S. Gordon Smith
SMITH, S. Gordon — Age 97, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2006. He was born on December 11, 1908, in Pocatello, Idaho. He worked as an Auto dealer, until his retirement in 1968. He moved from Lakeview, Oregon, to Roseburg in 1951, to become partner in Lockwood Motors. Bought a home at 322 W. Chapman in 1952, and lived there 54 years until his death. He sponsored American Legion baseball team throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s. He was a member of Kiwanis and the Roseburg Country Club. He attended Oregon State University. He was member of Sigma Nu fraternity and Oregon State varsity baseball team as a left handed pitcher. Gordon graduated in 1931 from University of Kansas. Began Ford experience in 1932, as salesman for Balsiger Motors in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Married Mary Sinclair in 1935 in Portland, Oregon, and established Gordon Smith Motors in Lakeview in 1938. Gordon was an inspiration to everyone he met. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Gordon knew and befriended generations of people from Roseburg, Lakeview, Klamath Falls and everywhere in the western states. He remained in touch with them throughout their lives. He was an icon in Laurelwood, at Stewart Park for baseball games, on the Umpqua fishing, hunting in Eastern Oregon, at various coffee shops for conversation and wherever his friends would gather. In his later years, while sightless and living alone, he remained engaged in the lives of family and friends and continued to travel well into his 90s. Gordon was always prepared to discuss the news, business, sports and politics. Following Mary's death in 1995, his wonderful caregiver, Anita Lokan, became his eyes and his companion as he continued to enjoy life and the people around him. All who knew him realize that they were fortunate to have! Gordon in their lives. He is survived by his son, Stephen S. Smith and daughter-in-law, Paula K. Smith of Palo Alto, California; grandson, Kyle S. Smith and granddaughter, Kendall C. Smith both of San Francisco, California. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Irene Smith, in 1995; brother, Roderick Smith and sister, Aileen Saunders. A memorial will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2006, at 5:30 p.m., at, 322 W. Chapman, Roseburg. Contributions may be made to the Smith Family Foundation, a non-profit charitable trust at 321 Melville Ave. Palo Alto, California, 94301. These gifts will be forwarded to That Man May See to support research in ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco. Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is in Charge of the arrangements.

MENTZER, Leta F. — She was born on July 12, 1920, and passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, October 1, 2006. She was married to Arnold Mentzer on July 7, 1980. Dorris Mowry
MOWRY, Dorris — Age 86, of Elkton, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2006. She was born on December 30, 1919, in Elkton, Oregon, to parents, Leslie and Beatrice Hancock. She spent a short time in Colorado and a short time in Cottage Grove, Oregon. She graduated from Elkton High School. She married Russell Mowry in Drain, Oregon, on October 27, 1938. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, working puzzles, going to the mountains to see the deer, cooking and traveling on vacations. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Palmer of Roseburg, Oregon; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son, David in 1972. A graveside memorial will be held on Friday, October 6, 2006, at 2 p.m., at the Elkton Cemetery, in Elkton. Contributions may be made to, the American Heart Association.

HORN, Jessie Lee Jr. —A celebration of life for Jessie Lee Horn Jr. will be held today, Tuesday, October 3, 2006, at 3 p.m., at the First Church of the Nazarene, Medford, with Pastor Bob Roth officiating. Burial was in Eagle Point National Cemetery. Mr. Horn, 75, of Medford and Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2006, in Medford. He was born on December 1, 1930, in Webb, Mississippi, to Jessie Lee and Minnie Bell (Englebert) Horn. He spent most of his life in Oregon between Roseburg and Medford. Jessie found great joy in ministering and giving of his time for over 30 years in nursing homes and at the Roseburg Gospel Rescue Mission. He loved to spend time riding motorcycles, fishing, playing guitars and wood working. He owned and operated Horn’s Custom Cabinets for over 30 years. (“Thanks, Dad, for all the sturdy furnishings that will last us a lifetime”). Survivors include his former wife, Ramona Jean Lewis; four children, Beverly Joyce Marshall; Alan Wayne Horn; Carol Elaine Sanchas; Janet Kristine Bollweg; a sister, Elizabeth Haney; a brother, James Henry Horne; seven grandchildren; Jason, Amy, Jennifer, Andy, April, Sarah, Angela and four great great-grandchildren, Elijah, Lydia, Gabriel and Kaleb. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lucille Copeland and a brother, Carl Edward Horn. Robert N. Gunderson
GUNDERSON, Robert N. — Age 83, of Astoria, Oregon, died on Monday, October 2, 2006, in Warrenton, Oregon. He was born on January 4, 1923, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, the son of Alfred E. and Grace Duffee Gunderson. He was raised in the Bonners Ferry area until moving to San Bernardino, California, where he graduated from the San Bernardino High School. He then enlisted in the US Navy in July of 1942, where he served aboard the USS Kendrick. He was honorably discharged in July of 1948, with the rank of Quartermaster. He then settled in Roseburg, Oregon, where he met and was later married to the former LaVerne Duke on November 20, 1948, in Lubbock, Texas. They settled in Roseburg, where he worked as a salesman at Sears, Curtis Brother’s Furniture store , at Mock’s Motor Company selling automobiles, and also for the Addcox Electric & Heating Company. He retired in Roseburg in 1984, where they lived until moving to Astoria in June of 1999. Mr. Gunderson enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture, fishing, traveling and sightseeing, and automobiles. He was an avid football fan, following the Roseburg Indians, Oregon Ducks, and Oregon State Beavers where he was a member of the Beaver Boosters Club. He was a life member of the VFW, Moose Lodge, a past member of the Masonic Lodge, and his church home was at the Astoria First Assembly of God Church. Survivors in addition to his wife, LaVerne include his daughters, Linda Hamar and her husband, Rev. James Hamar of Astoria; Gail Freeman of Oregon City, Oregon; sister, Evelyn Addcox & her husband, Jim of Bellevue, Washington; niece and nephew, Cheryl Kuhn and Rob Addcox Grandsons, Kyle, Kirk, Kory, and Kraig Hamar all of Astoria; two granddaughters, Jamie Linn Hamar of Astoria. And Taylor Freeman of Oregon City.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy. Viewing and visitation hours will be held on Friday, October 6, 2006. from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., at the First Assembly of God Church in Astoria. Funeral services with military honors will follow at the church at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. A private burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Astoria First Assembly of God Church. Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Edith Aimeda “Meda” Martineau
MARTINEAU, Edith Almeda “Meda” — Age 86, of Sutherlin, Oregon, died on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at her home. Services will be held at the L.D.S. Church at 351 St. Johns in Sutherlin, on Friday, October 6, 2006, at 10 a.m. Viewing will be held at the Chapel of the Firs Funeral Home in Sutherlin, on Thursday, October 5, 2006, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., and again at 9 a.m. at the L.D.S. Chapel. Mrs. Martineau was born on February 1, 1920, in Webb, Cochise County, Arizona, the daughter of Helen Edith Higgins and Martin Burrell Williams. She and her husband, Ivins (now deceased) moved to Sutherlin in 1961 and owned a ranch on Banks Creek Road. In 1999, she moved into Sutherlin. Mrs. Martineau was preceded in death by her husband, Ivins Martineau, who passed away in December 1999. Survivors include her two children, daughter, Marcella Roe of Redding, California and son, William (Bill) of Rice Hill, Oregon; sister, Helen Zufelt of Sacramento, California; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. Arrangements are being handled by Chapel of the Firs in Sutherlin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your humanitarian charity.
Daniel Dewayne Morris
MORRIS, Daniel Dewayne — Born September 21, 1945 in Benkelman, Nebraska, the youngest of four boys, to Cody Marshall and Helen Blair Morris. In the late 40’s the family moved to Junction City , Oregon, and then to Morgan Hill, California in 1956, to run a chicken farm. In the mid 60’s they moved again, this time to the Medford, Oregon area. Dan went to high school there, then joined the Air Force and serving from 1964-1966 as a Radar Operator in the Arctic Circle. he returned from active duty Airmen 3rd class and settled in the Santa Cruz, California area, where he married Maryette Ladley and started a family. Dan supported his family by working construction jobs, and buying and remodeling homes. For many years Dan battled many demons and in January 2006 he made it up North to see his mom in Roseburg and brother Sam, shortly there after he returned to California where he lost his battle and is now at peace. Dan is survived by his mother, Helen Blair Morris, brothers; Dave and Sam, children; William (Will), Emily and Danny. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. His children were the loves of his life. His brother Sam remembers his brother as “a proud man, sometimes a hard man, but always as a honest man.” Dan will always be remembered by his walrus mustache and his smile. Meeting Dan on the other side is his father; Cody, brother; Fred, grandma; Dumbare, many aunts and uncles. Have a great journey Dan, we love you. Memorial services will be held at the Roseburg VA Cemetery, October 6,2006 at 1pm. Private reception to follow services.

Kathy is survived by her husband Kyle of Preston; a daughter Cammy of California; and a son Michael of Utah; her mother Sharon Brown and step-father Neil Brown of Roseburg; her grandchildren Xavier, Laquintas and Jonathan and two sisters Carmen McGarver of Portland, Oregon; and Debbie Lively of Roseburg. She will be dearly missed by all her family. Funeral services were held September 21, 2006 at Webb Funeral home in Preston. Graveside services were held on Monday, September 25, 2006 in Reedsport Masonic Cemetery - Reedsport, Oregon.

Margaret ‘Louise’ Allen
ALLEN, Margaret “Louise” — Born on June 30, 1921, and passed away Thursday, September 28, 2006, at a local hospital, in Roseburg, Oregon, with her family at her bedside. She is survived by her beloved husband, Warren T. Allen of Roseburg; four children, Sandra L. Lozar of Eugene, Oregon; Mary E. Bunch of Cheshire; Thomas D. Allen of Sutherlin, Oregon and Terry S. Allen of Roseburg; a brother, Lanny G. Rouse of Albany, Oregon; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both her parents, Spencer D. and Margaret H. Rouse, "Njust" and three brothers, Harvey, Owen and Donald Rouse. As well as two grandchildren, Monty E. Nicklin and Kevin D. Elkins, both of Eugene. She worked as a Dental Assistant for a number of years for Doctor George G. McNeil of Eugene and Doctors Keith Bryant and William Bettis In Roseburg. She was an active member of the Dental Assistants Society for which she served as President for some time and was actively involved in becoming certified and also in the process of requiring certification as a qualification for being hired in the field. Her interests included reading and writing poetry, sewing, crocheting, gardening, Macramé, cooking, baking and entertaining. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, friend, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother and will be missed deeply by her family and friends. There will be a private internment at the Veterans Cemetery in Roseburg.
A Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the Church of God, 4051 N.E. Stephens in Roseburg. A Luncheon will follow. Donations in her memory may be made to the, Mission Fund at the Church of God as listed above.
Richard Harold Snead
SNEAD, Richard Harold — May 3, 1946— October 1, 2006 - A celebration of the life of Richard Snead, 60, of Coquille, Oregon, will be held from noon to 2 p.m., on Sunday, October 8, 2006, at the Red Lion Hotel, 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, in Coos Bay, Oregon. Richard was born on May 3, 1946, in North Bend, Oregon, to M.H. “Dick” and Viola Mack Snead. He died on October 1, 2006 in Coos Bay, Oregon. He graduated from North Bend High School in 1965 and joined the U.S. Navy. Richard married Sande Waletich in 1976 and worked as a millwright in Coos Bay and Roseburg, Oregon. Although he enjoyed traveling with his friends by motorcycle, he loved spending time with his grandchildren the most. Richard is survived by his spouse, Sande of Coquille; son Rick of Corvallis, Oregon; daughter and son-in-law, Erica Carney and Mike of Roseburg; granddaughters, Courtney, Emily and Savannah, all of Roseburg; honorary grandchildren, Christian and Mackenzie, both of Roseburg; sister, Billee Snead Webb of Corvallis; brother-in-law, Lonnie Webb of Corvallis and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Betty Snead Reeve and Harold Reeve of Mapleton, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to, Multiple Sclerosis Society, 104 S.W. Clay St., Portland, Oregon, 97201; or to the charity of one’s choice. Jeanne Elsie Heritage
HERITAGE, Jeanne Elsie — Age 85, of Winston, Oregon, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2006, at her home. She was born on August 4, 1921, in Muncie, Indiana, the daughter of Frank Joseph and Daisy (Harkness) Fehrenbach. Jeanne was raised and educated in Muncie. As a young lady, while working at the local A & W, she met Eugene ‘Gene’ Heritage. They were united in marriage on March 4, 1939, in Kentucky. In 1952, the family moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon and in 1957, settled in Winston, Oregon. They owned and operated a motel in Winston for a few years. Mr. Heritage worked in the timber industry, while Jeanne took care of their family, making a house into a home. She was her daughter’s seamstress and made prom and wedding dresses for them. She loved gardening and was a wonderful cook. They built a home on the edge of Winston, with the entire family helping. In later years, she was the self appointed “supervisor” of Chris in the building of Carolyn’s home. They were members of the Dillard-Winston United Methodist Church. She was a member of TOPS as well as the Roseburg Rebekah’s Lodge Number 41, where she held many offices. Jeanne and Gene enjoyed square dancing. She also enjoyed line dancing, belly dancing and playing bunko. She recently became a member of the Red Hat Society. The family loved exploring Oregon, especially the coast, where they would camp. She is survived by her loving husband of over 67 years, Eugene “Gene’ Heritage of Winston. She also leaves three daughters, Carolyn Brown and her companion, Chris Christensen of Winston; Judy Hroncich and her husband, Tony of Centralia, Washington and Billie Rose McCargar of Eagle Point, Oregon. Jeanne’s grandchildren, are Kenneth Burt and his wife, Wendy of Little Rock, Washington; Kerry Sanford and her husband, Jeff of Chehalis, Washington; Ed Singleton and his wife, Amanda of Rochester, Washington; Brad Singleton of Winlock, Washington; Joseph McCargar and his wife, Stacy of Eugene, Oregon and Jennifer McCargar-Charles and her husband, Jason of Portland, Oregon; her great-grandchildren include, Kathryn, Anna, Ben, Avery and Bayli. She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Violet, Hersey, Rosalyn and Mildred and two brothers, Charles and William. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, October 7, 2006, at the Dillard-Winston United Methodist Church with Pastor Phyllis Stelson officiating. Private interment will be at Roseburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects on Friday, October 6, 2006, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., at Taylor’s Family Chapel. Jo Ellen Olive
OLIVE, Jo Ellen — Age 71, passed away peacefully at a local hospital. She was born to Chester and Doris McConnell on May 2, 1935, in Springfield, Missouri. There she attended grade school and in 1953, graduated from Springfield High School. She then moved to Oregon and began a life-long love affair with the Pacific Northwest and Pete. He was enlisted in the Air Force. As the wife of a military man, she had the opportunities to travel around the world. She enjoyed traveling to such places as Germany, Turkey, Alaska and her favorite place, Hawaii. After traveling for years with her husband they settled in Hansville, Washington. They resided there from 1975 until 1986. When they moved away from Washington, they moved on to Hawaii, where they lived until 1994. Jo loved to work with arts and crafts, she loved to cook many different dishes she had learned to prepare in far away places and she was also a wonderful photographer. She loved all of her overseas tours she shared with her husband. Jo was a fantastic mother and loved dearly her four children. She once received a letter from former President of the United Stated, Richard M. Nixon, thanking her for being an outstanding Air Force Wife. In 1995 Jo and her husband moved from Hawaii to Florida. They lived there until they returned to Oregon in 2005. Jo has enjoyed the last year here in Douglas County. She is survived by her husband, Pete Olive of Glide, Oregon; her daughters, Cindy Peirson and husband, Brent of Roseburg; Martha Weimer and husband, Richard of Lake Havasa, Arizona and Toni Olive of Ocala, Florida; eight grandchildren, Jason, Dusty, Jesse, Alex, Carlie, Emily, Vern and Shannon; three great-grandchildren, Jaden, Landin, and Emma. Jo is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Grant Olive; brother, James and her grandson, Clint. A memorial service is set for Saturday, October 7, 2006, at 11 a.m., at Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses.

Rigutto, Herman (Bill) Anthony — Passed away on Monday, October 2, 2006, of lung cancer. Bill was born on June 21, 1920, in Portland, Oregon. He married Lois Ritchie in 1967 and started a family. They lived 36 years in Portland, five years in Eastern Oregon, seven years, in Eugene, Oregon, three years. in Carson City, Nevada, and 35 years. in Roseburg, Oregon. Bill was also in the United States Army and attended Oregon State University. Mr. Rigutto is survived by his wife, Lois Rigutto; daughter, Lisa Sinnot and husband, Peter; sons, Martin, Rico, Bill, Reno, and Jonathan Rigutto; and son, Richard Heard; sister; Julia Pagan, and husband, Paul; cousins; Fred, and Ray Rigutto, cousins in Italy, Manno, Rozina, Rino, Nevis, Angelo, Christina and Gin, cousins in Holland, Pierre, and Velario. A Mass and Celebration of Life was held on Monday, October 2, 2006, at 2 p.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

GROTE, WILLIS DEAN – Willis Dean Grote passed away on September 24, 2006. He is survived by his mother, Fern Hunt of Roseburg, Oregon; sons, Darrell Grote his wife, Regina of Roseburg; Darren Grote of Wendover, Nevada; Darrek Grote and his wife, Heather of Sutherlin, Oregon; also grand-daughters, Beth and Joanna Grote of Roseburg. Chapel. Mrs. Martineau was born on February 1, 1920, in Webb, Cochise County, Arizona, the daughter of Helen Edith Higgins and Martin Burrell Williams. She and her husband, Ivins (now deceased) moved to Sutherlin in 1961 and owned a ranch on Banks Creek Road. In 1999, she moved into Sutherlin. Mrs. Martineau was preceded in death by her husband, Ivins Martineau, who passed away in December 1999. Survivors include her two children, daughter, Marcella Roe of Redding, California and son, William (Bill) of Rice Hill, Oregon; sister, Helen Zufelt of Sacramento, California; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. Arrangements are being handled by Chapel of the Firs in Sutherlin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your humanitarian charity.
Eleanor (Nell) Ramsey
Ramsey, Eleanor (Nell) — Died in Portland, Oregon, August 11, 2006, after 95 years of life. She was born in Portland, Oregon, on July 15, 1911. She grew up in Chicago, Illinois and California, received her nursing degree from Cal Davis. She married Edmund Ramsey of Carlsbad California in 1935. Ed and Nell came to the Applegate Valley in 1946 and took up dairy farming. In the 1960’s she and Edmund co-founded Ramsey Realty. After retirement, they moved to Brookings, Oregon, and then to Sutherlin, Oregon, in ‘1992. Ed and Nell attended the Presbyterian church in Oakland and enjoyed remodeling their home on Sixth and Maple St. After being widowed in 1995, Nell stayed in Sutherlin until 2000. She moved to the Long Beach peninsula and to Portland in 2004. Nell was a passionate gardener, cook, remodeler, painter, birder, and friend. She treasured life. Her faith and unending enjoyment of study gave her strength of mind, peace and love; all gifts from God which were reflected in her relationships and activities. She is survived by her sister, Mathilda Rice; he sister-in-law, Bonnie Post; brother-in-law, Jack Ramsey; son, Charles Ramsey and daughter, Marybeth Longbine. Her son, John Ramsey, preceded her in death. She has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Remembrances may be made to Moreland Bible Church, 1648 SE Ellis, Portland, Oregon, 97214 where her memorial service will be held on October 7, 2006, at 2 p.m., interment will be at Logtown cemetery in Jacksonville, Oregon, on October 2, 2006, 2 p.m.
