Velma Brock-Miller
Velma Marie Brock-Miller, 90, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., died at a local care center on Friday, June 13, 2003.
She was born Dec. 2, 1912, in Clem, Ore., the fourth of 11 children to Fred and Nellie (Cline) Gasser and was raised in The Dalles.
Velma was a member of the First Christian Church and enjoyed homemaking, cooking, sewing, music, dancing, playing the piano, gardening and being a Girl Scout Leader. She had worked at The Dalles Cherry Growers and Muirhead’s Cannery.
She is survived by her two daughters, Delores Ann (Marti) Clower of Porterville, Calif., and her children, Wesley and Johnny Clower and Vicky Huddleston, and Linda Louise (Peterson) Gallagher and her husband Mike of White Salmon, Wash., and their children Kelly and Megan Gallagher; six great-granchildren; and her sister Gladys Mareb of Massachusetts. She was preceded in death by her four husbands, John Marti, Arthur Peterson, Clarence Brock and Jack Miller, eight brothers and one sister.
Viewing and visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, with Pastor Mike Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at The Dalles Odd Fellow cemetery. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Lee Shalhope
Lee Ferris Shalhope died Aug. 3, 2003, in Portland, Ore., at the age of 92. He was born in Stroud, Okla., on July 16, 1911, to George and Velma Shalhope.
Mr. Shalhope began college at Oklahoma A & M and completed his education with a degree in accounting from Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo., in 1936. He and Cecile Opal Marshall were married
the same year. Upon graduation, he joined Cooper-Jarrett Truck Lines in Kansas City, Mo. In 1945, he co-founded Mid-American Truck Lines, headquartered in Kansas City.
He and his family moved to St. Joseph, Mo., in 1946, and then to LaGrange Park, Illinois in 1948 where they lived until Mr. Shalhope’s retirement from Mid-American in 1970. He and his wife, Cecile, then resided in Orlando, Fla., before moving to Portland, Ore., in 1990.
Before retirement, Mr. Shalhope was on the board and served as President of the Illinois Central Motor Freight Association. He was an active volunteer with Boy Scouts of American for over 50 years, serving on the National Executive Council and attending National and International Jamborees. After retirement, he served the Southern Region Council in Florida and Puerto Rico and the Cascade Pacific Region Council in Oregon.
Mr. Shalhope’s dedication and service to the Boy Scouts were honored with both the Silver Antelope and the Silver Beaver awards. He was a Life Loyal member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Over his lifetime, Mr. Shalhope was a devoted and faithful church member in each community where he resided.
Mr. Shalhope is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: Don and Betty Shalhope of Hood River, Ore., and Robert and Emma Shalhope of Norman, Okla.; five grandchildren and their spouses: Sara and Michael Christie, Julie and Peter Kalnin, Robert C. and Stephanie Shalhope, Adelaide Lee Shalhope, Mary Cecile and Robert Pallotta; and three great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by Cecile, his wife of 67 years, his grandson Tyler Ferris, and his sisters, Garvene and Lorraine.
Funeral services will be held Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hood River, Ore., with interment at Pine Grove cemetery.

Virginia Fox
Virginia Grace (Paasch) Fox, a Hood River, Ore., resident, died July 31, 2003, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was 85 years of age.
Graveside services were held Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Pine Grove cemetery.
Virginia was born June 9, 1918, in Hood River, Ore., to Hugo and Grace (Perry) Paasch. She was raised and educated in Hood River. On April 30, 1951, she and Bernard P. Fox were married
. He died in 1978. In her younger years she enjoyed playing golf and sewing.
Survivors include her sons, Dick Fox and his wife Lana of Hood River, Ore., and Mike Fox and his wife Karen of London, England and her brother, Perry “Bud” Paasch of Hood River, Ore. Five grandsons, Bob, Randy, David, Kevin and Ben Fox also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Bernard.
Vault interment was at Pine Grove cemetery.

Daryl ‘Doc’ Strader
Graveside funeral services for Daryl R. “Doc” Strader were held Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Maple Leaf cemetery, Oak Harbor, Wash., with Cdr. Fred Renfroe, CHC, USN officiating. The NAS Whidbey Island Honor Guard and the Oak Harbor Police Department provided funeral honors.
Daryl Russell Strader died at his home in Oak Harbor on July 28, 2003, at the age of 81. He was born Oct. 1, 1921, in Irrigon, Ore., to Frank Edward and Esther Graybeal (Thurner) Strader. He was raised in Irrigon, near Hermiston and Cascade Locks, near The Dalles, Ore. Daryl joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression and worked on construction of the Bridge of the Gods at Cascade Locks.
Daryl Strader joined the U. S. Navy in October of 1940. During World War II he was assigned to the aircrew of VPB-52, the Black Cat squadron, flying aboard the PBY’s Doc served as flight engineer for much of his military career. Doc was married
to Celeste Delight Coe in Vancouver, Wash. on Jan. 10, 1945. They were happily married
for 56 years.
Doc retired on June 1, 1960, at NAS Seattle as an ADC (E-7) with 20 years of military service. Following retirement, he was employed at NAS Whidbey by McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Company as a field rep.
On June 1, 1960, Doc began a second career, that of law enforcement. He was hired by the City of Oak Harbor to work as a police officer. He began as a patrolman. Doc worked his way up through the ranks and on Feb. 10, 1979, retired as Captain.
Doc Strader attended the Whidbey Presbyterian Church of Oak Harbor. He was a member of the Chief Petty Officers Association, the PBY Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Whitehead-Muzzall Post 7392, Navy League of the United States.
Doc Strader loved hunting and fishing. He and Celeste commercial fished at Neah Bay and LaPush for several years. He had a special hunting cabin near Goldendale where he spent many wonderful days with special friends and family.
Daryl Strader is survived by four children and their spouses: Daryla and Charles Extine of Renton, Wash.; Pamela Kennedy of Oak Harbor; Mark and Donna Strader of Lynnwood, Wash., and Jana Palmer of Oak Harbor. One brother Rick Strader of Madras, Ore., and one sister Gayanne Thompson of Culver, Ore., also survive him. Seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
His wife Celeste Strader and two brothers, Dennis and David Strader preceded him in death.

Michael Monroe
Michael “Mikey” James Monroe, born Oct. 16, 2000, died July 28, 2003. He was born in Hackettstown, N.J.
Mikey is survived by parents James and Julie Monroe, brother Spencer, of Hackettstown, grandparents Al and Pam Hawkins of Hood River, Ward Monroe and Pat Green of Redmond, Mike and Jenny Thompson of Virginia and Robert and Yolanda Sewell of Pennsylvania.
Also surviving is great-grandmother Deloris York of Hood River, and Aunts and Uncles Suzy and Darin Coreson of Parkdale and Christy and Troy McCadden of Connecticut and cousins Sara Coreson, Cade and Macy McCadden.
He was with us only a short time but will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Memorials can be given in Mikey’s name to Heaven Sent Nursery School, 298 Main St., Hackettstown N.J. 07840.
Marlene Black
Marlene J. Black of Eugene, Ore., died on July 31, 2003, at the age of 52, of pulmonary hypertension.
Marlene was born on Nov. 18, 1950, in The Dalles, Ore., to Willis and Margie (Camp) Gholston.
Marlene grew up in Mosier, Ore., graduated from Wahtonka High School in The Dalles, and attended Ore., College of Education in Monmouth (now Western Ore., University) and Portland Business College.
She worked as a secretary until 1974 when she lost her sight due to illness. She was very active in the blind community. She was past president of Supporting Independent Living of the Visually Impaired (SILVI.) She was also past president of the Emerald Council of the Blind, and was active in University Street Christian Church and Bergan Baptist Church.
She formed and facilitated a support group for disabled women, volunteered for Head Start of Lane County, performed puppet shows for awareness featuring a disabled character for Kids on the Block, did extensive classroom education of blind awareness, and consulted with the City of Eugene on Americans with Disabilities (ADA) issues. Her hobbies were reading and her dogs.
She married
Allen Black in Vancouver, Wash., in 1972. They later divorced. She married
Bob Hager in Eugene on May 9, 1995.
She is survived by her husband, Bob, of Eugene, parents Willis and Margie Gholston of Mosier, her son, Kevin Hager of Coburg, Ore., and sisters Marilynn Shaw of Mosier, Molli Gholston of Beaverton, and Jeanne Reeves of Mosier.
A memorial service was held on Aug. 5.

Arthur Santavicca, Sr.
Arthur Santavicca, born April 10, 1915, in Bearcreek Mont., to Mauro Santavicca and Isabella Gallina, died Sept. 2, 2003, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.
Arthur joined the U.S. Navy in 1934 and retired a Chief Machinist Mate in 1954. During his career in the Navy he served in World War II, the Korean War, and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He spent time on the battleship U.S.S. Arizona, the destroyer Pruitt, and the Destroyer Rupertus.
Arthur loved children, dancing, traveling, and performing stand-up comedy. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks, and VFW.
Arthur was preceded in death by his sister, Evra Boscia; daughter-in-law, Gloria Santavicca; first wife, Maryellen Jones, of Bremerton, Wash.; and by his second wife Betty Harper.
Arthur had a wonderful 42 years with Maryellen and a wonderful 21 years with Betty.
Arthur was a resident of Newport, Ore., for the past 13 years and recently moved to Hood River to be near family.
Survivors include his sister, Lily Hitschew; two sons, Arthur and Michael; daughter-in-law, Jean Santavicca; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Arthur’s humor, stories, magic tricks, and love will be missed by all of his family and friends.
Private cremation was held with Anderson’s Tribute Center in care of arrangements.
A private memorial service will be held in Riverside, Calif.
Kimiko Yamashita
Hood River resident Kimiko “Kim” Yamashita died at her home on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003.
Services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church.

Lucille Birkenfeld
Lucille Jane “Lucy” Birkenfeld, age 75, died Sept. 13, 2003, at her Hood River, Ore., residence.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. at Mt. View cemetery.
Lucy was born June 5, 1928, in Toledo, Ore., to Gordon and Viola (Mock) Emerson. She was raised and educated in Toledo, and had resided on the Oregon coast and Bend, Ore., before moving to Hood River in 1972.
On May 19, 1984, she and Tony Birkenfeld were married
. She and Tony owned and operated Lucy Lambkins daycare for 11 years. She loved children and was everbody’s “Grandma Lucy.” Lucy and Tony enjoyed relaxing at the casinos. They went regularly and she was very lucky.
She loved her children and grandchildren dearly. Many of her earlier years were spent working as a nurse’s assistant. Lucy had a huge heart and always went out of her way to check on anyone in need. Another pastime Tony and Lucy enjoyed was clam digging on the Oregon coast. Lucy wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. Not only did she dig the clams but also she quickly cleaned them by the bucket. Lucy’s other love was spending time enjoying her flowers. She especially loved roses.
She is survived by her husband, Tony, of Hood River; son Gary Williams and his wife, Duella, of Bend; daughter Janice Flynn of Portland, Ore.; daughter Cathy Frazier and her husband, Russ, of Hood River; step-daughters Lisa Bailey and her husband, Terry, of Hood River, and Beth Deskin and her husband, Terry, of Mosier, Ore. Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
