Mary Louise Piper (Steinhauer) Bailey
Mary Louise Piper (Steinhauer) Bailey, 83, died on Thursday, May 7, 2009 in Corvallis.
She was born in Lakeview on Sept. 30, 1925 to C. Edna Moss Piper and Raymond B. Piper.
She grew up on the family farm in Lakeview where her family raised cattle, chickens and alfalfa.
Mary graduated from Lakeview High School in 1943 and graduated from Oregon State College (now OSU) in 1947 with a BS in Education.
She taught one year and was a substitute teacher for about 10 years at Triangle Lake School.
Beginning in the 1960s, Mary wrote the Greenleaf column for the West Lane News for over 20 years.
Mary was a homemaker, Mother, confidant, Sunday School teacher, served on the Missions Board for Triangle Lake Memorial Community Church, helped adults and children learn to read and served as Sr. Services Outreach Coordinator in Junction City.
She was married to Edward A. Steinhauer from 1947 to 1983 and was married to Gerald D. Bailey from September 1988 until his death in 2006.
Mary enjoyed family history, writing, crewel embroidery, calligraphy, square dancing, travel, playing the harmonica and piano.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Edward A. Steinhauer and Gerald D. Bailey; son Daniel in 1985; sisters Jane Tracy in 1988 and Doris Amaral in 2007.
Survivors include her sons Steven of Deadwood and Samuel of Blachly; daughter Maria Keltner of Corvallis; sisters Edna Hedberg of Brookings and Betty Cooper of Newport; grandchildren Scott, Samantha, and Chad of Blachly, Miranda and Kacy Jo of Corvallis; great-grand-children Taylor and Dylan of Blachly.
Mary was a member of the 1st Christian Church of Junction City, 1250 Nyssa St., where a memorial celebration of Mary's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009.
Kevin Lee 'Kelly' Goff
Kevin Lee 'Kelly' Goff, 50, died at the Lake District Hospital from natural causes on Saturday, July 4, 2009.
Kelly was born to Alvin and Evelyn (Long) Goff in Lakeview on July 21, 1958.
He grew up in Lakeview and was a graduate of Lakeview High School.
He could do any job in a sawmill and his last position was saw filer for Fremont Sawmill.
Kelly dearly loved Eastern Oregon's high desert country.
He spent countless hours just hanging out on the desert, hunting the desert mule deer and fishing the numerous lakes and streams of Lake County.
When he wasn't out on the desert, you could probably find him on the softball diamond, enjoying a soft-pitch game.
His marriage to Jamie Harvey ended in divorce.
He is survived by mother, Evelyn Goff, sons, Taylor and Tanner Goff of Butte, Mont. and brother, Greg Goff of Corvallis.
He was preceded in death by his father, Al.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Lakeview Eagle's Lodge.
A potluck dinner will be served in the Lodge following the service.

Marguerite 'Margie' Elaine Schrader
Marguerite 'Margie' Elaine Schrader, 73, passed away on July 2, 2009 at Lake District Hospital after a brief illness.
Margie was born on Feb. 29, 1936 in San Diego, Calif. to Jacob William and Anna Jean (Loscutoff) Susoev who had immigrated from Russia shortly after the Bolshevik Revolution.
She grew up in the Russian section of San Francisco and graduated from Mission High School in that city.
She went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Foothill College.
Margie then went to work at GE for a short period before becoming a senior department secretary at SRI International in the minerals department.
Margie moved to Lakeview in 1980 with her fiancee Bill and they were married in 1981.
In Lakeview, Margie worked for Warren Maxwell Insurance until his death, then as an insurance agent for Midland Empire Insurance.
In 1994 she and Bill opened and operated Goose Lake Computing, the first computer store in Lakeview and pioneered the first locally available dial-up internet access.
She retired about 10 years later.
Margie enjoyed sewing, gardening, camping and traveling.
She volunteered at the long term care facility for many years.
Margie was well loved by many in the community who had computer or insurance business with her.
She had no children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William and Yasha Susoev; sisters, Jeannette Hall and Paula Pappin.
She is survived by brother, Ivan Susoev and former husband and loving friend, Bill.
A memorial service will be held at Desert Rose Funeral Chapel on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m.
Inurnment will be in the Sunset Cemetery.

David Sollit Lofts
David Sollit Lofts, 83, died on Thursday, July 2, 2009, following a short illness.
He was born Oct. 23, 1926, in Portland to Hilma and Arthur Lofts.
David lived in Lakeview in 1953 and again in 1958 developing rock sources and crushing plants.
David grew up in Hood River with his brother Bill, fondly known to family as Mick.
Dave was involved in the family aggregate dredging and crushing business driving truck and working with his father and brother.
Growing up there are many stories of him hiking, hunting, fishing and climbing Mount Hood and adventures at Lost Lake.
He used to say the best water was Hood River water right off the mountain.
Dave loved to swim, and told stories of swimming the Columbia River with his dogs Toke and Lucky.
In 1944 at the age of 17 years Dave entered in the Navy V-12 program at Willamette University, subsequently attended the Navy Ordinance School and was discharged in 1948 with a rank of Seaman First Class.
His naval service took him to the South Pacific during World War II.
In 1950 he enlisted in the US Army ROTC program at Oregon State.
He was discharged in 1954 as a 1st Lieutenant.
During that time he led 17 patrols into enemy territory in Korea during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Dave went to both Willamette University and then Oregon State College.
Dave played nose guard at 165 pounds for the Oregon State football team in the early 50's with the likes of Herman Clark and Len Younce (both 200 pounders).
He also swam on the swim team at OSU before he played football.
Dave married Ada Jean Packard in June 10, 1950.
They had four children, Karen, Scott, David and Cindy.
Their life together took them all over Oregon, Guam, Hawaii, Honduras, Taiwan and back to Oregon.
Dave's life was centered around his family, and his career in the concrete and aggregate business, where he always seemed to be out front.
He brought the first pre-stressed concrete to Maui, and was an inventor of designing more efficient systems for concrete and aggregate production.
He was often a man ahead of his time.
He would spend hours drawing plants and designing the best way to drill, shoot, crush and screen rock.
He never met a deposit of basalt that he didn't love.
On Oct. 18, 1982, Dave married Barbara Fleetwood in Winnemucca, Nev.
Dave was preceded in death by his mother and father, Hilma and Arthur Lofts; son Scott; grandson Chetty; and many friends.
Dave is survived by his children David Lofts, Karen Jarboe and Cindy Witzel; his wife Barbara; brother, Bill Lofts; sons-in-law Chet Jarboe and John Witzel; grandchildren April, Tami, and JoAnna Jarboe, and Wilson, Colton, and Laurel Witzel; great-grandchildren Maya, Kara, Josie and Jack.
Dave will be remembered for his strong and gregarious character, his humor and wit.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 16, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Portland.
Graveside services and interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Willamette National Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will follow at his son's, David Lofts, house.

Genevieve Melissa Elder
Genevieve Melissa Elder, 87, passed away on Saturday, Sept 26, 2009 in Lakeview.
She was born Nov. 10, 1921 in Eugene to Ward and Blanch (Boring) Graves.
The family moved to Lakeview when she was about five years old.
Gen loved Lakeview, but she always kept a piece of the Willamette Valley in her heart and enjoyed returning to the Eugene area for visits, where she took great pleasure in the greenery and flowers, especially the rhoadies that bloom in the spring.
Gen graduated from Lakeview High School as Valedictorian in 1940.
She was a Daly Fund recipient and attended the University of Oregon, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, as well as Mu Phi Epsilon, an international music fraternity.
She was an accomplished violinist and played violin in the symphony orchestra while at the U of O.
She also learned to play piano while attending the university, taking lessons from a faculty member.
Gen earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with a minor in Home Economics in 1944.
She was a proud supporter of the Oregon Ducks, and a lifetime member of the University of Oregon Alumni Assoc.
After becoming engaged on Valentine's Day, 1944, Gen married Douglas M Elder seven months later on Sept 3, 1944, and became a dedicated ranch wife and partner on the T7 Ranch in Valley Falls.
She worked for Dr. Wilbur and later worked in the Lake County Tax Assessor's office.
She was a hard working ranch wife, keeping the large crews fed three times a day, managing the business end of the ranch, as well as taking care of her family.
Doug and Gen enjoyed 56 happy years together before he preceded her in death in November of 2000.
Gen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was active in the Valley Falls Grange, AAUW, Lake County Historical Society, Cowbelles, Lake District Hospital Auxiliary, Tuesday Club and Lady Elks.
She was a 4-H leader and taught sewing classes through the Lake County Extension Office. She was a very talented seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her husband Doug; parents; Sister Eva Quenel; daughter-in-law Cecilia Elder.
Gen is survived by son and daughter-in-law David and Sue Elder of Lakeview; sons John and Philip Elder of Lakeview; daughter Carol Sullivan of Lakeview; grandchildren Ryan Sullivan of Boise, Idaho, Kristin and Jesse Hartman of Boise, Idaho, Lana and Josh Rogers, Allison Elder and Brian Elder of Eugene, Greg and Mallory Elder of Bend, Doug Elder and Chelsea Elder of Portland; great-grandchildren James Rogers and Griffin Hartman; sister-in-law Amanda Barrie of Lakeview; nephew Jimmy Elder of Lakeview; nieces Diana Adams of Lakeview, Mary Millsaps of Orland, Calif., Leslie Quenell-Silverstein of Portland, Judy Carter of Roanoke, Texas, Pam Thompkins of Klamath Falls, Cindy McArthur of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Bindy Collingwood of Sarasota, Fla; cousin Ralph Boring of Eugene; special friends Tag and Mary Lou Howland of Bonanza and lifelong friend Lois Strieby of Lakview; former daughter-in-law Diane Roberts of Lakeview; former son-in-law Jeff Sullivan of Oak Run, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lake County Library Building Fund or First Presbyterian Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Louise J. Grothe
Louise J. Grothe, 79, died peacefully at her daughter's home on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 in Lakeview.
She was born April 9, 1930 in Salinas Calif. to John and Antonietta Caraccioli.
Her parents had a successful dairy business in the Salinas Valley.
Their home was graciously open to many immigrants from the Swiss Italian canton of Ticino.
Louise graduated from Armstrong Business College in Berkeley, Calif.
She worked for the Ulatis Elementary School Dist. as a secretary.
On June 11, 1951 she married Bud Grothe in Gonzales, Calif.
In August of 1965 they relocated to Lakeview.
Louise worked for the Water Users for many years.
Second only to the love for her husband and family, was Louise's love of her home.
She was an accomplished cook and enjoyed gardening, quilting and handwork.
She loved 'making memories' with her three grandchildren.
Louise was very active in her community.
She was a member of St. Patrick Altar Society, the Cowbelles, the Stockgrowers of Lake County, the Oregon Beef Council and the Lakeview Community Theater to name a few.
She was also a 4-H leader and served as state president of the Oregon Cattlewomen's Assoc.
She was predeceased in death by her daughter Lorelei Howland and brother John Caraccioli.
Louise is survived by her husband Bud Grothe of Lakeview; daughter and son-in-law Debra and Jack Vernon of Lakeview; brother and sister-in-law Jim and Pat Caraccioli; brother Raymond Verzasconi; grandchildren Jesse Howland, Ashley and Kent Vernon; many nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be held at Saint Patrick Catholic Church on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 at 11 a.m. followed by burial at the Westside Cemetery.
A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lakeview Hospice, 700 S. J St, Lakeview 97630.

Donald 'Jason' Myrick
Donald 'Jason' Myrick, 38, of Grants Pass passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2009 at the UCSF Medical Center due to complications from a heart transplant.
Jason was born in Medford on April 26, 1971 to Donald Myrick, Jr. and Anne Myrick of Grants Pass.
He was a 1989 Graduate of Grants Pass High School and attended Umpqua and Rogue Community College.
Jason married the love of his life, Rachel Hunt, in November 1997.
They have two beautiful daughters, Tiffany, age 11, and Ashley, age 5.
Jason was recently appointed as the Postmaster of Gold Hill.
Prior to Gold Hill, he served in Gold Beach, Brookings, Medford, Grants Pass and Lakeview.
Jason was an avid waterskier and fisherman.
He was also involved with the Grants Pass Active Club.
Jason is survived by his wife Rachel; daughters Tiffany and Ashley; parents Don and Anne; sister and brother-in-law Alicia and Erik; grandparents Donald F. and Dolores Myrick; father-in-law and mother-in-law George and Rebecca Hunt; many other family members.
A memorial service was held at the Josephine County Fairgrounds Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 with the Rev. John Tucker of the First United Methodist Church officiating.
