Margaret I. Brooks

April 25, 1922 - March 12, 2001

Margaret I. Brooks, 78, of Lebanon died Monday at home.

Born in Mayville, she was the daughter of Jessie and Addie (Edger) Pentecost. She married Stanley Brooks Nov. 1, 1943, in Metzger.

Margaret and Stanley moved around while he was in the service and later lived in Portland, Long Beach, Calif., Klamath Falls, Lakewood and Corvallis.

Mrs. Brooks was a sales clerk for Montgomery Ward in Portland and in California. She and her husband ran the Corvallis Montgomery Ward store. After their retirement, they moved to Lebanon.

Mrs. Brooks enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winters. She also liked reading, painting and collecting tea cups.

Surviving are husband Stanley; son Michael of Lebanon; sisters Hazel Tripp of Fossil and Alice Coen of Klamath Falls. Four brothers preceded her in death.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Huston-Jost Funeral home. Mrs. Brooks' funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Margaret Guthary

March 12, 1917 - March 13, 2001

Margaret Kathryn Guthary, 84, of Sweet Home died Tuesday.

Born in Siloam Springs, Ark., she was the daughter of Ben and Lizzie (Lupper) Daniel.

She married Milt D. Guthary on Sept. 15, 1934, in Siloam Springs. They moved to Sweet Home in 1947 and lived in Lebanon for 10 years before returning to Sweet Home. Mr. Guthary died Oct. 16, 1998.

Mrs. Guthary worked in an airplane plant in Baltimore, Md., during World War II. She was a homemaker and waitress and had worked in a mill that made moldings.

She played fiddle, drums, spoons and guitar and belonged to the Old Time Fiddlers Association. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and liked dancing, quilting, raising flowers, cooking and fishing for salmon, tuna and catfish.

Surviving are daughters Geraldean Gardner and Terrie Olson both of Sweet Home; sisters Alma Abbot of Klamath Falls and Inez Hansen of Star, Idaho; brother James Daniel of Talent; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A sister and four brothers preceded her in death.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Guthary's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral chapel, followed by burial in Gilliland cemetery.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Hospice at Lebanon Community Hospital.

Edith McDougall

Oct. 1, 1904 - March 13, 2001

Edith McDougall, 96, of Corvallis died Tuesday at Heart of the Valley Care Center.

She was born in Waterville, Wash., the daughter of John and Maggie (Hurley) McDougall. She moved to Corvallis in the mid-1920s and became a student at Oregon State University.

Miss McDougall worked on the campus, in the Electrical Engineering Department, for more than 35 years. She was known for her good work.

After retiring, she joined the President's Club in 1975. She supported community programs, including the Horner Museum, Friends of the Library, the OSU music and athletic programs and the OSU Alumni Association. She established an endowment for scholarships in electrical and computer engineering.

Miss McDougall was a volunteer for the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. She had traveled extensively, both in the United States and worldwide. She enjoyed gardening, concerts and the theater.

Surviving are her niece and nephew, Evelyn Murphy and Gerald Palmer, both of Portland; grandnieces and grandnephews; and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Her brother Willard McDougall and sister Mae Palmer preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Shepard of the Valley Lutheran Church, 2650 N.W. Highland Drive, Corvallis, with Pastor Patrick Chuinard officiating. Burial will be at Waterville, Wash.

Charley Neff

Sept. 21, 1916 - March 15, 2001

Charley Neff, 84, of Lebanon died Thursday at home.

Mr. Neff was born in Lebanon, the son of Victor and Ida (Engle) Neff. He married Opal Lorene Fitzgerald Oct. 26, 1935, and she died in December of 1987.

He was a farmer and carpenter and became superintendent of the hardboard division at Champion International. He retired in early 1980.

Mr. Neff enjoyed fishing, hunting and horticulture. A wildlife photographer who specialized in birds, he liked using his pictures for presentations to local groups.

Surviving are daughter Joy Ann Scarborough of Medford; sister Grace Neff of Albany; grandsons Craig Watkins of Grants Pass, and Mark Watkins of Williams; and great-grandchildren Shannon, Alysha, Andy, Charlie and Angharad.

There will be no public services.

Contributions in his name may be made to the Oregon Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 N.W. Buchanan Ave., Corvallis, Ore. 97330.

Marguerite Stocking

July 2, 1916 - March 17, 2001

Marguerite T. Stocking, 84, of Albany died Saturday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

Mrs. Stocking was born in Nevada, Mo., to Howard and Marguerite Elizabeth (Talbot) Brown. She lived in Twin Falls, Idaho and San Francisco.

She married Norman T. Stocking April 2, 1943, in San Francisco. They settled in Los Angeles, where they lived until 1982, when they moved to Lebanon. Mr. Stocking died Sept. 26, 1992.

Mrs. Stocking enjoyed knitting and doing needlepoint.

She is survived by daughter Ann Parrish of Albany; son Tom Stocking of Simi Valley, Calif.; stepdaughter Barbara Locati of Walla Walla, Wash.; and sister Elizabeth Payne of Petaluma, Calif. There are 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

In keeping with Mrs. Stocking's wishes, there will be no services.

Virgil Stutzman

Aug. 6, 1918 - March 17, 2001

Former Linn County resident Virgil Stutzman, 82, of Pasco, Wash., died Saturday.

Mr. Stutzman was born in Woodriver, Neb., to Pearl and Ida (Schweitzer) Stutzman. He married Dorthy Nofziger Jan. 14, 1944. They lived in Oregon, including in Linn County, until 1961, when they went to the Pasco area to farm.

He had worked at a sawmill and belonged to the Mennonite Church.

Mr. Stutzman retired from farming in 1983. He enjoyed woodworking, country gospel music and collecting John Deere memorabilia.

Surviving are wife Dorthy; children Kay and Darold, both of Pasco, Wash., DeWanda Miller of Shedd, Darlene Stuart of Pilot Rock, Marlin of West Richland, Wash., and Rodney of Prosser, Wash. There are 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Meuller's Greenlee Funeral Home, 1608 W. Court St., Pasco, Wash. 99301.

Mr. Stutzman's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Emanuel Baptist Church, 1116 N. 20th St., Pasco, Wash., with Pastors Rodney Stutzman and James Cross officiating. Burial will follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Kennewick, Wash.

Contributions in his name may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arne Thorsen Sr.

May 1, 1917 - March 17, 2001

Arne Thorsen Sr., 83, of Albany died Saturday.

Mr. Thorsen was born in Sandness, Norway. In the 1930s he joined the Norway Freedom Fighters and was part of the organized opposition to the Nazis during World War II. He was shot in the back and left for dead by the Nazis.

After the war Mr. Thorsen learned the carpentry trade.

He married Elsa Christensen in the early 1950s in Stavanger, Norway. They moved to Chicago where he was a carpenter. After returning to Norway and then living in Seattle, they moved to Newport in 1968. They lived in Corvallis before moving to Albany following his retirement. Mrs. Thorsen preceded him in death.

Mr. Thornsen was a carpenter for Boeing while in Seattle. In Newport he owned and operated the Norselander Motel. He owned a motel in Corvallis for two years before retiring. He enjoyed playing accordion and piano professionally in many bands, including the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club Band.

In his spare time he liked building houses. He was a political activist and marched for peace at the University of Oregon in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mr. Thorsen belonged to the Eagles and Moose lodges, the Sons of Norway and Amnesty International.

Surviving are son Arne Jr. of Winston; and sister Thora Thorsen of Norway. Brother Einer Thorsen died earlier.

There will be no public services. Contributions in Mr. Thorsen's name may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

RoseMary Gingerich

Nov. 4, 1917 - March 19, 2001

RoseMary Gingerich, 83, of Sweet Home died Monday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

She was born in Raymond, Wash., the daughter of Frank and Blenche (Trezise) McMonagle. She graduated from Raymond High School in 1937 and from Grays Harbor Business College in accounting in 1939.

She married Harold Emerson Gingerich on Dec. 25, 1939, in Raymond. They moved to Sweet Home in 1947. When her husband became ill, she went to work for White's Electronics, and she retired from the shipping department in 1985. Mr. Gingerich died Oct. 20, 1972.

Mrs. Gingerich participated in activities at Holley School for many years. She sewed curtains for the school and always was willing to help out.

She belonged to the Methodist Church and to the Holley Adettes. She volunteered at the Sweet Home Senior Center and was a 56-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a secretary for the order for 32 years.

He enjoyed handicrafts, including sewing, knitting and crocheting. She liked playing cards and was especially fond of traveling. She had been many places, including to Europe, Canada, the East Coast and the Caribbean.

Surviving are daughters Norma Jewell of Eugene and Valina Garlinghouse of Sweet Home; son Richard "Butch" of Ontario; brothers William McMonagle of Tacoma, Wash., and Frank McMonagle of Wenatchee, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sister Annabell Stephens and by three great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel, and from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Gingerich's funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the church, with Pastor Karen Little officiating. Burial will be at Gilliland cemetery. A gathering at the Eastern Star Hall will follow the service.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Sweet Home order of the Eastern Star No. 164.
