William 'Bill' Kovach
William 'Bill' Kovach, 87, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008 at his home in Lakeview from cancer.
Bill was born to Joseph and Rose (Meszaros) in Cleveland, Ohio on Aug. 11, 1921. He grew up in Cleveland where he graduated from high school.
He married Eleanore Gall in Cleveland on May 15, 1943. Six months after their marriage he enlisted into the Air Force where he served as a belly turret gunner. After receiving his honorable discharge, they moved to Los Angeles, Calif. where he graduated from college with a degree in aeronautical engineering. Since Los Angeles was getting too big, they moved to Modesto, Calif. where he went into business for himself as a tool and die maker.
After retirement, they moved to Lakeview in 1993. Soon afterward he became a member of the First Baptist Church. He had faithfully served the Lord he loved for many years.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Bill is survived by his wife Eleanore of Lakeview; son and daughter-in-law, David and Karen Kovach of Ames, Iowa; daughter and son-in-law, Jacque and Ted Richerzerhagen of Walla Walla, Wash.; daughter, Audrey Thomasson of White Stone, Va; brother, Ernest Kovach of Mission Viejo, Calif.; sisters, Debbie Kovach of Palm Springs, Calif. and Lillian Risko of Cleveland, Ohio; Six grandchildren; Four great-grandchildren and numerous other extended family members.
A memorial service was held at the Lakeview First Baptist Church on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Charles 'BUD' Buck
Charles 'BUD' Buck, 97, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at his Klamath Falls home.
Buck was born Dec. 4, l910 in Beatrice, Neb. to Charles H. and Catherine R. (Woods) Buck.
Buck was inducted into the US Army on March 11, 1942 and was honorably discharged Nov. 26, 1945. He served in the European and African theatres as an Army Aircorps Corporal. He had been honored as the oldest US Army Veteran in Klamath County this past Nov. 11, 2007. He earned the Middle Eastern Service Medal, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the American Theatre Medal. He was a refueling operator driving a 4 ton truck hauling heavy equipment, bombs and supplies.
His favorite pastime in later years was camping and traveling with his wife Helen, who he Married in 1977. He also loved to go fishing with his favorite nephew, Robert Wilson of Grants Pass.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; three sisters; two brothers and one nephew.
Survivors include: his wife, Helen of Klamath Falls; stepchildren Richard and Cathy Buck of Bend and Arla and Dick Newman of Klamath Falls; six grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Tuesday Sept. 9, at the Westside Cemetery with the Layne Clifton VFW Post 4070 participating.

Fred James Kaley
Fred James Kaley, 71, died at his home in Lakeview on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 from natural causes.
Fred was born to Arthur and Margaret (Hart) Kaley in Silverton on Dec. 29, 1936. The family moved to Fort Rock in 1950 and Fred boarded with the Murphy family in Paisley while he attended high school. He also worked on the Murphy ranch during the summer months. They later moved to Lakeview, where he graduated from high school in 1954.
He enlisted into the Air Force in January, 1955 and was honorably discharged in December, 1958. After his tour of duty, he worked on various ranches in Lake County until 1964 when he began his career as a body and fender repair man with the Ford Garage. He retired from Collins Motors after 25 years of service.
Fred's marriage to Pat Kemry in 1966 ended in a divorced and then in 1996 he married LaDonna Bowen and she preceded him in death in 2001.
Fred thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and most of all, swapping 'lies' with his many friends.
He is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Michel Kaley of Hazen, N D; brother, Joe Kaley of Diamond Head, Miss.; sister, Jean Maxheimer of Tuppelo, Miss.; grandson, Chayse Kaley; grandson and wife, Keith and Aubrey Kaley; granddaughter Anna Kaley; Great-granddaughter Brittany Kaley and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private inurnment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery with military honors provided by the Lakeview VFW Post 4070.

Bernardine Norton
Benardine Norton, 78, passed away at home on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, with her family at her side.
She was born Dec. 14, 1930 in Lakeview, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Barry) Shanahan.
Benardine attended San Francisco College for Women (Lone Mountain) and received her teaching credentials and degree from San Francisco State University. She was an elementary school teacher in San Francisco.
On Dec. 14, 1957, she married Gerard James Norton. They moved to Orinda in 1962 and raised their family. Benardine's life revolved around her family's activities and she was active in the Santa Maria Parish. Her passion was bridge and once time allowed her, she became a ranked bridge player before illness forced her to scale back her playing time.
After a long battle with emphysema and other related illnesses, Benardine started to receive hospice care until the time of her passing. She was an ardent supporter of her family and was a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. She will be dearly missed by many.
She is survived by: sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Mary Norton of Basking Ridge, NJ and Jeffrey and Tamara of San Ramon, Calif.; Son, Mark Orton of Danville, Calif.; daughter, Marta Cunningham of Lafayette, Calif.; grandchildren, Kathryn and Brandon of Danville and Michayla and Keara of Basking Ridge; sisters, Frances Medeiros of Burlingame, Calif. and June Shanahan of Martinez, Calif.
A Rosary Service was held on Monday, Sept. 8 at Hulls Walnut Creek Chapel and a funeral mass was held on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Santa Maria Church in Orinda. Internment followed the service at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Anthony's Dining Room (SF) or The Hospice of the East Bay.
Barbara Jean Cook Shadduck
Barbara Jean Cook Shadduck, 72, beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, heeded the call of her Heavenly Father and returned home to Heaven after a lengthy illness on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata, Calif. She was surrounded by loving family members and in the prayers of many who knew her at the time of her peaceful death.
Barbara lived many years in Tulelake, Calif. where she graduated from high school and also lived several years in Lakeview. She moved to the Big Lagoon area near Orick, Calif. in 1987, with her loving husband John Shadduck. After working as the switchboard operator at Mad River Community Hospital, she spent her remaining years as a homemaker and enjoyed watching professional football and basketball games with her husband and family. (As a devout Seattle Seahawks fan, she was thrilled to see her team finally make it to the Super Bowl.) Her love of arts and crafts and her many talents were well known, her many creations were lovingly shared with family and friends until her failing health made it impossible to continue. She eagerly listened to those in need and loved to share her insights gained from her many experiences, travels and love of reading and studying.
She was active in the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship church in Orick, fiercely loved God, her church, her country, her family and her many friends.
Barbara is survived by: her devoted husband, John Shadduck of Orick; son, Stacey Shadduck of Portland; daughters, Laura Pendleton of Yakima, Wash. and Jenna Wilson of Howe, Texas; sister, Irene (Ginger) McCambridge of Coarsegold, Calif.; half-sister, Victoria Pace of Burnet, Texas; step-brother, Roy Barr of Molalla; nieces, Tracy Cooke of San Diego, Calif. and Leslie Flores of Norfolk, VA; grandchildren, Gene Pradmore of White Wright, Texas, Ira Pradmore of Bellingham, Wash., Aspen Pendleton of Portland, Autumn Pendleton of Seattle, Wash. and Laura Builta of Citrus Heights Calif; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Tyler and Jessica Pradmore of White Wright, Texas, Saxon and Aiyana Pradmore of Eugene and Trent Builta of Citrus Heights, Calif.
A private memorial service will be held in Orick at a later date.

Dennis Jay DeCaire
Dennis Jay DeCaire, 48, died at his Lakeview home on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 from natural causes.
Dennis was born to Chuck and Myrtle (Williams) DeCaire in Lakeview on July 28, 1960. He grew up in Lakeview and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1978. He then attended OIT where he majored in small engine repair.
He returned to Lakeview and married Ruth Huskey on Nov. 12, 1982.
He was a long time employee of Jim's Saw Shop in Lakeview. He lived in Ohio for a year and worked for John Deere. Upon returning to Lakeview, he worked for Lakeview Motor Sports for a short time. Recently he had been unemployed due to disability.
He enjoyed looking for treasures with his metal detector.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents and sisters, Margaret Bucher and Janice Riddle.
He is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Pat DeCaire of Lakeview and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
At Dennis's request no service will be held.

Harold R. Shultz
Harold R. Shultz, 88, died at the Lake District Long Term Care Facility Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 following a brief illness.
Harold was born April 8, 1920 in Nampa, Idaho to Julius and Nellie (Paulson) Shultz.
He graduated from high school in Nampa and later served in the US Army during WW ll. Harold served his country in the 103rd MP division in France.
Harold worked for his sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Floyd Colwell in their garbage collection business for many years. He also worked and retired from Fremont Sawmill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Floyd Colwell; brother Ed Shultz. There are no known survivors.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Ousley Osterman Huffstutter Funeral Chapel on Friday Oct. 10, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. The interment will follow at the Sunset Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Ousley Osterman Huffstutter Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 8 and Thursday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jackson Ray Spier
Jackson Ray Spier, 10 months, six days, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 in Portland
Jackson was born on Nov. 24, 2007 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene to Shawn and Megan (Griner) Spier.
In that short time he blessed every life he came to know. His bright blue eyes lit up a dark room, and his ear to ear smile made anybody's gloomy day disappear. The joy and happiness he brought to our lives will forever live in our hearts.
He is survived by parents Shawn and Megan Spier of Lakeview; brother Joseph Spier of Lakeview; maternal grandparents Bill and Elaine Hubbard of Eugene; paternal grandparents Donnie and Vicki Spier of Idanha; Maternal great-grandmother Kathy Entorkin of Eugene; maternal great-grandparents Bill and Aline Hubbard of Sutherlin; paternal great-grandmother Nancy Monroe of Idanha; paternal great-grandmother Marlene Cunningham of Taft, Calif.; maternal great-great-grandparents Gene and Daisy Hanger of Sutherlin; uncles Matt of Spokane Wash. and Justin of Nampa, Idaho; aunts Jordan and Jessica of Eugene, Cristie of Corvallis and Abbie of Nampa, Idaho; numerous great-aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 at Elmira Church of Christ in Elmira.

Levern Edwin Trankle
Levern Edwin Trankle, 76, died at the Lake District Hospital from natural causes on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008.
Levern was born to Adolph and Minnie (Hatfield) Trankle on April 26, 1932 in Eugene. He grew up in Myrtle Creek. After high school, he enlisted into the Navy and served honorably during the Korean War. Upon his release from the Navy, he reenlisted into the Air Force and served two tours of duty as a jet mechanic. His most memorable time in the service was his tour in France. After his military service, he settled in Portland where he worked in the ship yards as a machinist.
He will be remembered and missed by many in Lakeview as the man with the parrot riding on his shoulder.
Levern is survived by a sister, Leola Agee of Roseburg; nephew, Royal Ausmus of Lakeview and numerous other nieces and nephews.
At his request no services will be held.

John William Branch
John William Branch, 91, died Tuesday, Oct. 14,2008 in Milwaukie.
John was born to Jesse Elmer and Millie Irene (Smith) Branch on March 12, 1917 in Lakeview. He attended school in Valley Falls and Lakeview. He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1936.
He was married to Elma Butler in Reno, Nev. on June 10, 1937.
He worked in the logging industry in Lakeview before moving to Paisley in 1946 to purchase an interest in a ranch, which he operated for 30 years, selling it in 1976 to the O'Leary ranch. He worked for 16 years as a livestock brand inspector for the Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1998.
He served for 20 years on the Paisley School Board and also served on the Lake County I.E.D. Board, the Paisley City Council and the Lake County Cemetery District Board for eight years.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and his daughter, Glenda Branch.
John is survived by his wife, Elma; daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Bob Stehn of Milwaukie; sister Alice Sims of Milwaukie; grandchildren, Mark and Melissa Stehn of McMinnville, Julie and Ron Dowhaniuk of Milwaukie and Tammy and Dannie Steffens of Sherwood; nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Paisley Community Center in Paisley. Interment will be held at the Paisley Cemetery. Following the committal, a potluck dinner will be served in the Community Center.
