Charlene M. Hedick

Charlene M. Hedick of Bend died Tuesday of natural causes. She was 77.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Bend.
Mrs. Hedick was born June 2, 1925, in Gainesville, Texas, to Charles and Arlene (Shaw) McKinley. She married
Joe Hedick in San Antonio.
She worked as a librarian for the federal government.
Mrs. Hedick was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church. She was a supporter of volunteer and relief organizations.
Her hobbies included painting and gardening.
Survivors include her daughter, Joey VanBlokland of Bend; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul or Central Oregon Hospice.

Jay C. Foster
Nov. 8, 1946 - May 24, 2003
Jay C. Foster of Prineville died May 24. He was 56.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bend Pentecostal Church of God with Pastor Richard Hargreaves officiating.
Mr. Foster was born Nov. 8, 1946, in Hardin, Mont., to Benjamin and Verna (Barrett) Foster. He married
Montana "Kay" Marks on June 18, 1965, in Hardin.
He moved to Oregon in 1967. He graduated from Eugene Bible College in 1977 with a bachelor's degree.
He lived throughout Oregon before moving to Bend in 1982. He pastored the Bend Pentecostal Church of God until 1994. He moved to Las Vegas in 1994 but returned to Prineville in 2001 where he owned an adult foster care home.
Mr. Foster served as youth pastor, associate pastor, interim pastor and presbyter for the Pentecostal Church of God in the Cascade Section.
He enjoyed riding motorcycles, driving and traveling.
Survivors include his wife of Prineville; two sons, James of South Korea and Charles of Alfalfa; three daughters, Montana Pool of Prineville, Verna Heiges of Powell Butte and Virginia Fillmore of Bend; three brothers, Paul of Coos Bay, Ben of Siletz and Fred of Alfalfa; two sisters, Iva Bentley of Keizer and Alice Pierzina of Oakridge; and 21 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Pioneer Memorial Home Health and Hospice.

Orval Clinton Avey
Jan. 10, 1918 - May 27, 2003
Orval Clinton Avey of La Pine died May 27 of natural causes. He was 85.
An inurnment service will be held at 1 p.m. July 5 at La Pine Community cemetery.
Mr. Avey was born Jan. 10, 1918, in Tulsa, Okla., to Dexter and Ida (Lucas) Avey.
He served in the Navy during World War II. He married
Marguerite Foley on Dec. 31, 1945, in Long Beach, Calif.
Mr. Avey worked as an oil field driller for 62 years. He retired in 1980. He was affiliated with the La Pine Community Church. He was also a member of the Operating Engineers Union #12 and AFL-CIO. Mr. Avey was a resident of La Pine for 22 years.
Survivors include his wife of La Pine; two daughters, Nancy of Portland and Roberta Johnson of Dublin, Calif.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Marguerite Imajean Welton
Oct. 4, 1917 - May 27, 2003
Marguerite Imajean Welton of Bend died May 27 of natural causes. She was 85.
A service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Welton was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Miami, Okla., to Abe and Carrie Mae (Reese) Hildreth. She married
Charles Welton on Jan. 18, 1935, in Pampa, Texas.
She and her husband raised racing quarter horses for 22 years. She lived in Pasa Robles, Calif., where she worked as a nurse's aide and cook before moving to La Pine in 1980. She moved to Bend in 1992.
Mrs. Welton was a member of the Highlights Christian Church in La Pine. She had served as a missionary in migrant camps in Coalinga, Calif.
Her hobbies included cooking, painting in pastels and oils and raising flowers and vegetables. She also enjoyed the Gospel.
Survivors include her daughter, Patty McKinney of Prineville; two sisters, Betty Covalt of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sue Kinney of Alva, Okla., five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sons, a daughter and her parents.

William Harold Cope
Aug. 21, 1921 - May 29, 2003
William Harold Cope of Bend died Thursday of natural causes. He was 81.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Niswonger, Reynolds Chapel.
Mr. Cope was born Aug. 21, 1921, in St. Clarasville, Ohio to Harold and Sarah (Neff) Cope. He grew up in St. Clarasville and attended college at Cal-State Northridge in California. He married
Amelia "Molly" Behrsin on June 24, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mr. Cope worked as a carpenter, machinist and chemist. He moved to Bend in 1988.
He was a member of the Model A Club of Central Oregon, Old Car Club of Central Oregon and the High Desert Harmoneers. He also formed the Central Oregon Studebaker Club. Mr. Cope enjoyed playing the piano and banjo and building his own homes.
Survivors include his wife of Bend; a son, James of Bend; five brothers, Richard of Maui, Hawaii, David of Ohio, Ellis of Wadsworth, Ohio, James of Forsythe, Mont., and Jerry of Toldeo, Ohio; two sisters, Betty Moullet of Miles City, Mont., and Joanne Speece of Willoughby, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, parents and a sister.

Leslie Leiber Peyton
June 11, 1905 - May 28, 2003
Leslie Leiber Peyton of Culver died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 97.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Peyton was born June 11, 1905, in Cartersville, Ill., to Oscar and Kate (Powell) Peyton. He moved to Oregon in 1908 and graduated from high school in Klamath Falls. He attended Oregon Agricultural College for two years. He married
Helen Mason.
Mr. Peyton worked in the real estate, savings and loan and business finance industries. He lived in Portland from 1934 to 2000. He moved to Culver to be near his family.
He was a past president of the Oregon Savings and Loan League and served on the board of directors of the United Fund. He was also a member of the Portland Home Builders Association, Portland Sales and Marketing Association and a life trustee of Lewis and Clark College.
Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Jo Powell of Culver; a brother, Calvin of Medford; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, two brothers and his parents.

Violet Grace (Thomas) Wilson

Violet Grace (Thomas) Wilson of Redmond died Thursday. She was 67.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Redmond Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Wilson was born Jan. 30, 1936, in Hartington, Neb., to Charles and Grace Thomas. She earned her general education diploma from Central Oregon Community College. She married
Gary Wilson on Jan. 4, 1958, in Reno, Nev.
Mrs. Wilson worked as a cook at Redmond High School for 20 years. She retired in 1991. She lived in the Redmond area for 45 years.
Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, reading and playing card games. She also enjoyed the outdoors.
Survivors include her husband of Redmond; three sons, Doug of Redmond, Ron and Roger of Crooked River Ranch; two brothers, Keith Thomas of Medford and Don Thomas of Lebanon; four sisters, Jean Rumelhart of Springfield, Joyce Callagan of Eugene, Joan Pierce of Eugene and Darlene Beard of Klamath Falls; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

William Charles Harting
Nov. 26, 1908 - July 25, 2003
William Charles Harting of Bend died July 25 of natural causes. He was 94.
No service will be held.
Mr. Harting was born Nov. 26, 1908, in Sumner, Ill., to Homer and Sarrah (Turner) Harting.
He moved west after high school and joined the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch and Wild West Show in Livingston, Mont., where he worked in several films with Buck Jones. He then joined the Undercover Prohibition Department of Iowa and worked there until the end of Prohibition, joining the Treasury Department thereafter. Mr. Harting left to attend the Mackey School of Mines in Reno, Nev., followed by service in the Army during World War II.
After World War II, Mr. Harting moved to Alaska and did contract construction work for the Army. He retired in 1972 and moved to Bend. He married
Nadine in 1982.
He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Lodge and the Moose Lodge of Reno, Nev.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He wrote eleven novels.
Survivors include his wife of Bend; and stepson, Marty Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, a son and a daughter.
