Everett Jesse Cantrall
Everett Jesse Cantrall, 75, a resident of Grass Valley, died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.
He was born March 8, 1928, in Ontario, the oldest of three children to Archie Walter and Eva LeVeta (Everett) Cantrall. He was raised in Grass Valley and graduated from Moro High School in the Class of 1946.
He worked at his parent’s grocery store in Grass Valley, and was the owner/operator of the store from the mid-60’s until the late 70’s. He sold the store and he went to work for Albertsons in The Dalles until his retirement in the early 90’s.
He was an active charter member of the Sherman County Lion’s Club since 1959, and was awarded the “Dedicated Humanitarian Award” in 1999. He enjoyed his family, travel and sports.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Cook-Duncan, Grass Valley, whom he married Sept. 18, 1949 in Grass Valley; three sons, Richard Allen Cantrall, Portland; DeWayne and his wife, Lianne Cantrall, Eugene; Robert Daniel and his wife, Deborah Lynn Cantrall, Seattle; three grandchildren, Jeff Kent Cantrall, Eugene; Jodi Dawn Guliuzza, Moscow, Idaho; Michael Everett Cantrall, Seattle; his brother, Gene and his wife, Camielle Cantrall, Portland and his sister, Sharon and her husband, Jim Rhodda, Salem.
Funeral services will be held at the Grass Valley Baptist Church on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. with Asa Jenson officiating. Public interment will follow at the Grass Valley Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Sherman County Lion’s Club, Sight and Hearing Fund.
Vernon D. Nelson
Vernon (Vern) D. Nelson, 84, a resident of Sportsman’s Park near Wamic died at the Oregon Veterans Home on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003 after a brief illness. He had resided at the OVH for a year.
He was born Sept. 12, 1919 in Baker City, the oldest of two sons to Clato Young and Elsie Nelson.
He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific and was a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, gardening and dancing.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1972 and then was employed by C.Y.’s House of Samples for five years. He retired to Sportsman’s Park and became a snowbird and traveled to Arizona where some years later he met and married his wife, Lois.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, Sportsman’s Park; four children, Vern Nelson Jr. and his wife, Maggie, Portland; Roger and Jeff Nelson, both of Gresham; and Michael Nelson, Forest Grove; granddaughters, Stephanie, Emily, Natasha and Whitney, and his brother, C. Y. Nelson and his wife, Donna.
Memorials may be made to the Oregon Veterans Home, 700 Veterans Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058. His request was that no flowers be sent.
Memorial services will be held at the Wamic American Legion Post No. 135 on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. with a potluck to follow.
Bradford William Percey
Bradford William Percey, 64, a resident of The Dalles, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at his home.
He was born July 28, 1939 in Shaftsbury, Vt., to Bradford and Isabella Lucina (Harrington) Percey and came to Oregon with his family as a child, settling in the Eugene area.
Following his graduation from Willamette High School in Eugene he joined the U.S. Navy and served for four years before returning home and working as a taxi driver for several years. He later worked for Georgia Pacific Industries, serving as a dryer tender in several of their plywood manufacturing facilities in the mid-Willamette valley for over 30 years before retiring.
He married Martha Moore in Vancouver, Wash., in 1960; they were later divorced.
He enjoyed league bowling, boating and fishing, feeding wild birds, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his children: a son Lionel Percey, Eugene; daughters Angela Smith, The Dalles; Peggy McKibben, Eugene; Pamela Rogers, Brownsville; and Cheryl Percey, Albany; one sister, Edna, Veneta; his grandchildren Scotty and Patricia Neet, Angela Smith, Matrisha Percey, Curtis McKibben, Justin and Jason Correia, Zachary, Danielle and Ryan Rogers, Ryan, Jacob and Tony Gonzalez; his great-grandchildren, Hannah and Caleb Smith and Michael Hart, and several aunts and uncles in Vermont.
At his request no public services will be held. The family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the disposition of his ashes Saturday, Nov. 1.

Faith Doris Lindfors
Faith Doris Lindfors, a resident of Goldendale, born July 23, 1920, passed away at the age of 83 at her home in Goldendale on Oct. 23.
Preceded in death by sisters Ruth Munroe and Nevada Bidwell, she is survived by husband Rolf Lindfors, son Daniel Lindfors, daughter Sharon Broome, granddaughters Lynnette and Crystal Broome and Jennifer Pattee and two great-granddaughters. She is also survived by twin sister Hope Prince, brother Alan D. Munroe, and sister Meridith Matula.
Memorial services will be held in the Goldendale Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
Tallie Marie Birge
Tallie Marie Birge, 88, a resident of The Dalles, died at her home on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003.
She was born June 25, 1915 in Mabel, Minn., the sixth of eight children to Magnus and Laura (Larson) Gjertson and was raised on a farm near Backus, Minn.
She married Jesse Herman Birge June 1, 1937, in Walker, Minn. and they lived in Minnesota until moving to Parkdale in March 1952. They moved to The Dalles in the spring of 1954.
She worked as a nurse’s aide at Columbia Basin Care Facility for 14 years in the 1960s and 70s.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she volunteered countless hours, including serving as Chairman of The White Cross Mission Circle for 25 years. She also volunteered at Judson Baptist College, and Child Evangelism Fellowship. She enjoyed making quilts, crocheting and making bandages for her Mission Circle. She also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and her "Atlanta Braves." Her greatest joy, though, was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Rev. Frank Haas, The Dalles; four sons, Robert and his wife, Sharon, Troutdale; Harold, The Dalles; Douglas and his wife, Susan, Monmouth; Jesse and his wife, Kim, The Dalles; nine grandchildren, Pamela, Janel, Nathan, Rachel, Lisa, Michelle, Shawna, Thomas and Joshua; 18 great-grandchildren, her sister, Lillian N. Meech, Fort Gibson, Okla. and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Gjertson, Brookings, S.D. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse H. Birge on Nov. 8, 1993; five brothers and a sister.
Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Frank Haas officiating. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Threemile Road at 1:30 p.m. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home are in care of arrangements.

Esther Sarah Applegate Potter
Esther Sarah Applegate Potter, 94, a resident of The Dalles, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 at her home.
She was born in a log cabin in Ione, Wash. on Sept. 30, 1909. She met Ray Blaine Potter on July 3, 1928 and they were married May 31, 1931.
They moved to Hines in 1935 and lived there until moving to Dufur in 1947, where they lived until his death in 1991.
She had recently moved to Flagstone Retirement Community in The Dalles.
She had been active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekahs, and the Dufur Garden Club.
Survivors include her sons, Donald Potter of Denver, Colo. and Gary Potter of John Day, and her daughter Yvonne Lindhorst of West Linn, 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Oddfellows Threemile Cemetery (formerly Parklawn Cemetery) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 with Asa Jenson presiding.
A remembrance gathering will follow at 2 p.m. at the Dufur Methodist church for all who wish to attend. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
Henry ‘Hank’ Detlef Struck, Jr.
Henry “Hank” Detlef Struck, Jr., 74, a resident of Rufus, died in an auto accident on Interstate 84 near Biggs Junction on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003.
He was born April 30, 1929 in Winner, S.D., the oldest of three children to Henry Detlef and Florence Struck.
He grew up in Worley, Idaho and married Joyce Johnson of Worley on July 15, 1951 in Superior, Mont. They were later divorced.
He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict then worked heavy construction as a sandblaster-painter. He worked on dams including theGrand Coulee, John Day, Bonneville and The Dalles dams on the Columbia River.
He enjoyed sports, basketball, country music, traveling in his RV, working on cars and fixing things.
He was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.
He is survived by children, Clayton Struck, New Orleans, La.; Cynthia and husband, Larry Marchant, Home Valley, Wash.; and Myron and wife, Sheila Struck, Vancouver, Wash.; granddaughter, Shelly and husband Jason Hoyt, Spokane.
At his request, no public funeral services will be held.
Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
Remembrances may be made to a charity of choice.
Darrell Leon Wageman
Darrell Leon Wageman, 60, a resident of The Dalles, died at his home on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003.
He was born Jan. 15, 1943 in Twin Falls, Idaho, the second of four children to Phillip and Bonita Josephine (Jack) Wageman.
He lived in Idaho and moved to the Hermiston area in 1952 and then to The Dalles in 1953. He attended The Dalles High School with the Class of 1962.
After high school, he worked for Harvey Aluminum in The Dalles and then moved to Portland and worked for M.F.C.
He joined the Boilermaker's Union and worked until he became disabled. He returned to The Dalles in the early 1980s.
He is survived by his mother, Bonita J. Wageman, The Dalles; three brothers, Larry, Tacoma, Wash; Denny, The Dalles; and Clifford, Portland; one adopted brother, Gary Couture, Alaska; his children from his previous spouse, Kitty, Roxanne and Tracey.
Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 at 4 p.m. Private interment will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Threemile Road.
Raymond Alvin Nodurft
Raymond Alvin Nodurft, 85, a resident of The Dalles, died at the Oregon Veterans Home on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003.
He was born May 29, 1918, in Lowden, Iowa, the third of five children to Marion Alvin and Sophia Marie (Proesch) and grew up in Durant, Iowa.
He married Eulalia Jean Wells on May 6, 1939, in Durant and they lived there until World War II. He served in the US Navy from January 1944 to October 1945, and then returned to Durant to work construction and carpentry. In 1961, the family moved to The Dalles, where he continued his trade in carpentry and construction.
In 1975, he retired from work and the carpenter’s union and he and his wife moved to Tygh Valley, they returned to The Dalles in 1998.
He was a charter member of the Moose Lodge and longtime member of the Eagles Lodge and American Legion. After retiring, he learned to golf, still enjoyed woodworking and snow birded to Yuma, for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eulalia, The Dalles; his son, Lester Nodurft and his wife, Alta, The Dalles; daughters, Patricia Morris, Puyallup, Wash.; and Bonnie Peckenschneider and her husband, Dennis, Bettendorf, Iowa; brother, Earnest “Pete” Nodurft, Florida; sister, Shirley Thede, Dayton, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan.3, 2004, at The Dalles Moose Lodge, with past state president, Jim Mann officiating.
Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
Joe Ivar Soloy
Joe Ivar Soloy, 78, a former resident of The Dalles, died at a hospital in Olympia, Wash. on Feb. 1, 2004.
He was born Aug. 27, 1925 in Bengaugh, Saskatchewan, Canada to Norwegian immigrant parents. He was raised in Kent, Wash.
He served his country in World War II as a radar man on a Coast Guard frigate in the Aleutian Islands.
After the war, he returned to Kent to marry his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Adele Speck.
Fascinated since childhood with flight, he earned his wings in airplanes and later helicopters.
He blazed new trails in several frontiers from the Antarctic to the Arctic, many of those years flying the bush in Alaska.
He started Soloy Corporation in 1970 to bring to reality some of his many ideas for better aircraft. He remained chairman of the board until his death.
His recognition as a Pathfinder at the Boeing Museum of Flight is one of many honors bestowed upon him as a result of his accomplishments in the aircraft industry. As recently as December of 2003, he was inducted into the National Agricultural Aviation Association Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, his three children Patty Soloy, Chris Soloy, and Jan Soloy; six grandchildren Jesse, Mariah, Lindsey, Evan, Matthew and Samuel.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Chehalis.
