Christy Ellen (Anderson) Brindle Steck
Nov. 9, 1909 - May 17, 2001
Christy Ellen (Anderson) Brindle Steck of Prineville died Thursday of natural causes. She was 91.
Viewing will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Prineville Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Juniper Haven cemetery in Prineville.
Mrs. Brindle Steck was born Nov. 9, 1909, in Boville, Idaho, to Addison and Elizabeth (Robertson) Anderson. She was a 1927 graduate of Springfield High School.
She married
Robert Brindle in 1930 in Portland. He died March of 1972. She met Fay Steck in 1972 and they married
Dec. 4, 1973. They moved to Prineville a short time afterwards to live at Ochoco Lake. He died in 1983.
Mrs. Brindle Steck was a member of the Prineville Camera Club Lookout Mountain Grange, The High Desert Museum, Central Oregon Audobon Society, High Desert Native Plant Chapter, The Prineville Orchid Society, Portland Audobon Society and the Forest Grove Camera Society.
She was an instructor of Birds and Wildflowers for Portland Community College and gave many nature programs for schools, childrens' groups and garden clubs. She continued her nature classes for the Central Oregon Community College. She also helped catalog wildflowers for the High Desert Museum and helped the U.S. Forest Service identify plant species.
Survivors include her brother Arly Anderson and sister Elizabeth Ferguson both of Portland.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.

Ray Laniel Rogers
Dec. 30, 1917 - May 13, 2001
Ray Laniel Rogers of Bend died May 13 of natural causes. He was 83.
The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Hall in Bend.
Mr. Rogers was born Dec. 30, 1917, in Luck, Wis., to Walter and Bertha Rogers. He grew up in Kansas and Missouri. The family moved to Portland when he was 16, and he apprenticed with the Union Pacific Railroad as a machinist-mechanic.
He served in the Navy on the USS Antietam during World War II.
After the war, Mr. Rogers worked for the Postal Service delivering special delivery mail and for the Bonneville Power Administration.
In 1956 he and his wife Bertha and family moved to Hermiston, where he began working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They moved to Orofino, Idaho, in 1969, where he worked as an inspector during the construction of Dworshak Dam.
After a divorce, he moved to Eugene in 1970, and then moved to Bend in 1977 after retiring.
He married
Imogene Kurtz in 1981 in Salem.
In Hermiston, Mr. Rogers was a Sunday school superintendent at First Methodist Church and district governor of Toastmasters International. In Eugene he became active in the Eugene-Springfield Singles and served as president. He was an active life member of the VFW, the Eagles and Moose Lodges and other charitable organizations.
He invented the 'What's Trump' cube for pinochle and bridge.
Survivors include his wife, Imogene of Bend; two daughters, Carolyn Rogers of Beaverton and Barbara Harris of Canby; one stepdaughter, Janis Robertson of Vancouver, Wash.; one stepson, Mark Kurtz of Las Vegas; one brother, Gail of Coulee Dam, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Lola Beatrice Resler
March 15, 1927 - May 17, 2001
Lola Beatrice Resler of Bend died May 17 at a Bend adult care facility. She was 74.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tumalo Baptist Church at 63850 Old Bend Highway. Burial will follow at Pilot Butte cemetery in Bend.
Mrs. Resler was born on March 15, 1927, in Hitchcock, Okla., to Clellie Edward and Mable Pearl (Stewart) Huffman. She moved to the Dalles in 1952 and lived there until the early 1970s, when she moved to Alaska. She returned to Oregon in May 2000 settling in Bend near her daughter.
Mrs. Resler was of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed traveling, wildlife, fishing and people. She always wanted to please.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Coogan of Bend; one son, Melvin Resler of Fairbanks, Alaska; three sisters, Mary Theo Grimsley of Springfield, Minnie Winifred Coil of Venus, Texas, and Velma Elaine Hendon of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Jum Huffman and Joe Huffman, both of Glendale, Ariz. and John Huffman of Farmington, N.M.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Resler was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Delbert and Clyde Huffman, and her parents.

Robert M. Ocklind
March 31, 1925 - May 16, 2001
Robert M. Ocklind of Bend died of natural causes at his home on May 16. He was 76.
The memorial service was held May 19 at Greenwood Memorial cemetery in Bend. Mr. Ocklind was cremated and his remains will be inurned at Juniper Haven cemetery in Prineville.
Mr. Ocklind was born March 31, 1925, in Eugene to Earl L. and Euna Roberta (Roberts) Ocklind. He grew up in Eugene and the Willamette Valley, and attended high school in Creswell. He went to work in sawmills in the Willamette Valley.
Mr. Ocklind retired from the Redmond plywood plant in 1986.
He married
his wife, Bonnie, on July 4, 1977. Mr. Ocklind was a member of the Church of Christ of Latter-day Saints, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, the outdoors and rock hounding. He was formerly active in a Rock Hound club.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; two daughters, Lorie Hildebrand of Santa Clara, N.M., and Angie Ocklind of Chalis, Idaho; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a special friend, Bonnie Dotson of Bend.

Lawrence 'Larry' Joseph Smazal
Sept. 9, 1920 - May 17, 2001
Lawrence 'Larry' Joseph Smazal of Prineville died Thursday. He was 80.
Viewing will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Whispering Pines Funeral Home. The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mill Creek cemetery. The Rev. Steve Uffleman will officiate.
Mr. Smazal was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Blenker, Wis., to Joseph and Emma (Brozek) Smazal. He attended school in Blenker.
He went to work in the shipyards in Oregon. He then was a milk delivery man.
He married
Irene Foemmel on Dec. 16, 1944, in Portland.
Mr. Smazal and his wife returned to Wisconsin, where he worked at the Hercules Rocket Powder plant in Baraboo, Wis. They moved back to Oregon and he worked in Bridal Veil from 1946 to 1958. He then worked for Snyder Farms. They moved to Prineville, where he worked for Coin Millwork for 25 years. He retired from Coin Millwork as a rip-saw operator in 1986.
He was a member of the Lookout Mountain Grange No. 741 and the Episcopal Church.
Mr. Smazal enjoyed yard work, gardening, farming, singing, bird watching and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Irene of Prineville; two daughters, Bobbi Hornbeck of Prineville and Casey Smazal of Halifax, Vt.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers and food, memorial contributions may be made to Pioneer Memorial Hospice or the Senior Center Meals on Wheels.

Gertrude Alexander
Aug. 24, 1923 - May 17, 2001
Gertrude Alexander of Conley, Ga., died Thursday. She was 77.
The visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Pope Dickson & Son Morrow Chapel in Morrow, Ga. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Drive Chapel with the Rev. Robert Dial officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Alexander was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Laurinburg, N.C.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis; six daughters, Belle Flowers of Fort McCoy, Fla., Kitty Jensen of Bend, Linda Perkins of Morrow, Lois Stratton of Jacksonville, Fla., Betty Siebold of Orlando, Fla. and Edith Alexander of Stockbridge, Ga.; three sons, Clyde Watson of Jacksonville, Fla., William Watson of Forest Park, Ga. and Gerry Watson of Newnan, Ga.; one sister, Ruth Sessoms of Gibson, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Lawrence Albert Lawson
July 19, 1928 - May 16, 2001
Lawrence Albert Lawson of Bend died Wednesday at St. Charles Medical Center. He was 72.
At his request, no public service will be held.
Mr. Lawson was born July 19, 1928, in Benkleman, Neb., to Lawrence and Neva (Woods) Lawson. He grew up there and in Kansas and Colorado before coming to Oregon for work during the Depression.
He served in the Army Air Corps in the 1940s for three years near the end of World War II. He received an honorable discharge and a letter of commendation from President Harry Truman.
Following his service, Mr. Lawson went to work with his father for Lane County in the shops in Springfield. He also worked for a private auto repair shop. He later moved to Bend, where he owned and operated Lawson Brothers Garage.
He married
Tracy Carpenter on March 30, 1990, in Winnemucca, Nev.
Mr. Lawson was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and held several offices, including lodge governor.
He enjoyed working on cars, and once built an award-winning race car. He also enjoyed watching boxing and races on television.
Survivors include his wife, Tracy of Bend; one son, Rick of Pleasant Hill; his mother, Neva of Bend; and two brothers, Del of Bend and Bob of Kona, Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his father and an infant sister.

Perham Franklin Hockett
Feb. 1, 1921 - May 18, 2001
Perham Franklin Hockett of Bend died of heart failure Friday. He was 80.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Light & Life Free Methodist Church.
Mr. Hockett was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Fairbury, Neb.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He married
Loretta Miller on March 26, 1949, in Kelso, Wash.
Mr. Hockett was a former employee of Bendix in McMinnville before retiring in 1985.
He was a Christian who was married
for 57 years.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta of Bend; four daughters, Rebecca of Salem, Theresa of Eugene, and Paula Myers and Katherine Leppin, both of McMinnville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
