Dan Collins
Dan Collins, 83, passed peacefully away in Bend on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Hospice House of Bend.
Dan was born June 26,1925, to Nora and Daniel Collins of Knockbrack,
Banteer, Co. Cork, Ireland,
Dan emigrated to America at the age of 24, having served his apprenticeship at Coleman's Garage in Millstreet, Co. Cork. Upon arrival in the States, he worked as a mechanic at Orange Ford in Albany, New York. A former Lakeview car dealer recruited him to come west and practice his trade. During these years, he also worked at various logging camps as their mechanic. In the early 50's he entered into a partnership with his brother, John. This enterprise was first a repair shop, then went on to become the Dodge-Plymouth agency. In 1958, the brothers acquired the Chevrolet agency. The premise of this agency was destroyed by fire on New Year's Eve 1960. A new building was erected the following year and the General Motors franchise still remains at this same location. Other GM franchises were acquired through the years and additional parcels of adjoining land were purchased to better accommodate the needs of the community. He loved the challenge of a sale and wanted to always provide the best possible service to his loyal customers. In 1986, the GM franchise was sold. In his semi-retirement, Dan got very interested in the construction and 'destruction' business. He built a new home, a new 'storage building' which in 1991, became Dan Collins Ford. Dan operated the Ford store for three years before selling to his daughter, Patsy and her husband Jeff Hall. At the age of 70, Dan developed a new subdivision in Lakeview called Celtic Park. A few years later, he and a contractor built the D.M.V Building. Several other homes were extensively remodeled, also by Dan. He always derived a great sense of satisfaction and enjoyment out of the finished product... a remodeled building or a new, tidy bare lot, ready for whatever business opportunity could be successfully accomplished there. His involvement in service to his community was extensive. It included serving on Lakeview School Budget Committee for many years and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Dan was an active member of Lakeview Rotary for more than 40 years, being named Rotarian of the Year and receiving Rotary's Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was also honored by the Lake County Chamber of Commerce by being the recipient of the First Citizen Award.Dan always enjoyed the Lake County Round-Up and Fair and served on the Round-Up Board of Directors for many years, and then as President in 1984. It was then that he learned to ride a horse. He was chosen to be Grand Marshall in 2007. A loyal member of the Elks Lodge, Dan assisted in the renovation of their building in 1984.
The game of golf was a passion of Dan's, as was gathering with his friends and family. He would often 'light up the room' with his version of the song, 'Danny Boy.' He loved Irish music and dancing the jigs and reels. He and his wife Kit enjoyed traveling to many places. They visited Mexico, Switzerland, Germany, Hawaii, New York, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, cruised to Australia and the Caribbean Islands, but his favorite trip was always to his beloved, Ireland.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Tim Collins of Banteer,
Ireland and Mike Collins of Lakeview.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Kit O'Leary Collins, his daughters and sons-in-laws Patsy and Jeff Hall of Lakeview and children, Daniel, Keli, Kati and Delaney; Maureen and Dave Richardson of Redmond and children, Kaitlyn and Ben; Julia Foley of Vancouver,
Wash. and children Meagan, Ryan and Jack; brother John Collins of Shady Cove; sister Kitty Hamedy of Kanturk, Co. Cork numerous nieces and nephews in both the United States and Ireland.
