Leola May Rose
June 13, 1912 - May 21, 2001
Leola May Rose of Bend died Monday. She was 88.
The private burial was held at Pilot Butte cemetery in Bend.
Miss Rose was born June 13, 1912, in Prineville, to Enos and Delora Rose.
She attended Crook County schools until moving with her parents to Bend in the mid-1920s. She graduated from Bend High School in 1931.
Before her graduation, she began work as a secretary to the Bend High principal. She then became an office manager for Bend Auto Parts and worked there for more than 30 years until the firm closed. She then went to work at Miller Lumber Co. and Central Oregon Pumice in 1966. She retired in 1982.
She is survived by one nephew, Robert Lindsay of Redmond; one grandnephew, Richard Lindsay of Bend; one grandniece, Jean Lindsay Michael of Potomac Falls, Va.; and a great-grandniece.

Arnold Monroe Bowman
June 25, 1930 - May 19, 2001
Arnold Monroe Bowman of La Pine died as the result of an accident Saturday. He was 70.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the American Legion in La Pine.
Mr. Bowman was born June 25, 1930, in Portland, to Herbert and Lucy Bowman.
He served in the Marine Corps.
He married
Janet Wallace on July 1, 1950.
They resided in Dallas and Long Beach, Calif., before moving to La Pine five years ago.
Mr. Bowman was employed as a chief corrections officer in Polk County, and retired as a sheriff's deputy.
He was affiliated with the Christian Missionary Alliance as well as the American Legion.
Mr. Bowman enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, auto restoration and riding his motorcycle. He also enjoyed being an all-around volunteer handyman for his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Janet of La Pine; three sons, Paul and Duane, both of La Pine, and Gordon of Temecula, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion in La Pine.

Lola Beatrice Resler
March 15, 1927 - May 17, 2001
Lola Beatrice Resler of Bend died May 17 at St. Charles Medical Center. She was 74.
The service was held Tuesday at Tumalo Baptist Church. Burial was at Pilot Butte cemetery in Bend.
Mrs. Resler was born on March 15, 1927, in Hitchcock, Okla., to Clellie Edward and Mable Pearl (Stewart) Huffman. She moved to the Dalles in 1952 and lived there until the early 1970s, when she moved to Alaska.
She returned to Oregon in May 2000, settling in Bend near her daughter.
Mrs. Resler was of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed traveling, wildlife, fishing and people.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Coogan of Bend; one son, Melvin Resler of Fairbanks, Alaska; three sisters, Mary Theo Grimsley of Springfield, Minnie Winifred Coil of Venus, Texas, and Velma Elaine Hendon of Houston; three brothers, Jum Huffman and Joe Huffman, both of Glendale, Ariz., and John Huffman of Farmington, N.M.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Delbert and Clyde Huffman, and her parents.

Don Alden Mellott
April 11, 1931 - May 21, 2001
Don Alden Mellott of La Pine died of complications from pneumonia Monday. He was 70.
A private service will be held.
Mr. Mellott was born April 11, 1931, in Ariola, Colo., to Henry and Myrtle Mellott.
He served in the Army from 1951 to 1956.
He married
Patricia Plueard in 1955, in Cottage Grove.
They lived in Springfield from 1954 to 1990. They then moved to La Pine.
Mr. Mellott worked as a prefitter in door manufacturing at Clearfit Door Co. until retiring in 1982.
He was a member of union local No. 2750 for 45 years. He also was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and was baptized in 1995.
Mr. Mellott was a sharpshooter who enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and being outdoors with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia of La Pine; five daughters, Teresa Gates of Creswell, Maria Jolley of Yoncalla, Loretta Mosby of Missoula, Mont., Rosetta Riley of Springfield and Roberta Edwards of La Pine; one son, Patrick of Eugene; two brothers, Robert of La Pine and James of Springfield; and four sisters, June McAdams of Junction City, Gertrude Nitcher of Yuma, Ariz., Eve Mattoon of Gaston and Darlene Bostick of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Angelene Brown, and one brother, Elton Brown.

Chuck Henry Vertz
Dec. 11, 1927 - May 12, 2001
Chuck Henry Vertz of Monument died May 12 of natural causes. He was 73.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Prineville Funeral Home.
Mr. Vertz was born Dec. 11, 1927, in Little Bear, Wyo., to Samuel and Ava (Tucker) Vertz. He was raised in Canby and later moved to Brooks.
He married
Dolores Ramey in Feb. 1948, in Vancouver, Wash.
They moved to Salem where Mr. Vertz owned and operated two Richfield Service Stations. He also worked for several auto dealers in the Willamette Valley and in Hermiston. They later moved to Terrebonne where he worked as a mechanic for Central Oregon Irrigation District until retiring in 1989, at which time they moved to Monument.
Mr. Vertz was a member of the Service Employees International Union No. 503.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and rock hounding.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores of Salem; one son, Dennis of Stayton; one daughter, Sharon Combs of Vale; three sisters, Hazel Gilbert of Portland, Marian Davidson of San Pablo, Calif., and Dorothy Skyoon of Whale Cove; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

Robert L. Pieper
June 9, 1935 - May 14, 2001
Robert L. Pieper of Gooding, Idaho died May 14 at St. Lukes in Boise, Idaho. He was 65.

Mr. Pieper was born June 9, 1935, in Warroad, Minn., to Art and Mayme Pieper. He was raised in Warroad.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War.
He married
Carole Bishop on June 25, 1965, in Michigan.
They lived in Bend for over 30 years before moving to Idaho seven years ago.
Mr. Pieper enjoyed hunting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Carole of Gooding, Idaho; two sons, Wayne of Chicago, Ill., and Fred of Gooding, Idaho; two daughters, Ronda McFarlane of Roosevelt, Minn., and Rochelle Vine of Gooding, Idaho; one brother, Fred of International Falls, Minn.; one sister, May Meeker of Warroad, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bill and Don.

Alida 'Lucky' Grindle
Jan. 6, 1926 - April 28, 2001
Alida 'Lucky' Grindle of Sun Valley, Nev., died April 28 at her home following an extended illness. She was 75.
Services were held on May 4 in Nevada. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Grindle was born Jan. 6, 1926, in Lincoln, Neb.
She lived in Bend from 1947 to 1982 before moving to Sun Valley, Nev.
Mrs. Grindle was a member of the Bend Eagles Auxiliary.
She enjoyed rodeos, elk hunting and horseshoes, for which she garnered the ladies Nevada State championship. She also enjoyed her life and family.
Survivors include two sons, Calvon Gideon of Athol, Idaho and Gary Johnson of Bend; two daughters, Ronda Gentry of Sparks, Nev., and Janice Williams of Sun Valley; one brother, Bob Daniels of Boonville, Calif.; two stepdaughters; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
