancy until her failing eyesight and health prevented her.
Grace is survived by her daughter, Susan Harrell, of Lake Oswego, Ore.; sister, Betty Foxley, Hood River; grandsons and their spouses: Bryan Harrell, Salem; Matthew and Kim Chi Harrell, Beaverton, Ore.; Christopher and Heather Harrell, Tigard, Ore.; Jonathan and Kirsten Harrell, Portland, Ore.; great-grandchildren: Skyler, Brandon and Anders; and one niece, Gina Foxley of Costa Mesa, Calif. Robin Harrell, wife of Bryan, preceded her in death.

Gertrude Seibel
Gertrude VanMetre Seibel, age 94, died Sept. 21, 2004, in Gresham, Ore. Arrangements are pending at Anderson's Tribute Center, 386-1000.
Hilda Wetherell
Hilda Wetherell, a Parkdale resident, died Sept. 25, 2004, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 78 years of age.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the Upper Valley cemetery in Parkdale.
Hilda was born in Oklahoma on Feb. 6, 1926, to Duel and Grace Cannon. She was raised and educated in Oklahoma and married
Roy Wetherell on Dec. 4, 1949, in Stevenson, Wash. In her early years, she worked at local packing houses. She enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, growing flowers and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1983.
She is survived by her sons, Steve and Lonnie Wetherell, both of Parkdale, and sister Fama Murphy and brother Bill Cannon, both of Hood River. Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.

Iona 'Ruth' Clack
Hood River resident Ruth Clack died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was 77 years of age. A funeral service will be Sept. 30, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Hood River.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Vault interment will be at Parkdale cemetery.
Ruth was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Oakley, Idaho, to Orson H. and Iona P. (Martindale) Lee. She attended schools in Oakley and Burley, Idaho. In the early 1940s Ruth moved with her family to Los Angeles, Calif., where her father worked for Douglas Aircraft Company.
In 1946 Ruth married
Robert L. Clack in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Soon after their marriage they moved to Southern California where her husband pursued work in Western movies and entertainment.
Ruth and her husband then moved to Morgan Hill, Calif., where they owned and operated Clack Auto Sales. Together they moved their family to Parkdale, Ore., in 1965, where she has lived ever since.
Ruth worked for Diamond Fruit as a sorter and in the box room. She was a member of the Hood River LDS church and enjoyed community events with the Parkdale Grange.
She was known for making toys for her relatives and children. Ruth loved all crafts and games.
She is survived by her son, Robert A. Clack, and his wife, Hazel, of Portland, Ore., daughter Kathleen Clack of Washington, brother Orson H. Lee, Jr. of Boise, Idaho, sisters Shirley Lee Blackledge and her husband, Dale, of Tri Cities, Wash., and Sharon Ann Lee Wells and her husband, Gary, of Shelly, Idaho, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Clack in 1986.

Lorene Sylvester

Virgil Loomis
Virgil LeRoy Loomis, an Odell resident, died Sept. 23, 2004, at the Hood River Care Center. He was 75 years of age. An informal gathering to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Parkdale Community Center.

Gertrude Siebel
Gertrude Van Metre Seibel, age 94, died Sept. 21, 2004, in Gresham, Ore. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. at the I.O.O.F. cemetery in The Dalles. Lester Bausch
Lester Conrad Bausch died on Sept. 29, 2004, in Clackamas, Ore., at the age of 92, from complications from a stroke.
Lester was born in Atkinson, Neb., on Sept. 6, 1912, to Steven and Molly Bausch. He attended Creighton University for two years, then moved to Seattle and then Portland where he worked for Mannings for 25 years.
He left Mannings in 1963 and bought the Charburger Restaurant in Cascade Locks, later opening another with his son, Steve, in Hood River in 1967.
He retired in 1994; his son, Dan, continues with the Charburger in Cascade Locks.
Les was active in Cascade Locks community, and served as a Cascade Locks Port Commissioner and was a member of the Columbia Gorge Lions.
He enjoyed traveling, RVing and gardening. He and his wife, Pearl, were active in the Travelite Travel Club, and Trinity Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl, of Clackamas; sons Steven of Hood River, Daniel of Gresham, and Mark of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a daughter, Susan Morales, of Keizer, Ore. He is also survived by his sister, Claire Echart, of Atkinson, Neb., nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Gresham, Ore.
Visitation was Oct. 3-4 at Lincoln Memorial Park, and a service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church. Committal was at Skyline Memorial Park, Portland, OR.
Charles duChalard
Ralph Phillip 'Charles' duChalard died Sept. 30, 2004, at his home in Mt. Hood, Ore. He was 60 years of age.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Charles was born July 26, 1944, in England. He served two years in the U.S. Navy.
Throughout his life he traveled many places and held various jobs. While in Hood River he worked for Diamond Fruit Company. He was known for his woodworking abilities, especially his beautiful handmade cribs/cradles. Some of his other interests included reading and juggling. Charles was involved with the Baha'i community and religion.
Mr. duChalard is survived by his son Marc duChalard of Mt. Hood, Ore., daughter Lori Gay of Hood River, son Ben duChalard of Beaverton, Ore., step daughters Casey Conway of Beaverton, and Jessica Velasquez of Odell, Ore.
Also surviving are grandchildren Nickayla Benway, Sasha Gay, Angel Velasquez and Austin and Rhea Conway. He is also survived by his two sisters Suzanne and Simone. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Carrol.

Joe Lawson
Longtime Hood River resident Joe Raymond Lawson died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Providence Portland Medical Center. He was 64.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Anderson's Tribute Center at 2 p.m. with a reception at the Tribute Center to follow. Vault interment will be at Idlewild cemetery.
Joe was born Sept. 16, 1940, in Newark, Texas, to Arvil and Zona Mae (Light) Lawson. He spent his childhood in Pismo Beach, Calif., where he also attended schools and graduated high school.
Following his education he joined the U.S. Army and served his country until he was honorably discharged. He was then recalled to duty to serve during the 'Bay of Pigs.'
In 1962 he moved to Hood River, and started work with United Telephone Company. He then married
Betty Krieg, whom later passed away in 1982. Joe married
Jolene McKissen in 1983. He continued his work with the telephone company (now Sprint) until his retirement on Jan. 1, 2003.
Joe was a past member of the Hood River Elks Lodge and was involved with the Hood River County community. He always enjoyed riding ATVs with his son. In his retirement days he spent a lot of his time on his backhoe landscaping his yard and property.
Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife, Jolene, of Hood River, son Mitch Lawson of Vancouver, Wash., stepdaughter Janell Sewell of Tucson, Ariz., stepson Barry McKissen of Hood River, step-grandchildren Stephanie McKissen of Wasilla, Alaska, and Bryce Sewell of Tucson, Ariz., and sisters Mary Gilleand of Redding, Calif., and Rubie Goplin of Mead, Colo.
