Patricia Papke
Patricia “Vicki” Papke, 60, of Lincoln City, died Friday, May 23, 2003.
She was born Sept. 23, 1942 in Lebanon, Oregon to Kenneth and Grace Handley. She graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in San Francisco, Calif., and graduated from nursing school in San Francisco.
In 1991, Vicki married
Jay W. Papke in Mollala, Oregon. She worked as an LPN and Respiratory Therapist in the Canby, Ore. area; and owned and operated Scotts Mills Market from 1991 to 1996.
The Papkes moved to Lincoln City in 1991, and she enjoyed crocheting.
Surviving are her husband, Jay W. Papke of Lincoln City; three sons, Jeff Shepherd of Lincoln City, Joe Wargo and Dan Shepherd, both of Burlingame, Calif.; a brother, Larry Handley of Lincoln City; and a sister, Virginia Handley of San Francisco.
No services are scheduled.
Marvin L. Bagby
Marvin Lewis Bagby, 76, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 in Corvallis at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Marvin worked as a log truck driver for Loran Golly for 30 years, was a member of Salmon River Grange for 30 years, and was a charter member of the Elks Lodge.
He was a very good mechanic and fixer-upper, loved dory fishing, crabbing, hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Norma; two sons, Kenneth Wayne Bagby and Keith Rodger Bagby; two grandchildren, Jacob T. Bagby and Lana R. Bagby; a sister Beverly Louskin in Washington; and two brothers, Norman Bagby in Washington and Curtis Bagby in Mexico.
There will be no funeral services.
Elaine Keirsey
Elaine Keirsey, 73, of Otis, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003.
She was born Feb. 19, 1929 in Mackie, Idaho, and moved to Salem in 1941. She lived in Mill City in the 1950s and taught kindergarten in Mill City while her husband help build Detroit Dam. From 1984-1999 they lived in Yuma, Arizona most of the year, living in Lincoln City during the summer.
Elaine was a member of the Elks and volunteered at the Lincoln County Library. She enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, and loved little children.
Surviving are her daughters, Mary Blevins and Gloria Roby, both of Portland, and Cecilia Chopin of Beaverton; three sisters, Madeline Main of Silverton, and Wanda Esplin and Nina Lamb of Salem; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Roy S. Keirsey, whom she married
July 8, 1946, preceded her in death Jan.1 5, 1999.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Shilo Inn in Lincoln City.
Waddle Funeral Home in Stayton handled the arrangements.
Florine Nelson
Florine Nelson, 76, formerly of Newport, went to the loving arms of her Lord in heaven on Monday afternoon, Dec. 16, 2002.
She was born Elva Florine Robinson on April 10, 1925, in Pasadena, Calif. Florine was the beloved wife of Dean “Smoky” Nelson who preceded her to heaven in 1997.
She died surrounded by her children. With her in their arms she is survived by Charlene Clowes of Las Vegas, Nev., Delbert Clowes of Lebec, Calif.; Charles (Gloria) Clowes, Marble Hill, Mo., Ron (Jackie) Clowes, Bakersfield, Calif., Eldon (Mary Anne) Clowes of Gleneden Beach, Ore., Jeanne (Leo) Woodfin with whom she resided in Milwaukie, Ore.; Wendy Darting of Milwaukie, Ore., GeeGee Cheeks of Longmont, Colo., Robert (Jean) Darting of Toledo, Wash., and Colleen (Dan) Miller of Nampa, Idaho.
She is also survived by her two sisters, Mary Virginia Richards of Fairbanks, Alaska and Edith Marie Hallen of Glendale, Calif.
Florine was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond Chirby and Delbert Robinson.
She was also preceded in death by two of her children, Ralph Darting in January 1970 and Bobbi Darting Crescenzi in October 1992.
A beloved and fun-filled Grandma, Florine loved any and all time she spent with her 30 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She always had open arms and held them close to her heart.
Throughout her life she worked very hard in a variety of jobs, mostly in the food service industry. She was very active in her church, the Church of the Nazarene in Oregon City, and before the Church of the Nazarene in Newport. She volunteered for Loaves and Fishes and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion near Big Bear Lake, Calif. Florine had many friends. She had a twinkle in her eyes, a beautiful smile and a laughter that was contagious.
Florine was also a homemaker and sewed and crocheted and cooked to the envy of all.
Dear Mother, you are the heart and soul of our family and will forever be with us.
Services were held December 18, 2002 in Oregon City, with burial at Eureka cemetery in Newport.
Leota A.A. Tuttle
Leota Augusta Albertina Tuttle, 96, of Lincoln City, died Saturday, July 20, 2002.
She was born March 30, 1906 in Watertown, Neb. On April 2, 1923 Leota married
Orvel Earl Tuttle in Sheridan Ore.
Leota worked for many years as a department store and grocery store sales clerk in Medford. She also worked as a bookkeeper at the California-Pacific Gas Co. in Medford for 17 years until her retirement. Leota resided in Medford from 1945 to 1995. She also worked in her daughter's business in San Francisco and learned to use a computer at the age of 72.
Writing poetry and playing the piano were her main hobbies.
In 1943 she received an Individual Sales Performance Award from Sears. In 1971 she received a certified for 17 years of outstanding service from the gas company; and in 1990 she received an Award of Appreciation from Medford Community Center for 2,224 hours of community service, as well as a Silver Poet Award.
Surviving are her daughter, Janet L. Smith of Neotsu; a son, Robert D. Tuttle of Medford; brothers, Clarence Schukar of Sheridan and Milton Schukar of Willamina; a sister, Selma King of North Bend; a grandson, Ralph Smith of Portland; granddaughters Susan Smith of Portland and April Caron of Everett, Wash.; great-grandsons Darrel Smith and Kevin Smith, both of Beaverton; and one great-great-grandson Dawson Smith of Beaverton.
Preceding Leota in death were her husband, Orvel, in 1968 and a daughter, Joyce, in September 2001.
No services are to be held, with disposition by cremation and remains interred at Memory Gardens in Medford.

Evelyn Gruhlke
Mrs. Evelyn Gruhlke, a lifelong Oregon resident, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at the age of 89.
She was born in Scio, Oregon on Feb. 12, 1913 to J.F. Kukaska and Ludmilla Tomispek, and had five sisters and two brothers.
In 1930 she and Alfred Gruhlke were united in marriage in Portland, Ore. Evelyn was head cook at Reed College until she retired at age 65. They had lived in the same house in Milwaukie for 67 years, since 1930. She and Al loved the beach and swam quite a lot.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Neil Gruhlke and wife Carol of La Pine; a daughter, Laura Steyaert and husband Ray of "Nestucca Bend" at Beaver; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.
At the decedent's request she is to be cremated with no services.

Donald E. Aase
Donald Edward Aase, 65, died Monday, July 22, 2002 of lung cancer. He was born April 9, 1937 in Northwood, Iowa, and graduated from Willamina High School in 1955. Mr. Aase spent 13 years in the National Guard, achieving the rank of staff sergeant.
In 1973 he married
Delores L. Trussell. He spent 33 years in the Gleneden Beach/Lincoln City area. Don had been employed as a bartender at The Pines Restaurant and Bar in Lincoln City.
Survivors include his wife, Delores; sons, Douglas Edward and Clyde Shane Aase; step-sons Bruce, Billy and Brian Trussell; sisters, Joann Shatterly, Marylee Fox and Sharon Kidder; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Preceding him in death were his parents Joseph Aase and Juliette Mostrom-Aase; and a brother Duane Aase.
Private services were held, and a private scattering at sea will take place at a later date.
Heritage Memorial, Portland, handled the arrangements.
Ruthe V.M. Bennett
In loving memory of Ruthe V. Morkert Bennett, 77, who died Monday, July 22, 2002.
She was born June 11, 1925 to Ed and Velma Lambert in Montana.
In 1945 Ruthe married
Ted Morkert who died in 1971; she then married
Noah (Nick) S. Bennett in 1977, who died in 1993.
She owned Ruthe's Time Station from 1969 to 1974, where she raised birds and rabbits. She also worked at the Elks, The Pines and "The Wreck" at different times in her life.
Ruthe was preceded in death by a brother, Lenny, and a sister, Lelia. She is survived by sisters Mabel, Edna and Judy, all of Montana.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Dale Morkert, in 1956, and a daughter, Myrna, in 2001. Her surviving children are Joy Bigson of Hot Springs, Montana; Barbara and Lyle Vance of Lincoln City; and Mickey and Glenda Morkert of Lincoln City.
Ruthe had 16 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 1, 2002 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3565 W. Devils Lake Road, Lincoln City.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln City Food Pantry, Lincoln City Reading Program or My Sisters' Place.
Gloria Lois Porter Thorpe
Gloria Lois Porter Thorpe passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the age of 74.
Born January 26, 1928, in Paterson, New Jersey, Gloria is survived by her husband, John; children, Dianne, Tony, Heather and Kimberly; and grandchildren, Stephanie, Alex, Julian, Anastacia, Mia and Gabby.
Her son, Kevin, preceded her in death on April 19, 1973.
A celebration of Gloria's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2002, at St. James Episcopal Church in Lincoln City.
In lieu of flowers, in remembrance of Gloria, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society and/or Samaritan North Lincoln Hospice.
