Ruth Janet Hogg
HOGG, Ruth Janet — October 7, 1921 – July 13, 2006
Ruth was born in Chicago, Illinois, the fifth child of Anna Corcoran and John Wind. She met her husband, Leonard W. Hogg in 1940, and they married on June 21, 1941. During her life-time, Ruth lived in Chicago, Tujunga, California, Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and finally Reedsport, Oregon, where she resided for the past 37 years. Ruth devoted herself to her family and to the service of others. She was a 4-H leader, Cub Scout leader and a journalist, writing a column "The South Myrtle News" for the local paper, The Myrtle Creek Mail. Ruth served her church by teaching Sunday School, serving as a Deacon and church scribe, attending presbytery at a national level and serving on the board of the United Presbyterian Church in Reedsport. She served her community as a member of the Lower Umpqua Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering for the children’s "after school" program, Great Afternoons and serving as "leader" of the local bereavement group. The Soroptimist International of Reedsport chose Ruth for their Outstanding Citizen Award for "helping hands" in 1978. Ruth, and her husband, Leonard, were also members of the Oregon Kiteflyers’ Association. They also spent summers as camp hosts at several state parks along the Oregon coast. While living in Myrtle Creek, Ruth took classes to become a Certified Nurse’s Aide. Classes were taught in a neighboring town 25 miles away. She didn’t know how to drive, so Ruth needed to be creative in order to attend the classes. Contacting every nurse she knew and other friends, she arranged her transportation, never missed a class and earned her coveted C.N.A. certificate. After moving to Reedsport, Ruth began working at Lower Umpqua Hospital. She worked in most areas of the hospital, including the nursing home. When she saw a need, Ruth set about figuring out a way to fill it. She felt the elderly in the nursing home needed more activities, so she arranged singing groups, musicians and outside trips to entertain the residents. Ruth created activities that would involve using all of their senses, and in the process, created her new position as Activity Director. Even after she retired, Ruth continued to visit the residents of the nursing home, reading to them, writing letters for them, or just sitting a few minutes holding someone’s hand. Ruth was fun loving and full of the "Irish." For Halloween one year, she dressed as a hobo and went with her grandchildren to trick-or-treat her boss, the hospital administrator. Ruth wasn’t much taller than her grandchildren and he didn’t recognize her, which led to a lot of laughter when she let him in on the "secret." Her letter witting was legendary. Ruth communicated with hundreds, starting with the A’s and working her way to the Z’s, and then starting all over again. Some of her "pen pals" included a family in South Africa, childhood friends and even a woman in South Dakota whose name and address Ruth had found in a bottle floating in a river. Everyone who knew Ruth knew that she was only a phone call away. Ruth’s faith was extremely strong and when prayers were needed, she was the first person people called. She had a group of "Prayer Warriors" and would get them busy praying for those who requested it. With a smile, Ruth used to say, "Don’t worry. I have a direct line to God." No one ever doubted it. Ruth is survived by her four children, Ruthann McVicker; Christine Wilbanks; Margaret Kruse and her husband, Lynden and Scott Hogg; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren; her sister, Hazel Ziegler; brother, Edward Billmeyer and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Her beloved husband of 57 years, Leonard, passed on in 1998. She was the "glue" that bound our family together and our "rock" when life was tough. She greeted everyday with a smile and gave so much of herself to those who needed her. Ruth has gone to be with our Lord and all her family and friends who have gone before and were waiting for her with welcoming arms. She was a tiny, but mighty woman who seemed to be able to move mountains and believed that one person could make a difference. Ruth’s life of service and positive outlook touched many people. She was truly someone who made the world a better place. Ruth is loved greatly, missed terribly, and will never be forgotten. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, July 30, 1 p.m., at the United Presbyterian Church in Reedsport, 2360 Longwood Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Ruth’s name to the Extended Care Unit of Lower Umpqua Hospital, 600 Ranch Road, Reedsport, OR. 97467.
