Clyde T. Loffer
Clyde T. Loffer of Yachats, 83, died Dec. 6, 2000 at Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport.
He was born July 4, 1917 in Whitewood, S.D.
He was a graduate of Auburn High School in Auburn, Wash. After graduation, he went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad as a section worker.
He married Mercedes McKinney in 1940.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After returning from the army, he returned to work for Northern Pacific until it was taken over by Burlington Northern. He retired in 1974 after 35 years. At the time of his retirement, he was the second highest-ranked employee at Auburn, with the title of assistant general yardman.
He and his wife moved to Yachats shortly after his retirement, where he enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Mercedes Loffer of Yachats; a brother, Darrell Loffer of Auburn, Wash.; and sisters Alta Walton of Seattle, Wash., Cleda Tuttle of Olympia, Wash., and Reva Broadbent of Auburn, Wash.
At his request, no services are planned. Disposition is by cremation. Bateman Funeral Home is making the arrangements.
Patricia Hill
Patricia Hill, 56, of Maui, Hawaii and South Beach, died of natural causes in her South Beach home on Feb. 8, 2001.
She was born Jan. 20, 1945 to Melvin and Helen Geland Watt in Hillsboro.
She lived in Anchorage, Alaska from 1962 to 1990, where she was employed by the Municipality of Anchorage.
She married Michael Hill in Anchorage, Alaska in 1975.
From 1990 to 2001, she was a resident of Maui, where she was employed in the tourist industry. She moved to South Beach a few months ago.
She was a member of Keawalai Congregational Church in Maui.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Hill; daughters Kimberly Rice-Narusch and Leanne Reed; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. March 11 at the Keawalai Congregational Church in Maui. Disposition is by cremation. Bateman Funeral Home is serving the family.
Walter Alinger
Walter J. Alinger, 83, of Siletz, died May 13, 2001 in Newport.
He was born in Taft on Jan. 25, 1917.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and worked as a logger and high climber.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian L. Alinger, in 1973; and by his stepdaughter, Linda Gault.
He is survived by his wife, Alta Alinger, of Siletz; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Sandra Alinger of Denver, Colo.; stepchildren Jacquelin and Jimmy Fermin of Beaufort, S.C., Tamara and James Green of Madras, Neil and Betty Felix of Puyallup, Wash., and Tom Felix of Bullhead City, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation.
Peggy Lewelling
Peggy Jean Lewelling, 75, of Yachats, died May 16, 2001.
She was born in Oklahoma on Nov. 18, 1925.
For most of her life, she was a homemaker. She also worked for a few years at the Bank of Newport.
She is survived by her sons, Lincoln Grey Lewelling of Toledo, Matthew Todd Lewelling of Yachats, and James Garth Lewelling of Salem; a daughter, Doris Wheeler of Hollister, Mo.; and six grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Eris Porter Lewelling.
Disposition is by cremation. Bateman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Stephen "Steve" Langlot
Stephen J. "Steve" Langlot, 34, of Newport died Dec. 11, 2001, as a result of the capsizing of the fishing vessel Nesika off Yaquina Head. He was lost at sea.
He was born in Seattle, Wash., on June 21, 1967.
He was a commercial fisherman.
He graduated from Inglemoore High School in Bothell, Wash. in 1985.
He began working as a chef but soon began fishing out of Kodiak, Alaska, which he pursued for the past 14 years. He was an avid skater and played for the NW Americans in Lynnwood, Wash.
He leaves two daughters, Breigh Justine and Stephanie Rayanne; his fiancée, Dawn Davis, and a son, Mason, all of Newport; his parents, Vicki and John Langlot Jr. of Kenmore, Wash.; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Shane Scott, and nephews Blake and Derek, all of Wichita, Kansas; a brother, Brian Langlot of McPherson, Kansas, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Newport Fisherman's Wives, PO Box 971, Newport, Ore. 97365 for the children of Steve Langlot.
Claude Elihu Hall, 97, of Newport died at Pacific Communities Hospital on June 18, 2001.
He was born in Marial on Dec. 26, 1903 to John and Elsie (Frye) Hall.
He was a graduate of Oregon State University, and a member of Eta Mu Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Alpha Kappa Pi.
He began a grocery business, Hall's Market, in Waldport in 1929, and later added groceries and other businesses in Newport and Toledo. He was a member of many civic clubs and charities.
He was past director of Meats and Foods Dealers, past president of the Oregon Independent Grocers Association for 10 years, past president of the Lincoln County Fish and Game Association, and past president of the Oregon State Locker Proprietor Association.
He served two terms as mayor of Waldport, served as a member of the Oregon House of Representatives from 1953-1954, and served on the Waldport City Council for 30 years.
He was president of the Waldport Cemetery Association, and served on the World War II draft board for Lincoln County and the Waldport Chamber of Commerce.
He was past director of the Oregon Coast Association, and served seven years on the Lincoln County School District Board of Directors.
He had been named Waldport's first "First Citizen."
He was past president of the first Lincoln County Juvenile Advisory Council, was a charter member and past president of the Waldport Lions Club, was district governor of the Oregon Lions from 1956-57, served 50 years as a director of National Security Bank, was past chairman of the Lincoln County chapter of the American Red Cross, was past director of the State Community Chest, was a founding member of the Council Executive Board for Oregon Trail Council of Boy Scouts, and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to the Boy Scouts in 1961.
He was a charter member of the Toledo Elks Lodge, the Masons, Shrine Club, Eagles and Lions clubs. He was also involved in property management with Westgate Lanes Bowl, Westgate Development, Toledo Investment and his personal property.
He married Elizabeth Hudson in Seattle, Wash., on Nov. 8, 1963.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, of Newport; a son, Claude R. Hall of Eugene; daughters Betty Hobeck of Alta Dena, Calif., and Rosemary Baker of Portland; a stepson, Robert Schaal of Everett, Wash.; brothers Clifford Hall of Newport and Lester Hall of Yachats; a sister, Patricia VanOrden; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Entombment will be Chelan Abbey Mausoleum in Newport. Bateman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
