Ernest Sprague
May 19, 1915 - March 30, 2001
Ernest Sprague of Bend died Friday of natural causes. He was 85.
Viewing will be held today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Sprague was born May 19, 1915, in Maiden, Mont.
He worked as an electrician at Stauffer Chemical Co. of California. He retired in 1980.
He married
Naydene Lowe on Nov. 15, 1941, in Billings, Mont.
They have been Bend residents for 20 years.
Mr. Sprague was a member of the First Christian Church of Newport Avenue as well as a member of the Bend Masonic Lodge and Bend Eagles. He also attended the Redmond and Prineville Masonic lodges.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was also an avid reader and coin collector.
Survivors include his wife, Naydene of Bend; three daughters, Dena Vegil of Taos, N.M., Cheryl Carefoot of Bend and Naylene Brekka of Hermiston; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital.

David W. Beaver
May 24, 1942 - March 29, 2001
David W. Beaver of Culver died Thursday. He was 58.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gray Butte cemetery in Madras. A memorial service follow at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Metolius Friends Church. Pastor Jeff Nagell will officiate.
Mr. Beaver was born May 24, 1942, in Bend to Troy and Margaritte (Colley) Beaver. He was a lifelong resident of Central Oregon.
He was employed by Central Oregon Water District as a ditchrider.
Mr. Beaver was a member of the Metolius Friends Church and enjoyed working with the youth.
He also enjoyed fishing and Culver High School sports events.
Survivors include two sisters, Sharon Duncan of Long Creek and Connie Rushing of Albany; and stepsister, Sharon Andrason of Albany.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil Telford.

Rosemary 'Rose' Sommerset
June 14, 1945 - March 31, 2001
Rosemary 'Rose' Sommerset of Redmond died Saturday. She was 55.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Salem.
Mrs. Sommerset was born June 14, 1945, in Salem.
She married
James Sommerset in 1983.
Mrs. Sommerset worked at the Fairview Training Center and at several nursing homes. She had worked at the Salem Wal-Mart as a cashier. She moved to Redmond and was working as a customer service manager at Wal-Mart.
She served in the Oregon State Defense Force.
Survivors include her husband, Jim of Redmond; two daughters, Lynette Kinion and Jean Peters, both of Salem; two sons, Douglas Peters of Keizer and Ken Sommerset of Redmond; three brothers, Edward, William and Thomas Salchenberg, all three of Salem; sister, Dorothy Pickerell of Salem; and five grandchildren.

Charlotte (ONeill) Cortese
Feb. 9, 1923 - April 1, 2001
Charlotte (ONeill) Cortese of La Pine died Sunday of natural causes at St. Charles Medical Center. She was 78.
A memorial will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Prairie House in La Pine.
Mrs. Cortese was born Feb. 9, 1923, in Trenton, N.J., to George and Clara Kelly.
She moved to La Pine in 1991.
She enjoyed cats, bingo, reading and her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Kerekesh of La Pine; three sons, Kelly and Shane ONeill, both of La Pine, and John ONeill of East Brunswick, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George.

Delmar I. 'Dick' Kanne
June 11, 1918 - March 30, 2001
Delmar I. 'Dick' Kanne of Salem died Friday of Parkinson's disease. He was 82.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
Mr. Kanne was born June 11, 1918, in Canby.
He served in the Air Force during World War II.
He married
his wife Patricia in 1942.
They lived in Medford from 1953 to 1957 and moved to Salem in 1968 from Bend.
Mr. Kanne belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed golf, flying and traveling in his recreational vehicle.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Marcia Blair of Bend and Rebecca Kanne of Salem; son, Greg of Salem; two sisters, Maxine Eby of Oregon City and Thelma Johnson of the Oregon Coast; three grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

James Andrew Murphy
Aug. 6, 1948 - March 28, 2001
James Andrew Murphy of Sisters died of natural causes at his sister's home in Terrebonne. He was 52.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Autumn Funerals in Redmond.
Mr. Murphy was born Aug. 6, 1948, in Willston, N.D., to Robert and Dorothy (Culkins) Murphy. The family moved to the San Francisco area, Pacifica, when he was six years old. He moved from there in the mid-1970s settling primarily in Sisters.
He was the owner of Heritage Masonry in Sisters and then began working as a mason for Ken Lawson in 1988. He retired in March 2000.
Mr. Murphy was a member of the A.B.A.T.E. Motorcycle Club and attended the annual run in Sturgis, S.D.
He was a musician and singer, and was instrumental in putting together two bands, 'Full Tilt Boogie,' and 'Rough As A Cobb.' He had participated in rodeos in the past and was once a youth counselor for the State of Oregon.
He enjoyed wildlife and nature, living in Sisters and feeding birds from his hands.
Survivors include three sisters, Sue Murphy and Judy Land, both of Redmond, and Lisa Daugherty of Terrebonne.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ginger Peterson
March 22, 1923 - March 31, 2001
Ginger Peterson of Bend died Saturday as a result of a traffic accident near Roseburg. She was 78.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Bend with a reception following at the church.
Mrs. Peterson was born March 22, 1923, in Hubbard. She graduated from Oregon State University in 1944 with a degree in home economics and journalism. She worked as a correspondent for The Oregonian while attending Oregon State University. She received a master's degree at The Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., in 1945. She also received a master's degree in English and a teaching certificate in 1964.
She married
Jim Peterson on Aug. 16, 1947, in Salem.
They traveled throughout the world and had visited 60 countries as well as all of the continents except Antarctica. She had articles published at The Oregonian while on an extended world trip in 1974.
Mrs. Peterson had worked, while in Portland, as a free-lance public relations writer for the Girl Scouts, United Good Neighbors (United Way), Catlin Gabel Rummage Sale and The Kidney Association. She also worked as a substitute teacher.
She was an active member of Theta Sigma Phi (now WICI). She later joined Mary Kay Cosmetics as a consultant and became a director. She was active in Mary Kay at the time of her death. She recently was a volunteer for the SMART reading program.
Mrs. Peterson enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing, canoeing and art history.
Survivors include her husband, Jim of Bend; three daughters, Janet White of Kirkland, Wash., Kay Peterson of Woodburn and Laurie Peterson of Portland; brother, Manton Carl of Hubbard; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Major General Marion Carl.
