Freda W. Leaders

Oct. 30, 1914 - June 19, 2001

Freda W. Leaders, 86, of Albany died Tuesday.

She was born in Philomath to John and Julia (Schwietz) Quetschke. She lived in Astoria, Bend and Veneta, and moved to the Mennonite Home in Albany this year.

She married Donald F. Leaders Sept. 11, 1938, in Coos Bay. Her husband died Oct. 13, 1999.

Mrs. Leaders had owned and operated a hair salon in Astoria. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her nieces.

Surviving are son Fred of Gresham and sisters Ellan Hanlon of Albany and Betty Kopplien of Philomath.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

Glenn Hardenbrook

March 22, 1920 - Oct. 30, 2000

CORVALLIS - Glenn A. Hardenbrook, 80, of Corvallis died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was born and grew up in North Platte, Nev., the son of Elden and Agnes (Spicer) Hardenbrook.

Mr. Hardenbrook served in the Army during World War II, having joined shortly after the Pearl Harbor bombing. He trained in Hawaii and saw action in the South Pacific Theater, in New Guinea and the Philippines. He earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.

In 1956 he settled in Corvallis, where he married Mary Ivers on May 6, 1961.

Mr. Hardenbrook was a landscape specialist and equipment operator for the Grounds Maintenance Department at Oregon State University for many years and had retired.

He enjoyed music, and outdoor activities including fishing, hunting and camping. He was a member of the Corvallis Post of the American Legion and the Adair Rural Fire Protection District.

Surviving are wife Mary; son Alan of Corvallis; and grandson Brian Hardenbrook.

Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Mr. Hardenbrook's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Prince of Peace Mennonite Church in Adair Village, with the Rev. James Rehley officiating. Burial will be at North Palestine cemetery in Albany.

Contributions in his name may be made to the Adair Rural Fire Protection District, in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis, Ore. 97330.

Gary Bailey Jr.

Dec. 22, 1982 - Dep. 9, 2001

Gary Lee Bailey Jr., 18, of Lebanon died Sunday at Albany General Hospital.

Born in Klamath Falls, he grew up in the Brownsville area and attended Central Linn High School. His liked playing baseball, boxing, music, snowboarding, waterskiing, camping, swimming and WWF wrestling.

He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.

Surviving are parents Yvonne Williams and Brian Funk of Lebanon and Gary Sr. and Kim Bailey of Klamath Falls; grandparents Earl and Troy Bailey of Klamath Falls; great-grandmothers Alma Roy of Klamath Falls and Jennie DeArcos of Sprague River; brother Isaac Bailey of Lebanon; sister Jordan Bailey of Klamath Falls; and fiancee Lacey Fields of Albany.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Grace Bible Fellowship Church in Tangent. Pastor Don Bayne will officiate.

Gordon A. Sim Jr.

March 15, 1942 - Dec. 27, 2001

Gordon A. Sim Jr., 59, of Albany died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the son of Gordon A. and Miriam (Madill) Sim. He moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1950 and grew up in Phoenix and in Yuma, Ariz.

He married Joan Minter in 1960 in Winterhaven, Calif. She survives.

He moved to Albany in 1965 where he first worked for a vending machine company, then for Snow Peak Dairy with his father. For the past 29 years, he was a security officer for Wah Chang.

Mr. Sim was a former member of the Linn County Sheriff Reserves. He gave it up in order to spend more time with his family.

He liked to bowl, listen to the police scanner and go on drives to the Oregon Coast. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. He also loved to participate, as well as watch, auto races with his sons and grandsons.

He will be remembered for his love of spending time with his wife and family and for giving each of his grandchildren their first bite of ice cream.

Also surviving are sons Gordon A. "Gordy" Sim III and Murray Sim, both of Albany and Edward Sim of Salem; daughters Michelle Martinez-Ruiz of Springfield and Heidi Womack of Albany; parents Gordon Sr. and Miriam Sim of Salem; brother Michael Sim of Salem; sisters Heather Morford of Albany, Cheryl LaCacciato of Phoenix, Ariz., and Michele Deffenbaugh of Portland; and 11 grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home, with burial at Willamette Memorial Park. Pastor Mark Peterson will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gordon A. Sim Jr. Memorial Fund at Key Bank.

Edna LaNeva Dull

Dec. 19, 1923 -- Jan. 25, 2002

Edna LaNeva Dull, 78, of Albany died Friday at Alterra Wynwood Assisted Living Home.

Born in Lebanon to Stephen and Nora Miley (Howe) Dull, she moved with her family to a North Albany farm in 1924, and graduated from Corvallis High School in 1943. She earned her bachelor's degree in home economics in 1950 from Oregon State University.

She made her home on the North Albany farm until 1997, when she moved into Albany.

Miss Dull was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member and treasurer of the Albany Women's Christian Temperance Union and a member of the GAR.

She is survived by friend and caregiver Charlotte Asbahr-Atkeson of Albany; and many nieces and nephews. Brothers Francis, Joy, Anthony, Freeman, Sidney, Glenn, Neal and Elwood died earlier.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Barbara Nixon officiating.

Pauline Salmon

July 19, 1935 -- Feb. 4, 2002

SWEET HOME -- Pauline Pearl "Polly" Salmon, 66, of Sweet Home died Feb. 4 at her home.

She was the daughter of Irvin and Evelyn Clampit Phillips, and she married Richard W. Salmon on Dec. 30, 1967, in Las Vegas. They lived in Venice and Culver City in California before moving to Sweet Home in 1979.

Mrs. Salmon was a certified nurse's aide working for Senior and Disabled Services and was a private care nurse for 14 years.

She belonged to the Sweet Home Mennonite Church and enjoyed cooking and raising flowers. She collected cookbooks.

Surviving are husband Richard of Sweet Home; sons John Westman of Janesville, Wis., David Salmon of Garrison, Neb., and Paul Salmon of Albany; grandchildren Justin, Sarah, Brian and Laura; and great-grandchild Tyler.

A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sweet Home Mennonite Church, with Pastor Pete Kauffman officiating.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Sweet Home Mennonite Church, in care of Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long St., Sweet Home, 97386.

Evelyn M. Helm

Sept. 8, 1918 -- Feb. 10, 2002

Evelyn M. Helm, 83, of Albany died Sunday evening at Albany General Hospital.

She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., to Walter and Rosella Higgins. She married Jacob M. Helm and they moved to the Willamette Valley in 1950, living in Jefferson and Albany.

Known for her devotion to her family, Mrs. Helm enjoyed dancing, playing Bunco with friends and drinking coffee with her neighbors.

Surviving are husband Jacob of Albany; son Fred Ruggles of Sweet Home; daughters Rosella Neuenschwander, Darlene Barber and Catherine Tyner, all of Albany; sister Lorraine Bray of Minneapolis; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Brother Louis Higgins died earlier.

A private, family remembrance service will be scheduled later. Private inurnment will be at Willamette Memorial Park.

AAsum Funeral Home is handling arrangements and will forward written and floral tributes.

James E. Mabry

Oct. 19, 1956 -- June 1, 2002

James Eldrie Mabry, 45, of Albany died Saturday at Oregon Health & Sciences University Hospital in Portland of injuries sustained in a pedestrian-car accident. A lifelong Albany resident, he was the son of Charles and Ruth (Tierce) Mabry. He graduated from Regis High School in Stayton in 1974.

Mr. Mabry worked 12 years in food services for Oregon State University. He belonged to the Eagles Lodge and enjoyed playing in dart tournaments and fishing.

Surviving are mother Ruth Johansen of Jefferson; grandfather Eldrie Tierce of Jefferson; brothers Dennis Thomas of Monroe, Tom Thomas of Haines and Marvin Mabry of McMinnville; and a half-sister living in Arkansas. His father died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home. There will be no public service.

Benjamin Derbes

July 7, 1920 -- July 28, 2002

Former Sweet Home resident Benjamin Joseph Derbes, 82, of Bloomington, Calif., died Sunday.

Mr. Derbes lived in Sweet Home for 18 years before moving to Bloomington a year ago.

Surviving are wife Gloria of Bloomington; son Carlos Roman of Bloomington; and daughters Elsa Sosa of Bloomington, Dalia Obrayan of Oregon and Lenny Pocin of Camino, Calif.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Bloomington, Calif., with burial at Green Acres Memorial Park.
