Vera M. Barry
Oct. 11, 1904 - Jan. 23, 2001
Vera Maurine Barry, 96, died Jan. 23 at her home in North Albany. Mrs. Barry was a longtime Lebanon resident and spent the last few years living with her daughter.
Mrs. Barry was born in Oxford, Kan., the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Harvey) Carson. She grew up in Sedan, Kan., and attended normal school in Pittsburg, Kan. She taught at Cascade School in Caney, Kan.
She married
Dan A. Barry June 7, 1927. They lived in Los Angeles before moving to the Lebanon area in the summer of 1944. Mr. Barry died in December of 1983.
Mrs. Barry completed her bachelor's degree at Oregon State University through night and extension courses. She taught full time at Lacomb Elementary School until 1968, when she retired.
A member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Lebanon, she taught Sunday school there. She always enjoyed teaching and tutoring children, and she liked gardening. She cherished visits from her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are son Dan Lloyd Barry of Grants Pass; daughter Leila Carrick of Albany; brother Kenneth Carson of Santa Clara, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Brother Robert Q. Carson died in 1998.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Lebanon, with Pastors Bruce Little and Craig Johnson and the Rev. Lori Lofsvold officiating. A private graveside service was held at Providence cemetery.

Victoria M. Martin
July 4, 1948 - Feb. 10, 2001
Victoria Marie (Underwood) Martin, 52, of Albany died Saturday at Albany General Hospital.
Born in San Angelo, Texas, Victoria was the daughter of Russell and Faye (Chapman) Underwood. The family moved to Albany when she was four, and she attended Albany schools.
She married
Luther G. Martin Dec. 11, 1967, in Nampa, Idaho. After her husband received his discharge from military service, the Martins settled in Albany in 1969.
Mrs. Martin had worked at Albany General Hospital in emergency room admitting. She also operated a day care for many years. She enjoyed making pies and selling them at the farmers market.
In Albany she is survived by husband Luther, son Camon, daughter Tori Martin, mother Faye Underwood, brother Dean Underwood and sister Wanda Sitton. Daughter Lisa Marshburn lives in Corvallis. There are five grandchildren. Her father, Russell, died Dec. 6, 2000.
Viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home. Mrs. Martin's funeral will be at
10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private burial will be at Palestine cemetery.

Boyd Blankenship
June 17, 1922 - Feb. 10, 2001
SWEET HOME - Boyd L.D. Blankenship, 78, of Sweet Home died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.
The son of James and Dora (Mueller) Blankenship, he was born in Moreland, Ark. He grew up in Arkansas and served in the Army in World War II.
He moved to Garibaldi in 1947 and to Sweet Home in 1960.
Mr. Blankenship worked for the Willamette Industries Plywood Mill in Foster until his 1983 retirement. He belonged to the International Woodworkers Union.
He was a member of the Long Street Church of God. He loved to fish, hunt and camp, was an avid gardener and mowed many lawns. He also enjoyed working on small engines.
He married
Helen L. Hill and she survives. Also surviving are daughters Janice Majers of Old Town, Fla., and Charolette Leach of Sweet Home; sons Paul of Shedd and Donald of Portland; and grandchildren Clayton, Alvie, Jason, Bradley, Heather and Jennifer; and great-granddaughter Mykenzie.
His sisters, Delila Brannon of Sweet Home, Juanita Flowers of Toledo and Ruby Garner of Tillamook survive. Infant daughter Sharon died in 1946, and brothers Ira, Cleo, Odell and Dean preceded him in death.
Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel. Mr. Blankenship's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Sweet Home Assembly of God, with Pastor Gary Robertson officiating. Burial will follow at Gilliland cemetery.

Martha Harrington
July 1, 1928 - Feb. 14, 2001
LEBANON - Martha Messmer Harrington, 72, of Lebanon died Thursday at the Albany Mennonite Home.
Born in Sidney, Mont., she was the daughter of Christ and Rosie (Miller) Messmer, Russian emigrants. She lived briefly in Idaho and grew up in Lebanon.
She married
George Harrington in 1950 in Vancouver, Wash. They settled on family land in Sodaville.
Mrs. Harrington worked more than 18 years for Smokecraft in Albany before retiring in 1990. She attended the Sodaville Evangelical Church and belonged to Crowfoot Grange.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she liked to dance, play pinochle and travel. As a young woman she enjoyed playing volleyball.
Surviving are husband George; sons Ron of White City, Tom of Lebanon and Larry of Albany; daughters Julie Grunberg of Albany, Barb McCown of Bend, Betty Cushman of Eugene, Patti Nugent of Lebanon and Jan Alexander of Vancouver, Wash.; stepson George III of Escondido, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by brothers Andy Messmer of Urbana, Ill., Chris Messmer of Seattle and Art Messmer of Lebanon; sisters Frieda Rochin of Livermore, Calif., Emma Cheney of Salem, and Ida Port and Rosie Edds, both of Lebanon.
Brother Albert Messmer and sisters Louise Lange, Molly Newberg and Minnie Baker died earlier.
Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mrs. Harrington's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastors Brian Hawes and Ron Hotrum officiating. Burial will follow at the Lebanon I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Erika W. Elliott
April 14, 1936 - Feb. 14, 2001
LEBANON - Erika W. Elliott, 64, of Lebanon died Wednesday at Lebanon Community Hospital.
Born in Munich, Germany, she was the daughter of Dominik and Walburga (Breiter) Wiedl. She grew up and attended schools in Germany, and moved to the United States in 1959.
She lived in Burbank, Calif., from 1959 until 1967, when she moved to Lebanon. She was a member of the Jefferson United Church of God and she liked to cook, garden and travel. Also, she enjoyed her pets.
She married
Darwin Elliott July 17, 1980, in Reno, Nev. He survives. Mrs. Elliott is also survived by brother Manfred Wiedl of Austria and two nieces.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home.
Emma Pearl Enle
March 3, 1914 - Feb. 14, 2001
JEFFERSON - Emma Pearl Enle, 86, of Jefferson died Wednesday.
She was born in Gage, Okla., to George and Eunice (Patty) Werline. She moved to the Willamette Valley at age 3. They drove their 1917 Maxwell from Oklahoma to Pasco, Wash., put it on a barge and floated it down the Columbia River to Portland.
The family settled near Independence, and she grew up there. She graduated from St. Mary's of the Valley High School in Beaverton in 1932. After high school she worked on the family farm.
She married
Rhys Wood in South Mills, N.C., in 1942. They later divorced. She worked for the Oregon State Unemployment Department in Salem from 1950 to 1953, and she was a homemaker. She married
Burton Enle in New York City in 1953. Until 1962, they lived in several communities while he served in the Navy.
The Enles moved to the Butte Falls/Prospect area in 1962 and to Jefferson in 1987. An avid fan of African violets, Mrs. Enle was known for her talent for raising them. She enjoyed taking care of her house, gardening, canning, reading and, in her youth, had liked dancing. She was a fan of big-band music.
Surviving are husband Burton; son John Wood of Hillsboro; brother John Werline of Klamath Falls; and grandchildren Sara Wood of Albany and Jenni Wood of Seattle.
Brother Donald Werline and sister Mildred Hill died earlier.

Leona V. Hare
Sept. 13, 1922 - Feb. 14, 2001
LA PINE - Former Albany area resident Leona Virgina (McCary) Mouser Hare, 78, of La Pine, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Antlers, Okla., to Elmer and Maggie (Ladyman) McCary, she grew up and attended school in Antlers. She helped her parents with farm work and the care of her younger siblings and her grandparents.
In 1945 she narrowly missed being in a tornado with her children. The tornado completely destroyed her family's home.
In 1954 the family moved to Oregon with children Maxine, Jerry and Calvin. They settled in the Dever-Conner area, and Leona worked for several farmers as a row boss on hoeing and harvesting crews. Later she worked in her brother Bud's meat market in Jefferson.
She married
William "Bill" Hare in 1966, and they settled in La Pine. They enjoyed the high mountain lakes, where they fished, camped and cut wood. They also fished and camped in other states.
Mrs. Hare enjoyed canning and made trips to the Willamette Valley to get fresh produce. She especially liked bean-snapping parties at her sister Marteen's home. Shopping was one of her favorite hobbies, including clipping ads and coupons and generously sharing her bargains with relatives.
Mrs. Hare was a gospel music fan and was known for writing great letters.
In the early 1990s, the Hares fell in love with Turkey Creek Landing, Okla., and built their home there. They returned to La Pine last year, to be near their sons.
Surviving are husband Bill; sons Jerry of Gilchrist and Calvin of Albany; brothers Jimmy McCary of Ringold, Okla. and Hershel McCary of Basin City, Wash.; sister Marteen Cook of Albany; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and Mrs. Hare's close friend, Sharon Weaver, who helped care for her in her final illness.
Daughter Virginia Maxine Soler, brother James McCary, and infant son Milton Mouser preceded her in death, as did four grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Whispering Pines Baptist Church in La Pine. Burial will be at La Pine Community cemetery.

Laura C. King
Feb. 18, 1921 - Feb. 14, 2001
Laura Charlene King, 79, of Albany died Wednesday at home.
Born in Amboy, Wash., she was the daughter of Earl and Nancy (Cox) Randles. She moved to Kittitas, Wash., in 1938, and married
John F. King Dec. 16, 1943. They moved to Albany in 1972.
During World War II, Mrs. King was an office worker for Boeing in Seattle. A homemaker, she was an active volunteer in Albany for Meals on Wheels and Fish. She belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church where she attended Mass regularly.
Surviving are husband John; twin daughters Mary Ann Healy of Hillsboro and Betty Jean Weinert of Milwaukie; brother Jack Randles of Red Bluff, Calif.; and sister Wanda Boche of Beverly, Wash. There are five grandchildren.
A memorial Mass for Mrs. King will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father John Betts officiating.
