Else Fay Jordan
Former Madras resident Elsie Fay Jordan, most recently of Dallas, Ore., died Feb. 9, 2006, at Four Season Residential Care at the age of 92.
Mrs. Jordan was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Burr Oak, Kan., one of 10 children of Palmer and Laura (Reed) Weigel. She came to Oregon in 1934 and settled in Independence. She and Harold Joseph Jordan were married July 15, 1937, in Salem. They moved to Powell Butte in 1950, where they owned a farm and raised cattle, hay and potatoes. In 1964, they moved to Madras.
After Harold passed away in 1984, she traveled and wintered in Why, Ariz., for many years. She enjoyed playing pinochle and taking walks.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Dennis and Nancy Jordan of Central Point, Kathryn Lang of Redmond, Karen and Merle Bitikofer of Dallas, Peggy and Eldon Nimmo of Prineville, and Bonnie Downing of Scranton, Pa.; brother, Don Weigel of Bend; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Feb. 14, at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park cemetery in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Doernbecker Children's Hospital in care of the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center at 287 S.W. Washington St., Dallas, OR 97338. Bernice Osterback
Madras resident Bernice Sophia Osterback died Jan. 14, in Madras at the age of 88.
Mrs. Osterback was born July 14, 1917, in Gresham to parents Samuel and Ester (Magnuson) Palmquist. The eldest of seven children, she attended Gresham elementary and high schools.
On June 8, 1939, she married Martin Osterback in Gresham, where they built their first home. In 1951, they moved to a home on five acres in Sandy, where they farmed berries for commercial use. They also helped found Sandy's Assembly of God Church.
She worked at Gresham Box Factory, Jantzen Clothing 7 Sportswear, Dennis Uniform and Timberline RV Manufacturing. She helped establish other Assembly of God churches and was active in music, Christian education and missions. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and gardening.
She and her husband, along with one of her two daughters, moved to Madras five years ago. In 2002, Martin, her husband of 63 years passed away.
Survivors include her daughters, Jan McDonald of Madras, and Julie King of Vancouver, Wash.; sister, Mary Walter of Gresham; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Funeral services were held Jan. 21, at the Sandy Assembly of God Church, followed by graveside service at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Gresham. Arrangements were under the direction of Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Sandy.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to Living Hope Christian Center, A-G Missionary Fund, P.O. Box 707, Madras, OR 97741.

Jack Pichette
Madras resident Jack Oren Pichette died Feb. 6, 2006, at his home at the age of 64.
Mr. Pichette was born Sept. 17, 1941, in McMinnville, to parents Oren and Janet (Erickson) Pichette. He had lived in Madras for the past 20 years, moving here from Creswell, Ore. He was employed as a truck driver for Smith Bear Logging.
His special interests included hunting, fishing and flying kites.
Survivors include his children, Thomas Pichette of Australia, Oren Pichette of Tomah, Wis., and Rene Pichette-Dubisar of Madras; stepchildren, Bob Warken of Detroit Lake, Ore., Linda and Pamela Warken, both of Grand Ronde; sister, Carol Pierce of Creswell; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, at Bel-Air Chapel in Madras. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Lawrence Shike
Warm Springs resident Lawrence J. Shike died Feb. 5, 2006, at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. He was 42.
Mr. Shike was born April 10, 1963, in Redmond to parents Raymond and Charlotte (Brown) Shike. He was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. On May 27, 1996, in Reno, Nev., he married his wife, Norma.
Surivors include his children, Lawrence Jr., William, and Lana Shike, all of Warm Springs; brother, Ray Shike Jr., of Warm Springs; sisters, Helena Jackson, Mina Shike, Sandra Danzuka, and Lana (Shike) Leonard, all of Warm Springs. He was preceded in death by his father, and brother Albert.
A dressing ceremony was held Feb. 8, at the Agency Longhouse in Warm Springs, followed by an overnight service and burial Feb. 9, in Simnasho. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Noema Rae Taylor
Metolius resident Neoma Rae Taylor died Feb. 7, 2006, at her home at the age of 61.
Mrs. Taylor was born Oct. 6, 1944, in Nyssa, Ore., to parents William and Neoma (Barger) Hadley. On Sept. 7, 1963, she married Scott Taylor in Madras. She was a lifetime resident of Metolius, except for the short time she and Scott lived in Portland and Idaho.
She was a member of the Metolius Friends Church, where she was very active. She was involved with the Community Kitchen and Women's Missionary Fund.
She also worked for various farmers throughout the years during the potato harvest. She drove the Head Start school bus for a few years, was active in the Metolius Spike and Rail Days and the PALS Club, and served on the Metolius planning commission. She loved life and enjoyed children. She raised her own two daughters and many others throughout the years.
Survivors include her husband, Scott Taylor of Metolius; daughters, Augusta Davis of Metolius, and Jean and son-in-law Jeff Hinshaw of Spiceland, Ind.; brothers, Buck Garren of Wasilla, Alaska, and Bill Garren of Goldendale, Wash.; sisters, Phyllis Paye of Metolius, Bea Bone and Sue Garren, both of Medford, and Stacy List of Yuma, Ariz.; grandchildren, Isaac, Caleb, Seth and Levi Hinshaw of Indiana and Sierra Davis of Metolius. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Metolius Friends Church, with burial at Gray Butte cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Community Kitchen in care of the Metolius Friends Church.

Loretta Walsh
Madras resident Loretta A. Walsh died Feb. 3, 2006, at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend at the age of 57.
Mrs. Walsh was born March 25, 1948, in Washington to parents Earl and Marion (Morin) Demmon. On June 23, 1979, she and Kenneth Walsh were married in Vancouver, Wash.
She was employed as a certified nurse's assistant for the Emerald Terrace Nursing Home and was a member of the Vancouver United Pentecostal Church. Five years ago, she moved from Hermiston to Madras.
Her special interests included sewing, knitting, crafts, and she took great joy in being with her family.
Survivors include her husband Kenneth Walsh of Madras; daughters, Marion Johnson of Corvallis, Lynn Lopez of Humptulips, Wash.; and Lisa Strutz of Madras; brother, Roy Demmon of Superior, Mont.; sister, Mary Jones of Rainer, Ore.; and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangement are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras.

Wilma Trimble
Madras resident Wilma Trimble died Feb. 6, 2006, at the age of 80.
She will be remembered for her laughter, her beautiful smile and always-quick wit.
Survivors include her children, Bonnie, Don and Cindie; her four grandchildren; and her constant companion, her little dog Tango. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Jack Trimble.
Visitation was at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras and the graveside service was held Feb. 11, at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park cemetery in Madras. Arrangments were under the direction of McHenry Funeral Home.

Betty Ewing
Former Bend resident Betty Fern Ewing died Feb. 15, 2004, at the age of 72.
Mrs. Ewing was born May 27, 1931, in Circleville, Kan., to parents Walter and Delena (Reece) Knouft. She was a graduate of Bend High School and on Aug. 15, 1949, married John Ewing.
Her special interests include going to Reno, Nev., bowling, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include her sons, Gail Swing of Hayward, Calif., and Roger Ewing of Salem; sisters, Patricia Snow of Madras, and Bonny Ewing of Salem, and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001, and her parents.
Funeral services were held Feb. 22, at Niswonger, Reynolds Chapel in Bend. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the American Lung Association, in care go Niswonger, Reynolds Funeral Home, 10 N.W. Irving, Bend, OR 97701.

David Yow
Madras resident David Samuel Yow died Feb. 17, 2004, at his home. He was 62.
Mr. Yow was born July 13, 1941, in Porterville, Calif., to parents Issack and Dessi (Danford) Yow. He was raised in Strathmore, Calif., near Porterville, and graduated from high school there. He married Diana Hailey in Reno, Nev., on Feb. 20, 1963.
Mr. Yow was an excellent mechanic and used his skills working for John Deere in California. He was the foreman on a cattle ranch for a time, and was owner-operator as a commercial truck driver for 25 years.
He lived in California and also in Texas, then moved to Oregon. He lived in the Sweet Home and Lebanon areas for about 25 years, before moving to Central Oregon in 1995, where he has lived in Culver, Antelope, and Madras.
His special interests included fishing, boating and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Yow of Madras; son, Ben Yow of Ashwood; daughters, Stephanie Gallagher of Madras and Jeannie Bierlie of Randal, Wash.; sister, Joy Oaklay of Porterville, Calif.; and brothers, Don Yow of LaPine, Gene Yow of Reno, Nev., and F.D. Yow of Springfield; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, and two grandsons.
A private service will be held at 1 p.m., March 6, at his home. Autumn Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Aitken
Madras resident Donald James Aitken died Nov. 5, 2007, at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend following heart bypass surgery. He was 78.
Mr. Aitken was born in Bend on Jan. 15, 1929, the son of George E. and Mary Grace (Cyrus) Aitken of Sisters. He attended schools in Sisters and graduated from Redmond High School. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953, after working in a gas station on the family property in Sisters.
Following his service in the Army, Mr. Aitken worked for Leonard Lundgren Lumber Company of Bend. His work eventually lead him to Rapid City, S.D., where he oversaw the construction and early management of Rushmore Lumber Company. He met Drucilla (Bartlett) Aitken, while working at Leonard Lundgren Lumber Company, and they married in 1957.
In 1958, he returned to Portland Oregon, where he owned and operated a service station. In 1959, he moved to Madras and worked for Miller Lumber and Copeland Lumber Yards before starting his own business, Madras Builders Center, in 1966 with Wayne Gilbertson. He was later joined by partner, Gary Jones. After 40 years, the business was sold and he retired.
Since retiring, Mr Aitken enjoyed spending time with his extended family. He and his wife had recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.
During his life in Madras he served on the boards of the Jefferson County School District, Mountain View Hospital and the Columbia River Bank. He was known for his generous donation of materials to many local organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Drucilla Aitken of Madras; his brother, Kenneth Aitken, 90, of Bakersfield, Calif.; his son, Kevin Aitken and daughter-in-law, Judy Hart; his grandson, Brandon Aitken; his exchange daughter from Norway, Tove Tvedt Skarstein; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Services were held Nov. 12, at the Madras United Methodist Church, and the graveside service was Nov. 13, at the Mount Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to the American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization (for the research and education of breast cancer), or the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

William Henry Crews, Jr.
Former Madras resident William Henry "Bill" Crews, Jr., died Oct. 31, 2007, at the age of 96.
Mr. Crews was born on the family's homestead on March 4, 1911, the oldest of nine children. His parents, W.H. and L. Edna, homesteaded 10 miles northeast of Madras in 1910. He went to school at Mud Springs School and Field School (on Hay Creek Road). He attended and graduated from Madras Union High School in 1931, where all his siblings also attended and graduated.
After graduation, he worked as a farmhand on a wheat and cattle ranch until his early 20s. He spent nearly a year in the Civilian Conservation Corps before moving to Hood River to work in the fruit harvest.
There he met and married Mary Alice Lewis in 1937. They had three children, Nancy, Marilyn and James. He managed his 10-acre fruit orchard and during WWII, also managed the orchard belonging to the Nakamura family.
Mr. Crews then learned the trades of carpentry and cabinetmaking and worked on many homes in the Hood River area until he retired in 1981.
After his wife's death in 1980, he married Josephine Foster, to whom he was married six years until her death on Oct. 24, 1987. He later married Lola Nelson on April 23, 1988. They lived at the Hawks Ridge retirement community and were married 19 years until she passed away on Aug. 19, 2007. He subsequently moved to Marysville, Wash., to live with his son.
Mr. Crews loved to play cards and was a member of the Hood River Elks Lodge for several years. He was also a longtime blood donor at the Red Cross. He got much pleasure from watching and feeding wild birds wherever he was living.
He is survived by two sisters, Lauretta (Lotti) Schmitt of Beaverton, and Ann Jerald of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Nancy Young of Bellevue, Wash., Marilyn Richardson and her husband Lloyd, of Tacoma, Wash.; and one son, James Crews and his wife Diane, of Marysville, Wash.; stepchildren Ken Nelson and Lauree Winfield and her husband Bill. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wives Mary, Josephine, and Lola, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph and Frances (Pluto), and four sisters Eulalie, Iva, Olive and Mona.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Nov. 15, at Hood River Church of the Nazarene, 2168 Belmont Dr., Hood River, Ore., where both Bill and Lola were members for many years. .
