Sharon Bond
Sharon K. “Penny” House Bond, 62, a resident of The Dalles, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at a local hospital.
She was born Sept. 15, 1940, in Murphysboro, Ill., the youngest of three children to Harry A. and Mary (Worthen) House.
In 1943 her family moved to Hood River, where she grew up attending local schools. She was in the class of 1958 at Wy’East High School.
On Sept. 28, 1956, she married Burl Bond, Jr. and they made their home in Hood River for a number of years before moving to The Dalles in the late 1960s.
She was a homemaker and loved maintaining her home and cooking. Early in her adult life she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School classes. Active in her community, she served as a 4-H leader and as the official scorekeeper for the Western Little League in addition to serving with the Chenowith Roller Skating program and working as the statistician and scorekeeper for her husband’s Babe Ruth baseball team. For the past six years she had been the official scorekeeper for the Oregon High School State/Metro baseball series held in The Dalles each June.
Most of all, she loved animals, especially dogs. She had been active in animal concerns, for many years serving as the treasurer for Mid-Columbia Animal Friends spay and neuter fund. In more recent years she and her husband provided a foster home for Home At Last Animal Friends. She had told her friends that when they get to heaven they would find her working in Puppy Heaven.
She had been a member of the Rowena Baptist Church and enjoyed on-line witnessing for her faith with her computer. She discovered computers during the last three years of her life and enjoyed “dressing up” her e-mails and sending them.
She is survived by her husband, Burl Bond, Jr. and her children and their families; son Kent and his wife, Anna Bond, of Hillsboro and their three children, Derek, Chelsea, and Jessica; her daughter, Lisa and husband, Jeff Mabrey, of The Dalles and their three children Heidi, Jeffrey and Jacob; daughter Kaye and her husband, Wayne Smith, of The Dalles and their children Zachary and Summer.
Also surviving are her mother, Mary House of Hood River, brother Kent and Maria House of Prineville, Ore., sister Peggy and her husband, Don Carter, of Parkdale, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family, including her dog and steadfast companion Maddie. She was preceded in death by her father in 1967.
A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 16, in the Grand Ballroom of the Civic Auditorium in The Dalles, with the Reverend George Clark presiding. A luncheon reception will follow the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Small Time Dog Rescue, 5630 Wahtonka Road, The Dalles, OR 97058 or to Home At Last Animal Friends, P.O. Box 390 in The Dalles. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation and Burial.

Marion Castle
Hood River resident Marion “Bill” Castle died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at his home. He was 86 years of age. A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 19, at Anderson’s Tribute Center with Vault interment to follow at Pine Grove cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at Anderson’s Tribute Center from 4 to 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge c/o Anderson’s Tribute Center 1401 Belmont Hood River, OR 97031.

Ronald Stewart
Ronald A. Stewart, a Hood River, Ore., resident, died June 10, 2003, in Ephrata, Wash. He was 60 years of age.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Frederik Stiles
For friends fortunate enough to have encountered the energy for life paraded by Frederik Stiles:

Arlen Lindsley
Hood River resident Arlen Ray Lindsley passed away July 29, 2003, at the age of 68. A Tribute Service will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 616 State Street, Hood River, Ore.
Arlen was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and lived in California, Arizona and Oregon, before settling in Oakdale, Calif., where he graduated high school in 1953. He attended Modesto Junior College for two years and then went on to graduate from the University of Southern California, with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1957.
Arlen worked for the JC Penney Company for 19 years and was transferred from Modesto, Calif., to Portland, Ore., in 1963. In 1978, Arlen came to the Hood River area to manage Millers Department Store and has resided in Hood River ever since. Early on in his life Arlen developed a love for service in his journey to become an Eagle Scout. This love for community and service poured over into the community in Hood River, where he actively participated in the Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club, Rotary Club, Toastmasters and was a Trustee at his church. He volunteered for various charitable causes such as the Labor Day Cross Channel Swim and most recently, the Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.
Arlen is survived by his wife of 40 years, Pauline, six children Richard Morrison of Wilsonville, Ore., Pamela Morrison of Vancouver, Wash., Russell Morrison of Corinth, Mississippi, Paula Morrison Janac of Tigard, Ore., Jim Lindsley of The Dalles, Ore., Connie Lindsley Dobbins of Portland, brother Wayne Lindsley of Anchorage, Alaska and eight grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Lindsley’s name to Asbury United Methodist Church, c/o Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.

Lucile Collins
Lucile Lauretta Collins, a Hood River resident, passed away July 31, 2003, at her home. She was 83 years of age.
Lucile was born Sept. 14, 1919, in White Salmon, Wash., to Alice (Downs) and Homer Laurance Breedlove. She attended Pleasant View School in Husum, Wash. On Nov. 2, 1956, Lucile married Donald Lewis Collins in Grangeville, Idaho. That same year the couple moved to Hood River, where they have lived in the same home for over 42 years.
Lucile collected old dishes, plates and china and she loved to write poems, many of which were published. She enjoyed traveling in the family R.V. and meeting her friends every morning at McDonalds. Lucile always talked about her family and each day she would walk hand in hand with her husband.
Survivors include her husband, Donald, of Hood River; daughter Janice London of Dallesport, Wash.; son Donald Collins, Jr., of Hood River; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by grandson Johnny Dean Smith; her parents, Alice and Laurance Breedlove; and brothers Irvin and Ernie Breedlove.
A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 4 at the White Salmon cemetery in White Salmon, with the Rev. Charles Chase officiating. Box 390, White Salmon, WA 98672.

J. Scott Richmond
J. Scott Richmond, a Hood River, Ore., resident, died in a glider accident on July 28, 2003, at the age of 45.
A gathering will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003 at 10 a.m. to remember Scott at “The Wall, ” located east of Maryhill, Wash., with a reception to be announced at the gathering.
Scott was born 1958 to Joanne Stetson Richmond. Scott led an accomplished life.
Starting as an electrician, he did lighting in the entertainment business. His extreme passion and expertise allowed him the pleasure of working with such bands as Billy Joel, Bruce Springstein, Andreas Vollenweider, Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, Bon Jovi and many, many more during his 15 years on the road.
His real true passion and love was the wind, which brought him to Hood River. Loving Hood River’s beauty and all its people, Scott decided to stop his “Life on the road” and live in Hood River.
He began doing “Lighting and Special Effects” in the theater and movies. He worked on such movies as “A Few Good Men, ” “The Hunted, ” “Rose Red’ and others.
Scott lived his life with such energy, love, kindness and passion for the challenge.
He wanted his final words to read: “There’s no point in playing it safe for the sake of growing old.”
He is survived by his father Stetson Richmond of Port Charlotte, Fla., mother Joanne McCarten of Cropseyville, N.Y., sister Donna Melanson and family of Bolton, Mass., brother Craig Richmond and family of Grand Junction, Colo.

Bennie DeMarino
Bennie DeMarino, devoted wife, exceptional mother, steadfast friend, lost her fight with an aggressive form of brain cancer Friday, July 25, 2003, at 5:30 p.m. She was surrounded by her children, Stephen and Sasha, husband Tom, and her cats, Zool and Boots.
The life of this creative artist, teacher, and strong lady will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in White Salmon, hosted by the DeMarinos. A church service will be given at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Hood River, Ore., at 3:30 p.m. As friends, relatives, and fellow artists, you are all invited to celebrate the life of this distinguished woman.
The family requests donations be made to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Virginia Fox
Virginia Grace (Paasch) Fox, a longtime Hood River, Ore., resident, died July 31, 2003, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was 85 years of age.
Arrangements are pending at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 541- 386-1000.

Danforth Sylvester
Danforth H. Sylvester, 82, a resident of Yuma, Ariz., died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 4, 2003, at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, Ore.
A Celebration of Live Service will be held on Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Anderson Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River.
Danforth Horace Sylvester was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Rainier, Ore., the son of Horace A. Sylvester and Fannie Elizabeth (Moss) Sylvester. He was raised and received his education in the Hood River community.
He was a Veteran of World War II, having joined the United States Army in 1943. Danforth served for two years until he received his Honorable Discharge in 1945.
Danforth was united in marriage to Lorene H. Cantrell on Aug. 2, 1942, in Bremerton, Wash. Following their marriage they made their home in the Hood River community. Since his retirement in 1983, they have spent the winters in their home in Yuma, Ariz. Danforth and Lorene celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary this past August.
He worked as a logger throughout his lifetime, having worked for several logging companies over the years, including the Hanel Lumber Company in Hood River. Danforth retired in 1983.
Danforth was a member of the United Methodist Church. Among his interests, he enjoyed traveling and working.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene H. Sylvester, of the family home in Yuma, Ariz.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jack and Pam Sylvester of Great Falls, Mont., and William “Bill” Sylvester of Forest Grove, Ore.; a sister, Pegcon McAskill of New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada; and two grandchildren, Tad Sylvester of Bend, Ore., and Scott Sylvester and his wife, Carol of Albuquerque, N.M.
Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove is in charge of the arrangements, 503-357-2161.

Jean Johanson
Jean Elaine Johanson, of Cook, Wash., passed away in Portland, Ore., on Sept. 4, 2003. She was 44 years old. She was born in White Salmon, Wash., to Icel June (Seymour) and G. Duane Gahimer on Jan. 4, 1959. Jean was raised on her family home site at Fouts Road between Cook and Mill A. She attended elementary school at the Mill A School, graduated from Stevenson High School, and continued her education at Yakima Valley Community College and Clark College. Jean loved to learn, completing several professional educational programs including medical training which she used to begin her own business in the medical field. She was the Office Manager for Hood River Dermatology, was self-employed as a medical office consultant and managed her own medical transcription business.
Jean loved plants and gardening. Jean was an excellent photographer, with many unique family portraits credited to her creativity and sensitivity to her subjects. She was very creative and loved arts and crafts; she had a particular fondness for ceramics. Jean was a wonderful cook and her family could always count on her to bring something special and creative to gatherings. Jean was active at the Mill A School, participating in school activities with the students.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Johanson, of Cook; son Nicolas Johanson of Cook; father and step-mother Duane and Claudette Gahimer of Glenwood, Wash.; sisters Virginia Hansel and Anita Gahimer-Crow, both of Cook; brothers Ernie Gahimer of Omak, Wash. and Frank Gahimer of Cook; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her mother, Icel June Benson and step-father Bill Benson.
Funeral services for Jean will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Hood River, Ore., on Monday, Sept. 8 with burial at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Cape Horn, Wash. Everyone is invited to join the family for a dinner to celebrate Jean at the Mt. Pleasant Grange Hall immediately following a brief graveside service.
Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Jean’s name may do so to the Christian and Missionary Fund of the Alliance Church in care of Gardner Funeral Home PO Box 390, White Salmon, WA 98672.

Donald Birkenfeld
Stevenson, Wash., resident Donald Lee Birkenfeld, age 73, passed away in White Salmon, Wash. on Sept. 6, 2003.
He was born in North Bend, Ore., to Ruth and Louis Birkenfeld on Dec. 25, 1929. As a young boy, Don moved to Hood River, graduating from Hood River High School in the late 1940s.
He moved to Stevenson in 1964 and married Eva Mae Lane on June 24, 1950. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000. Don worked for Birkenfeld Logging in Dee, Stevenson Co-Ply and also did some long-hauling. He was a member of the Eagles and loved gardening, flowers and working in the yard.
Don enjoyed taking drives and going to the coast. He particularly liked stopping by The Bungalow for a burger. A very friendly man, Don loved sitting on the deck, talking to people and sharing his great sense of humor. He welcomed company and friends and was a wonderful father and grandfather.
Mr. Birkenfeld is survived by his sons Larry Birkenfeld, and his wife JoAnne, of Stevenson, and Les and Martin Birkenfeld, both of Carson, Wash. He is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva, who passed away on Aug. 8, 2001, sister Allison Still and son Dee Birkenfeld.
A graveside service will be held on Friday Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. at Mt. View cemetery in Hood River. Gardener Funeral Home handled arrangements.
