Edwin Meek
MEEK, Edwin — Age 86, of Myrtle Point, Oregon passed away on April 15, 2006 in Eugene, Oregon. Born on February 13, 1920 in Rye, Arkansas to Albert and Vira (McMahon) Meek. He was drafted into the US Army and served his country during WWII. After his discharge he moved to California. He was married to Ruth Ross in 1950. Edwin worked for Davy Tree Company for many years. He was transferred to LaGrande, Oregon and continued to work for Davy for 30 years. In 1984 he and Ruth moved to Canyonville where he lived until 2002. In 2000 his wife died and shortly thereafter, he purchased a 5th wheel and began his travels. He reacquainted with Oletha “Lee” Johnston and they were married in September of 2002. While on their travels, they discovered Myrtle Point and purchased a home here in 2004. He enjoyed making stained glass windows, wood working, making hook rugs, and gardening, especially his roses. Survivors include his wife, Oletha Meek of Myrtle Point, Oregon; step-children, Harold Smith of Santa Cruz, California; Mary Granacha of Martinez, California; Michael Johnston of Chehalis, Washington; Peggy Oberg of Big Lake, Alaska; Ann Johnston of Bakersfield, California; sister, Joan Rufner of Little Rock, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Meek in 2000; brothers, Verner and Ben Meek; sister, Maxi Lee Overton. Memorial Service will be held on April 21, 2006 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Canyonville. Pastor E. Vance Culpepper will be officiating. Robert ‘Bob’ Curtis Morrison
MORRISON, Robert “Bob” Curtis — Went home to be with the Lord on April 7, 2006, truly the day Bob became eternally, “Better than the day he was worse”. Bob was born to Basil and Hannah Morrison on September 1, 1917, in Transfer, Pennsylvania, on property still farmed by his family. Although he resided in Milwaukie, Oregon, for the last six months, he had lived in Roseburg, Oregon, since his retirement in 1985. During WWII, he was an Electrician at Westinghouse in Sharon, Pennsylvania. After the war, Bob and his wife, Ida “Blondie” dedicated the rest of their careers to Christian service focused on children. They were the first employees of Camp Judson on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania; followed by the American Baptist Assembly Grounds in Green Lake, Wisconsin; the Children’s Baptist Home in Los Angeles, California; Camp Harlow in Eugene, Oregon; and Camp Tadmor near Lebanon, Oregon. Bob was married to Ida Roberts who preceded him to Heaven in 1994 after 54 years of marriage. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Janet and Ralph Fray and Peggy and Paul Osborn; four grandchildren, Scott Fray and his wife, Johanna; Debbie Fray Parrett and her husband, Derek; Susan Osborn Carlson and her husband, Nathan; Karen Osborn; and six great-grandchildren. Bob was the oldest of nine children of whom three have preceded him to Heaven, Thomas, Cynthia Deevers and Lester. He is survived by his brothers, Norman and James; and sisters, Janet Espey, Verlene Barr and LaWanda Johnston. Bob will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and always having a ready joke and loving smile. Bob’s body has been donated to Oregon Health and Sciences University for the advancement of medical science and the benefit of humanity. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on May 21, 2006, at 3:30 p.m. at the First Conservative Baptist Church in Roseburg. Arrangements were entrusted to Lincoln Memorial Home in Portland, Oregon.
Edward B. Neal
NEAL, Edward B. — Age 81, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2006, in a local nursing home. He was born on April 24, 1924, in Jellico, Tennessee, to William and Florence Neal. On December 17, 1948, in Pine Knott, Kentucky, he married Shirley H. Watters. Mr. Neal worked in the Oakridge, Tennessee Atomic Plant for the duration of WWII. He received from the Secretary of War, Henry Stinson, an atomic pin and a letter of commendation for his work with the Corps of Engineers. Only 40 pins were awarded for outstanding service. Mr. Neal worked in road construction most of his life and loved working with the large equipment and he could operate all of them. He liked to farm and grow all kinds of things. Mr. Neal loved his dog, “Charlie” who was his constant companion for 17 years. He was loved by all and will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Shirley Neal; nephew, Joel King and his wife, Donda; nieces, Florence Peterson and her husband, Ronald and Schonda Cooksey; great-nieces and nephews, Lacy; Ta’Neal; Stephanie; Ronnie; Shannon; Jayden; Ashely; Stephanie; Mellisa; Matt and Seth; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Neal was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinely Neal and Florence Litton Neal; brother, Herbert F. Neal; sisters, Wilma Louise Neal and Bobbi Jean Neal King; nephew, Bruce Neal; and niece, Donna Ledford. Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 21, 2006, at 2 p.m., within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Those who wish may pay their respects on Friday, April 21, 2006, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at WILSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES who is in charge of the arrangements.
Robert ‘Bob’ Lee Taylor
TAYLOR, Robert “Bob” Lee — Of Sweet Home, Oregon, passed away on April 4, 2006, of heart related problems at the age of 68. He was born on July 19, 1937, in The Dalles, Oregon, to Victor and Caroline Leis Taylor. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. Bob spent his life working in the woods and in construction as an equipment operator. He loved to spend any spare time in the outdoors digging clams, crabbing, fishing and bow hunting. Since we all can remember Bob always had a Chihuahua named “Killer” at his side. He is survived by his long time partner, Deloris Rucker; son, David; daughter, Bobbi Galati; brothers, John Taylor and Ted Urban; sisters, Annette Clark and Roberta Starr; and five grandchildren. Arrangements are by McHenry Funeral Home in Corvallis, Oregon. No service has been planned at this time.
Lucky Skates
SKATES, Lucky — Age 87, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on February 22, 2006. She was born on April 8, 1918, in Concord, Oklahoma. Lucky was united in marriage to Charles D. Skates in Texas in 1938. She is survived by daughter, Kathy Bruno and her husband, Mark; grandchild, Christina; two great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Ayers; many nephews, nieces and friends, beloved by all. A graveside service will be held on April 21, 2006, at 1 p.m., at the Roseburg National Cemetery.
Michael Daniel Egan
EGAN, Michael Daniel — Age 39, of Riddle, Oregon, passed away on December 23, 2005. Michael entered this life on July 26, 1966, in Corona, California, to Robert K. and Corrine (Spencer) Nickerson. In 1972, his mother met and married Michael J. Egan, who quickly and lovingly adopted he and his brother, Todd. Michael spent his younger years in Riverside and Burney, California. The family moved to Riddle in 1981. He attended Milo Academy for three years, and graduated from Riddle High School in 1985. After high school, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Germany and traveled extensively through Europe. Upon his return, he was stationed in New York. Because of his attention to military detail he was chosen for Honor Guard Duty. When he entered civilian life he went to work for American Airlines. He had a passion for flying and loved his work. Michael received many letters of appreciation from passengers from all walks of life. There were no stranger in Michaels life. His travels took him to many parts of the world. Michael is survived by his parents, Mike and Corrine Egan of Riddle; brother, Todd Egan of Newport, Oregon; niece, Elyshia C. Egan of New York; nephews, Tyler Egan of California; Cameron Egan of Oregon; uncles, Dan Spencer and his wife, Dorothy of Houston, Missouri; Jim and his wife, Joy of Stanton, California; aunts, Barbara Nickerson Estrada of Winter Haven, Florida; Lois Clair and her husband, Bob of Grants Pass, Oregon; great-aunt, Stella Cunningham of Bloomington, Illinois; and many friends and cousins. One very special cousin, Dorothy Vizard of San Diego, California, and wonderful and loving life-long friend, Linda Evans of Riverside, California. Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hirschel and Minnie Spencer; Paul and Jessie Egan; and Phillip Nickerson. He will be greatly missed and always have a special and loving place in our hearts. Now he sleeps in Jesus and awaits our reunion. As we have this assurance and blessed hope in the soon return of our Lord. Michael's service was officiated by long-time friend, Jim Knight of the Canyonville Seventh-day Adventist Church and was laid to rest at the Riddle Cemetery on December 26, 2005.
Alvin Francis Neal
NEAL, Alvin Francis — Age 61, passed away on December 21, 2005. He was born on November, 21, 1944 in Huntsville, Arkansas, to Jake Lloyd and Avis Esther (Freiley) Neal. He married Carol Ann Markham of Roseburg, Oregon in 1962. Alvin loved cars, motorcycles and tinkering on his mustang. He volunteered for the Douglas County No. 2 Fire Department and later became a paid fireman. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and after serving 13 months in Vietnam, he was based in Camp Pendleton, California. During Alvin’s service time, he received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. After being discharged, Alvin was employed with the Douglas County Road Department until 1977, then he bought his own semi and became self-employed (AL Neal Trucking). Alvin enjoyed collecting and target shooting various guns. He frequented the Roseburg Rod-n-Gun Club. He loved photography and fishing. Previously, Alvin and his son, Brent A Neal built a boat together and were in the process of building a second one with Brent’s sons. Alvin enjoyed being a grandpa and his face would light up when he spoke of them. His father, Jake L. Neal, preceded him in death. He is survived by his mother, Avis E. Neal of Roseburg; his son, Brent A. Neal and his wife Lynnae of Roseburg; son, Robert A. Neal of Yeagertown, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Logan, serving in the U.S. Navy, of Syracuse, New York; Seth; Shelby; and Brock, all of Roseburg; Courtney and Shaunna of Yeagertown, Pennsylvania; brother, Norman B. Neal and his wife, Mayrene of Roseburg; brother, Edward L. Neal and his wife, Vicky of Woodland, California; uncle, Harold Freiley of Brea, California; former wife, Carol Ann Heard of Roseburg; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at the Roseburg National Cemetery with full Military Honor Guard. Robert Haughton
Haughton, Robert — Age 81, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2005. He was born on January 14, 1924, in Myrtle Point, Oregon, the son of George and Bernice (Slater) Haughton. Robert was raised and educated in Myrtle Point until the 8th grade, when he started working on the family farm. When Robert turned 18 he joined the U.S. Army during World War II. After his time in the service, Robert returned home to Myrtle Point and drove log truck for several years. Robert met Pauline Floyd and they were united in marriage on January 5, 1947, in Myrtle Point. Robert and Pauline moved to Roseburg where he starting driving log truck for Wells Logging. He retired after 32 years with the company. Robert came out of retirement and began driving dump truck for Dan Brady Excavation until the age of 80. Robert enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, clam digging, camping and growing his vegetable garden, but most of all he enjoyed his annual hunting trips to Eastern Oregon. He is survived by two children, Kay Conley of Roseburg; Francis “Buster” Conley and his wife, Susan of Myrtle Point; one brother, Charles Haughton of Medford, Oregon; three sisters, Dorothy Parrish of Myrtle Point; Ruth Martin and her husband, Clayton of Eagle Point, Oregon; Ellen Hillyer of Sutherlin, Oregon; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; son, Mitch; and two brothers, Pete and Mark. There will be a celebration of life held on Saturday, December 31, 2005, at 2 p.m., at the Hucrest Community Church of God. Officiating will be Pastor Lorin Myers. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.
Dora Alice (Wolford) Frisby
FRISBY (Wolford) Dora Alice — Age 71, a resident of College Place, Washington, passed away on April 22, 2006, in Walla Walla, Washington. Family and friends may pay their respects at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., on Tuesday and Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. until 8 p.m., on Thursday. The graveside service will be at 10 a.m., on Friday, April 28, 2006, at Mount Hope Cemetery, in College Place, Washington. The memorial service will be at 3 p.m., on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Walla Walla City Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2133 Howard Street, in Walla Walla. Pastors Ed Gienger and Mark Etchell will officiate. Mrs. Frisby was born on July 18, 1934, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Alex and Pearl Cox Wolford. She attended school in Drain and Oakland, Oregon. She lived in the Oakland area for many years before moving to College Place where she met and married Norman Frisby, the love of her life, in 2001. The hobbies she enjoyed throughout her life were oil painting, rock hounding, river rafting and steelhead fishing on the Umpqua River. She worked for several years as an in-home caregiver in the area. She was a devoted member of the Walla Walla City Church. Survivors include her husband at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Al Davin and Debbie and Robert Patterson, all of Oakland; son, Duane Brownson of Cottage Grove, Oregon; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Vic Hawley of Kenmore, Washington; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and a stepson.
E. Michael Smith
SMITH, E. Michael — Age 68, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away April 22, 2006, from Leukemia at home with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 12, 1937, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to Mozelle and Erdis Smith. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy mostly in Japan from 1955 until 1959. He returned to Klamath Falls and worked for Weyerhaeuser until he figured that the cold weather was not for him. He left for California and ended up at Vandenberg working the space program as a machinist. He married Patricia Lee Calvin in 1965 and resided in Santa Maria, California. They had two sons. Later they moved to Orange County, California. Michael had joined the International Association of Machinist and was voted in as their President of District Lodge No. 720 in Torrance, California. He served eight years as their president and retired in 1993. They then moved to Roseburg. His wife, Patricia, died of cancer in 1995. Michael attended a bereavement group and later met Peggy Abodeely there. After a beautiful courtship they were married on August 29, 1999. The two of them had a wonderful chance at love the second time around and they lived life to the fullest. Which included bowling, golfing, traveling, dancing, walking on the beach, going on picnics and making their own wine (the best in the west). In their travels they would plan on going to as many cooking schools as possible, New Orleans; Las Vegas; Astoria; and they were to go to Paula Deen’s school in Savannah, Georgia, in September. Michael was the most loving husband, father, step-father, grandfather, brother, and friend that God put on this Earth. He had a lot of one-liners to tell and always welcomed a good joke. He loved to tease and you could tell by the twinkle in his eyes. He gave the very best of hugs in the world, and many can attest to that. Respectful of others, honest and caring; there just aren’t enough adjectives to describe “My Michael”. He is preceded in death by his late wife, Patricia and his father, Erdis. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Peggy ‘Margaret’; sons and their families, Wesley and Mary and grandchildren, Ryan and Megan; Perry and Kim and grandchildren, Carrisa, Kamren, Tatiana and great-grandchild, Michael; mother, Mozelle and step-dad, Ray South; brothers, James, Dawson and Steven; step-children, Rick and Denise Abodeely; cousin and husband, Peggy Jean and Earl Gust; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and close to his heart, his many dear friends. Michael said that he was ready for Jesus to take his hand and help him on his journey. Graveside services will be at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2006, at Valley View Cemetery. Louis Anthony ‘Tony’ Wofford II
WOFFORD II, Louis Anthony “Tony” — Age 42, a resident of Sweet Home, Oregon, passed away on April 19, 2006, from injuries he received in a log truck accident which occurred outside of Cherry Grove. A celebration of Tony’s life was held on Sunday, April 23, 2006, at 3 p.m., in Sweet Home. He was born on February 28, 1964, in Sacaton, Arizona, the son of Luis Antonio Wofford and Billie J. (Hudspeth) Wofford. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Oregon, settling in the Roseburg community, where he was raised and received his education. Tony joined the Oregon Army National Guard on April 27, 1984. He served with Company l 186th Infantry in Roseburg for six years until receiving his Honorable Discharge on March 11, 1990. Tony was united in marriage to J. DiAnn Green on September 20, 1996, in Sonora, California. Tony and DiAnn celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary this past September. Tony worked as a log truck driver for Valley View Logging and Cutting, Inc. in Sweet Home. He was a Lakota of the Oglala tribe whose family was from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was the keeper of his grandfather, Oliver ‘J.B.’ Hudspeth’s, drum. Among his interests, Tony enjoyed fishing, camping and loved to build things. He was a jokester and loved to make people laugh. Tony liked to entertain people by singing and doing impersonations. He had a special place in his heart for his hounddog, ‘Gleska’ (which means spotted). He loved his family and always enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Tony was preceded in death by his brother, Brian A. Wofford in 1996. He is survived by his wife, J. DiAnn Wofford, of the family home in Sweet Home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita and Dan Cumbra of Crescent City, California and Connie and Brian Roy of Cloquet, Minnesota; a son, Travis Preston of Keizer, Oregon; his mother and step-father, Billie J. and James L. ‘Jim’ Mecham of Roseburg; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert D. and Anya Wofford of Lynnwood, Washington; Mike and Freenie Mecham of Eugene, Oregon; Joe and Elizabeth Wofford of Roseburg; Jason and Anjie Mecham of Roseburg; Mark Brady of Jackson, Missouri; a sister and brother-in-law, Shauna and Mike Baldwin of Miramachi, New Brunswick, Canada; nine grandchildren, Cassandra, Christiana, Emily, and Isabella Roy; Kyle, Kara, and Kolton Cumbra; Brent Preston; Lexie Price; and many nieces and nephews. Bonnie J. Salo
SALO, Bonnie J. — Age 67, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on April 17, 2006. She was born on July 19, 1938, in Nampa, Idaho, to Harry and Agnes Harbit. She was united in marriage to Al Salo in Nampa on August 28, 1965. Bonnie was a CNA II and retired in 1985. She is survived by her mother, Agnes Harbit of Sutherlin; sister, Rose Wright of LaPine, Oregon; sister, Dorothy Trussel; daughter, Brenda Norris of Roseburg, Oregon; daughter, Becky Lee of Sutherlin; daughter, Barbara Bedard of Eugene, Oregon; son, Brian Salo of Sutherlin; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Harry Harbit and her husband, Al Salo. A graveside service will be held on April 29, 2006, at 1 p.m., at Fair Oaks Cemetery.
Jacqueline Woods
Woods, Jacqueline — Age 70, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2006 at her home with her loving husband, Leonard at her side. She was born February 28, 1936 in Wagoner, North Carolina, daughter of El and Nora (Henson) Richardson. Jacqueline grew up in North Carolina, however her mother passed away when she was young. She met Leonard Woods, a young army soldier in Maryland, and they were united in marriage on December 27, 1952 in Churchville, Maryland. They were like two doves on a limb together, forever. They lived in the Long Beach, California area where they worked as Graduate Gemologists. They retired to Oregon and settled in the Winston, Oregon area in 1994. She enjoyed all the mediums of art and loved going to the art mill. She gave away much of her work to friends. She was a loving person who was loved by her friends and family. “Her laughter was catching.” She is survived by her husband, Leonard, brother-in-law, Don Dishmon of North Carolina, sister, Marlene Little and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Aileen Dishmon and half-brother, Woodrow Bare. Services will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Taylor’s Family Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Stan Beerman. Family and friends may come pay their final respects on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM at Taylor’s. Private interment will be at the Roseburg VA National Cemetery.
James Clyde Peterson
PETERSON, James Clyde — Age 78, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on May 2, 2006. James was born on February 18, 1928, in the town of Borger, Texas, to parents, Louis and Maekazar “Mae” Peterson. In his early teen years, James and his brothers hopped a train, with only a few hundred dollars in their pockets, and came to Myrtle Creek, Oregon. James met Julia Mae Faulkner soon after arriving in Oregon. It was love at first sight. They were married on October 20, 1948, at her parents home in Myrtle Creek. They were married for 58 wonderful years. Family and home were everything to James and Julia. He loved spending time with his family, especially the children. James had a deep love for his pets and used to love going on bike rides. He retired from Roseburg Forest Products after many, many years. James was preceded in death by his wife, Julia; mother, Mae; father, Louis; brother, G.W.; infant son, Larry; and granddaughter, Debbie in 1990. James will be greatly missed by his extended family and friends. Edward John Duffy Jr.
Duffy, Edward John Jr. — Was born in Ventura, California, to Edward and Rosalie Duffy on February 9, 1955. Ed was the older of two sons. The family moved to Roseburg, Oregon, on July 15, 1963. Ed attended Fir Grove and Rose elementary schools and Fremont Jr. High in Roseburg. The family moved to Glide, Oregon, the summer of 1970, where Ed attended and graduated from Glide high school. Upon graduation in 1974, Ed enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served for two years. In 1976, he enlisted in active service in the Army. During his service in the Army, he was stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Hood, Texas and Fort Bliss, Texas. He did two tours in Germany and he served in Desert Storm, from which he received the Bronze Star Medal in 1991. Ed retired from the Army in January of 1995. After retirement, he went into Security Services in Texas and Oregon, most recently at Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ron, Oregon. Ed passed away April 26, 2006. He is survived by his daughter, Kristen; grandson, Xander; son, Andrew; mother, Rosalie Hernandez Duffy; wife, Nita; and brother, William George Duffy. His father, Edward John Duffy Sr., preceded him in death. Ed enjoyed reading, the outdoors, camping, hunting, fishing and smoking fine cigars.
John R. Walters
WALTERS, John R. — Age 76, resident of Canyonville, Oregon, passed away at home Friday noon, May 5, 2006 while mowing his lawn in preparation for family coming to help celebrate his birthday. He was born on May 5, 1930 at Eau Gallie, Florida to Paul and Dorthea Walters. The family left there when he was young and went to California. He grew up and went to school and lived in various places in California. He was married on January 14, 1975 to Leota Martin and they came to Oregon in 1968 Iiving in various places before settling in Canyonville in 1991. John was in Law Enforcement for 17 years in California and also in Southern Oregon in Jackson County. John was a motorcycle officer who did a lot of escort service, including President Kennedy, President Eisenhower, the Chancellor of West Germany, and the Governor of California. He was a US Navy veteran entering in 1948 during the Korean War. John as a sailor was attached to the Seventh Fleet at Korea. Surviving are his wife, Leota of Canyonville, four sons, Randy and his wife, Traci Martin of Roseburg, John and his wife, Jill Walters of Tiller, Oregon, Tom Walters of Wi Iiams, Arizona, Mark Martin of Phoenix, Arizona, two daughters, Kathi Sanford of Ritzville, Washington, Linda and her husband, Matt Miller of Apple Valley, California, a brother, Roy and his wife, Johnnie Walters of Tucson, Arizona, a sister, Rebecca and her husband, Carl Kerpa of Palmdale, CA, 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at Mountain View Memorial Chapel at Myrtle Creek, Oregon, with Pastor Mark Martin officiating. Private urn disposition at a later date.
Harold Lee Long
Long, Harold Lee — Age 66, formerly of Roseburg, Oregon, slipped peacefully away to be with Jesus, in his home in Carlin, Nevada, on Tuesday, May 2, 2005, with his family at his side. Harold was born on October 25, 1939, in San Bernardino, California, the sixth child of Cecil A. and Calla L. (Mahoney) Long. He attended grade and middle school in San Bernardino before moving with his family to Roseburg in 1954. In 1958, Harold graduated from Roseburg High School. While in school he enjoyed wood working, art classes and playing baseball. Harold had the potential to become a major league baseball player before injuring his back in the late 1950's. After graduation, Mr. Long followed in the footsteps of his father and older brothers, all of whom were construction workers. On August 5, 1960, in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, Harold married Cassandra Spain with whom he had four children, Theresa Marie and her husband, Danny Hopkins of Boise, Idaho; Barbara Gene and her husband, William Schleckser of O'Fallin, Illinois; Harold Odell Matthew Long of Eureka, Nevada; and Roy Edward and his wife, Tamra Long of Round Mountain, Nevada. Mr. Long continued in the construction trade before settling in Carlin, where he worked as a mechanic for Berrick Mining Corporation for seventeen years before his retirement in 2005. At the time of his retirement, he was seventh in seniority in Berrick's worldwide operation. On July 4, 1996, Harold wed Mary Frost in Elko, Nevada. Mary gave him four step-children, MaryAnn and her husband, Hauley Slayton of Sparks, Nevada; Joyce Frost of Carlin; Jeannie and her husband, Sherman Besard; Danial Frost, both of Fernley, Nevada. Harold continued to enjoy working with wood and took up the sport of golf which he enjoyed playing with his wife, Mary. He would play a round of golf with anyone, at any time, in nearly any kind of weather. He also enjoyed his annual camping trips with his brothers and sisters, and huge family gatherings, the larger, the better. Mr. Long was also very civic minded. Though he did not belong to any particular organization, he gave a lending hand to all and spent many hours helping with anything that had to be done in the small town of Carlin. Harold will always be remembered for his easy loping stride, his eclectic sense of humor and ready smile, and his very deep voice. Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Mary; his four children and four step-children and six grandchildren, Kenneth and Michael Schleckser; Danny Jr. and Lisa Hopkins; Nikki and Rickey Long; fifteen step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. Harold is also survived by sisters, Dorothy and her husband, Stan Turpen of Grants Pass, Oregon; Beverly LeClair of Kingman, Arizona: Claretta and her husband, Tom Hillabold of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; Barbara and her husband, Jerry Rooney; brothers, Arthur and his wife, Beverly Long; Gary and his wife, Shirley Long; very special aunt, Cleta Callahan, all of Roseburg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, too numerous to name, all of whom loved him very much. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, James D. Long; brother-in-law Edmund LeClair; and sister-in-law, Ima Gene Long. We can let you go now Harold, knowing that you are resting in the arms of your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ where there is no longer any pain or suffering. We will be together again one day, Cowboy. Memorial services were held for Mr. Long in Elko on Friday, May 5, 2006. Those who wish may attend graveside services on Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Roseburg Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. Pastor Anthony Marshall of the Dillard Church of God will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Taylor's Family Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
