Denise Segerson
Denise Segerson, 44, a long-time resident of the Oregon coast, died Thursday, July 25, 2002.
Denise was born Sept. 11, 1956 in Portland, Ore. to Don and Nadine Gates. She graduated from Taft High School in Lincoln City in 1975 and lived in Depoe Bay and Otis for 32 years.
She was self-employed as a pet groomer.
Denise is survived by her parents, Don and Nadine Gates of Dallas, Ore.; a brother, Michael Gates of Roseberg, Ore.; an aunt, Darlene Gonzolez of Depoe Bay; and a cousin, Ron Gonzolez of Portland, Ore.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2002 at Church of the Nazarene, 227 NW 12th Street, Newport.
The family suggests contributions be made in Denise's memory to the Oregon Humane Society.

Leona C. Brink
Leona C. Brink, 84, of Newberg, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the Chehalem Health & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born January 8, 1916 in Hartley, Iowa, to Jake and Anna Senn Nagel.
She and Henry Brink were married in June, 1935. They moved to California in 1938 and, later, to Oregon.
Mrs. Brink was primarily a homemaker and helpmate to her husband in his endeavors. She enjoyed reading and being with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Brink; four brothers, Walter Nagel, Albert Nagel, Vernon Nagel, and Ralph Nagel; and one sister, Louise Mickelson.
Mrs. Brink is survived by her daughters Shirley Milbradt, of Neotsu, Ore., and Nancy Rubin of Oakdale, Calif.; brothers Donnie Nagel of San Jose, Calif., and Daryle Nagel of Pokohonas, Iowa.
She is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services for Mrs. Nagel will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the Chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 North Evans, McMinnville, Ore. Pastor Jim Peterson of Lafayette Community Church will be officiating.
Internment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville.
The family suggests contributions to Alzheimer's Association, in care of Macy & Son.

Henry Johnson
Eight-eight-year-old Lincoln City resident Henry Johnson, well known in the community for his long daily walks along the beach and highway near Taft, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 while on one of his walks.
Henry was born Feb. 1, 1915 in Pasadena, Calif., the son of Dutch immigrants. He spent his early years in Edgemont, Calif., where he played several school sports and enjoyed hunting in the nearby hills. In 1934, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp., where he built roads, trails and fought wildfires, primarily around Mt. Shasta in California, and in the Yellowstone and Grand Teton regions of Wyoming.
He married Jean Stirratt in Oak Grove, Wis. in 1937, and they took up residence on his father’s abandoned chicken farm in Edgemont that November. He built up his flocks of chickens and sold the eggs door-to-door in Riverside.
During World War II he served the country as a farmer and rancher, but also helped construct buildings at nearby March Army Air Corps base, and was a member of the Ground Observation Corps, trained to identify enemy aircraft.
Newcastle’s disease wiped out his chicken flocks shortly after the war, and he took a job in 1952 as a Nabisco warehouseman, and later as a Nabisco delivery truck driver.
Henry retired in 1980, and continued to live in Edgemont for about eight years before moving to Portland. to escape the encroaching strip malls and six-lane highways. He moved in with daughter Nancy, and was only a few blocks away from son Frank, a firefighter for the City of Portland. Henry came to Lincoln City in 1992 with daughter Nancy, and Frank came to Lincoln City a few years later.
Henry was predeceased by his wife Jean, and is survived by sister Frances Johnson of Kalamazoo, Mich.; four children – Henry and his wife sharon from Moreno Valley, Calif., Carol Parker and her husband Ron from Escondido, Calif., Nancy McKnight and her husband Robert, and Frank and his wife Beverly, all of Lincoln City. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Henry was laid to rest at Montecito Memorial Park in Loma Linda, Calif., on Tuesday, Dec. 2. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and those he met with along his walking routes.

W.W. Bounds
W. W. “Bud” Bounds, of Depoe Bay, Died Oct. 14, 2003 in Redlands, Calif. at the age of 86.
Bud was born Sept. 3, 1917. He lived in the Miroco area of Depoe Bay for the past 33 years. He served in the USAF and retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in Salem.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Winifred “Freddie” Bounds of Depoe Bay; daughter Judith Lund of Depoe Bay; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Jeffrey and Venita Bounds of Redlands, Calif.; granddaughters Kamie Zitek of Turner, Ore., Marlisa Skimin and Shayna Baca, both of Highland, Calif., and Loran Bounds of Redlands, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service is planned for spring.

Dale L. Vandehey Jr.
Dale L. Vandehey Jr., 47, died November 22, 2003 in Wenatche, Wash. following a short illness.
Mr. Vandehey was born on Sept. 10, 1956 in Queens, New York.
His mother, June Haglund, preceded him in death.
Mr. Vandehey is survived by his father, Dale Vandehey of Lincoln City; a sister, Melissa Vandehey of Lincoln City; a brother, David Haglund of Sherwood; a grandmother in Wenatche, Wash; two nieces; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services are pending. Inurnment will be in Forest Grove.

Elizabeth Fahndrich

Oct. 19, 1902 - Sept. 16, 2000

Elizabeth Fahndrich, 97, of Albany died Saturday.

Born in Leadville, Colo., she was the daughter of David and Barbara (Ruby) Rediger. She moved to Thurman, Colo., where she finished her schooling and worked on the family farm.

She married John Fahndrich Sept. 6, 1923, at her parents' farm near Thurman. The Fahndrichs farmed in Colorado until 1938, when they moved to Albany. Mr. Fahndrich preceded her in death.

Mrs. Fahndrich was a homemaker, worked some on a farm and was a cook for a short time at the Mennonite Home. She belonged to Fairview Mennonite Church and to a church sewing group and a Bible study group.

Mrs. Fahndrich enjoyed quilting, crafts, cooking, music, gardening and taking trips with her family to the coast.

Surviving are sons Dale of Upland, Calif., and Richard of Salem; daughters Muriel Fahndrich of Albany, and Verdella Slagell of Hydro, Okla.; sisters Katie Burkey and Leah Burkey, both of Albany; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Brother Kelly Rediger and sisters Lilly Birky, Anna Rediger and Lydia Stutzman preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at AAsum Funeral Home. A celebration of Mrs. Fahndrich's life will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Mennonite Church.

Donovan Hugie

Feb. 11, 1929 - Feb. 8, 2001

SCIO - Donovan Hugie, 71, of Scio died Thursday at home.

Born in Scottsbluff, Neb., Mr. Hugie was the son of Albert Jr. and Edna Hugie. He grew up in Logan, Utah, and served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Juno. He attended Utah State College.

He married Clea Hendricks June 4, 1948, in the Logan, Utah, L.D.S. Temple. He worked testing Minute-man missiles in Thiokoe, Utah. He owned a commercial refrigeration business and for 40 years was a poultryman.

Mr. Hugie belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many leadership positions. He enjoyed fishing, especially with his grandchildren.

Surviving are wife Clea; sons Scott of Phoenix, Ariz., Dennis of Scio and Darin of Lebanon; daughters Linda Wilde of LaGrande and Barbara Craig of Canby; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Son Darrell and grandson Donovan James Hugie preceded him in death. Viewing will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Huston-Jost Funeral Home.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lebanon. Burial will follow at Providence cemetery in Scio.

William A. Austin

Dec. 27, 1920 - April 22, 2001

William A. "Bill" Austin, 80, of Brownsville died Sunday.

Mr. Austin was born in Brownsville to Chester and Goldie (Pearl) Austin. He graduated from Brownsville High School and served in the Navy, stationed at Norfolk, Va., during World War II.

He returned to Brownsville, and played semi-pro baseball in the mid-1940s. He coached the Brownsville basketball team that won the district championship and was honored at a banquet by the Eugene Active Club.

Mr. Austin worked in the plywood industry as an inspector in Roseburg, Merlin and Baker, and in Crescent City, Calif., Flathead Lake, Mont., St. Maries, Idaho, and outside of Spokane, Wash.

In the late 1980s, Mr. Austin returned to Brownsville. He belonged to the Albany American Legion Post.

Surviving are sons Will of Corvallis, James of New Hampshire, and Robert; daughter Jerri Marler of Bossier City, La.; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Alford cemetery, with the Rev. David McCracken officiating.

Contributions in his name may be made to the baseball program at the Brownsville Recreation Center, in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Pearl Thogmartin

July 22, 1910 - Sept. 16, 2000

LEBANON - Pearl Hadley Thogmartin, 90, of Lebanon died Saturday at home.

Mr. Thogmartin was born in Missouri, the son of James and Oma (Redfurn) Thogmartin. He married Velma Clark on July 31, 1937, in Arizona, and they moved to Lebanon in 1952.

Mr. Thogmartin served in the Army during World War II, from March 5, 1943, until Oct. 2, 1945.

Surviving are wife Velma; son Jerry of Lebanon; brother Wayne of Portland; a grandchild and a great-grandchild. Ten brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Mr. Thogmartin's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by burial at the Lebanon I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Contributions in his name may be made to the Lebanon Meals on Wheels Program or to the Free Methodist Church Roof Fund. They may be sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, Ore. 97355.

Jorge L. Collazo

April 8, 1962 - Feb. 7, 2001

Jorge L. Collazo, 38, of Albany died Wednesday at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he moved to Puerto Rico at age 10. After graduating from Agustin Stahl High School in Bayamon, he earned his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Mayaguez.

He married Olga Lydia Espinosa June 12, 1987, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Mr. Collazo worked as a civilian at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and for Intel in Puerto Rico and Hewlett Packard in Puerto Rico and Oregon. He moved to Albany two years ago.

Surviving are wife Olga; children Alexander, Angela and Jaylemar, all of Albany; parents Pedro and Ana Rosa Collazo of Puerto Rico; brother Pedro of New York; and sister Diamilet Collazo of Texas.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of God. Fisher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Joyce A. Beckett

April 9, 1932 - April 22, 2001

Joyce A. Beckett, 69, of Albany died Sunday at Albany General Hospital.

She was born in Tres Piedras, N.M., the daughter of William and Lillian (Pruett) Nolty. She grew up in Colorado and in Oakland, Calif.

She married Jack Beckett 51 years ago, Dec. 31, 1949, in San Francisco. They lived in several West Coast locations while he served in the Navy. He retired in 1970, and they moved to Albany in 1971.

Mrs. Beckett worked for Payless Drugs in Albany for 21 years, retiring in 1991. She belonged to the Linn County Genealogical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Albany Friends of the Library.

Her hobbies included reading, cross stitching, sewing and working with her husband in the yard.

Surviving are husband Jack; daughter Jackie Sorenson of Albany; brother James Thomas of Pueblo, Colo.; sister Mary Ann Reiley of Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

At Mrs. Beckett's request, there will be no public services.
