William McKelvy
Madras resident William "Wild Bill" Aaron McKelvy died May 20, 2002, at Mountain View Hospital at the age of 71.
Mr. McKelvy was born May 8, 1931, in Emmett, Idaho, to parents Americus Marion and Thelma Nora (Scott) McKelvy. He moved to Madras in 1949 from Idaho, and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954, during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he returned to Madras where he owned and operated McKelvy Farms for many years. He married
Charlene (Harris) McKelvy on Nov. 3, 1954, in Reno, Nev.
He was a member of the Madras Elks Lodge, serving as Exalted Ruler from 1986-1987, and as trustee for many years. He was also a member of the Jefferson County Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, loved his dogs, and spending time visiting with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene McKelvy of Madras; daughters, Cindy Dubisar of Madras, Debbie Jorgensen of Banker City, Vicki McKelvy of Madras, and Erin Green of Golden, Colo.; brother, Richard McKelvy of Madras; sisters, Wilma Mullins of Glen Allen, Miss., and Shirley Marihugh of Arlington, Wash.; mother, Thelma McKelvy of Madras; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., June 5, at the United Methodist Church in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Elk's National Foundation, or Elk's Scholarship Fund. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Phyllis LaRea Moore
Madras resident Phyllis LaRea Moore died May 26, 2002, at Mountain View Hospital at the age of 85.
Mrs. Moore was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Athol, Kan., to parents George and Ruth Sylvia (Moore) Windscheffel. On March 12, 1939, she married
Orin "Babe" Moore at Tule Lake, Calif. The moved to Madras in 1945 from Merrill, Ore., and started the Pum Brick Tile Company, which they operated until their retirement in 1978.
Phyllis was a lady with a fun sense of humor. She enjoyed all children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She began the Teens Against Canter (TAC) group in Madras, and also served as a "big sister" for teens in need of her guidance.
She was also very active in the Madras United Methodist Church since its conception. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, and Eastern Star, where she was voted "Woman of the Year in 1962, and was a leader of Job's Daughters.
She loved to write and for many years wrote a column in the "Sagebrush News." In her spare time she painted and wrote poetry to go along with her paintings. She made upside down storytelling dolls which she used to tell stories to local preschool children. In another sewing effort, she made her own outfits with matching hats to accessorize. She also enjoyed ceramics.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Aurolyn and Walt Wolfe of Madras; grandsons, Ron and Steve Wolfe; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Marissa, McKenzie, McKaelie, and Jacoby Wolfe. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Kenneth Windscheffel.
A graveside service was held June 1, at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras, followed by a memorial service at the Madras United Methodist Church. Memorial donations have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice, or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Jasper Nunally
Madras resident Jasper S. "Jack" Nunally died May 24, 2002, at Mountain View Hospital at the age of 91.
Mr. Nunally was born July 31, 1910, at Eighty-Eight, Kent., to parents Leonard and Oma (Shirley) Nunally. On Dec. 29, 1934, he married
Avaline Spencer at Glascow, Kent. They moved to Madras in 1947 from Fort Klamath, Ore., and Mr. Nunally worked for much of his life as a shop foreman for Warm Springs Lumber. He also worked at the Jefferson County Co-op for 10 years until his retirement on Dec. 16, 1975.
He was very talented in his woodworking skills. He made beautiful tables, jewelry boxes, and hope chests. he was a member of the Madras Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Avaline Nunally of Madras; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Joan Nunally of Grangerville, Idaho; brother, Orville Nunally of Glascow, Kent.; sister, Joy Shive of Edmonton, Kent.; four grandchildren, Debbie Sewell of Pendleton, Randy Nunally of White Bird, Idaho, Kim Martinez of Prineville, and LoLynn Nunally of Ogden, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, and a grandson, Tracy Nunally.
The funeral service was held May 29 at the Madras Church of Christ, with arrangements under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras. Burial was May 31 at White Bird cemetery in White Bird, Idaho.
Louis Rufener
Madras resident Louis F. Rufener died May 30, 2002, of cancer. He was 87.
Recitation of the Rosary was held June 3, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madras. A funeral Mass was held at St. Patrick's June 4.
Louie was born September 24, 1914 in Grizzly, Ore. to Katie and Fred Rufener. He married
Ruth (Brown) Rufener on September 9, 1942 in Dothan, Alabama. A veteran of World War II, he farmed on the Agency Plains from 1946 until he retired in 1976.
He enjoyed the Grizzly timberlands, sawmilling, fishing and hunting, camping with his family and playing bridge with his friends. He was honored as Jefferson County Pioneer King in 1996, and he and his wife were named 2000 Jefferson County Tree Farmers of the Year.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ruth Rufener of Madras; daughters Frances Maddox of Portland, Mary Ann Steele of Redmond, Kathleen Marston of Madras, Virginia McHugh of Missoula, Mont., and Annette Vardanega of Terrebonne; sons Robert of Madras, Raymond of LaGrande, and Ronald of Keizer; sister Nellie Evick of Madras;
31 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Donations have been suggested to Mt. View Hospice or Jefferson County Meals-on-Wheels. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Verda "Sally" Walker
Former Culver and Redmond resident Verda "Sally" Walker died peacefully in her sleep May 11, 2002, at her home in Chubbuck, Idaho. She was 83.
Mrs. Walker was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Smoot, Wyo., to parents Hyrum and Stella Crook. She graduated from high school in 1936 from Idaho Falls, Idaho, and worked for Bethlehem Steel in San Francisco, Calif., during World War II. She was married
to Ralph "Dutch" Walker on Jan. 6, 1944, and moved to Culver in 1947. She was the Culver Postmaster for 20 years and retired in 1978.
Mrs. Walker's special interests included sewing, crafts, reading, walking, and long rides to explore Central Oregon with friends. She also enjoyed writing letters to her friends and family, and never missed a holiday or special occasion.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Tom and Susan Walker of Battle Ground, Wash., daughter-in-law Judy Walker of Pensacola, Fla., and her son, Russ Walker; five grandchildren, Martin, Kendall, Chrissy and Nicole Walker and Stacey Kipp; three great-grandchildren, Lacey and Casey Walker and Nathan Kipp; brother and wife, Everett and Dot Crook; sisters, Betty Lou Maraffio, Ruth Butler, Maxine Sager and husband Bill, Patsy Winterton and husband Ralph; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Walker; brother, Blaine Crook; sisters, Nora Hutchison and Freida White; and her parents.
No services were held at her request.
Joan West
Madras resident Joan "Johnny" Adella West died May 29, 2002, at Aspen Court Senior Apartments at the age of 83.
Mrs. West was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Los Angeles, Calif., to parents Seymour and Nana E. (Shaw) Mallock. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1936. She married
George I. West on Dec. 20, 1939, and in 1946 they moved to Portland, then to Madras in 1955, where they owned and operated Juniper Motel. They retired in 1972, but Johnny went on to work part-time at the Mod O'Day Dress Shop and Hatfield's Department Store.
She was an active lifetime member of the Madras Lady Elks, enjoyed bowling, was an avid sport fisherman and golfer and was known in many golf circles as a "lady that could hit the golf ball further and straighter than most men." In fact, George gave up golf early in their marriage because he couldn't beat her. She was very competitive and could be heard all over the golf course shouting a curse word when she hit a bad shot.
She was a very stylish and beautiful woman who participated in all the local fashion shows. She was active in the Madras United Methodist Church, where she was a member, and enjoyed reading to kids in local schools.
Survivors include her daughter, Georgia Ann Schell of Beaverton; son, Robert S. West of Milton-Freewater; seven grandchildren, Aaron Read, Beth Read, Steven West, Mike West, John West, Paul West, and Angie West. She was preceded in death by her husband George, and brother Robert Rose.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., June 6, at the United Methodist Church in Madras. Final disposition will be private for family members. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to the American Cancer Society or Mountain View Hospice.
Ronald Bender
Aumsville resident Ronald A. Bender died July 19, 2002 at the age of 47.
Mr. Bender was born May 7, 1955, in Stayton, Ore. He graduated from Regis High School, then worked as a saw filer for Frank Lumber Company for 25 years.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity, and also of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cars and livestock.
Survivors include his mother, Bernadine Bender of Sublimity; brothers, Jim of Madras, his twin Ray of Scio, Terry of Scio, Thomas of Aumsville, Alan of Turner, Ralph of Stayton, Larry of Silverton; sisters, Stella Mendenhall of Sublimity, Sheila Foltz of Jordan, Clara Orr of Aumsville, Judy Baughman of Salem, Dorothy Frank of Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 2000.
Rosary service was July 23, and burial Mass was July 24, both at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity. Interment will be in Pioneer cemetery in Jordan, Ore. Memorial contributions have been suggested to St. Mary Grade School, or Right to Life. Weddle Funeral Home in Stayton was in charge of arrangements.
Orena "Nickie" Bone
Culver resident Orena "Nickie" Bone died July 21, 2002, at the age of 74.
Mrs. Bone was born Jan. 18, 1928, in Lapwai, Idaho, where she grew up. She lived in San Francisco during World War II and married
Floyd Bone on Nov. 28, 1961, in Stevenson, Wash. She had lived in Culver since 1960.
She was a member of the Nez Perce Tribe, the Madras Lions Club, and enjoyed people and jokes, reading and doing beadwork.
Survivors include her sons, Ken Tababoo of Portland, Tracy Bone of Culver; daughter, Denise Hennessey of Pennsylvania; sisters, Juanita Spenser and Loretta Antell, both of Lapwai, Idaho; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd in 1997, and son Andre Bone in 2001.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Hospice of Culver. Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Florence Fletcher
Madras resident Florence Margaret Fletcher died July 25, 2002, at the age of 96. Mrs. Fletcher was born March 242, 1906 in Billings, Mont., to parents Frank and Alice Beeman. She was married
to Charles E. Dalton, who preceded her in death. She then married
Lloyd Fletcher, who also preceded her in death.
During World War II, she worked in the shipyard, but went on to work for Fred Meyer Corporation. She moved to Madras 1 1/2 years ago from Klamath Falls to be near her daughter. Her special interests included crocheting, handcrafts and reading.
Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Boyle of Madras; son, Charles Dalton of Portland; grandchildren, Jane McClure of Malin, Ore., James Boyle of Klamath Falls, Donald Boyle of Madras, Dean Boyle of Madras, Carolyn Cohrs of Portland, Susan Dalton of Portland, and Craig Dalton of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husbands, two brothers preceded her in death.
At her request, no formal services will be held and final disposition will be at Willamette National cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Ralph Ward
Ralph Cole Ward died July 17, 2002, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law Douglas and Kathryn Ward of North Powder. He was 80.
Mr. Ward was born April 1, 1922, in Baker to Glenn H. and Hattie Cole Ward. He spent his early life in Upper Burnt River Valley and graduated from Hereford High School in 1940. He attended Eastern Oregon College in LaGrande before entering the Navy in 1943. While in LaGrande, he entered pilot training and became a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a radarman 2C in the Asiatic Theater, where he served aboard the USS Ponganset and USS Candid until 1945.
Following the service, he graduated from Kinman Business College in Spokane and married
Muriel Houle in 1944. They had three sons and were later divorced. In 1961, he married
Betty Warrick Burger. She preceded him in death in 1999.
Mr. Ward was an accountant/comptroller for Boise Cascade at several locations, and was part-owner of Graystone Corporation in Seattle. While in Seattle, he was voted "Boss of the Year" by the Public Building Exchanges Club.
In his later working years, he was an administrative assistant from 1970 to 1975 at St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton, and for nearly 20 years, was the comptroller for Warm Springs Forest Products in Madras, retiring in 1993.
He served in many organizations, was a current member and past Post Commander of the VFW, and served as president of the Kiwanis. His special interests included fishing, especially on the Metolius River, and he enjoyed the company of his pets.
Survivors include his sons, Russell, Doug and his wife Katie of North Powder; sister, Ardie Waters of Baker, and Glenda and her husband John Schaer of Corvallis. He was preceded in death by an infant son, his grandparents, Charles and Fannie Boyer Cole of Hereford, Ore., and O.D. Porter and Elida Parsons Ward of Cleveland, Ohio, his parents Glenn and Hattie Ward, a sister June LaVelle, and a brother Raymond G. Ward.
A graveside service was held July 22, at the Cove, Ore., cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Pathway Hospice or Bethphage House in care of Gray's West and Company, P.O. Box 726, Baker City, OR 97814. Arrangements were under the direction of Gray's West and Co. Pioneer Chapel.
Maryanna Nielsen
Madras resident Marianna Nielsen died Oct. 7, 2002, at the age of 85.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at Bel-Air Chapel in Madras.
