Laura Summers

LEBANON -- Laura H. Summers, 99, of Lebanon died Tuesday at a care home.
She was born in Avon, S.D., to Henry and Amelia (Quartier) Hinzman. She grew up and attended school in Avon, where she married
Adolph C. Vesper on Nov. 29, 1932.
They farmed in South Dakota and moved to Oregon in 1939. Mr. Vesper died on Dec. 31, 1971.
She married
Russell R. Summers on May 4, 1980, in Lebanon. He died on Oct. 9, 1994.
Mrs. Summers had worked for the Lebanon Cannery for several years. She enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center, working in the kitchen and serving.
She belonged to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and to the church's Ladies Aid Society. She liked gardening, raising flowers and vegetables, and enjoyed canning, crocheting and sewing.
Surviving are daughters Nancy Vesper Ladislaus of Rancho Mirage, Calif., and Diann Vesper of Charlotte, N.C.; sister Edith Berndit of Tyndall, S.D.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Three brothers and a sister died earlier.
Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mrs. Summers' funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Ed Rumerfield officiating. Private burial will be at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Albany.

Schuck 'Bing' Mah
Dec. 2, 1916 -- Nov. 29, 2002
LEBANON -- Schuck Foon "Bing" Mah, 85, of Lebanon died Friday at home.
Born in the Quang Dong Province of China, he married
May Jan Chan on Sept. 22, 1938, in Quang Dong. After World War II they immigrated to the United States to pursue a better life.
Mr. Mah worked as a baker and cook in Stockton, Calif., before settling with his family in Lebanon in 1964. His wife died in 1996.
He purchased a failing business and transformed it into Bing's Kitchen. He loved the fishing, landscaping and business opportunities that the Lebanon area provided.
Surviving are son Kwong Che Mah of Lebanon; daughter Yo Chin Annabella Chia of Milwaukie; sister Shui Ping of Boston, Mass.; and grandchildren Christine Mains and Amy, Randall, Mercedes, Kimberly and Adam Mah; and great-grandson Erik Mains.
Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mr. Mah's funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery.

Johnny Brown Jr.
Dec. 23, 1986 -- July 30, 2002
SWEET HOME -- Johnny Dale "Big John" Brown Jr., 15, of Sweet Home, died in car accident Tuesday in Oklahoma City.
Born in Sacramento, Calif., he was the son of Johnny Dale Brown Sr. and Maria "Guadalupe" Flores. He lived in California until age 10, and in Wilsonville until 2000, when he moved to Sweet Home.
Big John was active in sports, playing football and participating in track. He wrestled in the eight grade.
He belonged to the Harvest Christian Center Church of God in Sweet Home, and enjoyed fishing, playing guitar and singing. He sang in the concert choir in school.
According to his father, he was "a big teddy bear with a tender heart."
Surviving are father and stepmother John and Shelley Brown of Sweet Home; mother Guadalupe of Oklahoma City; brothers Brian Lucero of Sweet Home, Albert Gutierrez of Atwater, Calif., and Gilbert Gutierrez of Merced, Calif.; sisters Kaitlyn Lucero and Shelbie Brown, both of Sweet Home, Amanda Gutierrez of Atwater, Calif., Emily Gutierrez and Helen Brown, both of Oklahoma City; and grandparents Roy and Helen Brown of Lebanon and Keith and Carol Warren of Canby.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Harvest Christian Center Church of God. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.
Verla Bales Grimes
Dec. 10, 1922 -- July 31, 2002
CORVALLIS -- Verla "Vickie" Bales Grimes, 79, of Corvallis died July 31 at home.
She was born in Iowa City, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1940. She earned degrees in journalism and nursing from Northwestern University. She worked at hospitals in Illinois and California.
She married
Ivan Benton Grimes in September 1946, and they moved to Portland in 1950. She became an Air Force wife when Ivan returned to active duty during the Korean War.
The couple lived in many places, including Hawaii, Texas, New Mexico, Illinois, Kansas, California, Washington, D.C., and Oregon. They settled in Corvallis after he retired in 1975. Mr. Grimes died April 1, 2000.
Mrs. Grimes participated in the Retired Officers Club of Corvallis and was a member of a national service organization cofounded by her mother.
Surviving are sons Christopher of Maryland and Gregory of Texas; sister Alba of Eugene; three grandsons; and a great-grandson. Sister Marjorie died earlier.
Visitation will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at McHenry Funeral Home. Mrs. Grimes' funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Father Gary Jones officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Leota M. Martin
Dec. 8, 1927 -- Feb. 28, 2002
Leota Mae Martin, 74, of Albany died Thursday at Albany Care Center.
She was born in Richmond, Calif., to Lloyd and Alma (Wilgus) Worden. She grew up in Yakima, Wash., lived in Jefferson and Albany and moved to Lebanon in 1972.
She was married
to Harvey E. Martin in 1953. After his death on Nov. 28, 1977, she returned to Albany.
Mrs. Martin was a member of a bowling league for many years. Her other favorite pastimes included playing pool, cooking, sewing and dancing. She belonged to the American Legion and the Moose and Eagles lodges.
Surviving are sons Hershel Martin and Terry Sheffield, both of Sandpoint, Idaho; daughter Helene McBride of Albany; sister Neoma Lee Raynor of Sandpoint, Idaho; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother Bud Worden, sister Velma Monroe and sons Trinin "Butch" Martin and Robert and Gary Lee Sheffield.

George Donald Adams
George Donald Adams, 85, of Lebanon died Thursday at Villa Cascade Care Center. He was born May 18, 1917. His funeral will be in Minnesota, with burial at Oakside cemetery. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements, and there will be no local services.

Kathryn B. Grugett
June 14, 1919 -- Aug. 1, 2002
LEBANON -- Kathryn Betty Sue Grugett, 83, of Lebanon died Thursday at Lebanon Community Hospital.
Born in Carrington, N.D., to Paul and Lydia (Stegelmeier) Wagner, she grew up in Carrington and moved to Lebanon in 1936.
She married
Albert M. Grugett on March 1, 1937, in Albany. They lived in the Tallman community near Lebanon and moved to Meredith Drive in town in 1954. Mr. Grugett died May 1, 1987.
A homemaker, Mrs. Grugett enjoyed the outdoors and was fond of animals, especially her dog, Tacy. She liked gardening and flowers and enjoyed her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are son A. Martin of Lebanon; daughters Betty Adamson and Paula Nohrnberg, both of Albany; sisters Helen Darrah of Mesa, Ariz., and Dorthey White of Jamestown, N.D.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Daughter Allane Jump died in 1999.
A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lebanon IOOF cemetery, with Pastor Ron Hotrum officiating. A reception will follow at Ralston Park.

Mike Shepard
May 9, 1947 -- Nov. 12, 2002
Former Albany resident David Mikeual "Mike" Shepard, 55, of Vancouver, Wash., died at home of heart failure on Nov. 12.
He was born in Tucumcari, N.M., to L.A. "Shep" and Evolyn Shepard. The family moved to Albany in 1955, and Mike lived in Albany until his senior year in high school.
Mr. Shepard was a survivor of the Vietnam War and belonged to the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. He also belonged to the National Rifle Association and the American Bowling Congress.
Surviving are wife Dorothy; daughters Dixie Shepard-Widner and Deidra Shepard, both of Vancouver, Wash.; son Donald of Vancouver; sisters Corine Ransom of Albany and Dixie Emery of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother John of Albany; and six grandchildren.
His parents, daughter Bonnie Michael Shepard and sister Sharon Turnbull preceded him in death.
Mr. Shepard's life was celebrated Nov. 22 at Orchards United Methodist Church. Burial with full military honors was to be today at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver.
