Joseph Fassel
Feb. 16, 1913 - May 19, 2001
Joseph Fassel of Bend died May 19 at a local care facility. He was 88.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, Calif. Interment will follow there.
Mr. Fassel was born Feb. 16, 1913, in Yugoslavia to John and Anna Fassel.
He came to the United States at the age of 7.
They settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. At 17, he returned to Yugoslavia with his family for two years and then came back to the United States.
He married
his wife, Hazel, on Nov. 14, 1936, in Newport, Ky. She died in 1982.
Mr. Fassel was a baker by trade.
He came to Bend to live near his daughter.
Mr. Fassel enjoyed walking.
Survivors include two daughters, Lois Thompson of Bend and Paula Ferguson of Oxnard, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Kevin Michael Ryals
April 26, 1959 - May 20, 2001
Kevin Michael Ryals of La Pine died Sunday. He was 42.
The service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Ryals was born April 26, 1959, in British Columbia.
He was employed as a warehouse supervisor.
He married
Kathy Taylor on Feb. 9, 1980.
Mr. Ryals enjoyed fishing, camping and hiking. He also enjoyed his truck.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Lyons; two daughters, Melissa of Prineville and Sarah of Turner; his mother, Sharon Paulsen of Salem; two brothers, Mark of Eugene and Brian of La Pine; one sister, Margaret of Salem; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilson.

Leona Belle (Clevenger) Puckett
Oct. 1, 1907 - May 22, 2001
Leona Belle (Clevenger) Puckett of La Pine died Tuesday of natural causes. She was 93.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Klamath Memorial Park Chapel in Klamath Falls.
Mrs. Puckett was born Oct. 1, 1907, in Tacoma, Wash.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and traveling.
Survivors include two daughters, Bessie Hustead of La Pine and Pauline Ballantyne of Klamath Falls; one son, Richard of Salinas, Calif.; one sister, Evelyn De Avilla of Anchorage, Alaska; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Walter, and two sisters, Mave and Elizabeth.

May Lillian Johnson
May 22, 1920 - May 17, 2001
May Lillian Johnson of Portland died May 17 in Oregon City. She was 80.
The service was held May 21 at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland.
Mrs. Johnson was born May 22, 1920, in Warba, Minn.
She moved to Portland in 1947 and worked for the Postal Service for 21 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1980.
She was a part-time resident of Bend.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Karren; three sons, Randy Mann, Thomas Joyce and Lewis Joyce Jr.; one sister, Thelma Quinnell; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Skyline Memorial Gardens was in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Shirley Beneda
Oct. 21, 1915 - May 10, 2001
Margaret Shirley Beneda of La Pine died May 10 after an extended illness. She was 85.
Interment was at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene.
Mrs. Beneda was born Oct. 21, 1915, in Woodland, Wash., to James and Rose (Jennings) Shirley.
She married
Everett Beneda in Belton, Texas.
After World War II, they farmed in Kansas and moved to Creswell, and then to Springfield. They moved to La Pine in 1978.
Survivors include her husband, Everett of La Pine; one brother, Herb Koller of La Pine; and one sister, Rae Ellen Heck of Eagle, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bend-La Pine.

Vera (Derrick) Lyle
Dec. 1, 1910 - May 23, 2001
Vera (Derrick) Lyle of Prineville died of natural causes Wednesday. She was 90.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at the 'Heritage Chapel' at Prineville Funeral Home with burial following at Juniper Haven cemetery.
Mrs. Lyle was born Dec. 1, 1910, in Summit, Idaho, to William and Myrtle (George) Derrick. She moved to Fossil as a child and graduated from Fossil High School in 1916. She attended two years of college at Western Oregon Normal School and graduated in 1928 with a degree in teaching. She taught school in Fossil, Twickinham and Spray before retiring in 1949.
She married
Kenneth Lyle in 1945, in Fossil. He died in 1976. They moved to Prineville in 1950.
Mrs. Lyle was a member of the Prineville First Baptist Church and taught child evangelism, Sunday school, and was involved with the mission program.
She enjoyed her family, evangelism, and supporting Christian Ministries, especially the Billy Graham Crusade.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth and William, both of Prineville, and Lanny of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; one brother, Edwin Derrick of Fossil; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Deborah L. (Collins) Keller
Dec. 15, 1956 - May 21, 2001
Deborah L. (Collins) Keller of Portland died Monday at her home. She was 44.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Niswonger, Reynolds & Tabor Funeral Home in Bend. The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Niswonger, Reynolds & Tabor Chapel. Interment will follow at Deschutes Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Keller was born Dec. 15, 1956, in Bend.
She married
William 'Duffy' Keller on Aug. 24, 1994, in Redmond. He died in 2000.
Mrs. Keller worked at Bend Millworks for 10 years. She moved to Portland and went to work in highway construction.
She enjoyed fishing, camping, and the time spent at Detroit Lake with her husband.
She is survived by two sons, Ty Rule of Salem and Justin Rule of Bend; one sister, Karen Unverzagt of Bend; three brothers, Michael Ivie of Redmond, Gregg Collins of Athena and Jeff Ivie of Spokane, Wash.; her father, Vernon Collins, and stepmother, Jerri, both of Athena; two stepsisters, Teresa and Rhonda; and four stepbrothers, Kenny, Ron, John and Bill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, mother and two brothers.

Robert L. Pieper
June 9, 1935 - May 14, 2001
Robert L. Pieper of Gooding, Idaho, died May 14 at St. Luke's in Boise, Idaho. He was 65.

Mr. Pieper was born June 9, 1935, in Warroad, Minn., to Art and Mayme Pieper. He was raised in Warroad.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He married
Carole Bishop on June 25, 1965, in Michigan. They lived in Bend for more than 30 years before moving to Idaho.
Mr. Pieper enjoyed hunting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Carole of Gooding, Idaho; two sons, Wayne of Chicago, and Fred of Gooding, Idaho; two daughters, Ronda McFarlane of Roosevelt, Minn., and Rochelle Vine of Gooding; one brother, Fred of International Falls, Minn.; one sister, May Meeker of Warroad; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bill and Don.
