Alfred Turbak
TURBAK, Alfred — Age 77, passed away on May 4, 2006, at his home. He was born on November 25, 1928, in Kranzburg, South Dakota, to Albert and Anna Turbak. He attended Holy Rosary School in Kranzburg and graduated from Goodwin High School in 1946. He served two years in the Army as an engineer in Korea. He retired from the South Dakota Hi-Way Patrol as a motor vehicle inspector. He married Dolores Johnson, a classmate, and they were married for 54 years. They had a daughter, Colleen from Billings, Montana; granddaughter, Amy; grandson-in-law, Ryan Painter; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Reyme, all of Rapid City, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his son, Craig; three sisters; one brother; and his parents, Albert and Anna Turbak. There will be a mass for him at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Thursday, May 11th at 12:10 noon and a memorial services at the Woodland Hills Club House on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. Memorial services in Rapid City will be at Serenity Springs on Sheridan Lake Road at 2 p.m. on May 20, 2006. Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota, the following Monday, time will be announced.
Eileen Laura Lourence
LOURENCE, Eileen Laura — Age 90, of Grants Pass, Oregon, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2006, at a local care facility. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Hull & Hull Chapel with The Reverend Father Gregory Moys officiating. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements. Eileen was born on October, 18, 1915, in Spokane, Washington. She worked as a licensed practical nurse in San Francisco, California, for 20 years. In 2000 she moved from Roseburg, Oregon, to Grants Pass. She attended St. Francis Catholic Church in San Francisco. Her hobbies included photography and singing. Survivors include, her two daughters, Gail Pickle of Grants Pass; Helen Amos of North Highlands, California; son, David Wagner of Genoa, Nevada; brother, Howard Dunton of Chicago, Illinois; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren.
Cleo Mae Rieger
RIEGER, Cleo Mae — Age 73, of Tenmile, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2006. She was born on October 18, 1932, in Lacomb, Oregon, the daughter of George and Terreatha (Bradley) Burford. She was raised on a farm in the Lebanon/Albany, Oregon area. On September 22, 1951, Cleo was united in marriage to Edwin “Ed” Rieger in Albany. They lived in Scio and Stayton, Oregon, before making their home in Tenmile, Oregon, in 1968. Cleo worked as a C.N.A. for both the old and the new Mercy Hospital in Roseburg, Oregon. She enjoyed reading and working puzzles. Cleo was a member of the All Souls Catholic Church in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and the VFW Post Auxiliary in Winston, Oregon. Cleo is survived by her husband of over 51 years, Ed of Tenmile; their children, Daniel Rieger of Myrtle Creek; Steven Rieger of Tenmile; Patricia Duke of Medford, Oregon; Cheryl Heagy of Coos Bay, Oregon; Karen Rieger of Roseburg; brother, Frank Burford of California; two sisters, Mardeen Spencer of Texas; Ellie Brown of California; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters. Friends and family are invited to a Vigil Liturgy at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 14, 2006, at Taylor’s Family Chapel. Mass Of The Resurrection will be celebrated at the All Souls Catholic Church in Myrtle Creek at 2 p.m., Monday, May 15, 2006, with Fr. Bill Ryan officiating. Interment will be at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. TAYLOR’S FAMILY CHAPEL assisted the family.
George Donald Parrish
PARRISH, George Donald — Passed away on May 9, 2006, after a very long battle with renal failure. He was born on March 30, 1928, in Long Beach, California, to Roy and Veda (Hopper) Parrish. George joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and was released from active duty on June 21, 1944. In August of 1947, he was hired as an apprentice lineman with Douglas Electric. In September of 1951, he advanced to Journeyman. Then in June of 1953, he became District Foreman in the Elkton/Scottsburg District. In May of 1956, Don Hawkinson became his partner, and there began a lifetime friendship. He and Don remained partners until their retirement. George retired on March 31, 1990. He also made an Entered Apprentice on January 14, 1956; passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft on February 25, 1956; and raised a Master Mason on March 24, 1956. George also served as Mayor of Elkton, Oregon, and on the Elkton School Board. George loved to hunt, fish, ranch, play cards, and read, but his greatest passion was sitting on his front porch of his Melrose home visiting with old friends, neighbors and family. George was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bunker; and daughter-in-law, Dasha Stanley Parrish. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; son, Mike and his family of Elkton; daughter, Terri and her family of Oakland, Oregon; son, Bunker and his family of Terrebone, Oregon; three step-children, Rose Marie; Tom; and Linda, and their families, all of Roseburg, Oregon; sister, Ellajean and her family of Fortuna, California; brother, Yale; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Arlene Federlein
FEDERLEIN, Arlene — Age 93, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, with her loving family at her side. She was born on October 22, 1912, in Albany, Oregon, the daughter of Alva and Nora (Maddox) Newman. Arlene was raised and educated in Brownsville, Oregon, before attending Business College in Portland, Oregon. She moved to San Francisco, California, and worked various jobs. While in San Francisco she met the love of her life, Melvin Federlein. On January 8, 1946, Melvin and Arlene were united in marriage in Reno, Nevada. Arlene enjoyed traveling and church and was a devout Christian. She was a loving wife and mother. Her husband, Melvin of 60 years and daughter, Christina Federlein of Snohomish, Washington, survive her. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at 1:30 p.m., at Taylor’s Family Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Dale Heinlein of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Roseburg. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to Mercy Hospice. The family would also like to extend a heart felt thanks to Mercy Hospice. Private Family Inurnment will be at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, California.
Valera Spann
SPANN, Valera — Age 94, of Tenmile, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2006. She was born on February 16, 1912, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Newton and Katherine (Staley) Croxdale. In June of 1924, she moved with her family to Winberry, Oregon, and in 1926, the family settled in Susanville, California. She met Eddie Spann and on October 23, 1927, they were united in marriage. Mr. Spann passed away in 1993 and in 1997 she moved to Tenmile to be near her son, Merlin. Valera is survived by her daughter in-law, Joyce Spann of Tenmile; grandchildren, Rocky of Roseburg,Oregon; Rodney and his wife, Freida of Coos Bay, Oregon; William of Winston, Oregon; nine great-grandchildren; and ten great- great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eddie Spann; son, Merlin Samuel Spann; grandson, SSG Merlin Roy Spann, who passed away in 1979; and three brothers, Harold, Orval and Chester Croxdale. Services will be held in Susanville, on May 19, 2006, with interment at the Janesville Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Taylor’s Family Chapel from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Herman L. Palmer
PALMER, Herman L. — Age 64, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2006. He was born on November 1, 1941, to Jack and Mary (Morrison) Palmer in Orange, California. His parents moved to Oregon in 1952. Herman lived in California until 1961, when he moved to the Kellogg/Elkton, Oregon area to be closer to his family. On April 12, 1964, Herman married Linda Joyce Mowry in Drain, Oregon. Herman worked for Martin Box Company, in Oakland; Harold Wooley Logging; and later Drain Plywood. Herman enjoyed being with his family, woodworking, cars and being outdoors fishing and hunting. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Linda Palmer; son, Gary Palmer; son, Michael Palmer, all of Roseburg; daughter, Debra Miller of Lake Havasu, Arizona; brother, Raymond Palmer of Fullerton, California; brother, Larry Kleasner of Norco, California; brother, Steven Palmer of Rice Hill, Oregon; brother, James Palmer of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; sister, Bonnie Palmer-Zosel of Drain; half-sister, Shirley Gorgita of Yoncalla, Oregon; three grandchildren; twenty-four nieces and nephews; and thirty-four great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, William and Harold Palmer; and half-brother, Bobby Goins. Private graveside services will be held on June 16, 2006, at the Elkton Cemetery. Bertha Haller Burgess Anderson
ANDERSON, Bertha — Passed away in Lubbock, Texas, on June 7, 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Caryl Ann Nelson and husband, John of Lubbock; daughter, Susan Planting and her husband, Arlen of Boise; granddaughter, Kendra Sutherland and her husband, Jeff and Jordan, Taylor and Justin of Lubbock; and granddaughter, Kathy Croom and her husband, Chris; and Grayson and Kennedy of Houston. Bertha Elizabeth Haller was born in Chicago on January 20, 1920. Her family moved to Missoula, Montana, where she graduated from Missoula County High School. She met Carl Burgess while attending the University of Montana, and they were married November 8, 1942. They had two daughters. After Carl’s death in 1959, Bert worked at the University of Montana to support her family. After her daughters were grown, Bert married Darrell (Andy) Anderson and moved to Oregon. She remained in Roseburg, Oregon after Andy’s death in 1981, until 1997 when she moved to Lubbock, Texas to be with her daughter and granddaughters. In 2005, she moved into Elmbrook Estates. Bert was active in volunteer organizations, starting in 1942 as a Red Cross nurse’s aide. She was involved with Campfire Girls, the Newcomers Club in Astoria, and RSVP, the Red Cross and the Westside Christian Church in Roseburg. She was always self-sufficient and prided herself on her independence. The family wishes to thank the 4-West UMC nursing staff, Odyssey hospice care, and Home Instead Senior Care for their care and compassion. A private memorial service will be held in Montana. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice.
Lorraine Rané Talbott
TALBOTT, Lorraine Rané — Beloved mother of David A. Talbott and Helen M. McDonough, was called home by the Lord on June 3, 2006. Remembered by her family and friends for her goodness and unwavering devotion to the Holy Divine Will, Rané was a member of St. Francis Xavier’s parish where she attended daily mass. Born in Newark New Jersey on August 8, 1924, Rané was baptized into the Roman Catholic faith on November 8, 1925, at St. Bridget’s Church. She attended the Mt. Saint Joseph Academy in St. Johnsbury Vermont where she received her diploma on June 9, 1942. She married John Allen Talbott, a Motor machinist Mate in the U.S. Navy on March 1, 1951, in St. Mary’s Rectory, Charlestown Massachusetts. They had 39 beautiful years together before Allen was called home on September 3, 1990. After his death, she moved to Sutherlin, Oregon, where she spent the last 15 years of her life gently transforming the places and people around her. She will forever be an inspiration to her son, daughter, and her seven grandchildren. Rané’s life will be celebrated with a funeral mass on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at 2 p.m., at St. Francis Xavier’s in Sutherlin. In lieu of flowers, her family asks those who knew her to perform a random act of kindness in her memory.

ALVEY, Carell Lane — Age 61, of Oakland, Oregon, passed away on June 10, 2006. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 16, 2006, at 2 p.m., at Eternal Hills in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Harold R. ‘Houckie’ Houck
HOUCK, Harold Raymond — Age 70, of Camas Valley, Oregon, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2006. He was born on February 26, 1936, in Walton, New York, the son of Reginal and Elsea Grace (Hunt) Houck. He and his family moved to Camas Valley twelve years ago. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judith, seven children: Peter, David, Joseph, Bonnie, Denise, Anita and Renita, two sisters: Regina Watson and Roberta Degroup and a brother, Steven Roy Houck. There will be a private family memorial held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.
Michael Arthur Ripley
RIPLEY, Michael Arthur — Age 33, on Winston, Oregon, passed away of Saturday, March 18, 2006. He was born on January 12, 1973, in Port Angeles, Washington, but moved to Winston as a child where he was raised and educated. Michael worked for Harvest Construction as a carpenter, but his real love was art. He enjoyed working with wood and drawings. He made friends wherever he went. Michael is survived by his parents, Robbie and Joan Parker of Winston; Harry and Heidi Ripley of Port Angeles; children, Anthony and Felisha Ripley of Cave Junction, Oregon and Elijah Ripley of Winston. He also leaves his companion, Jessica Bakke-Huff of Winston; brother, Robert Parker and his wife, Kori; step-brother, Eric Baker of Port Angeles; two sisters, Sara Parker of Winston; Vanessa Amundson of Port Angeles; two step-sisters, Brittany and Katie Baker, both of Port Angeles; grandmothers, Evelyn Stringer of Ferndale, Washington and Margaret Parker of Winston; nieces and nephews, Mikaela; EmmaLee and Savannah Crabtree; Kiara Amundson; Dallas Jones; Chasadi and Thor Parker; and Jazzmyn Denney, who is due to be born soon. We would like to say a special thank you to Gerry, Randy and Steve Parker, the uncles that worked so hard to save his life. Michael was preceded in death by three grandfathers, Clarence Ripley; Clarence Parker; Arthur Jackson; and grandmother, Lucille Young. William O. ‘Willie’ McClendon
McCLENDON, William O. “Willie” — Age 94, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away on March 20, 2006. He was born on October 25, 1911, in Boto, Arkansas, to Lee and Jane McClendon. Willie married Reba Imogene ‘Jean’ Folsom. They celebrated their 70th anniversary on October 19, 2005. Willie was an outdoor person and did many different things including working in a sawmill. He is survived by his wife, Jean of Myrtle Creek; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Tracy and Ruthann McClendon of Myrtle Creek; and Jim and Edith McClendon of Riddle, Oregon; five grandsons, Bill; Bob; and Richard all of Winston, Oregon; Shawn and Russell of Roseburg; one granddaughter, Thea of Myrtle Creek; and several great-grandsons and great-grand daughters; two sisters, Velma of Murfreesboro, Arkansas; and Johnnie of Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by one son, J.W., his father and mother, two sisters, and two brothers. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, March 25, 2006, at Mountain View Memorial Chapel in Myrtle Creek. Visitation will be held on Friday from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. Private burial will be at the Riddle Cemetery.
Edna (McIntosh) Brewer
BREWER, Edna (McIntosh) — Age 91, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2006, at her daughter’s home. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Hull and Hull Funeral Directors. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m., at Hull and Hull Chapel with Pastor Ron Marsh officiating. Private interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park. HULL AND HULL FUNERAL DIRECTORS of Grants Pass, Oregon, are in charge of arrangements. Remembrances may be made to Mercy Hospice, 2400 Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, Oregon, 97470. She was born on March 17, 1915, in Golden, Oregon. She attended grade school and junior high school in Sunny Valley and Wolf Creek, Oregon. In 1933, Edna graduated from Canyonville High School. When Edna was 18, she married Boyd Caraway. They had two daughters. Edna worked in the Shady Nook Store, restaurant, service station, and campground on the 40 acres in Sunny Valley that her father had purchased. She also worked as a dispatcher for Grants Pass Taxi, as a scaler in the ship yards, and in the Christie Hop yards. In February 1948, Edna married Daniel Joseph Brewer. They were married for fifty years until his death on April 17, 1998. Over a 46 year period, Edna lived in Josephine County. Twelve years ago, she moved from LaPine to Roseburg. She was a published author and poet, an accomplished seamstress, and loved to garden. She also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a captain on a commercial fishing boat for seven years. Survivors include her six daughters, Jackie Balendar of Grants Pass; Billie Garcia of Sunny Valley; Jody and her husband, Mike Lorentzen of Roseburg; Sandra Antich of Redding, California; Darlene Jones of Georgia; and Patty Conant of Reno, Nevada; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Randy Wayne Larson
LARSON, Randy Wayne — Age 50, of Roseburg, Oregon, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 18, 2006. He was born on September 24, 1955, in Roseburg to Don and Flora Larson. Randy lived in Sutherlin, Oregon, as he was growing up and he attended Sutherlin High School. He worked for Roseburg Forest Products for twenty years. Randy attended UCC where he trained to become a phlebotomist and a pharmacy technician. He worked for Douglas Community Hospital and Mercy Hospital. In 2000, Randy became a co-owner of Lady Bug Janitorial. He was a loving gentle person who was devoted to his family. Randy enjoyed the time he spent with his sons; visiting with his parents and planning his future life with his fiance. Randy was a jack of all trades. He had a talent for drawing and woodworking and made many beautiful things which he gave away. Randy was a member of the Sutherlin Christian Assembly for thirty years and a beloved friend of the Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include parents, Don and Flora Larson of Sutherlin, Oregon; sons, Toby Larson of Albany, Oregon; and Travis Larson of Eugene, Oregon; sisters, Patty Welch of Albany, Oregon; and Brenda Krueger of Roseburg; three nieces; three nephews; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; aunts and uncles; and fiance, Cindy Workman of Roseburg. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 24, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., at Chapel of the Firs. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Tom Dever officiating. Burial will be within the grounds of Valley View Cemetery. CHAPEL OF THE FIRS is assisting the family.
Mark League
LEAGUE, Mark — Passed away March 17, 2006, at home in Sutherlin, Oregon. He was born on March 14, 1926, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Burbank, California. Mark joined the Coast Guard in 1943 and served aboard the Landing Ship Tank LST#70 as a Motor Machinist’s Mate, Second Class. His major campaigns were in Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Spain. His battle station was a 20mm antiaircraft gun. He received unit citations and all the stars from different divisions and an honorable discharge. He was the recipient of the ship’s flag in 1946 when it was decommissioned, as he was the senior member and longest attendant of the ship. He worked at General Motors in Van Nuys, California for 33 years, and retired as Director of Quality Control. In 1975, Mark married Mary Anne. They lived in Southern California, until 1983, when they moved to their cattle ranch east of Sutherlin. He loved to ride his horses, his Harley, restore classic autos and hot rods, and have a family-cruise, all in vintage cars to the Dairy Queen in Sutherlin. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Amy League; brother, Robert League; sister, Florence Crawford; and first wife, Virginia. He leaves his wife, Mary Anne; son, Steven; daughter, Susan Hickman and her husband, John of Sutherlin; son, Thomas of Roseburg; step-son, Dennis Atkinson and his wife, Marian of Southern California; and many grandchildren and great- grandchildren. There are no services planned, however a private family gathering is planned in the summer. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mark’s name to the Community Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 2038, Roseburg, Oregon, 97470. Donald ‘Don’ Preston McPherson
MCPHERSON, Donald “Don” Preston —Our honored father, brother, pa-pa, and friend went to his final resting place on March 16, 2006. Donald ‘Don’ Preston McPherson was born on September 26, 1928, in Chewelah, Washington, to Joseph and Eva McPherson. When Don was 14 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as Private First Class in the Korean War and WW II, earning several medals, including the Bronze Star. After being honorably discharged in 1956, Don chose to pursue adventure in life throughout the U.S. He married Phyllis in April of 1973 and settled down to have daughters Eva and Erin. Don had an incomparable love and respect for nature and all that it had to offer. This love led him to work for the BLM and Forest Service even when he was in his 50’s. Nothing held him back from his life in the forest where he spent his days hiking, camping, or just enjoying the peace. This love also included his admiration for gems and minerals. His prospecting produced many “rocks” that, although had no monetary value, held great wealth and beauty to Don. When Don wasn’t prospecting, hiking, or photographing the forest, he enjoyed resting in his truck in the local parks of Canyonville, Oregon, where he called home. You could also find him eating in his favorite restaurants where he was known for his stories and flowers. Other hobbies included drawing, drafting, building inventions, billiards, playing the guitar, talking with many of his acquaintances and friends, especially Pug and playing with his granddaughters, Trinity and Victoria. Don is survived by daughter, Erin and her husband, Dave Davis; granddaughters, Trinity and Victoria; daughter, Eva and her husband, Brian Corbett; grandson, Ben; granddaughter, Abigail; brother, Dexter McPherson and family; sister, Mary Jean Malfait and family; sister, De Ette Ford and family; many nieces, nephews and close friends, especially Pug, Uncle Ed, Alan, Shorty and all others. Burial services will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at 2:30 p.m., at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. A potluck memorial will be held in Stanton Park on Sunday, March, 26, 2006, at 2 p.m.. All are invited to come, please bring a side dish to share and a drink.
Gladys E. Sidener
SIDENER, Gladys E. — Age 95, of Drain, Oregon, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2006. She was born on July 18, 1910, in Galena, Missouri to parents Neely and Bertha (Anderson) Delk. Gladys married Reuben Harris in 1930 in Coquille, Oregon. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1976. She later married Ray Sidener in Carson City, Nevada in 1985. He preceded her in death in 1987. Gladys was a resident of Drain since 1940. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, canning and spending time with her family. Gladys is survived by her son, James W. Harris of Drain; son, Patrick Harris of Sun City West, Arizona; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands, Reuben Harris and Ray Sidener; and grandson, Jeffrey Harris on February 26, 1986. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2006, at 11:30 a.m., at Drain Church of Christ, in Drain. Interment will be at Drain-Yoncalla Masonic Cemetery, Yoncalla, Oregon.
