Barbara Jean Horn
1941-2004
Barbara Jean Horn, a 20-year resident of Drain, died Dec. 28 at the age of 63 from ovarian cancer.
She was born to Kenneth and Fredia (Hester) Crow in Bernie, Mo., on Oct. 27. 1941.
She earned an associate degree at Lane Community College.
She worked as a homemaker and a banker at Douglas National Bank.
She enjoyed playing the piano, flower gardening, going to the beach and ocean and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Drain Church of Christ and the Yoncalla Church of Christ.
She also lived in Medford, Olympia, Wash., and Eugene.
She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Crow.
She is survived by her mother: Fredia Marie Peterson of Cottage Grove; her brother: Randy Crow of Brea, Calif.; her sons: Michael Burk of Riverside, Calif.; Todd Tinnes of Drain; Gabe Horn of Boise, Idaho; and Jared Horn of Drain; her daughters: Hester Christensen of Boise, Idaho, and Joya Martini of Veneta; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to Boise Bible College in Boise, Idaho.
Allen Andrew Stroud
1911-2004
Allen Andrew Stroud, a former resident of Cottage Grove, died Friday at the age of 93 from age-related causes.
He was born to John and May (McCaslin) Stroud in Scotland, Ark., on March 16, 1911.
He finished the 12th grade and then served in the U.S. Army.
He moved to Cottage Grove in 1950 where he lived until moving to Eugene in 1998.
He worked as a custodian at Cottage Grove High School and worked for the City of Cottage Grove.
He enjoyed gardening, hunting and bird watching.
He was a member of the Church of Christ on Pennoyer in Cottage Grove.
He received the American defense award and one Bronze Star.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Willie Stroud, J.C. Stroud, Weldon Stroud, Tillman Stroud, Dewey Stroud and Raymond Stroud.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
No service is planned. Arrangements were made through Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart Hospital.
Sterling "Stub" Bolton
1926-2004
Sterling "Stub" Noah Bolton, of Redmond and formerly of Cottage Grove, died Dec. 24 of Parkinson's Disease. He was 78.
He was born to Sterling Abram and Margaret (Johnson) Bolton on April 10, 1926, in Cottage Grove.
He married Evelyn Mae Atwood on Oct. 15, 1949, in Reno, Nev. She died on June 8, 1996. He then married Juanita Brown on June 21, 1997, in North Bend.
He lived in Cottage Grove for 30 years until 1956, in North Bend from 1956 to 1988 and in Redmond from 1988.
He graduated from Cottage Grove High School in May 1944 and later attended the University of Oregon.
He was a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 91st Reconnaissance Squad, during World War II.
He worked for Elkside Lumber Co. in Lakeside and for the Columbia River Log Scaling Bureau before going to work for Weyerhaeuser Co. in forestry management, where he worked for more than 25 years until he retired in 1988. After retiring he moved to Redmond, where he worked part-time for Mr. Jones Warehouse.
He enjoyed hunting, collecting coins and woodworking, and he loved spending time with his family and his dogs.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in North Bend, the Powell Butte Christian Church and the Weyerhaeuser Ambassadors.
He is survived by his wife: Juanita Brown Bolton; three daughters: Christine Bolton of Redmond, Beatrice Bolton of Culver and Kathleen and husband Michael Kinkade of McMinnville; three sons: Kenneth and wife Connie Bolton of Bend, Leonard and wife Julie Bolton of Eugene and Benjamin Bolton of Redmond; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel with visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.
Inurnment will be at Fir Grove Cemetery.

Richard Gillespie
1920-2004
Richard Davis Gillespie, of Cottage Grove, died on Dec. 15 at the age of 84.
He was born in January 1920 in Chicago, Ill., and grew up in Los Angeles.
He graduated from UCLA in 1940 and served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1968, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. In World War II he participated in the Burma Run in 1942 and Over the Hump in 1944.
He and his wife, Gene, were married in 1957. They moved to Cottage Grove in 1979.
He is survived by two nephews: Gordon and his wife Tricia Gillespie and Gary Gillespie; two great-nephews: Blake and Bryan; and a sister-in-law: Betty Gillespie.
He established many relationships during his years in Cottage Grove and enjoyed working with and helping his friends. He had a passion to share knowledge and set an example for those around him.
A memorial service was held at the Church of London. England's Eugene Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
