Bent
Maxwell T. Bent, 90, of Hubbard died April 19, 2003.
Born Dec. 15, in 1912, in Portland, he was a machinist. He spent 12 years working as assistant Clackamas County Parks superintendent. He was a longtime member of the Bethany Evangelical Free Church.
His interests included crafting, building and traveling, having visited places like Australia and Nova Scotia.
He married Lola M. Luckey July 9, 1938; she preceded him in death.
Survivors include his brother, Philip E. Bent of Port Angeles, Wash.; daughters, Susan C. Russell of Mount Lake Terrace, Wash., Karen M. Harvey of Port Townsend, Wash.; Ruth L. Bent of Hubbard; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, David, and a brother, Hudson.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. April 25 in Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn. Interment will be in Hubbard cemetery, Hubbard.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn.

Breck
Donald Lee (Alspaugh) Breck, 63, of Salem died April 15, 2003.
Born Oct. 13, 1939, in Oakland, Calif., he worked as a truck driver, heavy equipment operator and a musician. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Keizer.
Survivors include his companion, Kay Carpenter of Woodburn; sons, David Lee Alspaugh of Portland; daughters, Kimber Alspaugh Bowden of Roseburg; brothers, Woody Alspaugh of Stockton, Calif., Lanier Alspaugh of Stocomb, Ala., mother, Berniece Alspaugh of Hartford, Ala.; and two grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held.
Arrangements were by City View Funeral Home, Salem.
Contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Willamette Valley or a charity of choice.

Schomus
WOODBURN -- Ethel Marie Schomus, 88, of Woodburn died Aug. 25, 2003.
Born Feb. 18, 1915 in St. Louis, she was the daughter of Alphonse and Theresa Vanderbeck.
She married Cyril Schomus in 1937 and they lived in St. Louis until his death in 1987.
She is survived by her sons, John of Woodburn, Bob of Venice, Calif., and Tom of Salem; daughters, Kathleen Schaffner and Rita Foltz of Woodburn, Patricia Harris of St. Paul and Ann Bryant of Keizer; sister, Theresa Marks of Woodburn; brother, Wilbur Vanderbeck of Marquam; 26 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A recitation of the rosary was held Aug. 28.
A funeral mass was held Aug. 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gervais.
Interment was at St. Louis cemetery.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Father Taaffe Foundation or Sacred Heart School.

Steffensen
WOODBURN -- George McCoy Steffensen, 87, of Woodburn died Aug. 25, 2003.
Born Jan. 11, 1916 in Walla Walla, Wash.
He graduated from Centralia High School and later earned an associates degree from Centralia Community College. In 1939 he went to work for the Census Bureau in Washington, D.C. helping to complete the 1940 census. He then spent a year working for the fire department before joining the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Centralia where he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad for 17 years. In 1966 he moved to Portland where he worked for U.S. Forest Service as a computer programmer, retiring in 1978. After retirement he moved to Woodburn Senior Estates where he was a member of the Senior Estates Golf and Country Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was also a charter member of the Golden Squares and enjoyed the outdoors, traveling and gardening.
He married Florence Davidson in December 1940.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Kathi Steffensen of Woodburn; son, Eric Steffensen of San Jose, Calif.; sisters, Phyliss Gensman of Centralia, Wash., and Janet Gentry of Seattle; four grandchildren.
An informal gathering in honor of George will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 30 in the auditorium of Woodburn Senior Estates.
Arrangements are by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Krantz
Dan L. Krantz, 53, of Aurora, died June 20, 2004.
Born Nov. 20, 1950 in Missoula, Mont., he grew up in Montana, graduating from Seeley Swan High School in Seeley Lake, Mont., and attended the University of Montana.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era and retired in 1993 after 20 years as a staff sergeant.
He lived in Washington, Germany and Arizona while serving in the U.S. Army and moved to Aurora when he retired.
He had worked as a steel cutter and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, the outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren.
He married Loretta Bartnes-Butler on May 28, 1977 in Lincoln City.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta of Aurora; mother, Judith Lease of Richmond, Va.; children, Shane Krantz of Richmond, Va., Erin Krantz of Aurora, Chad Krantz of Aurora; brothers, Gary of Spokane, Kelly Krantz of Tacoma, Ted Lease and Milt Lease of Deer Lodge, Mont., Gary Lease of Yakima, Wash., John Lease of Ellensburg, Wash., Dennis Lease of Missoula, Mont.; sister, Amy Carter of Albany; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 25 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel.
Interment will be private.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Lopez
Nieves R. Lopez, 77, of Gervais, died June 21, 2004.
Born Aug. 5, 1926 in Asherton, Texas, she moved to St. Paul in 1956, then to Gervais in 1970, to California in 1991, and back to Gervais in 2000.
She was a member of the Catholic Church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and crocheting.
She married Jesus Lopez in 1943 in Natchez, Miss. and they made their home in Texas.
She is survived by her husband, Jesus Lopez of Gervais; children, Lucia Bustamante of Gervais, Ernestina Perez of San Jose, Calif., Jesus Lopez of Gervais; brother, George Ruiz of Texas; sisters, Josephina Cruz and Lidia Martinez both of Texas; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held June 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Interment followed at St. Paul cemetery.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Simpson
Eleanor C. Simpson, 82, of Woodburn, died Nov. 8, 2004.
Born Oct. 27, 1922 in Scio, she grew up in the Gervais/St. Louis area and attended Gervais High School.
She married Charles Simpson on April 11, 1944 in Salem. They made their home in the Woodburn area and she worked as a secretary and clerk for the State of Oregon -- Department of Motor Vehicles and MacLaren School for Boys in Woodburn.
She attended Catholic Church and her hobbies included knitting, sewing, cooking, cross word puzzles and world events.
She is survived by sons, Charles and Dennis Simpson of Salem; daughters, Carol Simpson of Salem and Diana Simpson of Woodburn; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering was held Nov. 12 at the family home in Woodburn.
Private interment will be at Willamette National cemetery.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Johnson
Aleda Marie Johnson (Reitan), 90, of Woodburn, died Nov. 9, 2004.
Born Nov. 1, 1914 in Webster, Wis., along with her husband she owned restaurants and commercial real estate and the Tonapah Water Company in Phoenix, Ariz.
She moved to Cascade Park Retirement Center in Woodburn three years ago. Formerly from Perham, Minn., she had homes on Ottertail Lake, Minn., Minneapolis and in Mesa, Ariz.
She married Arnold Johnson in Minneapolis. He preceded her in death Feb. 18, 1996.
She and her husband traveled around the U.S. extensively throughout their married lives.
She is survived by two nephews, Les Reitan of Woodburn and Mark Reitan of Portland.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Smith
Theresa Marie Smith (Bernard), 89, of Woodburn, died Nov. 9, 2004.
Born Nov. 30, 1914 in Verboort, Ore. to Frank and Charlotte Vanloo-Bernard. She grew up in the St. Paul area and attended school in St. Paul. She lived on a farm in the Gervais/Mt. Angel area after her marriage. She retired and moved to Woodburn.
She was a homemaker and member of St. Luke Catholic Church and the Gervais Garden Club.
She married Joseph Smith Nov. 25, 1937 in St. Paul. He preceded her in death in 1982.
She is survived by sons, Gary Smith of Salem, Terry and Larry Smith, both of Mt. Angel; brothers, George and Bert Bernard of St. Paul; sisters, Frances Grassman of Canby, Dorothy Keppendahl of Portland; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A rosary service was held Nov. 12.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Nov. 13 at St. Paul Catholic Church.
Vault interment will follow the mass at St. Paul Catholic cemetery.
A reception will be held at the Fr. Rubis Hall following the interment in Woodburn at St. Luke's Parish.
Arrangements are by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.
Contributions may be made to St. Paul cemetery or Mt. Angel Abbey.
