`Lou' Pool

May 1, 1934 - Feb. 13, 2001

LEBANON - Guadalupe Beatrice "Lou" (Soto) Pool, 66, of Lebanon died Tuesday at home.

She was born in Hayward, Calif., the daughter of Albert and Delphine (Rivera) Soto. She grew up in the San Francisco Bay area.

She married James W. Pool April 5, 1956, in Reno, Nev. They moved to Corvallis in 1964 and to Albany in 1971. Mr. Pool died Jan. 11, 1990, and Mrs. Pool moved to Lebanon in 1991.

Mrs. Pool was a homemaker who was devoted to her family. She enjoyed collecting and dealing in antiques and liked traveling, camping and taking trips to the coast.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany.

Surviving are sons Gary of Lebanon, and Don, Alvin and Bud, all of Albany; daughters Sandra Verner of Texas and Jackie Lara of Lebanon; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by mother Delphine Soto of Lebanon; brothers Ralph Soto of Dublin, Calif., Reggie Soto of Manteca, Calif., and Glen, Randy and Jerry Soto, all of Albany; sisters Martha Soto of Albany, Irene Aguilera of California and Hope Starkweather of Westport, Wash.

Son James Jr. died Sept. 8, 1998, and brothers Albert Sr. and George Soto preceded her in death.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home. Private services are planned, with burial to be at Willamette Memorial Park.

Lillie H. Schliep

Jan. 18, 1916 - Feb. 13, 2001

Lillie Hannah (Biggs) Schliep, 85, of Albany died Tuesday at Lydia's House at the Mennonite Home.

Born in Chicago, she was the daughter of Henry William and Lillie Hannah (Jones) Biggs. She grew up in the Chicago suburbs, near Wrigley Field, and graduated from high school in Elgin, Ill. She was a Chicago Cubs fan.

She married Paul Mathew Schliep April 24, 1937, in Ontarioville, Ill. They moved to Myrtle Creek in 1945. Mr. Schliep died in October of 1982, and Mrs. Schliep moved to Albany in 1995.

She and her husband had owned and operated Whitey's Service Station in Myrtle Creek for 20 years, and she continued to run it after her husband died. In Myrtle Creek she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at the Senior Center.

Mrs. Schliep belonged to the Rebekah Lodge, R.S.V.P. and Help One Another. She was a member of the Anglican Lutheran faith.

She collected elephants, was an avid gardener and liked swimming. She was known as a "can do" sort of person who especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are daughters Barbara Lewis of Shedd, Junette Collins of Tucson, Ariz., and Penny West of Roseburg. There are seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Son Edward died May 28, 1963, and brother Henry Biggs and sister Marjorie Mast preceded her in death.

Mrs. Schliep's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Home. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Myrtle Creek I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 S.W. Washington, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Bill Tapp

Aug. 14, 1930 - Feb. 9, 2001

Bill Tapp, 70, of Albany died Friday. He was a resident of Waverly Guest Home.

Mr. Tapp had worked part time for Larry Doyle and had been a handyman for the Linn County Fairgrounds. He enjoyed horseback riding.

A member of Eastside Christian Church for 30 years, before that he belonged to the Court Street Christian Church in Salem. He liked serving his church.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eastside Christian Church, 1910 Grand Prairie Road S.E., Albany. Contributions in his name may be made to the church.

Robert R. Urban

Sept. 3, 1917 - Feb. 11, 2001

CORVALLIS - Robert Russell Urban, 83, of Corvallis died Sunday.

Mr. Urban was born in Timber Lake, S.D., to Paul and Elsie (Lang) Urban. He graduated from high school in Timber Lake and moved to Corvallis with his family in 1934.

Mr. Urban attended Oregon State University before joining the Army and serving throughout World War II. After the war he owned and operated Benton Printers for many years. His work included printing programs for the OSU Athletics Department.

Mr. Urban belonged to the OSU Beaver Club for 56 years, was an avid Beaver fan and belonged to many local lodges and organizations. He established a college scholarship fund for Timber Lake High School graduates.

He is survived by his friends.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at McHenry Funeral Home. His funeral will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and burial will follow at Crystal Lake cemetery.

K. Donald Cross

Jan. 27, 1935 - Feb. 9, 2001

Former Albany resident Kenneth "Donald" Cross, 66, of North Bend died Friday.

Mr. Cross was born to Kenneth and Louise (Robinette) Cross. He grew up and attended schools in Albany. He was an Army veteran. He was married Feb. 13, 1981 in Drain.

Mr. Cross was a professional bowler until a shoulder injury ended his career. He remained an avid bowler and competed in a senior bowling league until his death.

He moved to North Bend in 1960, and was a custodian at North Bend High School until his 1991 retirement.

Active in Take Pounds Off Sensibly (T.O.P.S.), he was runner-up to the state T.O.P.S. king in 1996. He was president of T.O.P.S. for the past six months.

Surviving are wife Heidi of North Bend; daughters Lori Webb of Albany and Leslee Hobson of Jefferson; and sister LaRene Saxton of Keizer. There are two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at North Bend Chapel, 2014 McPherson St., with Pastor Filomeno Kakilala officiating. A reception will follow at the Hospice Bereavement Center, 1610 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

Monya L. Heikkila

March 22, 1937 - Feb. 12, 2001

LEBANON - Monya Lee Heikkila, 63, of Lebanon died Monday at home.

She was born in Fort Smith, Ark., to Audie and Vera (Dunnigan) Rust.

She married Benjamin F. Heikkila Sr. Sept. 28, 1959 in Leachville, Ark., and they lived many years in Lebanon. Mr. Heikkila died in November of 1991.

Mrs. Heikkila enjoyed electronics and reading.

Surviving are daughters Simonya Crozier of Baxter Springs, Ark., and Glenda Heikkila and Dorothy Pruett, both of Lebanon; and sons Gary Merceir of Sanford, Mich., Benjamin Heikkila Jr. of Lebanon, Johnny and Jimmy Heikkila, both of Rogers, Ark., Audie Heikkila of Jefferson and Scott Heikkila of Tigard. There are 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mrs. Heikkila's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will be a service in Greenwood, Ark., where burial will be at Mt. Harmony cemetery.

Elizabeth Studer

March 4, 1919 - Feb. 10, 2001

SCIO - Elizabeth Jane Studer, 81, of Scio died Saturday in Stayton.

Mrs. Studer was born in Polo, Mo., and lived in Keizer for 22 years. She spent the last four years in Scio.

She married Harry Studer Dec. 29, 1934 in Macon, Mo. Mr. Studer died in 1995.

Mrs. Studer enjoyed singing and painting.

Surviving are son Harry Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; daughters Bette Gutcher of Wasilla, Alaska, and Brenda Myers of Scio; sisters Mary Reagan of St. Louis, Mo., Jessie Hoskins, Irene Sayers and Alice Salisbury, all of Hannibal, Mo., Margaret Lewis of San Diego, Calif., and Gertrude Spencer of Villa Hills, Ky. There are 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Studer's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Keizer Funeral Chapel, followed by burial at Claggett cemetery.

Contributions in her name may be made to the American Heart Association, 1425 N.W. Irving St., suite 100, Portland, Ore. 97232-4201.

Paul Kinsey

Aug. 20, 1933 - Feb. 15, 2001

JEFFERSON - Paul Kinsey, 67, of Jefferson died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Norman, Ark., to James and Velma (Ryan) Kinsey.

He moved to California in 1944 and returned to Arkansas a year later. He moved to Albany in 1950 and to Jefferson in 1976.

He married Mavis Stickley Feb. 21, 1968, in Reno, Nev.

Mr. Kinsey drove an ambulance and served in the Albany Police Reserves from 1959-72.

He purchased Valley Merchant Police in 1962 and operated it since then.

He was also a funeral director, licensed in Oregon.

Mr. Kinsey enjoyed fishing, held a pilot's license and was active as a diver with the Linn County Sheriff's Search and Rescue.

He served in the Army National Guard and Air National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Mavis, of Jefferson; sons James Kinsey of Lake Oswego, Dana Kinsey of Parker, Colo., and Rene Kinsey of Honolulu, Hawaii; daughters Lynda Lentz of Albany and Margo Batten of Magna, Utah; sister Veda Hamm of Ogden, Utah; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by daughter Ronda Kraber; father James Kinsey, stepfather Frank Howton and mother Velma Kinsey Howton.

Viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fisher Funeral Home.

The funeral for Mr. Kinsey will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home, with committal following at Willamette Memorial Park in Millerburg.

Memorial contributions can be made in his name to Evergreen Hospice or the Boys & Girls Club of Albany in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.
