James Jurgenson
James Lee Jurgenson, of Lincoln, Vt., passed peacefully at his home with Myrtle Pierce at his side on May 9, 2004. His death was beautifully commemorated by Native American ceremonies.
James was born on July 28, 1950, in The Dalles, Ore., the second child of Norman and Shirley Jurgenson. He was employed by the State of Oregon, working in hospitals in both Wilsonville and Salem for many years. James dedicated his life to helping the mentally ill. He was a believer in Native American culture and spirituality, having spent time on an Indian reservation. His hobbies included fishing, camping, and hunting. Later in life he enjoyed working with leather and carving wood. He lived primarily in Oregon and relocated to Vermont when his grandson was born in August 2003.
James is survived by his son, Dustin Jurgenson and fiance Sandra Collins of Ferrisburgh, Vt.; sisters Marilyn Battersby (Jerry) of Mosier and Julie Wandling (Larry) of Cascade Locks, Ore.; and a grandson, Leif Jurgenson.
Ceremonies will be organized in Oregon at a later date.

Arno Nelsen
Arno Gilbert Nelsen, a former Hood River resident, died May 17, 2004, in Portland, Ore. He was 90 years of age. Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 21, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Idlewild cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bingen, Wash.
Arno was born March 31, 1914, in Clements, Minn., to James and Mar (Meyer) Nelsen. On April 25, 1934, he and Wanita Schade were married . He moved to Hood River with his wife and family in 1955 and worked as a sawyer at Heinz Lumber Company in Dee until his retirement in 1979.
In 2002 he and his wife moved to Portland to be close to family. They have remained members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bingen, Wash.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Wanita Nelsen of Portland; three sons, Raymond of Gresham, Ore., Ted of Garibaldi, Ore., and Harry of Portland. Seventeen grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren also survive.
Three sons, John, Allan and Marvin Nelsen, preceded him in death.

Tadashi Inukai
Tadashi 'Tom' Inukai died on May 13, 2004, in Portland, Ore., at age 86 of natural causes. A funeral service will be scheduled at a later date.
He was born on Feb. 24, 1918, in Dee, Ore. He was raised and educated in the Hood River Valley, and was interned at Pinedale, Calif., and at Tule Lake, Calif, early in World War II. In 1942 he married Mecha Yamada. She died in 2002.
He moved to Chicago in 1943, and returned to Portland in 1950. He was a member of the Gateway Elks Lodge.
Tom operated several gas stations in the Portland area, and retired in the late 1980s.
He is survived by his sons, Richard Inukai of Tigard, Ore., and Marvin Inukai of Milwaukie, Ore., and his daughters, Myra Inukai of Portland and Carol Sugimura of Castro Valley, Calif. He is also survived by sisters Ruth Namba and T.A. Yamasaki, both of Portland, and his brother, Harry Inukai of Hood River.
He is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Roberta Wilson
The Dalles resident Roberta Wilson died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital. She was 67 years of age.
A funeral service will be Saturday, May 22, at Anderson's Tribute Center at 1 p.m. with interment to follow at Idlewild cemetery.

Eugene Aikin
Eugene Robert 'Bob' Aikin died in Hood River on May 4 at age 76, after a long, valiant battle with cancer.
He was an electrical engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area. After retirement, he and his wife, Irene, moved to the Hood River Valley, where he delighted in being close to nature, and having time for tennis, golf and computer work.
He is survived by his wife and children. Memorial contributions may be made to Greenpeace, Planned Parenthood, or Council for Secular Humanism. A celebration of Bob's life will be held the afternoon of May 30. For information, call 386-6837.

Theressa Matthews
Hood River resident Theressa Matthews died at her home on Thursday, May 27, 2004. She was 80 years of age. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. A visitation was held Tuesday, June 1, at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Theressa was born Oct. 4, 1923, to Lincoln and Eva (Howe) Watson in Grayson, Okla. Grayson is where she grew up and attended schools. On June 8, 1937, she married Lester Matthews in Grayson, Okla. With her family she moved to Eloy, Arizona. In 1962 the Matthews family moved to Parkdale, Ore.
Shortly thereafter the family moved to the Odell Elementary School which accommodated their large family. She worked and retired from Diamond Fruit Company.
Theressa was devoted to Jesus Christ and committed to sharing the love of God with everyone she came in contact with. She was a committed and loving wife for 66 years to Lester Matthews, Sr. She was his best friend, lover, wife and partner in the ministry. Her confirmed and faithful message in the ministry was 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to every nation.' Her ministry reached and touched the homeless, prisoners, widows, children of very condition, race, and creed. Most importantly reaching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren around the country.
She loved her family and was dedicated to providing and caring for them. Her words quoted in the book Letters To Our Daughters: 'you have been taught to love the Lord our savior. He has been the foundation of our family.'
Mrs. Matthews is survived by her husband Lester Matthews, Sr., sons Roy Matthews of Eloy, Arizona, James and Lester Matthews, Jr. of Hood River; Wesley Matthews of Seattle, Wash., Leodis Matthews of Los Angeles, Calif., Steven Matthews of Hood River; Michael Matthews of Naples, Fla., Mark Matthews of Portland, Ore.; Spencer Matthews of Phoenix, Ariz; Randy and Ondra Matthews of Portland; daughters Mary Cha of Goldendale, Wash.; Eler Cousin-Matthews of Parkdale, Ore; Billie Huizar of Hood River; Helen Lopez of Pittsburgh, Calif.; Marsha Biddix of Dallas, Texas; Sadie Matthews of Hood River; and Teyna Matthews of Hood River.
She is also survived by 44 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sons Paul, David and Daniel Matthews and daughter Lucille Lamb.

Andrew Iskra
Hood River resident Andrew Iskra died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at the Oregon Veteran's Home in The Dalles, Ore. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 3, at the Hood River Alliance Church at 1 p.m.
Andrew was born March 18, 1923, in Aberdeen, Wash., to Frank John and Mary (Matko) Iskra. His parents were Slovenian immigrants. Andy attended schools in the Aberdeen area and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1941, where he was the class Vice President. While in high school he worked as a paperboy for the Aberdeen World.
Following graduation Andy worked for Rayonier as a machinist. In 1943 he joined the Army during World War II. He served in the 11th Armored Division in General Patton's 3rd Army. He was a gunner with the F company in the Battle of the Bulge.
Upon his return to the United States Andy moved to Eugene, Ore., and attended the University of Oregon. He graduated with a Business Degree in Accounting. He then obtained his C.P.A. license. Andy joined and partnered in a firm: Lemon, Rowan, Iskra and Babcock. He spent the rest of his working career serving with this firm.
On June 27, 1949, he married Patricia Gardner in Eugene. In 1997 Andy retired and moved to Hood River, Ore. Once in Hood River he lived with his daughter and family (Mary Iskra and grandchildren Tom, Paul and Anne) and his caregivers for Alzheimers.
Mr. Iskra was an active member of the Eugene Lions Club and Rotary. He enjoyed baseball, golf, fishing and spending summer vacations at Crescent Lake, Ore.
He is survived by his brother Frank Iskra of Cincinnati, Ohio, daughters Teresa Elliott of McMinnville, Ore., and Mary Iskra of Hood River, grandchildren Tom Wanzek, Paul Wanzek and Anne Iskra all of Hood River.

Jane Kelly
Jane E. Kelly a long-time Hood River resident passed away May 29, 2004, at Providence Brookside Manor after a three-year battle with cancer.
Mary Jane Ellis Beith Kelly was born June 22, 1918, in Hood River, Ore., to Guy Speight Ellis and Irma Hannah Miller, the second of four girls. She attended Hood River schools. She was married March 24, 1940, to William Kirk Beith in Hood River and later moved to Joseph, Ore., where she bore three children: William (Bill) Beith, Glen Beith and Dona Beith.
In 1952 the family returned to Hood River and lived in the Oak Grove area for many years. Jane worked for the Oregon-Washington Telephone Company and later the Oregon State Experiment Station until her retirement.
After Kirk Beith's death in 1972 she remarried Scott B. Kelly in October 1973, and they moved to the Pine Grove area.
Until her stroke in August of 2000 she was an active member of the Hood River Valley Christian Church and the church's quilting group. She was also an active volunteer for, the Hood River Museum, the Hood River Historical Society and the American Red Cross and a 4-H leader for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy S. and Irma Ellis, her first husband, William Kirk Beith, and son Glen D. Beith, and sister Maxine Neel and her second husband of nearly 30 years, Scott B. Kelly.
She is survived by her son Bill Beith and wife, Linda, of Portland, Ore., and daughter Dona B. Schock of Overland Park, Kan., and step-daughter Joni Kelly Walker and her, husband, Don. She also leaves three grandchildren Brian Schock of Portland, Andrea Schock Duckwall of Hood River and her husband Nathan Duckwall, Megan Beith of Portland and one great-grandchild, Cole Douglas Duckwall.
Her family also included step-grandchildren Scott, Chris and Eric Walker and Debbie Ketchum and nine step-great-grandchildren: Jessica, Sam, Winston, Rachel, Cody, Kameron and Abby Walker of Hood River and Tillamook, Ore., and Kelly and Keshia Ketchum of Stayton, Ore.

Cyndi Almer
Former Hood River resident Cyndi Gallagher, also known as Cindy Almer, passed away May 17, 2004, in Oakland, Calif., after a long battle with Crohn's Disease. She was 52. Miss Almer was born Cynthia May Almer on Aug. 8, 1952, in Vancouver, Wash.
Survivors include brothers Jerry Almer and Dean Barbier and sister Kathie Schmid. Cyndi was an avid homemaker, she loved to bake and can. She loved to do arts and crafts. There was always room for a stray kitty at Cyndi's home.
Cyndi loved the Gorge and all the beauty it had to offer. And she loved to preserve all the fresh fruits Hood River had readily available.
A celebration of Cyndi's life will be held at the home of David and Kathie Schmid, 19302 N.E. 68th St., Vancouver, Wash, on Saturday, June 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. All of Cyndi's friends and family are welcome. Please call if you need directions, 360-256-6442.

John Hilden
Hood River resident John G. Hilden died May 26, 2004, at his home. He was 81 years of age. A Memorial Service will be held June 15, at 7 p.m. at Riverside Community Church.

Bruno Hukari
Hood River resident Bruno Hukari died May 30, 2004, at his home. He was 92 years of age. A gathering will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Anderson's Tribute Center 541-386-1000.

Lois Allen
Lois Irene Allen, a Hood River, Ore., resident died July 14, 2004, at her residence. She was 69 years of age.
Services will be held Monday, July 19, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 18, 2004 from 3:00 p.m. to 5 p.m., also at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Lois was born May 23, 1935 in Leonard, N.D., to John and Hattie (Barfuss) Christmann. She grew up and attended school in Leonard, and was active with the youth group and track team.
In 1951 she moved to Hood River with her family. She completed high school in Hood River and was active in church, band and worked at the hospital.
On March 6, 1953, she and Wilbur Allen were married . Lois was active in baseball, church Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She also served as a 4-H and Bluebird Leader. She worked at Hood River Stationers for 23 years and then managed the Hood River Candy Company for four years. After her retirement she volunteered at the Hood River Hospital working and buying for the gift shop.
She was preceded in death by her parents and younger brother, Gordon. She is survived by her husband, Wilbur Allen, sons Mike and his wife, Robin, all of Hood River, and Mitch and his wife Sharon of Aloha, Ore.; daughter Melinda McCorkle and her husband Randy of Sisters, Ore.; mother-in-law Hazel Dalleske, sister June Thompson both of Hood River, Ruby Vangsness of Leonard, N.D.; brother Merle Christmann of Carson City, Nev., and grandchildren Britt, Keri, Jamy and wife Summer, Michele Allen and Nicole and Koby McCorkle.
Interment will be at Pine Grove cemetery.
