John 'Jack' M. Evey
July 26, 1924 - April 10, 2002
John ”Jack” M. Evey of Bend died Wednesday after an extended illness. He was 77.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Bend. A burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
Mr. Evey was born July 26, 1924, in Crystal Lake, Ill. He attended Eastern Illinois University. He married
Wilma Guthrie on June 10, 1948, in Sidell, Ill. He graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in agriculture extension.
He served in as a communications specialist flying between India and China in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Evey worked as assistant extension for Polk County. He then worked as a co-owner of Stover, Evey and Jackson, a appliance sales and service business in Corvallis. He moved to Bend in December 1993 to be near family.
He was affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis and First Baptist Church in Bend. He was a member and past president of the Corvallis Kiwanis and Corvallis Library Board. He was also a member of the Corvallis Model Railroad Club and Oregon Kidney Association. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. He received a volunteer of the year award for service at the Good Samaritan Hospital.
Survivors include his two sons, John of La Jolla, Calif., and Roger of Morro Bay, Calif.; two daughters, Sue Hoyt and Jane Teater, both of Bend; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation or the Elevator Fund for First Baptist Church.

Georgia M. (Elliott) Spencer
Dec. 8, 1915 - April 8, 2002
Georgia M. (Elliott) Spencer of Redmond died Monday of natural causes at her home. She was 86.
A memorial service will be held at noon Friday at the Community Presbyterian Church in Redmond with Pastor Rob Anderson officiating.
Mrs. Spencer was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Butte, Mont., to Harry and May (Kennedy) Elliott. She married
Edwin Spencer on April 26, 1936, in Aberdeen, Wash.
She worked as a legal secretary for Harol Turner in Walnut Creek, Calif. She was promoted to office manager and retired. She moved to Redmond in 1998.
Mrs. Spencer was affiliated with the Community Presbyterian Church in Redmond. She was a member of the Legal Secretaries Association. She enjoyed spending time with her family and the neighborhood children and gardening.
Survivors include her daughter, Jo Rogers of Redmond; two brothers, Harry Elliott of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Gordon Elliott of Merced, Calif.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband.

Edward Henry Behm
Jan. 20, 1926 - April 6, 2002
Edward Henry Behm of Bend died Saturday at his home. He was 76.
A private service will be held.
Mr. Behm was born Jan. 20, 1926, in New York City to Ernest and Mildred (Adelson) Behm. He married
Dolores ”Dee.”
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Behm worked as a sheet metal fabricator in the aircraft industry. He lived in Bend for several years.
Survivors include his two sons, Bradford of Bottineau, N.D., and Robert of Bend; a daughter, Bonnie Pierce of Bend; a sister, Rose Napier of San Diego; and numerous grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife.

Totsy Marguerite Amundson
July 17, 1920 - April 7, 2002
Totsy Marguerite Amundson of Bend died Sunday of natural causes. She was 81.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cascade Terrace Clubhouse in Bend.
Mrs. Amundson was born July 17, 1920, in Louisiana. She married
John Amundson on April 27, 1979, in El Cajon, Calif.
She owned and operated a lampshade shop in El Cajon, Calif. She moved to Central Oregon in the late 1980's.
Mrs. Amundson was affiliated with Westside Church in Bend. She enjoyed spending time with her family and going to church.
Survivors include her husband of Bend; a son, Terry Hart of Tualatin; a stepson, John Rodney of Washington; two daughters, Betty Jean Quinlan of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Barbara Mantor of Orange, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Karen Jo Brinkman of Sarasota, Fla.; a brother, Bobby Kellogg of Shreveport, La.; a sister, Carman Barton of Shreveport, La.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and sister.

Leland Harold Bacon Sr.
Aug. 23, 1915 - April 7, 2002
Leland Harold Bacon Sr. of Terrebonne died Sunday of natural causes at his home. He was 86.
A private service was held.
Mr. Bacon was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Judith Gap, Mont., to Mark and Edna (Jackson) Bacon. He married
Dorothy on June 14, 1940, in Vancouver, Wash.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Bacon worked as a heavy equipment driver for a highway construction company in Woodburn. He then worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 10 years in Northern Idaho. He moved to Central Oregon in 1990 and worked for the USFS in the senior work program.
He was a member of the Teamsters Local 324 in Salem and Redmond American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, flowers and tinkering.
Survivors include his wife of Terrebonne; three sons, Mark of Terrebonne, Leland Jr. of Sandpoint, Idaho and Ralph ”Lonnie” of Salem; a daughter, Debra Jean Hurlburt of Terrebonne; a brother, Warren of Redmond; three sisters, Lola Perrin of Coos Bay, Betty Breasaw of Grangeville, Idaho and Bonnie Clark of Terrebonne; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Emil P. Evensen
Feb. 4, 1940 - April 5, 2002
Emil P. Evensen of Bend died Friday of natural causes. He was 62.
A service was held.
Mr. Evensen was born Feb. 4, 1940, in Fort Bragg, Calif. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1965 with a bachelor's of science degree. He married
Ann Harbert on March 17, 1962, in Estacada.
He worked as a commercial fisherman. He moved to Bend in 1969. He worked for Owl Pharmacy in Bend as a pharmacist and in 1973 became the owner and operator of Newport Pharmacy.
Mr. Evensen was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Bend Golf and Country Club. He was a past member of the Lions Club and the Mountain View High School Booster Club. He enjoyed camping, hunting, the outdoors, Oregon State and the 49ers football teams and Dixieland jazz music.
Survivors include his wife of Bend; three daughters, Ashley of Vancouver, Wash., Kirsten of McCall, Idaho and Meredith Evensen-Lynch of Sand Point, Idaho; a sister, Leanne Riegal of Redmond, Wash.; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Vere 'Mac' Alvin McCarty
April 10, 1917 - March 24, 2002
Vere 'Mac' Alvin McCarty of Salem died March 24 after a period of debilitation due to strokes. He was 84.
A service was held.
Mr. McCarty was born April 10, 1917, in Condon to Elijah and Alice McCarty. He worked on his family's wheat ranch as a teen-ager. He married
Marie Garrow on Dec. 27, 1941, in Portland.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1936 and was stationed in Hawaii. He served on the Yangtze River Patrol in China and was on the crew of an expedition to photograph a solar eclipse in the South Pacific. He then served as a bombardier on a B-24 crew in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was stationed in England during World War II. He flew 30 missions over Europe and earned the rank of captain and two Distinguished Flying Crosses.
Mr. McCarty worked for the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs and moved to Keizer in 1952. He became the Director of the Service Division of the Oregon DVA and developed programs to assist veterans with many of their needs. He retired in 1978.
He was affiliated with the St. Vincent parish. He was active with the Boy Scouts and led several fifty-mile hikes in the Cascade Mountains. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, carpentry, children and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of Salem; six sons, Thomas of Mt. Angel, Douglas of Wolcott, Vt., David and Kevin, both of Bend, Paul of Salem and Chuck of Portland; a daughter, Kathleen LaMear of Portland; two sisters, Lois Bryant and Vesta Eaton; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Myrtle J. (Friesen) Meeker
Oct. 6, 1938 - April 5, 2002
Myrtle J. (Friesen) Meeker of Redmond died Friday of natural causes. She was 63.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Redmond Memorial Chapel with Carrol McIntosh officiating.
Mrs. Meeker was born Oct. 6, 1938, in Rock Springs, Wyo., to Alva and Bessie (Binning) Friesen. She married
Edwin Meeker.
She moved to Redmond in 1946. She owned and operated a feed store in Redmond for many years.
Mrs. Meeker was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed working with animals and reading.
Survivors include her daughter, Trina Brotherton of Silverton; father of Culver; and a sister, Anna Marie Watson of Spanaway, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
