Glenn Tolliver Stewart

Glenn Tolliver Stewart of Bend died Sunday of natural causes. He was 83.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 at First Missionary Baptist Church, 21129 Reed Market Road, Bend. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at Pilot Butte cemetery.
Mr. Stewart was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Kirkwood, Ill., to Thomas and Lena (Slagle) Stewart. He married
Emma Eitenmuller on Mar. 4, 1994, in Pekin, Ill.
He served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Stewart worked for Cascade Natural Gas for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife Emma; two sons, Tom of Bend and Robert of Port Orchard, Wash., and a daughter, Beverly, of Bend.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Margaret Maggie' Evelin Underwood
September 1923 - July 23, 2003
Margaret "Maggie" Evelin Underwood of Brooklyn, N.Y., died July 23 of a stroke. She was 79.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 63175 18th St., Bend.
Mrs. Underwood was born in September of 1923 in Budapest, Hungary, to William and Alvina Mallows. She married
Donald Underwood in Nov., 1994, in Washington.
Survivors include her husband of Brooklyn; three sons, Don of Bend, Chris of Kingston, Wash., and Bill of Mesa, Ariz.; three daughters, Connie Olson of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Charlotte Dougherty of Bend and Jodie Bailey of Kailua-Kona; a brother, Bill Mallows of Shelton, Wash.; a sister, Helen Beihl of Shelton; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Paul Philip Halpin
July 25, 1937 - July 25, 2003
Paul Philip Halpin of Bend died July 25 of natural causes. He was 66.
No service will be held.
Mr. Halpin was born July 25, 1937, in Springfield, Ill., to Michael and Dora (Matthes) Halpin. He grew up in Glendale, Calif., and graduated from Glendale High School. He earned a law degree from the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law.
He was hired by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in 1964 and worked as a prosecutor for 39 years. He won convictions in the Onion Field and Nightstalker murder cases in Los Angeles. He retired in 2001 and moved to Bend.
Mr. Halpin was a member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited and the Elks Lodge.
He enjoyed horseback riding, sailing and playing the trombone. Mr. Halpin also enjoyed reading historic literature.
Survivors include his two daughters, Cydney of New York City and Debie Loftus of Green Valley Lake, Calif.; three sisters; and two grandchildren.

Verna Mae Kauffman
Sept. 1, 1906 - July 27, 2003
Verna Mae Kauffman of Madras died Sunday of natural causes. She was 96.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Kauffman was born Sept. 1, 1906, in Carlotta, Calif., to Leo and Mae Rutledge. She married
R.C. Kauffman on March 26, 1927, in Eureka, Calif.
She worked at We's Men Store, McCaulou's Department Store, Hatfield's and Satterlee Jewelry. She also drove a school bus for the Jefferson County School District.
Mrs. Kauffman was a 4-H leader and member of the CowBelles. She also served as past president for the Lady Elks and was a member of the Mud Springs Grange.
Her hobbies included cooking and playing bridge. She also enjoyed helping others and entertaining friends.
Survivors include her three sons, Eugene of Yuba City, Calif., Robert of Evergreen, Colo., and Bill of Bend; six grandchildren; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and four sisters.

Lyle 'George' Watts
Feb. 8, 1928 - July 27, 2003
Lyle "George" Watts of Redmond died Sunday of natural causes. He was 75.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Redmond followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Redmond Memorial cemetery.
Mr. Watts was born Feb. 8, 1928, in Oakland, Calif. He married
Elizabeth on Dec. 30, 1999. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the Oregon College of Education.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged.
Mr. Watts moved to Central Oregon in 1951 and worked as a teacher, coach and referee for the Redmond School District for 35 years. He spent summers managing the Ray Johnston Park Pool.
He served as past president of the Oregon Pheasant Breeders Association and was named Redmond Citizen of the Year.
His hobbies included gardening and breeding exotic pheasants, quails and doves. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of Redmond; a son, Brian of Boise, Idaho; four daughters, Chris Platt of Redmond, Susan Richey of Enoch, Utah, Julie Posekany of Mill City and Terri McClaflin of Eugene; a sister, Dorothy Johnson of St. George, Utah; 20 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son and his parents.

Oscar Charles Davies Jr.
April 1, 1925 - July 25, 2003
Oscar Charles Davies Jr. of La Pine died Friday of natural causes. He was 78.
No service will be held.
Mr. Davies was born April 1, 1925, in Fairmont, Minn., to Oscar Sr. and Edna (Swearingen) Davies.
He served in the Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. He married
Dolores Yakes on July 17, 1949, in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Mr. Davies was employed as a structural engineer. He retired in 1992 and settled in La Pine in 1993.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was also a licensed pilot.
Survivors include his wife of La Pine; two sons, Bob of Beaverton and Brian of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Sharon McGrady of Christmas Valley; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Virda Young Allred

Virda Young Allred of Prineville died July 17 of natural causes. She was 92.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 11 at the Hailey cemetery in Hailey, Idaho.
Mrs. Allred was born March 29, 1911, in Gannett, Idaho. She attended high school in Gannett and graduated from the Twin Falls School of Business. She married
S. Earl Allred.
She worked as the city clerk for the city of Hailey, Idaho, and served as a Justice of the Peace until retiring in 1973.
Mrs. Allred was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and playing cards.
Survivors include her son, Donald of Park City, Utah; a daughter, Lois Waters of Paicinas, Calif.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, two daughters and a grandson.

John Harvey
March 7, 1931 - July 25, 2003
John Harvey of Bend died Friday of natural causes. He was 72.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Deschutes Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Harvey was born March 7, 1931, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to John and Romona (Berkhimer) Harvey. He earned his doctorate degree from Texas A & M University.
He served in the Air Force.
Mr. Harvey was a chemist and a bioscientist.
He was affiliated with the Missionary Baptist Church in California.
He enjoyed music, painting, languages and philosophy. He also enjoyed cooking and writing.
Survivors include his two sons, Karl and Calvin, both of Florence; a daughter, Beckey McGhee of Charleston, S.C.; his mother; a sister, Clara Harris of San Antonio; and one grandchild.
