Yury Vogt
Yury N. Vogt died unexpectedly on May 30, 2003, in Kodiak, Alaska.
Yury was born May 18, 1975. He is the son of Judy Cobb of Mt. Hood and Frank Vogt of Yachats, Ore.
Scott Kelly
Scott B. Kelly, a longtime Hood River, Ore., resident, died July 16, 2003. He was 85 years of age.
Services will be held on Monday, July 21, at 2 p.m.. at Anderson’s Tribute Center.
Scott was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Portland, Ore., to Fielding and Bess (Barker) Kelly. He had two older sisters, Elizabeth “Bill” Kelly Swan and Catherine Kelly. The family moved to Hood River, Ore., when Scott was about four years old. He graduated from Hood River High School in 1936.
In 1938, he and Hazel Jarvis were married
. They later divorced. Scott volunteered into the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving two years stationed in the Pacific. Following his discharge, he returned to Hood River and purchased an orchard.
Scott’s entire working career was in the fruit industry. He worked two decades as a full time grower and a like period in agricultural research working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Oregon State University.
Scott married
Jane Beith in 1973 at the Hood River Valley Christian Church. In 1990 he leased the day-to-day operation of the orchard he farmed for 50 years.
Scott was a member of the Hood River Valley Christian Church, a charter and 25-year member and first fire chief of the Pine Grove Fire Department, a board member of the Pine Grove Fire District and fifty-seven year member of B.P.O.E. #1507. He had also served on numerous civic, school and industry committees.
Scott will be remembered as a gentleman’s gentleman and for his sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of nearly thirty years, Jane Kelly of Hood River; daughter Joni Walker and her husband Don of Odell, Ore.; step-children Bill Beith of Portland, and Donna Schock of Kansas City, Kan.; grandchildren Scott, Chris and Eric Walker and Debbie Ketchum; step grandchildren Brian Schock, Andrea Duckwall and Megan Beith and nine great-grandchildren; Jessica, Sam, Weston, Rachel, Cody, Kameron and Abby Walker and Kelly and Keshia Ketchum.
Vault interment will be at Pine Grove cemetery.

Burley ‘Dean’ Covey
Bend, Ore., resident Dean Covey died July 15, 2003, at his home. He was 55 years of age.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 19, at Pine Grove cemetery in Hood River, Ore., at 2 p.m., with a reception following at the Zeman family home, 6485 Highway 35 Mt. Hood, Ore.
A memorial service will be held and announced at a later date in Bend, Ore.
Burley Dean Covey was born Jan. 17, 1948, to Burley Dow and Mary (McAtee) Covey in Sheridan, Mont. Dean spent the first part of his childhood in Montana, until around age eight he and his family moved to Odell, Ore. He graduated from Wy’East High School in 1966.
Following his education Dean joined the U.S. Navy and served his country during the Vietnam War, being awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was recognized as the most outstanding recruit in his company. He was then honorably discharged from the Navy in 1971.
Dean then returned to Odell, and worked for Pacific Power and Light for 18 years. On July 17, 1971, Dean married
Renee Morgan in Portland, Ore. Together they moved their family to Bend, in 1978. Dean worked for Bonneville Power, where he was a faithful employee for 12 years until his retirement in 2001.
Painting cars, carpentry and woodwoorking, riding and working on motorcycles are only some of the things Dean enjoyed. He also loved spending time with his family and tinkering around on his farm equipment at his ranch at home.
Dean is survived by his wife of 32 years, Renee, of Bend, daughters Jennifer and her husband, Erik, Franks and Kimberly Covey all of Bend, son Ryan Covey of Redmond, Ore., grandchildren Kayla and Parker Franks of Bend, mother Mary Covey of Hood River, Ore., sisters Jessie Edwards of Portland, Ore., Dorothy and her husband Chuck Norman of Parkdale, Ore., Mary Martha and her husband, Bob, of Mt. Hood, Ore., and Becky Bounds of Hood River, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Burley D. Covey, Sr., nephew Jimmy Bowlin, brother-in-law Jim Edwards and dear friend Dan Gehrig.

Frank Lariza
Frank T. Lariza, age 75, of Hood River died on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at his home after a lengthy illness. A Remembrance Reception and Tribute Service are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 26, at Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Connie Lindley
Connie Lindley, age 84, of Hood River died on Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.

Maria Farwig
Hood River resident Maria Antonia Farwig died Aug. 24, 2003, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 98 years of age.
Maria was born April 30, 1905 in La Paz, Bolivia, to Mr. and Mrs. Guillen. She was raised and educated in Bolivia. She then married
Hans Gunther Farwig. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Europe, living in many different countries, but primarily Germany.
Following the death of her husband Mrs. Farwig moved her family back to Bolivia. In 1960 she gained her U.S. Citizenship and moved to America. Maria lived in Boise, Idaho, Portland, Ore., and then Hood River.
She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Farwig loved to read, listen to music, dance, sew and knit. She was a full time mother and spent most of her time caring for all of her family.
Mrs. Farwig is survived by her sons, Rene Farwig of Canmore, Alberta, Canada, and Hans Farwig of Denver, Colorado; eight grandchildren: William (Billy) Farwig, Jr., Renee Lyn Collins, Steven, James and David Farwig, Janet Robins, Johana Leisge and Sonja Wilmot. Ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans Gunther Farwig, her son, William August Farwig, two sisters, two brothers and her granddaughter, Karin Sonja.
Dorothy Zimmerman
Doris Irene McColley Zimmerman, age 75, passed away on Aug. 21, 2003, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 11, 1927, in Glencove, Wash., and graduated as Valedictorian of Vaughn High School. She then attended Washington State College in Pullman, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education with a major in music and minor in history. She began her teaching career in the early 1950s in Bickleton, Washington and then moved to the White Salmon Valley School District.
On Aug, 17, 1952, she married
Thomas A. Zimmerman of White Salmon, where the couple resided for most of their married
life. Doris retired in 1982 after 30 years of teaching, most of which were spent teaching junior high English and girls’ P.E. and coaching junior high girls’ athletics. She was one of the first female referees for high school boys’ basketball.
During her lifetime she was extremely active in many Masonic organizations: International Order of the Rainbow Girls, White Shrine Daughters of the Nile and, for more than 50 years, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the PEO Sisterhood in Chapter AW of Portland, Ore.
She is survived by her two daughters, Helen Watts of Bend, Ore., and Edie Hooker of Seattle, Wash.; brother Roy McColley of Iowa and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Aug. 28 at the White Salmon United Methodist Church. A second service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Rose City Park United Methodist Church, 5830 NE Alameda, Portland.
Remembrances may be made to the White Salmon United Methodist Church, the Estarl Scholarship Fund, Rose City Park United Methodist Church or to the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, 1685 Branham Lane, Suite 227, San Jose, CA 95118.

Mervin Hussey
Mervin O. Hussey, of Umatilla, Ore., died Aug. 21, 2003, at his home. He was 89 years of age.
Mervin was born April 15, 1914, in Mundan, Kan., to John Harrison and Nancy Ada (Randall) Hussey. In the 1930s he married
Bertha Mae Barge in Jerome, Idaho.
Mervin was a career military man in the U.S. Army and served during World War II and the Korean conflict. After his military service he became a farmer. He trained horses and loved being a cowboy.
Mervin is survived by his sons, Jack and his wife Deloris Hussey of Umatilla and Buck and his wife Brenda Hussey of Cascade Locks; daughters, Marge and her husband Ron Johnson of Yakima and Shirley and her husband Bruce Miller of Yakima; brothers, Ben Hussey of Urinton, Nev., Allen (Pete) Hussey of Denver, Colo., and Merril Hussey of Evergreen, Colo.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha Mae in 1987; a daughter, Gin McNeil; his parents; and two brothers, Bill and Carl Hussey.
Graveside services were scheduled for Aug. 27 with Military Honors in the Sunset Hills cemetery in Umatilla. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston handled arrangements.
Nancy ‘Sis’ Hinman
Nancy “Sis” Hinman, age 72, passed away Oct. 8, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center.
She was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Parkdale, Ore., to Leonard and Retha (Howard) Chandler. In 1934, her family moved to Mt. Hood, Ore., where she was raised with her sister and two brothers. On Feb. 12, 1949, James Brown, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Parkdale, married
her and Norman Hinman at the Manse.
Norman and Nancy bought property and raised their four children in Mt. Hood. By 1974 all their children had married
and left home. In 1976, a partnership was made with son, Dale, and his wife to purchase an orchard in the Odell area, where she has lived since. Mrs. Hinman worked at many occupations while raising her family. She packed fruit at Diamond Fruit Company, clerked at Lum and Abner Market in Mt. Hood, cooked one year at Parkdale Elementary School, wrapped meat at Keils and Safeway markets and sold jewelry. In 1977 she decided to stay on the ranch and help her husband.
When asked what her finest accomplishment was, she said raising her children to adulthood. Wherever Mrs. Hinman lived, she had a large yard with flowers and large vegetable garden. She loved to can foods for winter. Nancy enjoyed reading and traveling. For 15 years she watched her 10 granddaughters and three grandsons play Little League baseball and traveled to wherever the All-Star teams played. She enjoyed having her family together at holidays or at any other time. She loved to cook for all occasions, sit down dinners, picnics or a large pot of chili after sledding or snowmobiling. She loved playing with her grandchildren, night sleighing parties and many sleepovers. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
She is survived by two sons, Dale Hinman and his wife, Melinda, and Bruce Hinman, all of Hood River; daughter-in-law Shirley of Hood River; sister Phyllis McDonald of Poulsbo, Wash., and two brothers, Leonard Chandler of Prineville, Ore., and Norman Chandler of Post Falls, Idaho. Nineteen grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and more than 100 nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband Norman in 1995, her son Hugh in 1996, daughter Debby Brosseau in 1977, granddaughter Empiro Brosseau in 1974, her father in 1969, mother in 1999 and grandson Mike Kreeklow in 2000.
Vault entombment will be at Idlewild Mausoleum.

Jean Smith
Former Hood River resident Jean Smith passed away in North Bend, Ore., on Oct. 12, 2002, at the age of 73.
Visitation will be at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 17, with a service following at 1 p.m. at Church of the Nazarene in Hood River. Interment will follow at Idlewild cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bay Area Nazarene Church for enrichment to their music program, at 1850 Clark St., North Bend, OR 97459.

Alan Tucker
Alan Farquhar Tucker, of Vancouver, Wash., died Oct. 8, 2002, at his home. He was 85 years of age.
Alan was born May 9, 1917, in Hood River, Ore. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, and in the Air Force reserves until 1962. He had lived in Vancouver since 1945.
Alan enjoyed woodworking and was the handyman for his neighbors at Meadow Verde in Hazel Dell, Wash. He built his own airplane and was a pilot. He retired in 1975 from his position as production planner for Crown Zellerbach.
Alan is survived by his wife, Constance M. (McAtee) Tucker; three daughters, Frances T. Brent of Maple Valley, Wash., Carol D. Tucker of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Debora T. Brown of Ridgefield, Wash.; three sons, Richard F. Tucker of Jackson, Miss., Thomas A. Tucker of Longview, Wash., and Robert E. Tucker of Reno Nev.; a sister, Priscilla A. Tucker of Hood River, Ore.; a brother, Norman Tucker of Hood River; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Winifred Niemuth.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 18, at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens cemetery.
