Vault interment will be at Pine Grove cemetery. Mary R. Wonsyld passed away quietly in Hood River the morning of Thursday Jan. 22, surrounded by her family and friends.
Mary Ruth Reynolds was born April 12, 1926, in the small Texas town of Ranger, near Houston, to Benjamin Allen Reynolds and Bonnie Ruth Ricker. She grew up in a tight knit family of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives who loved music and story telling.
Her parents divorced when she was a child and her mother soon married Guy Barnes, who raised and loved Mary as his own child. Her father, Benjamin, was killed in a tornado when she was only 12 years old.
Mary was 13 years older than her closest sibling and was soon nicknamed 'Goose' by her brother and sisters because of her storytelling and mothering of them. Her grandchildren fondly remember nights laying in bed with 'Grannie' while she told them stories of Hansel and Gretel and the Three Little Pigs.
Mary's stepfather Guy came to Vancouver, Wash., in 1942 in search of a better future for his family. Mary, along with her mother, brother Guy, and sister Jane came soon after on a train from Texas. Her youngest sister June was born in Washington State.
Mary worked in the Vancouver shipyards during World War II as one of the original 'Rosie the Riveters, ' working in the telegraph office, delivering messages around the shipyards. This is where she met her husband of 57 years, Leonard Wonsyld. She was also part of the christening ceremony for the U.S.S. Midway.
Mary and Leonard married May 15, 1946, in Vancouver, Wash., and soon welcomed their daughter, Rae, into their family. By the 1950s they lived in the community of Dee at the Dee Mill, and eventually moved up to Dee Flat where they lived while their children grew up.
Mary worked as a secretary at Parkdale Elementary School and was always a welcome and well-known face in the Parkdale community by students, staff and parents. Later she moved on to work for Hood River County Juvenile Department helping troubled kids.
After retirement Mary and Leonard traveled in their RV around the U.S., their favorite stops being Texas, Tennessee and all corners of Oregon along with spending their winters in Arizona and making trips into Northern Mexico.
Mary was an artist and loved to paint and draw, making paper dolls for her grandchildren, pine needle baskets and paintings of her favorite subject, Mount Hood. She also loved genealogy and spent countless hours researching her family tree.
Mary's battle with arthritis curbed her ability to pursue her favorite hobbies, but she still managed to make cards and small paintings for her great- grandchildren for Christmas and birthdays and delighted in seeing and spending time with them as with all her family whom she dedicated her life to.
Surviving Mary are her children; Rae and Gary Whiting, Beaverton; Kary and Dan Betz, Hood River; Beverly and Frank Garner, Troutdale. Also surviving are grandchildren; Rachell and Chad Lindley, Jeffrey Whiting, Seth and Kimberly Garner, Angela Gray, Russ Gray and Jonny Betz.
Her great-grandchildren are Alexa Lindley, Savannah Garner, Paige Lindley, Ryan Gray, and Chloe Garner. She also leaves behind sisters Jane (Mrs. Bud) Arrowsmith of Tennessee, and June (Mrs. Chuck) Anderson of Washington State, and brother Guy (Kathie) Barnes of California, brother-in-law Ralph (Patricia) Wonsyld of Hood River, Lauana (Mrs. Melvin) Sparks of Parkdale, and brother-in-law Riley Moore Jr. of Washington as well as nieces, nephews and countless treasured friends.
Preceding her in death are husband Leonard Wonsyld, mother Bonnie Ricker Barnes, father Benjamin Reynolds, stepfather Guy Barnes, grandparents; Benjamin F. Reynolds, Flora Speck Reynolds, Nathan Dempsey Ricker, Mary Bradford Ricker, Edna Allison Barnes and Ephraim Barnes. Although her family grieves at the loss of someone so loved, we also rejoice in knowing that she is once again free.

Thomas McGreer
Thomas Henry (Hank) McGreer passed away on Jan. 25, 2004, at the age of 94. A Hood River resident since 1983, he was an active member of the community and a loving friend and neighbor to many. A gentle-hearted man with an infectious smile and warm laugh, he will be missed greatly.
The eldest of five siblings, Hank was born on Jan. 5, 1910, in Cedaredge, Colo., to Hugh Dimond McGreer and Irene Kruse McGreer. At age three he moved with his family to Fossil, Ore., where his grandfather Thomas Henry McGreer had forged ground on the new family home. Living the simple life, Hank worked alongside the family on the ranch, and traveled by horseback to the Clarno School. He later attended High School at Shaniko and Tygh Valley. He left the ranch in 1929 to attend The Milwaukee School of Engineering (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and completed his Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering in three years.
While in college, he met his wife Ruth at a Milwaukee hotel where they were both employed. They were married Sept. 1, 1933, and drove to Oregon, camping along the way. In 1940, they moved to Chicago so that Henry could complete his graduate work.
Hank worked as an engineer for the Idaho Power Company, Westinghouse, Argonne National Laboratory, Harza Engineering and Fermi National Laboratory. In 1950, he moved with his family to Wheaton, Ill., where he built his family's home. His career later presented him with an opportunity to work overseas, where he supervised the design of transmission systems to provide electricity for Pakistan and Afghanistan.
It proved to be a fulfilling adventure for the family and even after their departure three years later, in 1968, it was a land and people that continued to touch his heart. His journeys continued when his work later took him to Cairo, Egypt to work on the Aswan Dam. In 1980, Hank retired and returned with Ruth to Oregon, taking up residence in Hood River. Two years later, at age 73, he built his retirement home on Cherry Drive.
A dedicated humanitarian, Hank was involved in many social causes, never forgetting the needs of his fellow man. He was an active member of the Southside Congregational Church (Chicago), First Presbyterian Church (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Elmhurst Presbyterian Church (Elmhurst, Ill).
In Hood River he was a member of the Riverside Community Church congregation, as well as a member of the Hood River Lions for more than twenty years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Passionate about science and mathematics, Hank always embraced new technologies and ideas - even using a personal computer and Internet into his nineties. But first and foremost, he was a man of God who deeply believed in the simplicities of life and the rights of equality for his fellow man.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth Mappes McGreer; his sister, Helen McGreer Lewis, of Seattle, Wash.; his son, Thomas Henry McGreer and his wife, Vicki, of Marietta, Ga.; his eldest daughter, Mary McGreer Olson and her husband, Robert, of Hood River; his youngest daughter, Irene McGreer Reidy, of Ridgewood, N.J.; his granddaughters, Jennifer and Meredith Olson of Portland, Ore., and San Francisco, Calif. (respectively); and his grandson, Wesley Reidy, of Bloomington, Ind.
A visitation will be held at Anderson Tribute Center in Hood River on Jan. 30 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral will be held on Jan. 31 at 11:30 a.m. at the Antelope Community Church in Antelope, Ore. In lieu of flowers, donations in kind may be made in Hank's name to the Hood River Chapter of the Lions Foundation.
