Born on the family farm in rural Dunn County Wisconsin, she was the second eldest daughter of Everett and Anna Whistler. When she was quite young, the Whistlers packed up their International pickup and left for Oregon settling in Tualatin, Oregon. Her father worked long hours supporting the family through the depression years doing farm work, growing berries and working for the Portland Cement Company. Mike was in the Coast Guard attending electronics school in New London, Conn. and Faye worked at a Luncheonette for 50 cents an hour.
