Roland Lewis
Hood River resident Roland 'Ronnie' Lewis died Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Rosetta Assisted Living. He was 88 years of age.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 25, at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at Idlewild cemetery.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 24, at Anderson's Tribute Center from 4 to 7 p.m.
Roland Frank Lewis was born April 23, 1915, to Harry and Savannah (Smith) Lewis in Tygh Ridge, Ore. Ron grew up in the Tygh Ridge, Juniper Flat, Wapinitia area. He attended schools at Wapinitia, Kelley School, Smock Prairie, Tygh Valley High and graduated from Maupin High School in 1933.
After high school Ronnie worked for the Forest Service and later the C.C.C., falling snags until the spring of 1935, at which time he moved to Dee, Ore. Once in Dee he worked with his uncle Bill Smith falling and bucking timber. He later became a bullbuck and log sealer for Oregon Lumber Company and then earned the position of logging supervisor.
In 1936 he met Mamie Kusisto who was the bookkeeper for Oregon Lumber Company at Dee and they married
on July 2, 1938.
Around 1966 Ronnie became the logging manager for U.S. Plywood. U.S. Plywood was purchased by Champion from which he retired in 1975.
Ronnie was a member of the Elks Lodge since Feb. 24, 1938. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time with relatives and friends.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his daughter, Carol Murphy and her husband Kenneth of Hood River, granddaughters Amber D. Murphy of Novato, Calif., and Seija K. Murphy of Los Angeles, Calif., and sister Naomi Peterson of Salem, Ore. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mamie in 1993, three brothers, Lyle, Leland and Robert and two sisters, Elsie and Verla.

Marie Green
Marie A. Green, a resident of Hood River, died on March 19, 2004, in Hood River. She was 85 years of age.
Marie Green was born the daughter of Stephan and Anna Walters on Aug. 2, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was raised and educated in Ohio. She worked at McCrory Store and it was there that she met her husband, Kenneth Green.
They were married
on Sept. 25, 1943, and they later moved to Pennsylvania where Marie was a homemaker who cared for her children and family. In 1973, following the death of her husband, she moved to Michigan to be closer to her son. In 1998 she moved to Hood River, near her daughter, whre she resided until her death. Marie was a member of Rotary and enjoyed gardening, reading and sewing.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Lynn Roberge of Hood River, and son Kenneth Greene of Lansing, Mich., along with four grandchildren. A service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Bateman Carroll Chapel of Gresham is handling arrangements.
Joseph Scully
Joseph P. Scully passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the Oregon Veteran's Home in The Dalles. He was 81 years of age. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center with a reception to follow in the Tribute Center. A full obituary will appear in the next edition of the Hood River News.

Flossie Crapper
Hood River resident Flossie Crapper died Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 91 years of age. Services are pending at Anderson's Tribute Center, 541-386-1000.
Eldon Plank and Bernice Plank
On Feb. 28, 2004, Eldon and Bernice Plank both died at Mira Visa Care Center in Mount Vernon, Wash.
Bernice (Smith) Plank was born July 7, 1916, in Hood River, Ore. Eldon Plank was born Nov. 13, 1914, in White Salmon, Wash.
The couple was united in marriage on Sept. 3, 1935, in Stevenson. Eldon was a carpenter. During World War II, the couple resided in Vancouver, Wash., where he was foreman for a shipyard building boxer carriers. Bernice worked briefly as a burner, cutting patterns with a torch.
After the war, they moved to White Salmon and later moved to the Skagit Valley in 1955, residing in Sedro Woolley and Burlington before moving to Newhalem in 1958. Eldon was a maintenance carpenter for Seattle City Light and Bernice worked in the cookhouse for several summer tourist seasons.
The couple moved to Mount Vernon upon retirement and were snowbirds, wintering in Southern California. They enjoyed taking drives in the desert Southwest.
The couple is survived by their children Joan Craig of Las Vegas, Don Plank of Wenden, Ariz., and Tom Plank of Edison; two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
Bernice is also survived by sisters Cleo Cooper of Mesa, Ariz., Frances Chambers of Hood River, and Betty Walters of Hood River; Frank Smith of Portland and Bob Smith of Olympia.
A graveside service for the couple was held on March 5 at Hawthorne Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Hawthorne Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.
Ruth S. Langdon
Ruth S. Langdon passed away at her home outside White Salmon, Wash., on March 24, 2004. She was 80 years old.
A memorial service will be held at Gardner's Funeral Home in White Salmon at 2 p.m. on March 31.
Ruth was born to William and Mabel Shaffer in Los Angeles on June 29, 1923. The family later moved to Corvallis, Ore., where she attended high school and Oregon State University. She married
Cecil R. Langdon on Aug. 3, 1945. They spent a few years in Corvallis and then relocated to Ontario, Ore., where their son Andy was born.
Ruth devoted much of her life to helping others through her work as a case worker and later as the office manager for the state social services department in Ontario. She was an avid gardener and later enjoyed pottery as a hobby. As her health failed, she moved to Kennewick, Wash., and, two years ago, to White Salmon to be near her son.
Ruth is survived by her son, Andy, and eight grandchildren: Tanya Langdon of Madison, Wis.; Chris Langdon of Roseburg, Ore.; Jared, Kristopher, Matthew, Andrew, Sarah and Alina Langdon, all of White Salmon. One great-grandchild also survives her, Max Langdon Vogel of Madison, Wis.
George Bostwick
Longtime resident of Hood River, George Eben Bostwick, passed away March 27, 2004, at Providence Hospital in Portland, Ore. He was 78 years of age.
Funeral services will be held at Anderson Tribute Center on Friday, April 2, at 2 p.m. with interment at Idlewild cemetery in Hood River.
George was born in Battle Creek, Mich., on March 14, 1926, the son of Lyle D. and Edith Wilson Bostwick.
He was preceded in death by an older brother Kenneth and has two living sisters, Marie of Battle Creek, Mich., and Betty of Spray, Ore. His family moved to Portland when he was three years old and he attended grade school there. They moved to Hood River for eighth grade at Barrett School, then back to Portland to complete grade school. He returned to Hood River in 1940 to attend high school. He graduated in 1944.
On Feb. 1, 1944, George joined the U. S. Navy and he served in the South Pacific Theater - New Guinea, Australia and the Philippine Islands. He was discharged May 26, 1946, in Bremerton, Wash., and returned to Hood River where he married
his childhood sweetheart, Eileen Evans, at the old Hood River Valley Christian Church on Sept. 9, 1946.
George and Eileen were blessed with two children, Thomas George and Annette Louise, and four grandchildren: Marsha Schnieder of Fredricksburg, Va.; Mary Bostwick of Hood River; Becky and Joshua Owen, of Corvallis, Ore.
George worked most of his life in the Hood River Valley that he loved. During his employed years he worked at the saw mill in Dee; in the Radliff Orchards; as a salesman at Hood River Supply; a realtor for Larry Young and 26 years for the United States Postal Service where he retired on July 9, 1985.
After retirement George enjoyed having the time to continue working in the garden; boating on the Columbia (especially in the wind); hiking; camping; fishing; metal detecting and he and his wife enjoyed traveling extensively in the United States and other countries.
From his youth, George had been involved in the Christian faith. He was active in the Hood River Valley Christian Church for 34 years having served as a deacon and an elder and helped in the construction of the present building. In his later years he had been active in the Odell and Tucker Road Baptist Churches.

Kelita Carter
Kelita 'Peggy' Carter, a Parkdale, Ore., resident, died March 30, 2004, at her home. She was 70 years of age.
Services will be held on Thursday, April 1, at 2 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 1, from noon to 2 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
Kelita 'Peggy' Melba Carter was born on Aug. 26, 1933, in Murphysboro, Ill., to Harry 'Doc' House and Mary Melba Worthen House.
In 1944, the House family moved to Hood River where Peggy attended Frankton, Barrett and Hood River High School, graduating in 1951.
She married
her high school sweetheart, Donald Edward Carter, Oct. 31, 1952. They resided in Hood River before moving to Parkdale. They owned Cascade Dairy, milking cows until November 1999. Peggy was active in assisting her husband in all aspects of farming.
They were 4-H leaders with their children and won many prizes with their livestock and sewing groups. Peggy also belonged to Hood River County Extension Service, was a member of the Parkdale Skating Club and helped with community activities. She was a past American Legion Princess.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Don, of 51 years, daughter Melba Lefler and son-in-law Dale, daughter Nancy Lunt and son-in-law Ray, son David and daughter-in-law Debbie, son Daniel, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, mother Mary House, brother Kent House and numerous relatives.
Preceding her in death was her father, Harry House and sister, Sharon Bond.
Interment will be at Mt. View cemetery.

Ida Traner
Ida Ferne Traner was born May 5, 1907, to Henry and Myrtle Kendall in Limon Junction, Colo. She died April 27, 2004 at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were Friday, April 30, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center in Hood River, Ore. A private committal will be at Mountain View cemetery.
Ferne grew up in Colorado and South Dakota. She attended and graduated from Plano High School. Ferne married
Gwen O. Traner on Nov. 26, 1928. They farmed on the Traner family farm for a few years, then moved to Western South Dakota and farmed until 1936, when grasshoppers wiped out their crops.
They then moved to Brookings, S.D., where Ferne worked in restaurants for a short time. They came West to Creston, Wash., in 1942 and then to Hood River in 1983.
Ferne was a member of Creston Christian Church and attended the Valley Christian Church in Hood River. Her main interests were family, bowling, and fishing. She was an avid bowler and continued doing so until a week before her death.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter: Donovan Nelson and wife Carol of Redlands, Calif.; Donald Traner and wife Barbara of Umatilla, Ore.; Norma Marcum and husband Earl of Stanton, Ky. Eleven grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gwen, one son, Duane, and two brothers, Harold and Leon.
Betty Lou Trumbull
Betty Lou Trumbull was born in The Dalles, Ore., on Jan. 10, 1925, to parents Harrison and Hazel Miller Jones. She died on April 29, 2004, at the Columbia Care Cottage Assisted Living Center in Hermiston, Ore., where she was cared for over the past four months. She died at the age of 78 years.
She was married
to John R. Trumbull on June 6, 1943, in The Dalles. The family had lived in The Dalles, Hood River, Condon, LaGrande, Pendleton, Ore., and Rancho Mirage, Calif.
She was a member of the Palm Springs Baptist Church and Gideons. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ for her church and was an agent for the Condon, Kinzua and Southern Railroad. She was a Sunday school teacher and enjoyed bowling. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, Harrison and Hazel Jones, and her husband, John Robert Trumbull.
Betty is survived by sons, John Willard Trumbull of Portland, Ore; William Harrison Trumbull of Bend, Ore., daughters Susan Louis (Anita) Nicoles of Rancho Mirage, Calif., and Debbie Sue Pedro of Hermiston, Ore.
She is also survived by her sister, Eleanor Desiano and 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Friday, April 30, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hermiston. Disposition was by cremation. Memorials may be made to the Gideons. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston was in care of arrangments.
Marna Kohleppel Rubio
Former Hood River resident Marna Kristi Kohleppel Rubio died in an accident, Wednesday, April 28, 2004, in Idaho. She was 38 years of age. Services are pending at Anderson's Tribute Center, 541-386-1000.
Marna Rubio
Marna Kohlleppel Rubio, 38, of Caldwell, Idaho, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident while on her way to work.
Marna is one of five children born to Marvin and Doralee (Corbridge) Kohlleppel. Born and raised in Hood River, Ore., she graduated from Hood River Valley High School in 1984, later returning to teach ESL and was known lovingly by her students as 'Miss Kristina.'
Marna had a special affinity for children, dogs, the outdoors, the ocean, laughing, silly jokes and all things living. Shy and unassuming, Marna never sought out the spotlight but due to her dedication and talent, those who knew her often shone it upon her.
Her passion and gift was teaching. Marna never met a child she could not enchant, teach, or love, nor a person who was not made better by knowing her. She dedicated her life to enhancing the minds, lives, and character of preschoolers. She was a champion for education and children, she spent hours turning glue, paint and paper into fairies, castles, dreams and wishes. She was a wonderful, loving person.
Marna is survived by her loving husband and partner of 11 years, Luis Rubio; her mother, Doralee, of Hood River; grandmother, Dorothy, of American Falls, Idaho; sister Alison; brother-in-law James, niece Libby and nephew Alex of Yakima, Wash.; brother Jeff, sister-in-law Carrie, niece Keely, and nephew Kellen of Corvallis; brother Martin and niece Cindy of Samammish, Wash.; sister Susan and brother-in-law Anthony of Washougal, Wash.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Marna leaves behind a legacy of friends, colleagues and students.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, at the Hood River Church of Latter Day Saints and interment will follow at Pine Grove cemetery. Services will be held Tuesday, May 4, at 4 p.m. at the LDS Chapel, 4509 South Montana, Caldwell, Idaho.
Family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Marna Kohlleppel Rubio Memorial, 315 S. Main Street, Payette, ID 83661. This fund is set up to keep her dream alive by providing funding for preschoolers at the Marble Front Head Start's garden project and for arts and crafts.
