Stanley Owen Wartenbee Jr.
Aug. 28, 1944 - May 22, 2003

Stanley Owen Wartenbee Jr. of Redmond died May 22 of cancer. He was 58.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Redmond followed by a potluck.

Mr. Wartenbee was born Aug. 28, 1944, in Milbank, S.D., to Stanley and Mavis (Morrison) Wartenbee. He attended school in Veneta and graduated from Elmira High School. He married Deanna Bowman in 1964 in Elmira.

He worked for Souse Bros. in Coos Bay loading barges for two years. He then worked at local mills in the wood products industry and later worked for Hap Taylor and Sons for five years.

Mr. Wartenbee was a member of the American Legion.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed horses, farming and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of Redmond; a son, Michael of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Tonya McKiernan of Newberg and Keri Reiss of Redmond; his father of Scio and his mother, Mavis Jurries of Veneta; a brother, Dwight of Elmira; a sister, Darlene Olson of Veneta; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stan Wartenbee Memorial Fund, c/o Hap Taylor and Sons, P.O. Box 83, Bend 97701.

Maggie M. Phelps
Nov. 23, 1912 - May 24, 2003

Maggie M. Phelps of Winston died May 24 of natural causes. She was 90.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Deschutes Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Phelps was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Worth, Mo., to Allen and Edna (Marrow) Hardwick. She married Henry Phelps on Aug. 6, 1929, in Greeley, Colo.

She worked as a cook and waitress in Madras and Terrebonne for 34 years. She also worked at the Dillard Steak House.

Mrs. Phelps moved to Winston in the late 1980's.

Survivors include her son, Charles of Roseburg; a brother, Glen Hardwick of Cheyenne, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, granddaughter, three brothers and four sisters.

Deschutes Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rena (Loy) Burns
Oct. 30, 1928 - April 1, 2002

Rena (Loy) Burns of Bend died Monday of natural causes. She was 78.

A service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Burns was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Chicago. She married George Burns in 1959 in Chicago.

She was a homemaker. She moved to Bend in 1987.

Mrs. Burns enjoyed camping, walking on the beach, collecting rocks, riding with her son on his Harley and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her two sons, George of Colorado and Jim of Sturgis, S.D.; two daughters, Georgana Nelson of Bend and Rena Weeks of Milwaukie; a brother, James Loy of Hampton, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Central Oregon Humane Society.

Nancy Patricia (King) Bristow
May 29, 1937 - March 15, 2002

Nancy Patricia (King) Bristow of Bend died March 15 of Alzheimer's at Cascade View Nursing Home. She was 64.

No service will be held per her request.

Mrs. Bristow was born May 29, 1937, in Corvallis to Elvis and Vina King. She married James Bristow in 1957 in Prineville.

She was a millworker. She retired in 1997.

Mrs. Bristow was affiliated with the Grace Baptist Church in Bend. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, quilting, traveling and her cat, Beau.

Survivors include her son, Lee of Prineville; a daughter, Kim Burger of Redmond; father of Bend; two brothers, Charles King of Beaverton and Mike King of Bend; a sister, Nancy Quackenbush of Powell Butte; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and mother.

Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Isabel (O'Neill) Mack
Nov. 19, 1948 - March 27, 2002

Isabel (O'Neill) Mack of Bend died March 27 of cancer. She was 53.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 20 at Deschutes Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mack was born Nov. 19, 1948, in Los Angeles. She graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1970. She married Jerry Mack in 1991 in Bend.

She worked for Hughes Aircraft. She retired. She moved to Bend in 1990.

Mrs. Mack was a past officer of CASR and was a member of the Central Oregon Street Rods and McIntosh Computer Club. She enjoyed art, literature, music, needlepoint, African Violets, traveling, hot rods and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband of Bend; two stepdaughters, Teri Lynn Anderson of Palm Dale, Calif., and Sheri Sides of Marrero, La.; mother, Isabelle O'Neill of Terrehaute, Ind.; and a brother, Frank O'Neill of Boston.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bend-La Pine, St. Charles Cancer Care, 2500 NE Neff Road, Bend 97701 or Ronald McDonald House.

William 'Bill' John Haavisto
Feb. 3, 1908 - March 30, 2002

William ”Bill” John Haavisto of Bend died Saturday of natural causes at an adult care facility. He was 94.

A memorial service will be held in Long Beach, Wash., in August.

Mr. Haavisto was born Feb. 3, 1908, in Clinton, Ind., to John and Elsa (Lindberg) Haavisto. He married Elsie Rasmus in October 1936, in Aberdeen, Wash.

He worked in the coal mines in Montana as a teen-ager. He worked as a commercial fisherman and trained for the Olympics in Aberdeen, Wash. He ran and placed fifth in the 5,000-meter race in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. He withdrew because of injury. He married Kathryn Graham. He moved to Bend in 1999 to be near his son.

Mr. Haavisto enjoyed music, dancing and playing the fiddle in a senior citizens group.

Survivors include his son, William of Redmond; three daughters, Linda Lentz of Vancouver, Wash., Esther Hartshorn of Kennewick, Wash., and Mary of Puyallup, Wash.; a sister, Elsa Lentz of Aberdeen, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and four siblings.

Loran Bud' E. Atkins
July 14, 1920 - May 27, 2003

Loran "Bud" E. Atkins of La Pine died Tuesday of natural causes. He was 82.

An inurnment service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vernonia Memorial cemetery.

Mr. Atkins was born July 14, 1920, in Birkenfeld to Earl and Marie (Simmons) Atkins. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Bonita "Bonnie" Nelson on June 7, 1987, in Farwell, Mich.

Mr. Atkins worked as a buyer for Crown Zellerbach. He was also deputy sheriff in Columbia County. He served on the city council of Vernonia and was the mayor there for several terms.

He enjoyed mining, fishing and wintering in Arizona.

Survivors include his wife of La Pine; two sons, Earl of Hillsboro and Charles of southern California; two daughters, Marie Tillman and Joyce Watson, both of Reno, Nev.; three stepchildren; seven grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberry Hospice of La Pine, 51681 Huntington Rd., La Pine 97739.

Opal Mearl Nelson
May 18, 1910 - May 29, 2003

Opal Mearl Nelson of Bend died Thursday of natural causes. She was 93.

An entombment will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood cemetery Mausoleum followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Eastmont Church in Bend.

Mrs. Nelson was born May 18, 1910, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Claud and Annie (Lookiebill) Gant. She graduated from Good Samaritan Nuring School in 1932.

She worked as a registered nurse for St. Charles Medical Center for many years. She retired in 1975.

Mrs. Nelson was a founding member of Eastmont Church. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross and a long-time member of the Order of the Easter Star.

She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her son, Jim Jensen of Bend; a brother, Claud Gant of Milwaukie; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first, second and third husbands, James Bechill, Grant Jensen and Gordon Nelson, two brothers and a sister. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Oregon Hospice, 2698 NE Courtney Dr., Bend 97701 or the Eastmont Church Building Fund, 62425 Eagle Rd., Bend 97701.
