Ruby Irene Hodgson
1916-2004
Ruby Irene Hodgson, an 81-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 19 at the age of 88 from age-related causes.
She was born May 4, 1916, to George and Effie Ballew in Medicine Hat, Canada.
She moved with her family to Cottage Grove in 1923 and graduated from Cottage Grove High School.
She married Elmer McCoy in 1936 and he died in 1949.
She married Alvin Hodgson in Idaho Oct. 23, 1967.
She was a well-known grocery clerk at Wolfard's Grocery in Cottage Grove from 1949 to 1967.
She loved her family.
She loved children and Halloween was a special time for her.
She enjoyed reading, bowling, gardening, sewing, working crossword puzzles and traveling with her husband in their motorhome.
She was a member of the Garden Club and Lane County Extension Club.
Survivors include her son: Mason McCoy of Yreka, Calif.; daughter: Mary Greenley of Montague, Calif.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband, sister and brother preceded her in death.
Visitation was held Thursday and a service was Friday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Interment was at Fir Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove.
Mattie E. Abbot-Samson
1911-2004
Mattie E. Abbot-Samson, 93, of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 23 from age-related causes.
She was born March 5, 1911, in Wheeler, Ark., to Samuel and Minnie Huckaby.
She married Charles Abbott, who died, and later married a dear friend of the family, Elmer Samson, who also preceded his wife in death.
She formerly lived in Oakridge before moving to Cottage Grove where she lived for 40 years.
Due to her declining health, her family moved her to be near them in Milwaukie.
She was a homemaker.
She was well-known for her quilts, having made hundreds, and she was an avid gardener.
She was a member of the Church of Christ at Sixth and Gibbs streets for 40 years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law: Peggy and Ted Jones of Milwaukie; three grandchildren and spouses: Donna Whalen and her husband, Shaun, Charles Jones and Carol Lindsay and her husband, Bob; three great-grandsons: David and Dustin Olson and Mike Whalen; stepdaughter: Hope Grazer; two step-grandchildren: Terry Grazer and Gloria Sanborn; three sisters: Lena Leeper of Mesa, Ariz., Dola Neal of Salem and Sue Lightle of Bakersfield, Calif.; and three brothers: Howard, Lon and Ronald Huckaby, all of Bakersfield, Calif.
Visitation and a service were Tuesday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
A private interment was to be held at Fir Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove.

Robert Heicken
1914-2004
Robert Heicken of Cottage Grove died Oct. 4 at the age of 90 from age-related causes.
He was born May 14, 1914, in Chicago, Ill., to Emil and Louise Heicken.
He was raised and attended school in Chicago.
He married Edith Eich on Nov. 29, 1933, in Chicago.
She preceded him in death.
He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines.
He was a printer and lithographer.
He lived in Belmont, Calif., for many years before moving to Cottage Grove to be close to family.
He enjoyed classical music, spending time with his family and an occasional bingo game.
He was a member of the Cottage Grove Faith Center.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law: Colleen and Tom Ellis, of Cottage Grove; his daughter: Cathy Salvucci, of Belmont; his sister: Delores Lynch, of Chicago; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
No service is planned.
Lee Bell George
1923-2004
Lee "Momma Lee" Bell George, a 23-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 4 at the age of 81 from complications of lung disease.
She was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Junction City, Colo., to Murray and Mary Hart.
She won the 2001 Sportswoman of the Year Diamond Award.
She used to work as a waitress in the restaurant industry.
She loved gardening, embroidery, playing pool and baking.
She also spent time as a dog sitter and volunteer.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Moose Lodge of California and Cottage Grove and the Lions Club in California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack George.
Survivors include her brothers: Godfrey Von Gunten, of Pinole, Calif., and Frankie Von Gunten, of Paradise, Calif.; her daughter: Jean Ledford, of Gresham; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A service will be held in the spring.
